Death happens in medical settings for all kinds of reasons. However, when a death is unexpected, it can leave loved ones grieving and investigators wondering whether it was a case of medical misconduct, or medical murder. When investigators decide to bring a case to trial, they often rely on statistics to make their argument. The Royal Statistical Society released a report this year about such cases, which is the focus of this episode of stats and stories with guest William C. Thompson. William C. Thompson is Professor Emeritus of Criminology, Law, and Society; Psychology and Social Behavior at the UCI School of Social Ecology interested in human factors associated with forensic science evidence, including contextual and cognitive bias in forensic analysis and the communication of scientific findings to lawyers and juries. He has written about the strengths and limitations of various types of forensic science evidence, particularly DNA evidence, and about the ability of lay juries to evaluate evidence.

*The slight buzzing sound stops at 7:45 :) In a society where screens dominate children's lives, are we inadvertently taking away vital opportunities for their growth and development? Join us in this thought-provoking episode as we dive into a captivating conversation with renowned psychologist, Dr. Peter Gray, about the impact of screens on childhood, the decline of self-structured time, and the crucial role of play in education. From the very beginning, Dr. Gray highlights a profound observation - that the mental health decline in children may be a result of depriving them of what they truly need: free play, time away from adults, and the chance to solve their own problems. As he explains, when children are given the space and freedom to explore, they learn to navigate challenges, make decisions, and forge meaningful connections with peers. Our society's overprotective view of children, coupled with an overemphasis on adult involvement, has led to a decline in the natural balance that children seek. Dr. Gray cautions against blaming technology alone, emphasizing that societal factors play a significant role in limiting children's independence. Delving into the realm of education, Dr. Gray introduces the concept of self-directed learning, where children take the reins of their own education. He discusses the innate curiosity and thirst for knowledge that children possess, advocating for a learning approach that is driven by intrinsic motivation. Play emerges as a central theme throughout the conversation. Dr. Gray uncovers the multifaceted role of play in childhood, from skill acquisition to imagination and the development of social competence. He argues that the most critical human skill children acquire through play is the ability to get along with others. Join us as Dr. Gray explores the significance of self-control, impulse management, and focus that children develop through play. Prepare to be inspired by Dr. Gray's evidence-based insights, as he challenges common notions about children's education and encourages parents and society as a whole to embrace the power of play and provide children with opportunities for authentic learning experiences. Tune in to this captivating episode with Dr. Peter Gray and unlock the secrets to nurturing resilient, independent, and socially adept children in the digital age.

The eighteenth-century Bank of England was an institution that operated for the benefit of its shareholders--and yet came to be considered, as Adam Smith described it, "a great engine of state." In Virtuous Bankers: A Day in the Life of the Eighteenth-Century Bank of England (Princeton UP, 2023), Anne Murphy explores how this private organization became the guardian of the public credit upon which Britain's economic and geopolitical power was based. Drawing on the voluminous and detailed minute books of a Committee of Inspection that examined the Bank's workings in 1783-84, Murphy frames her account as "a day in the life" of the Bank of England, looking at a day's worth of banking activities that ranged from the issuing of bank notes to the management of public funds. Murphy discusses the bank as a domestic environment, a working environment, and a space to be protected against theft, fire, and revolt. She offers new insights into the skills of the Bank's clerks and the ways in which their work was organized, and she positions the Bank as part of the physical and cultural landscape of the City: an aggressive property developer, a vulnerable institution seeking to secure its buildings, and an enterprise necessarily accessible to the public. She considers the aesthetics of its headquarters--one of London's finest buildings--and the messages of creditworthiness embedded in that architecture and in the very visible actions of the Bank's clerks. Murphy's uniquely intimate account shows how the eighteenth-century Bank was able to deliver a set of services that were essential to the state and commanded the confidence of the public. Anne L. Murphy is Professor of History and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She joined the University of Portsmouth in March 2021. Prior to this she worked at the University of Hertfordshire and the University of Exeter.  Previously she spent twelve years working in the City trading interest rate and foreign exchange derivatives. Who is responsible for ensuring access to clean potable water? In an urbanizing planet beset by climate change, cities are facing increasingly arid conditions and a precarious water future. In Well Connected: Everyday Water Practices in Cairo (Johns Hopkins UP, 2023), anthropologist Tessa Farmer details how one community in Cairo, Egypt, has worked collaboratively to adapt the many systems required to facilitate clean water in their homes and neighborhoods. As a community that was originally not included in Cairo's municipal systems, the residents of Ezbet Khairallah built their own potable water and wastewater infrastructure. But when the city initiated a piped sewage removal system, local residents soon found themselves with little to no power over their own water supply or wastewater removal. Throughout this transition, residents worked together to collect water at the right times to drink, bathe, do laundry, cook, and clean homes. These everyday practices had deep implications for the health of community members, as they struggled to remain hydrated, rid their children of endemic intestinal worms, avoid consuming water contaminated with sewage, and mediate the impact of fluctuating water quality. Farmer examines how the people of Cairo interact with one another, with the government, and with social structures in order to navigate the water systems (and lack thereof) that affect their day-to-day lives. Farmer's extensive ethnographic fieldwork during the implementation of the Governorate of Cairo's septic system shines through in the compelling stories of community members. Well Connected taps into the inherent sociality of water through social contacts, moral ideology, interpersonal relationships, domestic rhythms, and the everyday labor of connecting. Tessa Farmer is Associate Professor at the University of Virginia in the Anthropology Department and the program in Global Studies, where she directs the Global Studies–Middle East & South Asia track within the Global Studies major. Ep. 81 (Part 1 of 2) | Constitutional law expert and criminal justice professor Mark Fischler has a thirst for justice and a gift for teaching. With cogency and passion, Mark explains that law is not the absolute that we perhaps thought, but an ever changing reflection of the values we hold as a society. Law is a developmental process, and will benefit from our own dedication to inner moral development. Mark shows how the law can (and has) become ever more inclusive, with the potential to serve and uphold the dignity of all peoples, all beings. Because of its abstract clauses, there is room in the Constitution to interpret the law in ways that are attuned with our pluralistic society. Mark calls on us to come together and decide what we value as a people—there is no mandate in democracy that all decision making power must reside in the hands of the Supreme Court, which has only had the sort of unilateral power it enjoys today since the 1950s.This is no dry, legalistic conversation, but a truly illuminating vision of the potential of the law to embody justice, inclusivity, compassion. It is also a solid overview of where we have come from and where we are now, referencing many landmark rulings of the Supreme Court. Finally, this is spiritually inspiring as well—Mark tells the story of the transformational epiphany he had as a young man that led to his career as a public defender, onto the spiritual path, and eventually to become a well-respected, award-winning professor of criminal justice. Mark's perspective on the law is far ranging, embracing human rights, animal rights, the rights of all beings. It comes from a place of deep care and compassion: “What is the happiness that the Declaration of Independence talks about, what is suffering?” Be inspired by Mark's wise and knowledgable teachings and the potential of the law to create a just society for all. This week the I am reading from Zofia Weaver's book 'OTHER REALITIES? The enigma of Franek Kluski's mediumship' and Kristi Pederson's book 'We Are Not Alone: My Extraterrestrial Contact'.Zofia WeaverFranek Kluski produced what might justifiably be described as the widest and most striking range of phenomena in the history of physical mediumship. A Pole whose professions included banking and journalism, his involvement with psychical research lasted for a brief period between 1918 and 1925. During that time he took part in meticulously documented séances devised and attended by eminent researchers. Much of the information about him has until now been available only in Polish, and today references to him in English tend to be restricted to the famous ‘Kluski hands', the paraffin wax moulds casts of which were intended to become the ultimate Permanent Paranormal Object. Theories as to how such moulds might have been produced continue to cause controversy, yet this was just one aspect of the phenomena surrounding this remarkable man. Based on original Polish sources, by painting a detailed portrait of the man in the context of his times this book aims to rectify the omission of Kluski from the gallery of important mediums.BioZofia Weaver, PhD, is a council member of the Society for Psychical Research in England. She is a former editor of the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research. She is coauthor, with the late Mary Rose Barrington and the late professor Ian Stevenson of A World in a Grain of Sand: The Clairvoyance of Stefan Ossowiecki. She is author of Other Realities? I was one of those people. Usually, the hidden pieces are those things we're not proud of or in which we fear judgment from others if exposed. In my case, it was both. After a 2010 declaration to part of my family that I would heal no matter what it looked like, my healing journey began by working with childhood wounds. As I worked through family issues, I found my self-confidence growing and my fears diminishing. Courage showed its face. I was giving myself permission to be me.One of my favorite Oscar Wilde quotes is, "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." This quote is humorous but profound, which makes it perfect. As I claimed myself step by step, I noticed less judgment from others and from myself towards others. Each year I uncovered a smidgeon more of who I was and who I wanted to be, but there always seemed to be a stopping point that, if revealed, would feel like I'd crossed the Rubicon or to the point of no return. I wasn't yet brave enough to go beyond that point.I was a closeted psychic medium most of my life but had been subjected to enough judgment from others when uncensored things would fly out of my mouth. I learned early to keep quiet. It took three years of working with alternative healers to finally claim that part of myself. I knew it was okay to be a psychic medium and that it was a gift I could share with others. I was making progress but still not brave enough to reveal my biggest secret – that I was a contactee, a person who had alien abduction experiences.Divulging this part of my life gave me pause. I watched the news and listened to reports about UFOs. The people who claimed to have seen a craft were always made to look absurd. For many years, I refused to set myself up to be ridiculed. However, there comes a time in many people's lives where it just doesn't matter anymore; you must give up and retreat into yourself or you must be brave and stand up for yourself. For me, that time is now. There is more than my reputation and integrity at stake. What is at stake is the healing of other people who have had similar experiences but have no place to go, no one to talk to, and no one who will understand what they've been through. I am that person. I am here to help and to understand. Dr. Jack Kasher extended a hand to help me more than two decades ago, and now it's time to pay it forward.BioKristi is the subject of a documentary titled We Are Not Alone which premiered January 2023. The documentary is based on her book We Are Not Alone…my extraterrestrial contact where she details her life as an ET experiencer from the age of five. She is a psychic medium and the author of four books: An Extraordinary Life, We Are Not Alone…my extraterrestrial contact, Between Earth and Heaven… a beginner's guide to living a spiritual life, and Messages from Ramadear…a collective hope for humanity. Alize Arıcan is a Society of Fellows Postdoctoral Scholar at Boston University, focusing on urban renewal, futurity, care, and migration.
