In this episode, we crack open a practical primer on caddis flies—what they are, how to spot them, and simple ways to fish each stage. We recorded this one from our “satellite offices” in Florissant, Colorado, and it's all about translating river observations into flies that work right now on Southeastern waters.Highlights of the EpisodeCaddis 101, quick and clear: life stages from egg → larva → pupa → adult—and why that sequence matters for your fly selection.Reading the river: vegetation is your friend—it feeds caddis larvae and signals where to drift (and what snags to expect).Soft-hackle smarts: think “legs forward” and a touch more bulk at the head when imitating the pupa rising to the film.Skate the dry: flip the hackle, keep it riding high, and add motion—then trail a soft hackle to cover the pupa coming up behind it.The evening show: look for bouncing egg-laying females in the last couple hours of light; they can trigger some of the most visual eats of the day.Match what's actually there: kick-net a riffle, turn a rock, photograph shucks and adults in scum lines, then tie (or buy) to size/shape/color.Same river, different bugs: expect color and size shifts by section or tributary—one box won't fit the whole tailwater.Field tip: if you're wading and find risers, park and run that skating-dry/soft-hackle combo until the light fades. If you want us to go deeper on bugs or do a tying-focused follow-up, let us know—your ideas drive future episodes. #185 - Before longboards hit storefronts and GoPros hit helmets, Jack Smith and two friends pointed a 1969 Firebird toward the horizon and skated into history. Jack Smith talks about how a simple leapfrog relay turned a wild idea into the first recorded skateboard crossing of the United States—and how that journey shaped everything that came after. We trace the arc from clay “crumble” wheels to first‑gen urethane and on to the big trucks and 70mm wheels that made 1980s distance skating faster and safer. Jack breaks down the daily cadence—early pushes, midday pool stops, evening miles—and the small-town moments that still stick: a Minnesota marquee that read “Welcome skateboarders,” a West Virginia diner that wasn't sure what to make of three long‑haired kids, and strangers in Ohio who handed over house keys and dinner plates without hesitation. He tells the story that stays with him most: a rain delay at Yellowstone, a missed geyser, and a roadside rescue that, decades later, circled back through a single email to confirm a life saved. We also explore how purpose and technology reshaped the ride. Jack's 2003 crossing raised awareness for Lowe syndrome after the loss of his son; his 2018 electric skateboard traverse with his wife leading a camper van turned battery swaps into a moving pit crew. Along the way, he argues for the slower road—South Dakota's rolling Highway 212, atlas pages over pure GPS—and why the “real America” lives beyond freeway exits. Jack shares updates on his feature screenplay and novel, plans for a 50‑year retrace in an electric VW, and a shout‑out to the new generation of cross‑country pushers proving that momentum beats perfection.Hit play to learn how to design a relay that works, dial your long‑distance skate setup, and rethink what's possible when you stop waiting for perfect conditions. If this conversation moves you, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a review to help more curious listeners find the road. Which back road would you choose next?To learn more about Jack give him a follow on Instagram @jack_smith_morro_bay. Want to be a guest on Journey with Jake? re beards still neat? We wonder, mainly because we’re older and less hip—plus we noticed the significant lack of facial hair upon the plastic grimace of Labubus, so shit’s been tripping us up to say the least. Join Ed, George, and Andrew as they dish on the latest news of the concerning buyout of EA, Microsoft’s ludicrous price hikes across the market, and the main topic for the episode, what we’ve all been playing in yet another edition of “What’s in your Console?” The list spans to Borderlands 4, Hollowknight: Silksong, Sonic Wings Reunion, Silent Hill f, Skate, Tokyo Jungle, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Hades II, Persona 3 Aegis, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Royale, Lost Soul Aside, and a ton of Magic: The Gathering talk that’s filled with all of the oogling and speccing you could hope for! Shawn Robertson is up there with the most naturally gifted athletes I've ever worked with. At 13, he was throwing an 80 mph fastball and dominating team sports, then he found inline and rode that rocketship. By the time he was 15, he left Texas on his first plane ever and within months, he was traveling the world, winning contests and putting out incredible street parts all in the name of skating. Now, the poor kid from Texas had all the things thanks to a Levis Sponsorship, working with GAP, plus all the core skate brands. Shawn had “it” and could do anything and still command respect. But an injury, combined with no insurance, forced Shawn to pivot to professional frisbee golf among other things. Fellow wild Texas skater, Ryan Dawes asks the Inappropriate Questions.
