In this episode, I speak with Peter about his work on narcissism and its place within the broader spectrum of personality disorders. He shares that when he was in graduate school for literature, he was required to participate in a course of psychotherapy—an experience that sparked his interest in the field and eventually led him to pursue clinical training. Peter explains that he became increasingly interested in personality disorders, especially after having his own personal encounter with someone exhibiting narcissistic traits. This experience helped shape his focus in this area of study. He notes that the field of psychotherapy often views narcissism through the lens of “hurt people hurt people”—the idea that harmful behavior stems from unresolved trauma. While that framework can sometimes be useful, Peter believes it may also lead people to remain in harmful dynamics for too long because they extend too much empathy and assume the behavior is unintentional. He discusses meta-analytic research on twins showing that roughly 50% of psychological traits are heritable; in some studies, narcissistic traits have been found to be up to 79% heritable. Peter emphasizes the importance of clinicians and clients understanding that, in many cases, narcissistic individuals do know their behavior is harmful and continue it because it benefits them. This runs counter to the prevailing idea that such behavior is purely unconscious or trauma-driven. He acknowledges that this perspective is controversial and that he has received criticism for challenging long-standing therapeutic assumptions. When working with clients, Peter helps them navigate the cognitive dissonance between their painful or abusive experiences and their belief that the narcissistic individual “didn't mean it” or was simply reacting from trauma. The belief that someone is merely “wounded” and reacting can keep people in unhealthy relationships far beyond what is safe or reasonable. We also discussed the differences between narcissism and antisocial personality disorder. Peter explains that one way to determine whether a person is workable is to assess their collaborative capacity—and, importantly, for therapists not to assume there is mutual agreement on collaboration or shared responsibility. He underscores the importance of validating victims of these relational dynamics, reminding them that no matter how much self-work they do, they may not be able to improve the relationship because the problem may not be about them at all. Part of his work involves helping clients reconnect with their sense of self, especially when an invalidating environment has led them to doubt their own perceptions, question their reality, or even wonder whether they are a “good” person. Peter Salerno, PsyD, is a Doctor of Psychology, retired licensed psychotherapist, and nationally recognized expert on personality disorders and pathological relationships. Over the course of his career, he has specialized in personality disorders, family trauma, complex trauma, and pathological abuse. He was trained and qualified to administer the Hare Psychopathy Checklist–Revised (PCL-R), the gold standard for identifying psychopathy in clinical and forensic settings. He was also a featured expert in the docuseries Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil, streaming on Hulu and Disney+. His work has always been driven by a passion for understanding the human mind and helping people make sense of some of its most challenging and misunderstood conditions. Today, he uses that expertise to help people around the world understand painful, confusing, and often manipulative relationship dynamics. While he no longer practices traditional therapy, he offers remote consultations focused on clarity, insight, and practical decision-making—not treatment.

In 2012, NYPD officer Gilberto Valle's wife made a horrifying discovery: thousands of online chats where her husband discussed kidnapping, torturing, cooking, and eating women...including her.Valle was a member of Dark Fetish Net, a website for extreme sexual fantasies, where he shared detailed plans about cannibalizing real people he knew. The FBI arrested Valle and charged him with conspiracy to commit kidnapping. The evidence was disturbing: graphic conversations about cooking women alive, over 100 unauthorized police database searches on potential victims, Google searches for "how to make chloroform," and real-world meetings with his targets. But here's the twist: Valle never kidnapped anyone. Never attempted to. Never took any concrete steps beyond online conversations and Google searches. Valle claimed it was all fantasy role-play. Prosecutors argued it was a genuine conspiracy. After a twelve-day trial featuring gruesome evidence and disturbing testimony, the jury convicted him. Valle faced life in federal prison...This case exploded into a national debate about thoughtcrime, free speech, and the limits of conspiracy law. Can you be imprisoned for disturbing fantasies? “Predator: Badlands” is one of those rare movies. You already expect something good after “Prey,” but then you watch this and it turns out to be one of the most satisfying action films of the year. Disney clearly believed in it too, bumping the budget to about 105 million, which is a big jump from “Prey's” 65 million.Dan Trachtenberg is officially three for three. “Prey,” “Killer of Killers,” (also released in2025, on Hulu and awesome) and now “Badlands.” He delivers a confident, fast, beautifully paced movie that never wastes a moment. It also works as a complete standalone. No homework required. You don't need to be a Predator fan or even a sci-fi fan. The movie just pulls you in as a flat-out fun, kickass action experience.The details are great. The runtime is a perfect one hour and forty-seven minutes. The movie lightly introduces Yautja culture without slowing anything down, and the world-building is clear, exciting, and leaves the door open for the future. There's even a subtle crossover nod that never pulls focus.Elle Fanning is incredible. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi brings a whole new life to the Predator character, making it both terrifying and surprisingly sympathetic. The Kalisk creature is a very fun addition. The invented language is a cool touch. And the villain is genuinely strong without giving anything away.The sound design is excellent, the VFX are top tier, and New Zealand looks unbelievable on screen. Trachtenberg blends real landscapes with massive effects in a way that makes the world feel alive.If there's one small con: you just hope the crossover tease doesn't jinx the success the movie has earned so far.“Badlands” is in theaters now and will likely hit digital platforms in December and stream on Hulu or Disney+ in early 2026.

On this week's show we look at the phenomenon of watching a little screen while simultaneously watching a big screen.  We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: New data shows ESPN, Fox One both over 2 million subscribers Get Disney+ and Hulu for a combined $5 per month for 12 months Second Screen Viewing  The phrase "Second Screen Viewing" is when a person watches TV and simultaneously uses a secondary device like a smartphone, tablet, or laptop to engage with content related (or unrelated) to what's on the TV.  On this week's show we will focus on the "unrelated" aspect  Second Screen Viewing and how it is affecting what you watch on your TVs Second-screen behavior has become a common companion to TV viewing allowing viewers to engage in social TV by live-tweeting or posting reactions on platforms like X (Twitter), Instagram, or TikTok—especially during live sports, reality TV voting, or award shows—while following conversations through hashtags like #SuperBowl or #TheBachelor.  But what we will be really focusing on today, many people simply multitask with unrelated activities—scrolling social media, texting, gaming, or working—while the TV plays in the background. So what are the TV producers doing about this phenomenon? Simplifying Content for "Background" or "Half-Attention" Viewing    Producers are increasingly designing shows that don't require undivided focus, reducing the risk of viewers abandoning content if they glance away. This includes "dumbing down" narratives to accommodate distractions like social media scrolling.  Streamlined Storytelling - Streamers like Netflix instruct showrunners to create "second screen enough" scripts—simple plots, minimal complex dialogue, and easy-to-follow arcs that allow viewers to dip in and out without confusion. For instance, Justine Bateman, a writer-director, reported notes from streamers emphasizing that "the viewer's primary screen is their phone," so shows avoid twists that demand full attention. This approach has sparked debate. Critics argue it stifles creativity, turning TV into "background noise" rather than compelling drama, but it boosts retention metrics for casual viewers. Integrating Interactivity and Social TV Features  - To pull attention back to the main screen (or extend engagement), producers build in real-time elements that encourage phone use tied to the show, fostering community and loyalty without full distraction. Companion Apps and Voting: Apps sync with broadcasts for polls, stats, or exclusive content. Dancing with the Stars added in-app voting and a "Star Panel" rating system in 2024, letting fans score performances live—boosting participation without leaving the TV. Similarly, Love Island (ITV Studios) uses apps for couple-voting, turning second screens into engagement hubs. So basically, TV producers aren't eliminating second screens; they're evolving with them and dumbing down what you watch on an expensive 75" "Secondary" screen.  Commentary  How about this for an idea? Make compelling content! My wife and two daughters are constantly on their phones when we watch TV together. You know when they aren't? When watching high quality shows that require your attention. Examples include, Last Frontier and Lone Wolf. Shows like Survivor (and don't get me started on how they ruined that show) barely require 20% of your attention. The fact is, it's easier to dumb down content for people who are obsessed with their smart phones than it is to make compelling content. Yes, streaming has opened the door to way more content but unfortunately most of it is not worth watching. And I know I am right in this assessment because studies show 70-90% of viewers engage in second screen viewing regularly.
