This week on Movie Date Podcast, hosts David Carson and Stacy Nye talk about Ingrid Goes West, Hulu's Shrill, and review 2019's JOKER, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a socially inept clown for hire that has been mistreated by the very people that he was put on earth to make laugh and plots revenge.
This week, Point of Inquiry welcomes comedian, monologist, and atheist, Julia Sweeney. Many may know Sweeney from her time on Saturday Night Live, her appearances on NPR's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, and from her current roles on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Hulu's Shrill. Jim Underdown sat down with Sweeney at CFI West to discuss her time working on SNL, dealing with her catholic faith after the passing of her brother to cancer, how Carl Sagan, Michael Shermer, and CFI helped her become an atheist, her experiences navigating Hollywood as a non-believer, and her conflicting opinions surrounding the Me Too movement after her good friend, Al Franken was accused of misconduct. If you've never seen it before, Sweeney's, "Letting Go of God" talk is highly recommended for those who became atheists after living with a religious point of view. You can find Sweeney on twitter: @JIsbackintown.
Based on Lindy West's memoir of the same name, Hulu's Shrill tells the story of Annie (played by Aidy Bryant) as she tries to change her life, but not her body. This week on the podcast, Mom and I get real talking about Hulu's Shrill. We have a few qualms with the show, but overall we are in to it. Spoilers abound so don't be lazy and take the 3 hours needed to watch the first season and then enjoy our banter. Or just skip the show and enjoy our banter anyway. Whatever.
The plot of 1939's Lady of the Tropics strangely mirrored the life of it's star Hedy Lamarr. In the film Lamarr is a woman of mixed race living in pre-war Saigon trying to flee the advances of an oily, corrupt rubber tycoon. She is half French and yearns to escape to France in search of her father. In real life, the Czech born Lamarr fled her home country for Paris after marrying a domineering Austrian arms merchant with ties to Mussolini and Hitler! From Paris she made her way to London where she was discovered by Louis B. Mayer and placed under contract with MGM. Dan and Vicky discuss the film and the questionable way it depicts the life of a woman of mixed race. Also on hand is some recently seen including King Lear on Broadway, Hulu's Shrill, HBO's The Case Against Adnan Syed, Halloween 2018, Gasper Noe's Climax, and Greta. Get the latest on Funikijam and hear all about Dan's new foray into Shakespeare off-Broadway. Check out Hot Date 84: Lady of the Tropics and leave us some feedback. The new Hulu series Shrill follows Annie, a young writer. She's trying to get her career moving, figure out what's up with her sort-of boyfriend, and learn to feel good about her body. Annie is played by Saturday Night Live's Aidy Bryant, who developed Shrill with TV writer Ali Rushfield and with Lindy West. West wrote the 2016 book of the same name that forms the backbone of the show.
Kelly and Stephanie talk about episode one of Hulu's Shrill and discuss the pressure on women to "be nice", the pickles you can get in without clear boundaries and why it's important to have shows like this on TV.
Was Lamar just a rebound? What’s up with the controversy of the pool party? Is Annie being selfish, and do people hunt their trolls IRL? This week, we bid farewell to Catastrophe, which is such an absolute gem of a show, one that has always been brutally, painfully honest but hysterically funny about the highs and low lows of marriage and parenthood. Then we say hello to a newcomer, Hulu's Shrill. We wish the series could have had more time to unfold, but it's a delight for many reasons, Aidy Bryant's performance and the unapologetic look at what it's like to be a fat woman just trying to live her best life, chief among them. Shows Discussed: Catastrophe, Shrill, Queer Eye, Last Week Tonight, The Act
