The beginning of the year is a time for a lot of us to really dive into a clear goal or focus for our business. So, what are you really committing to this year? How can you approach it from a place of surrender knowing that everything is going to work out (but not exactly the way you want, because when is that ever the case, right?!) In today's episode, I'm diving into pussified goal setting, what you ACTUALLY need to focus on if you want to scale to high-growth (hint: it's not revenue!), and how to stop sabotaging your goals and show up for your biz as the you who already has all of your juiciest desires.  I dive into: Why you can have everything you want in your life & biz - but you have to understand THIS principle first! Friend and fellow dietitian, Lily Nichols is back to catch us up on what she's been up to and fill us in on the latest in nutrition research. Since our first episode together, Lily has been busy advocating for updated dietary guidelines, especially as they relate to pregnancy and postpartum. She is the author of two books: Real Food for Pregnancy and Real Food for Gestational Diabetes. Lily is also the co-founder of Women's Health Nutrition Academy, an organization dedicated to providing continuing education in women's health.   In this episode, Lily and I take a deep dive into all things protein. There is a long-held belief in dietetics that as long as you are getting enough total protein in your diet then your amino acid requirements will be met too.  Lily sets the record straight by pointing to new evidence that shows this simply isn't true. In fact, the need for the full array of amino acids for children is so important, that deficiencies during certain development periods can cause irreversible problems. There's so much to cover in this episode that we actually ran out of time so stay tuned as I'm sure to have Lily on the show again. Even if you are not pregnant or considering getting pregnant, you're sure to find something interesting in this episode. Listen in to hear us rant about the need for protein and so much more including: - Why the RDA (recommended dietary allowance) for protein needs an update - All things B12  - Cheap nutrient-dense food options - The need for culturally appropriate nutrition recommendations  - A thought experiment about the environmental cost of being unhealthy - Why meat does not have to be grass-fed to be healthy - Why nutrition professionals need real-world perspective - Our personal results from continuous glucose monitoring and why everyone should try it Resources: Women's Health Nutrition Academy Sacred Cow Research Paper: Animal Source Foods, Rich in Amino Acids Important for Linear Growth and Development of Young Children in Low- and Middle-Income Countries US News and World Report “Best” Diets Levels Lily's books: Real Food for Pregnancy  Real Food for Gestational Diabetes Lily's Articles Protein Requirements in Pregnancy are Higher Than Previously Thought Vegetarian Diet in Pregnancy: Nutrients of Concern Choline in Pregnancy: Folate's Long-Lost Cousin Budget-Friendly Prenatal Nutrition Following Real Food for Pregnancy Principles Why Prenatal Nutrition Guidelines Needs to be Updated Liver and Organ Meat: Nutritional Benefits & How to Make it Palatable Connect with Lily: Website: Lily Nichols, RDN Instagram: @lilynicholsrdn Twitter: @LilyNicholsRDN Facebook: Lily Nichols, RDN LinkedIn: Lily Nichols, RDN *** Episode Credits: Thank you to all who've made this show possible. Before she got married, her husband promised her he didn't want children - but now he's changed his mind. Could happily childfree Rose will herself to become a mother in order to save her relationship, and if so, what might her life look like? Author Freitas found herself in this very scenario in her real life, and it made her question everything - her lack of a maternal instinct, her worth as a woman, what kind of future she could hope for, without children - or her husband - in it. It was so enlightening to speak to someone who's looked at the childfree choice from every possible angle, as a scholar of religion and gender studies, and the author of a Sliding Doors-style plot that dares to ask: what if...?Learn more about Donna at donnafreitas.com and follow her on Instagram at @donnafreitas.writer. Some people love the outdoors. Others are obsessed with it. By her own definition, Puja Seth falls into the "obsessed" category. As an avid adventure traveler, she realized that the majority of outdoor gear was designed for men by men.  So she set out to change this. She interviewed over 300 women, asking, listening and diving deep into what they needed from their outdoor & travel gear - finding out what was missing, what sucked, what was great, what was on their wish list. After listening to all the feedback she distilled down into three core values that seemed unanimous amongst those women: Obsess over quality + fit. Make it sustainably. Build an outdoor culture for women.  And that's exactly what she's doing with Drifted.

While environmental sustainability goals have become a high priority for consumers and businesses with a global call to action on climate change, other ESG issues haven't gotten as much attention. For many organizations advocating for human rights in the supply chain is a material priority, and one of the most pressing issues involves ensuring there is no forced labor and child labor in supply chains. But how do you know? -In its 2016 study, the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that 40.3 million people worldwide were victims of modern slavery at any given time, 25 million of whom were in forced labor. -To narrow the focus further, an estimated 16 million people were exploited in the private sector. A few years earlier, in 2014, the ILO estimated that forced labor generated annual profits estimated at USD 150 billion. -Women and girls are disproportionately affected, accounting for 71% of those affected by modern slavery. Children represent one-quarter of the total number of victims. President Biden on Dec 23, 2021 signed into law the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, a bipartisan bill that bans imports from China's Xinjiang region unless the importer can prove they were not made with forced labor. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/biden-uyghur-labor-law/2021/12/23/99e8d048-6412-11ec-a7e8-3a8455b71fad_story.html In Episode 68, Justin Dillon, CEO of FRDM shares that, “The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us how broken and opaque supply chains truly are. Supply chain operations and oversight has lagged far behind the innovation curve. Companies today are expected to solve bigger and deeper problems in their supply chains, such as environmental and human rights risks.” ➡️ I am proud to have Justin back as a retuning guest on MLK day to kick off 2022 and to help organizations ensure human rights are protected across global networks by: – Understanding and mapping your network -Organizing your company's supplier and spend data – Creating a predictive bill of materials for everything you buy and applying estimates about environmental, social and business continuity risks – Helping you engage with suppliers, using its toolkit to reduce risk and increase your resilience – Producing helpful reports for your team, stakeholders and regulators – Helping you track improvements to your supply chain and constantly improving your resilience FRDM is the next wave in predictive and proactive ESG risk resilience to realize sustainable outcomes. Organizations that lead on sustainability and impact do not approach them as secondary objectives. They integrate the related objectives into their core motivation, radically altering the corporate equation for success. Companies face numerous barriers to addressing modern slavery, but technology can be an enabler for change. Modernizing the supply chain for greater transparency can create a more visibility and equity for all. FREE WHITE PAPER ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eEr_hWv7 Learn more FRDM and Justin here - FRDM.co

Heal Thy Self

Knowledge Bomb: Dr. G talks about the top 3 disruptors for fertility. If you are planning on having a child, these are the top interventions to address.  Guest segment: Maral and Allison of the Tourmaline Collective join to educate us on midwifery. They teach us what a midwife is, how they work with the parents, and dispel any myths on this process. Is a natural birth safe? What does a holistic approach to pregnancy look like? How do we support the parents pre-conception and post-partum. All these and more in this special segment.  Maral Shabak Bio: Maral began her Midwifery career in 2014 when she was accepted into Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery. Leading up to finding her path, she earned B.A. degrees in Anthropology and Women's Studies. Her experience at the University of California, Irvine taught her that we must use our specific skills to bring forth positive change. Maral was born in Iran and moved to the U.S. at the age of 6. Going through such a large transition from one culture to another taught her that we must be open and flexible in order to move forward; we cannot hold tightly onto traditions simply because we haven't been exposed to another way. Maral's goal is to bridge the gap between M.D.s and Midwives so that we may blend our cultures and select practices that are truly optimal. She firmly believes that if we can provide choice, confidence, and peace at the moment of birth for families, we can ensure a future full of those same qualities. Allison Tartari Bio: Allison found her way to midwifery care through the pregnancy and birth of her fourth child. She knew she wanted to help support women during pregnancy, and avoid the unnecessary interventions she encountered with her other children. She became passionate about educating families on other, safer options for birth. She became a D.O.N.A trained doula and followed that path for 8 years, attending many births in and out of the hospital setting. It became clear to her that most people are not aware that they have rights, that they can say “No” to a doctor or nurse. She had to share this knowledge and decided to become a midwife. She applied and was accepted to the Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery in 2014. During her doula career and experience as a student midwife she learned that consistency in care provides better outcomes, which is a major component our system is lacking. Out of this passion for holistic, integrative healthcare Tourmaline Birth and Wellness Center was born. Allison, Josie and Maral, Licensed Midwives came together to create Tourmaline Birth and Wellness Collective. As midwives they saw a need for collaborative holistic care for the growing families that they serve. As three different generations of midwives they are committed to serving families at each and every stage. Whether it be preconception, family planning, pregnancy, postpartum, miscarriage or well women care. One of our goals at Tourmaline is to improve maternal mortality rates in the United States. The United States was recently labeled one of the most dangerous places to give birth in the developed world, with more than 60% of pregnancy-related deaths in the US being preventable. Tourmaline's partnership with Thrive Wellness Collective a 501c3 expands midwifery access and education to everyone, regardless of economic status to improve birth outcomes and lifelong wellness one family at a time. Jasmine Loh was enjoying a pleasant lunch at work when the aneurysms hidden in her brain suddenly burst. Her world went blank briefly while the stroke settled into this thirty-something's head. A few minutes later, she reconnected with reality and went back to work to continue validating the performance of semiconductor fabrication equipment. That was in 2014. She left her job in semiconductor manufacturing due to her stroke, wrote a book, taught herself email marketing, and now does digital services for friends and clients In 2021 I met Jaz  through Clubhouse.  She co-hosts an online support group there from her home in Singapore. I enjoyed hearing Jaz's perspective on her stroke story, her dreams in the early days, and her experience of nearly "crossing over." The Winter Olympics begin on 4th February in Beijing and Team GB will be sending around 50 athletes with the hopes of bringing back a clutch of medals. The run up to the Games has been challenging – Covid has made competition extremely difficult for athletes and there have been diplomatic rows over China's human rights records - but who are our medal prospects? Chloe Tilley speaks to Georgina Harland, Britain's first ever female Chef de Mission and Lizzy Yarnold, Britain's most successful Winter Olympian. On Wednesday afternoon, 23-year-old school teacher Ashling Murphy was murdered while jogging along the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Ireland. It is believed that she was assaulted and killed by a man acting alone. The case has shocked the nation and revived concerns about women's safety in public spaces in Ireland and the UK. We speak to Irish Times reporter Jade Wilson and veteran activist Ailbhe Smyth, who spoke at a vigil for Ashling outside Irish parliament. Women diagnosed with cervical cell changes following cervical screening can be unprepared for the experience - they can feel ashamed, isolated and frightened, that's according to new research by Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust. Kate Sanger is head of policy, from the Trust. In a recent interview on Woman's Hour one guest talked about the limits having a child has placed on her and said she'd “make a better father than mother”. We explore what motherhood and fatherhood mean and the gender roles parents take on in society today. Lawyer Lucy McGrath is the biological mother of a six year old. She's also her family's main bread winner and known as mum. Her wife is mummy and the full time care giver. Do same sex relationships model alternative parenting styles or simply replicate the same power dynamics in a different guise? Lucy joins Emma Barnett to discuss the issues with the academic Dr Charlotte Faircloth. £29.4 billion was invested into UK tech companies in 2021. A record amount. Yet female founded companies only saw 1.1% of it. Down from 2.4% in 2020. Why are female run businesses finding it so hard to get investment funding? Debbie Wasskow OBE, entrepreneur and founder of Allbright, and Samira Ann Qassim, founder of Pink Salt Ventures, explain some of the problems women founders face when starting-up businesses - including finding funding. For women who want a career and a family, we might expect things would be easier today. After all, women have greater access to education and job opportunities. We've seen advances in reproductive health. And we've made inroads in anti-discrimination laws and policies. Yet gaps in pay and promotions remain a problem. Today's guest, Claudia Goldin, is a Harvard University economist who's spent her career studying women in the workplace. She believes there's an important factor we've overlooked, namely, greedy work. These are jobs with lots of financial upside and promotion potential for employees who can log long hours and take on big assignments at a moment's notice. And it's the work that women with children often take less advantage of compared to their partners. As a result, ambitious career women can find themselves stalled out and earning less. In her book, Career and Family: Women's Century-Long Journey Toward Equity, Claudia traces how women got here. Drawing on extensive data sets, she reveals five patterns in women's career and family behaviors: for women graduating from 1900-1910s, it was either career or family; for 1920-1930s graduates, jobs then families; with 1950s graduates, families then jobs; women graduating in the 1970s had careers then families; and, for women graduating in the 1980s-1990s it's been careers and family. Yet, for today's ambitious career women juggling career and family, it can mean increasing dissatisfaction with both. And in analyzing the way many careers today are structured, Claudia helps us understand why. It's an insightful way to understand a problem we've been living with for a long time. Good morning, beautiful. Our meditations this week revolve around the theme of silent mind. When we close our eyes and slow down, it can feel like the thoughts in our heads get even louder, constantly calling for our attention. This is completely normal. Practicing meditation does not mean we close our eyes and the thoughts magically disappear. It means we practice letting those thoughts go when we notice them, so we can find more silence in the space between. So we can experience more expansive moments of a silent mind. Have you ever wondered why we are so divided as women today? Then there's feminism, but it doesn't seem to be uniting us by addressing core problems we all face as women. In fact, in my experience, even conversations around the topic of what feminism is and isn't can be divisive. Maybe you feel that being a woman today comes with unrealistic expectations and a side of shame for not doing it all, not being enough, or not having it all together perfectly. You're worried you're not measuring up, and those worries are only enforced each time you compare yourself to your sister, your best friend, the mom's from your small group, the woman you sit behind at church, your neighbor, or the gal you follow on Instagram but you've never met. In today's episode, I'm sitting down with Leah Jacobson. Ten years ago, Leah founded The Guiding Star Project, care centers you can find around the nation that empower women to understand, embrace, and love their natural bodies. Today, it's her goal to spread the word about wholistic feminism - a principle that has been at the heart of The Guiding Star Project for the past decade. Leah writes about how the American women's movement has defined success in a way that keeps us always striving, but never fully arriving. Today, we're having a conversation about the history of different waves of feminism here in the US, the good and bad of the results of those waves of feminism, and how realizing and appreciating our distinctly female abilities to ovulate, gestate, and lactate can help us understand what wholistic feminism looks like in today's world - and provide the key answers to those struggles with expectations, comparison, and frankly, exhaustion, in our lives as women. If your health is taking a back seat to all of the things on your to-do list, your relationships are strained to the max, and you struggle to overcome guilt, shame, and fear, sister, this letter is for you. Topics we talked about in this episode: What wholistic feminism is and how it has shaped The Guiding Star Project for the past decade A brief overview of the different waves of feminism in American history How past waves of the feminist movements have failed us, and what grains of truth we can find in them What ovulating, gestating, and lactating reveal about our nature as women Leah's recommendations for daily practices that help you honor your feminine identity and your WHOLE health Resources you should check out after listening to this episode: Purchase a copy of “Wholistic Feminism” through Lumen Press to support The Guiding Star Project The Guiding Star Project Pope St. John Paul II's “Letter to Women” Pope St. John Paul II's “Evangelium Vitae” Pick up a copy of the new Letters to Women book today! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/letters-to-women/support

Welcome to the second week in our Wholehearted Rhythm Pillar series.  Every year I love coming back to exploring why the 3 Wholehearted Rhythm Pillars are so crucial - Word, Worship, and Write. This series is created to help you discover with God the new habits that will work for any new season you may find yourself in this New Year or in the middle of a year.  Last week, we had an inspiring conversation about why getting in the Word is so crucial. If you haven't checked that out, it's episode 227 and I highly recommend it! In today's episode, we are chatting about all things worship! My guest today is Rachel Marie Kang and wow, what pure joy to spend a half-hour with. As an Enneagram 4, she is a role model at appreciating the beauty around her, including the beauty in worship. She also will help you re-define what can “count” as worship in your life. Rachel Marie Kang is a New York native, born and raised just outside of New York City. A mixed woman of African American, Native American, Irish, and Dutch descent, she is a graduate of Nyack College (New York) from which she holds a degree in English with Creative Writing.
