In this final episode of the season, I get to sit down with the one and only Vern Yip—yes, that Vern Yip! You probably know him from his trailblazing days on design television, but today he joins me to talk about his beautiful new book, Color, Pattern, Texture. We dive into everything from the deeply personal story of a scroll his mother carried while fleeing communist China, to how he uses those kinds of meaningful objects as the foundation for timeless design. Vern shares why starting with what matters most to you—not trends—creates homes that are layered, enduring, and uniquely yours. We look closely at some of the spaces from his book, break down why they work, and talk about the emotional side of design: how a room can tell your story, reflect who you are, and even help you step into who you want to become. In this episode, we tackle the intricate challenges that tariffs present for small to medium-sized businesses in the home decor sector. We critique the U.S. administration's pro-business stance, highlighting how current tariff policies—ranging from 20% to 35%—place a disproportionate burden on smaller companies. These tariffs lead to increased costs, reduced consumer spending, and hinder job creation in specialized artisan fields. We also discuss effective strategies for navigating these challenges, such as diversifying supply chains and investing in technology. Additionally, we advocate for greater understanding and support from policymakers to ensure the survival and growth of all businesses, not just large corporations.Join us as we explore these critical issues and seek solutions for a more equitable business landscape.Support the showThe best way not to miss an episode is to subscribe or follow us on your favorite podcast apps. In this episode, I talk with Natalie Papier about her new book, “Start With the Art”. Natalie explains why the art you choose—whether it's from a flea market, your kids, or a gallery—can and should be the starting point for designing a room. We discuss how art can shape color palettes, patterns, and materials, and why it tells the real story of a home. Have you ever walked through Target or Home Goods in the fall and felt the tug to load up your cart with pumpkins, cozy throws, and autumn-scented candles—only to get home and realize nothing really works together? You're not alone. One of the biggest mistakes women make when decorating for a new season is buying the latest home décor items before they know their design style. Without clarity, those seasonal finds end up feeling random, mismatched, and more like clutter than cozy. The truth is, no amount of fall pillows or faux pumpkins will make your home feel like you if you don't first know what your style actually is. In this episode, we're diving into: Why impulse-buying seasonal décor can lead to decision fatigue, overwhelm and regret The common pain points women face when they want a beautiful home but don't know where to start The shift that happens when your home finally reflects your unique style and feels warm, inviting, and cohesive year-round Friend, you deserve more than a house full of “stuff.” You deserve a home that looks and feels like you—a space you can't wait to come home to and are proud to invite others into. Looking back, my kitchen has gone through many lives. It started with painted cabinets and bamboo floors on a tight budget, then evolved through a moody green phase during COVID before finally landing on a navy-and-white look inspired by the sea. Along the way, we tiled to the ceiling, swapped in a gorgeous Bertazzoni stove, shiplapped the ceiling, and added furniture pieces to make it feel warm and lived-in rather than purely functional. Each change taught me something about color, materials, and the value of taking time to figure out what really works. With my renovation journey behind me, I sit down with Barbara Ballinger and Margaret Crane, authors of Kitchen Conversations, to talk about what really goes into creating a kitchen that works for you. We cover the basics like layout, storage, and lighting, and why planning for how you actually use the space matters more than following trends. Barbara and Margaret share practical tips on where to save, when to splurge, and how to avoid common renovation mistakes. We also discuss making design choices that last, adding personality to your kitchen, and how to approach the entire process without rushing it. Want to finally define your style? This week, I'm answering a listener question from Meg about how to balance style with function, especially when it comes to storage. She wants a home that looks good but also works for real life. I walk through different strategies depending on where you are in the process: whether you're starting from scratch, filling in gaps, or trying to upgrade over time. I also share my thoughts on when it makes sense to go with something quick and affordable like IKEA, and when to hold out for something more lasting. We discuss using placeholders, being honest about your priorities (speed, price, or quality—you can only choose two), and how to avoid clutter by utilizing storage solutions that also add character. I show a few examples from my own home, including how I use vintage crates, tins, and even sugar bowls to keep things both tidy and personal. This is the last episode of the season. We'll be back on August 18th. Also, early bird pricing for the retreat ends August 1st, so if you're thinking about joining me this fall, now's the time. All the details can be found here. Much has been covered about the what, why, and how we create but this episode is all about WHERE we do our creative work. In the wake of Lauren's big move back to NYC, she's been thinking a lot about transitioning from a dedicated art studio to a wall in her new bedroom. It's got the gals thinking about the benefits of having a home within your home (however small) JUST for being the best, most imaginative, creative you possible. They talk about the possibilities and limitations of making dedicated creative spaces and how they navigate arranging their own. In this episode of the Slow Style Home podcast, I talk with Elizabeth Rees, founder of Chasing Paper. We cover what makes her peel-and-stick wallpaper different, why it's not just for renters, and how it holds up over time. Elizabeth shares how she built a high-quality, sustainable product that's easy to use and doesn't feel temporary or trendy. We also get into how to choose the right pattern, scale, and colorway—plus how to make wallpaper work with artwork, furniture, and older homes that aren't perfectly straight. If you've ever been curious about wallpaper but felt overwhelmed or unsure where to start, this one's for you. Want to finally define your style? Saddle up, thrift lovers! On this week's Get Thrifty Podcast, we're lighting things up with Niki from Prickly Cactus Ranch. She's turning vintage finds into handmade candle magic, one cozy, sustainable burn at a time. Don't miss her secrets to secondhand sourcing and soulful upcycling! SHOW NOTES: How she began her upcycle business. Sustainable upcycling + creativity = big business. Full circle secondhand. What made her fall in love with secondhand sourcing. Her favorite vessel transformations—unexpected pieces that made perfect candles. Her commitment to using organic soy wax and eco-friendly practices. The challenge and beauty of making every candle unique—no mass production here! How she photographs, markets, and sells her creations. The magic of limited inventory: it builds excitement, encourages reuse, and lets your creativity shine. How she chooses scents to match the look and feel of each vessel (e.g., a smoky amber scent in a vintage whiskey glass).
In this episode, I talk with Joseph Marini, author of Mastering the Art of Entertaining. We cover what it really means to host, beyond the perfect table setting. Joseph shares why entertaining is about connection, not performance, and how a little planning goes a long way. We talk about what makes a good guest, how to keep people out of the kitchen, and why it's okay to serve store-bought food, as long as you put it in a real bowl. This is a practical, honest conversation about making people feel welcome in your home, no matter your style or budget. Want to finally define your style? Tom travels to Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, to visit friend and fellow reinvention expert Brian Balthazar — former HGTV executive, Today Show producer, stand-up comic, and co-host of Human vs. Hamster on Max. They talk about launching Kathie Lee & Hoda, Brian's unexpected pivot from TV exec to napkin entrepreneur, and how midlife “menopause” (for men) is real. This episode is full of unexpected career turns, heartfelt confessions, and the kind of laughs that come from two friends who have seen behind the curtain of fame... and lived to tell about it.
In this edition of the Fix My Room series, I spoke with Kayla, who lives on beautiful Vancouver Island in a post-and-beam home full of character and full of wide open spaces. Her main question was what to do with the big, undefined area between her staircase and the main living space. It's not a hallway, not quite a room, and right now it's mostly being used by her young kids as a runway! Together, we walked through the space and explored ideas for how to make it more functional and intentional, without blocking movement or creating clutter. Want to finally define your style? The break-up was rough, but looking around the house, the realization hit me: enough time had passed. The house felt hollow, the memories mere echoes as the walls finally exhaled. It was time for a new beginning. A new dawn that can only commence at the ultimate church of eclectic, spirited commerce: World Market. I started small—replacing our antique China with vivid Moroccan flatware that seemed kissed by the sun, swapping the boring coffee table with a teakwood piece who's carved inlays most assuredly had stories to tell. The sleek, curated house slowly gave way to joyous chaos and vibrant international hues: I bought handwoven baskets from Chile, glass incense holders from Bangkok, a wine decantor shaped like a pineapple that said, "Why am I shaped like a pineapple? Let me counter your inquiry with one of my own: why are you shaped like a human?" One night, while nestled snuggly on the Brazilian velvet sectional under the glow of a copper Turkish lantern, I laughed—genuinely, stupidly, fully—for the first time in months. Healing, it turns out, doesn't always mean moving on; sometimes it means turning your break-up into a credit card-fueld World Market fever dream.
