This week on PREVIOUSLY ON…, Jason and Rosie break down the new trailers for two highly anticipated sequels: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which shattered the record for most views in its first 24 hours, and Dune: Part Three, both set to release later this year. Next, they dive into the shocking news that ABC has pulled the latest season of The Bachelorette just days before its premiere, after a 2023 video surfaced of Taylor Frankie Paul, who rose to fame on Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, throwing a chair and assaulting her ex. Finally, they wrap things up with a round of rapid-fire headlines, including the passing of action star Chuck Norris at 86; the announcement that Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence will star in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming thriller What Happens at Night; the cancellation of Hulu’s planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, which had Sarah Michelle Gellar and Chloé Zhao attached; and news that Val Kilmer, who passed away in 2025, will have his likeness recreated with AI, to star in As Deep As the Grave, a film he was cast in but unable to shoot due to declining health. This week, Kate is breaking her hiatus for a special report recorded before Thursday's news that ABC was scrapping TFP's season of The Bachelorette. Ultimately, she decided this episode was still a relevant conversation to have, given that she and her guest (Sam Dalton, LCSW @sam.the.therapistt) talked through the systems and cycles that made this week's fallout unsurprising long before the video leaked. Together, they unpack the rose colored glass ceiling of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, where women perform rebellion without ever actually leaving the structures that constrain them. They discuss how ABC and Hulu built a cross-platform content pipeline on top of a woman's unresolved trauma, why the show's premise was always rooted in Taylor's reactivity, the pattern of Dakota's strategic sabotage, what it means when healing requires the opposite of what reality TV rewards, and the uncomfortable question of why so many of us, Kate included, glossed over a 2023 aggravated assault charge that was packaged as the starting point of a redemption arc. Content note: this episode discusses domestic violence, child abuse allegations, and toxic relationship dynamics. SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Order Kate's NYT Bestselling book, One in a Millennial here! What is Happening with The Bachelorette? w/ Reality Steve Dive into the world of reality TV analysis with Mike Bloom and guest Reality Steve Carbone as they discuss the latest news about The Bachelorette's recently canceled season. This episode explains the events leading to the cancellation, examining how Taylor Frankie Paul's domestic violence history and a newly released video influenced ABC's decision just days before the planned premiere. Mike and Reality Steve review Taylor Frankie Paul's path from social media celebrity to Bachelorette lead, noting how her past, documented in police reports and covered by entertainment news, did not initially deter ABC or Hulu. They outline the sequence of events: Taylor's media appearances, the investigation into new allegations, and the suspension of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. The discussion highlights how new video evidence influenced network executives and public opinion. Key highlights from the discussion include: ABC and Hulu's decision process after seeing the video surface online despite prior knowledge from police records. Analysis of Taylor's complicated relationship history and the network’s choice of “stunt casting” to revive a franchise in decline. Perspectives on accountability, Taylor's released statements, and the contrasting reactions from fans and commentators. The ripple effects on production, sponsorships, and the show’s future, including speculation about possible legal actions and the fate of other contestants. Thoughts on whether The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives will resume filming, how reality TV networks vet future leads, and the shift in focus to Taylor's family and well-being. The episode raises pointed questions: Will this cancellation change how reality TV casts its stars? What happens to the franchise next, or to Taylor and Dakota's ongoing drama? Listen to unravel how real-life controversy shapes the fate of a reality TV giant, and catch insights from Reality Steve's daily coverage. I had a chance to sit down with actor/director/producer, Chris Greene, from guest starring and voice over for the new Hulu series Murdah, and previously working on Queen of the South, and ATLANTA. Chris opened up and discussed:-What was that exact moment acting “clicked”?-What were moments when you almost walked away?-What was it like being apart of a storytelling ecosystem like ATLANTA?I enjoyed what advice he tells actors who feel discouraged or lost, and what he teaches them about staying focused on the craft.Support Chris Greene on Instagram:@REALCHRISGREENE@jamir_smithJamirSmith.comIHeart Radio:TheJamirSmithShow

This week we bounce from the eternal debate over pie superiority (and some truly questionable anti-pie opinions) into sci-fi revivals, strange travel stories, and the art of a good ending—before closing things out with a genuinely unsettling short story that may or may not leave you side-eyeing your bathroom forever. Real Life We kick things off with the most important topic we've ever covered: pie. Favorites, non-favorites, and a few takes that might genuinely damage friendships. No spoilers—but some of us have very strong opinions. Ben brings a little sci-fi hope (and caution) with talk of a possible return to the world of Firefly. Between comics and expanded universe material—like the recent developments covered over at SYFY Wire (https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/firefly-brand-new-verse-comic-boom-studios) there's clearly still life in the 'verse. But as always, the question is: should it come back, or is it better left alone? Meanwhile, the planned Buffy reboot/sequel has officially stalled out at Hulu, which… honestly might be for the best. [bad opinion AI] Devon takes us on a trip to Eureka Springs, a town built on the idea that its waters had healing properties. It's got that old-world charm mixed with just enough weird to make it interesting—complete with a glass-and-wood beam church, ziplining adventures, and a full-on St. Patrick's Day parade. A little history, a little adrenaline, a little chaos. Steven celebrates Pie Day the right way, follows it up with an all-day beach trip, and then pivots straight into Pirate Borg prep. There's a game on the horizon, and the hype is real. Future or Now Ben takes the wheel with a surprisingly thoughtful discussion about endings—what makes them work, why they matter, and how often they completely fall apart. This leads into Babylon 5 (with a shoutout to Josh), and if you want a refresher or a reason to revisit it, check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z54XNJivHOs From there, it's all about what's next in Star Trek. Starfleet Academy Season 1 has people talking, and the future lineup is stacked: Strange New Worlds Season 4 is on the way this summer, with Season 5 already lining up some heavy hitters—including Thomas Jane stepping in as Dr. McCoy and Kai Murakami as Sulu. And then there's the truly baffling situation: Star Trek: Prodigy just won an Emmy… and is basically impossible to watch. If you want to feel equal parts excited and frustrated, here's the breakdown: https://trekmovie.com/2026/03/04/star-trek-prodigy-wins-emmy-for-animation/ Steven dives into some fun (and slightly chaotic) tech territory with green screen experimentation. Corridor Crew breaks it down here: https://youtu.be/3Ploi723hg4?si=Mu_9whhpY_gvJldY and if you want to mess with it yourself, the open-source tool Corridor Key is here: https://github.com/nikopueringer/CorridorKey Book Club Next week, we're checking out Arco!—you can find it on Apple TV right here: https://tv.apple.com/us/movie/arco/umc.cmc.16jgcgmdg48xptfayroel0yvy We'll report back on whether it's worth your time (and money). This week, we read What We Mean When We Talk About the Hole in the Bathroom by Angela Liu: https://www.uncannymagazine.com/article/what-we-mean-when-we-talk-about-the-hole-in-the-bathroom/ And look—this one sparked some debate. Ben tries to walk Steven through it… because it didn't quite click at first. But Devon cuts straight through the noise and nails it: this is a horror story. Not loud, not obvious—but deeply, quietly unsettling in a way that sticks with you longer than you'd like. One More Thing Ben's got boots on the ground this weekend at the Beacon Art Show Ekphrastic Poetry Reading, happening Saturday (3/21) at 2pm at the SLO United Methodist Church. If you're local, go check it out—support some art, hear some poetry, and maybe report back. If you've got strong pie opinions, thoughts on whether Firefly should come back, or theories about that bathroom story, we want to hear them. And if you haven't yet—subscribe, follow, and share the show with someone who enjoys a good mix of chaos, sci-fi, and questionable food takes.
In this deeply moving — and one of our all-time favorite — conversations, we take a beautiful, funny, honest dive inside the “wonderful, dangerous” mind of Tracee Ellis Ross. Episode 376 | Live From America Podcast Amanda Knox joins Live From America to discuss her return to Italy and the story behind the Hulu documentaries about her case. We explore the search for truth, media narratives, and what happens when the world believes a story before the facts are fully understood. In this episode, Amanda Knox reflects on her experience being wrongfully convicted in Italy and how the events shaped the global conversation about justice and media responsibility. We discuss two major documentary projects: Hulu's "The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox" and her new documentary "Mouth of the Wolf," where Knox returns to Italy and confronts the prosecutor who pursued her case. The conversation examines how narratives are constructed in high-profile criminal cases and asks a deeper question: Does the truth exist if no one believes it? Amanda also reflects on the long aftermath of global notoriety, the challenge of reclaiming identity after a public trial, and the responsibility of storytellers when real lives are involved. Topics Covered Hulu documentary The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox Amanda Knox returning to Italy Her documentary Mouth of the Wolf Confronting the prosecutor in her case Truth vs public narrative Media responsibility in true crime The Italian justice system How global stories reshape personal identity About the Show Live From America Podcast explores law, politics, culture, and current events through expert interviews and debate. UX hiring insights from a UX veteran with 25+ years in UX and product. In this episode, Sarah Doody interviews Dan Maccarone, co-founder of Hard Candy Shell and Charming Robot, fractional Chief Product Officer, and a UX expert who's worked on products for Hulu, Rent the Runway, Foursquare, and the Wall Street Journal. In the episode Dan shares about what he actually looks for when hiring UX people (spoiler: it's not your Figma skills).Dan shares why he doesn't care about tools, why he conducts interviews over drinks instead of in conference rooms, and how he evaluates candidates based on curiosity, empathy, and how they think, not what software they know. He also gets into career reinvention, the rise of fractional leadership roles, and why your hobbies outside of UX might matter more than your case studies. If you're a UX or Product professional navigating your next career move, this conversation will challenge what you think hiring managers care about. What's discussed in this episode:Why Dan has hired people who didn't know Figma — and doesn't careWhat curiosity and a humanities background signal to a hiring managerWhy Dan prefers to conducts interviews with candidates over coffee or drinks, not in conference roomsHow he uses observation and empathy cues to evaluate candidates (the same way you'd do user research)Why he hates design assignments and considers them insultingWhat "career reinvention" looks like after 25 years in UX and how to know when it's timeThe real requirements for going fractional (and why it's not for everyone)Why your identity and hobbies outside of work actually make you better at your jobHow he's re-invented his own UX career multiple times

When Shogun was released last year on Hulu, it featured a great cast, spectacular visuals, and a gripping story. It was a commercial and critical success on release, and again when awards season came around. So of course, academic historians fretted. Were they concerned that it painted sixteenth-century Japan as another Game of Thrones (with more ninjas and fewer dragons)? Maybe a little. But most scholars were anxious because they understood how important the show would be, how profound an impact it would have, for years to come, on the public's perception of Japanese culture and history — all the more so because the story captures a moment of extraordinary significance, in such vivid detail, on such a vast canvas. In this talk, David Spafford, Associate Professor of Premodern Japanese History at the University of Pennsylvania, takes a closer look at the complexities of the period and unpacks why this particular moment in history matters so much — and how the hit Shogun series does (or doesn't) help us understand it. David Spafford was born and raised in Rome and first moved to the States to earn his PhD. He is currently Associate Professor of Premodern Japanese History in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses on samurai and the invention of the Way of the Warrior, on early modern urbanization, and on premodern law and violence. He is the author of A Sense of Place: The Political Landscape in Late Medieval Japan (2013), which explores the resilience of medieval regional identities and cultural geographies during the early Warring States period. In recent years, he has written about the role and boundaries of kinship in warrior society between 1450 and 1650. He is currently completing a short monograph on the writings of a sixteenth-century widow, known to us only as Jukeini, the only woman to rule a warrior domain. Paul Atkins is professor of Japanese in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he teaches and writes about the literature, drama, and culture of medieval Japan. He holds a Ph.D. in Japanese from Stanford University. Professor Atkins was awarded the William F. Sibley Memorial Translation Prize by the University of Chicago in 2011 and the Kyoko Selden Memorial Translation Prize by Cornell University in 2021 for his translations of classical Japanese texts into English. Publications include the monographs Teika: The Life and Works of a Medieval Japanese Poet (University of Hawai'i Press, 2017) and Revealed Identity: The Noh Plays of Komparu Zenchiku (Center of Japanese Studies, University of Michigan, 2006) as well as a number of articles. Presented by Town Hall Seattle and Washin Kai. This event is sponsored by the UW Center for Japanese Studies and the UW Department of Asian Languages and Literature. What happens when you take the structure of a movie you love—and try to breathe new life into it? In this episode of the podcast, Jacob Krueger explores In the Blink of an Eye, the ambitious sci-fi drama written by Colby Day that premiered at Sundance and is now streaming on Hulu. Deeply influenced by Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, the film unfolds across three timelines connected by shared questions about death, evolution, and the fragile miracle of human life. Comparing the two films as a case study, Jake explores three deceptively simple craft lessons: how writers can repurpose the structure of the movies that inspire them toward new ends; why theme only lands when the writer is genuinely wrestling with it; and what you can learn about good dialogue from a family of grunting neanderthals. Along the way, he shows how even strong films with beautiful performances can lose their emotional punch the moment a writer stops trusting the audience.
