The documentary has achieved rising popularity over the past two decades, thanks to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Despite this fact, documentary studies still tends to favor works that appeal primarily to specialists and scholars. Reclaiming Popular Documentary (Indiana UP, 2021) reverses this longstanding tendency by showing that documentaries can be--and are--made for mainstream or commercial audiences. Editors Christie Milliken and Steve Anderson, who consider popular documentary to be a subfield of documentary studies, embrace an expanded definition of popular to acknowledge documentary's many evolving forms, including branded entertainment, fictional hybrids, and works with audience participation. Together, these essays address emerging documentary forms--including web-docs, virtual reality, immersive journalism, viral media, interactive docs, and video-on-demand--and offer the critical tools that viewers need in order to analyze contemporary documentaries and consider how they are persuaded by and represented in documentary media. By combining perspectives of scholars and makers, Reclaiming Popular Documentary brings new understandings and international perspectives to familiar texts using critical models that will engage media scholars and fans alike. We're discussing the excellent Y The Last Man Episode 7 "My Mother Saw A Monkey". One of the best episodes this season so far we have lots to discuss in our spoiler filled podcast. Y The Last Man Episode 7 Synopsis and Details Based on the comic series Y The Last Man by: Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra Showrunner: Eliza Clark Episode Written by: Olivia Purnell Episode Directed by: Lauren Wolkstein Leaving Boston on their way to San Francisco Yorick, Ampersand, Agent 355 and Dr. Alison Mann hit a snag - they are being followed by army personnel who are investigating the missing helicopters. Holding up in a church, 355 makes plans to lure in their pursuers, but relations deteriorate when Yorick discovers that 355 hadn't contacted his mother. As 355 enacts her plan she realises that Alison and Yorick have left to make their own way to San Francisco. In the surrounding woods the army personnel, in radio contact with the Pentagon, are taken down and sedated one by one but only after one of their group has come face-to-face with Yorick Brown. Meanwhile in the Pentagon, Kimberley keeps up the pressure on Jennifer Brown as she begins to form an alliance with former cabinet secretary Regina Oliver, indicating to Regina that President Brown may not be as untouchable as she at first thinks. As the encounter to bring in Agent Sarah Bergman is relayed over the radio, Jennifer becomes anxious as she realises that her secret could be revealed. But as the radio goes dead and her secret remains safe, she and Regina Oliver clash over the right thing to do as Regina searches for chinks in President Brown's armour. At the Price Maxx supermarket, Hero, Nora and Sam start to weigh up their new surroundings and survivors. While Sam, unnerved by their hostile behaviour towards him, wants to leave. Nora grapples with the oddities of this group of women in front of her young and impressionable daughter. Meanwhile, Hero, not wanting to get back to her mother anytime soon, is increasingly seduced by the charismatic leader, Roxanne, especially after admitting to murder. Introduction: Host Michael Rand watched the new-look NHL on TNT on Wednesday and came away with a positive outlook. There's something about the production quality on TNT that has always been high, and the channel has had massive success with its NBA studio show. If it can keep working to brand the NHL the same way -- having Charles Barkley playing goalie for Wayne Gretzky on Wednesday's debut was a good start -- the league will be in good hands. 5:00: Jason Gurwin from The Streamable joins the show for an update on where we stand with fans' ability -- and inability -- to watch Bally Sports North. Subscribers to Hulu and YouTube TV have been without BSN (formerly Fox Sports North) for about a year now, and there's no relief in sight. What we need now is a recalibration of our expectations. The problem is that for cord-cutters who don't want an expensive cable or satellite package, any sort of direct-to-consumer app offering a full package of in-market games they want doesn't seem to be on the immediate horizon. So viewers are stuck between the recent past and the distant future. 18:00: Rand gives some expanded thoughts on how the TV question ties into the question of legal sports gambling, while answering several reader emails from the larger story he wrote Sunday about the explosion of sports betting nationwide and what it means for Minnesota. He also shares some personal experiences about betting on offshore apps, something that is widespread. 29:00: If you're not watching the WNBA right now, you're missing out.
