10: On the oversimplification of society, have we taken making life easy too far?

In this week's episode, we discuss over-simplification. We look into Western society's obsession with 'making life easier'. From food delivery startups to speedy boarding, we're obsessed with saving time. But do we even do anything significant with the time we've saved? As consumers with busy lives, we've become accustomed to things happening at the push of a button. We shy away from resistance. We want to do things with the least amount of difficulty. We are, after all, creatures of comfort. Yet, with all that time we've saved it seems as though we fill it with more consumption and not with creation. TV, films and social media seem to have taken over the time we've saved. Therefore we're still too busy to do the hard work - for ourselves, for others or for society. As streetwear fashion becomes more popular than ever, can brands like Supreme and Palace continue to be classed as 'subculture'? Luxury fashion brands are noticing the waves that streetwear labels are making and collaborating with them, so shouldn't we just call streetwear brands “fashion” now? In a well overdue episode (we're sorry for our impromptu hiatus), we discuss how streetwear brands have evolved, why people rinse trends and whether hype can carry a brand name into longevity. 08: On influencer marketing and the power of perceived influence

The dominance of digital media has given rise to superstars online being able to command money in exchange for promoting products for brands. There are two types of ‘influencers’ at the moment, those who influence culturally and do so because they are genuinely cool, (i.e. it comes organically and they love to do what they do) and those whose influence can be bought, i.e. they got popular on social media through other means and are now using their popularity to sell products. In episode 8, we discuss whether or not influencer marketing will survive in its current form, if it’s fraudulent in its claims and how brands and influencers can ensure that they are moving the needle on culture.
