We (the Active Travel Adventures Community) are looking at a group of us booking the entire ship (24 guests maximum) for a week in July of 2027 to explore the northern Friesland region of the Netherlands.  I am still working out the details, but is should be under €2000 per person, double occupancy.  Note that we would sail in '27 NOT '26. When I interviewed my affiliate Boat Bike Tours top guide Tamara (Tammy) about her personal favorite European tour, she said hands down it was Friesland, in northern Holland: beautiful scenery, interesting culture and history and best of all, most people don't even know about it, so it's not over-touristed like so many cool destinations. I am now seeing what interest there is in reserving this boutique, comfy ship.   Even though the tour is offered self-guided, and you can certainly do this using the app and map, we want to bring Tammy and another guide along, because guides add so much color to our exploration.  They know the history and have great background stories, and they know the best places to see and stop, etc.   Like my recent ATA Portuguese Way Camino group, where we went "Solo/Together", this would be the same:  each day you can decide whether to ride with the group or self-guide, or even just sail with the ship and relax on board, or wander around town. José, talvez possamos começar um pouco falando do seu histórico e da sua trajetória pessoal. Pode nos contar sobre sua origem e o que você fazia antes de empreender? José:Claro. Eu nasci e cresci em uma cidade pequena da Colômbia chamada Cartagena. Hoje é turística e bastante conhecida, mas, quando eu crescia lá, era apenas um destino nacional, relativamente pequeno. Eu, inclusive, nasci em Barranquilla porque minha mãe era de lá — que é ainda menor.De Barranquilla vêm muitas coisas conhecidas: Shakira, a Avianca (nossa companhia aérea nacional), e as últimas duas empresas colombianas que abriram capital nos EUA também são de lá.É uma cidade muito empreendedora. Talvez um bom precedente para a Cobre, não é? Venho de uma família de imigrantes libaneses — extremamente trabalhadores e empreendedores. Cresci aprendendo, por osmose, o que significava ser um empresario. Homens e mulheres da minha família sempre fundaram e até hoje administram empresas. Era um ambiente muito natural para acabar trilhando o caminho que trilhei. Depois tive o privilégio de estudar na Universidade da Pensilvânia. Meu primo Felipe — hoje cofundador da Cobre — estudava lá um ano antes de mim. Eu nunca achei que conseguiria entrar, mas consegui, e fui para a Penn cursar a graduação. No meu primeiro ano, li um business case sobre a M-Pesa, considerada precursora do dinheiro móvel — e, por consequência, de boa parte do que chamamos hoje de fintech: Zelle, Venmo, Paytm, GCash…A ideia original surgiu da M-Pesa, um serviço criado pela Vodafone que permitia às pessoas enviar dinheiro via SMS. Hoje, algo como 20% do PIB do Quênia transita pela M-Pesa. É completamente ubíquo. Inspirado nisso, tentei várias vezes criar algo parecido na Colômbia durante meus verões na Penn, mas obviamente falhei — afinal, eu não era uma empresa de telecomunicações. Ainda assim, essa experiência me mostrou como uma infraestrutura de pagamentos em tempo real poderia transformar a vida de milhões de pessoas e empresas. Ao me formar, voltei para a Colômbia para tentar de novo. E falhei mais uma vez. Foi aí que percebi: “o problema sou eu, preciso aprender a construir empresas de verdade”. Então fui trabalhar na McKinsey em Nova York. Passei um ano e meio lá e tive como cliente uma das maiores gestoras de venture capital do mundo. Eu era apenas analista júnior na equipe, mas aprendi muito sobre como os VCs pensam. Isso me levou a largar o emprego em Nova York e me mudar para a Cidade do México, para trabalhar na Oyo Rooms, um dos grandes unicórnios da Índia. A ideia era aprender mais sobre startups de hiperescala do que eu aprenderia ficando na consultoria. Fiquei um ano e meio na Oyo — até a pandemia começar. Com a COVID, percebi: “este é o momento certo para digitalizar pagamentos na Colômbia”. As empresas estavam forçadas a mudar. E foi quando decidi voltar a Bogotá, em junho de 2020, para tentar mais uma vez. E agora, cá estamos. Florian:Muito interessante. Não sabia de todas essas tentativas que não deram certo antes.Aliás, eu também estudei na Penn, me formei em 2010. Você foi alguns anos depois, certo? José:Sim, me formei em 2018. E naquela época, o ambiente ainda era mais voltado para carreiras tradicionais. A maioria queria ir para consultoria, bancos de investimento ou fundos. Eu era um dos poucos insistindo em empreender já na graduação. Participei até de competições de startups do MBA, porque não havia para undergrad. Episode #384: “As a journalist, you always hope for consequences. I mean, otherwise our reporting is meaningless,” says Bjørn Nordahl, a Norwegian investigative reporter who led a two-year probe into Telenor's withdrawal from Myanmar. The case was especially painful because the company, once praised for driving SIM card prices down and sparking a communication revolution in 2014, ended up entangled with a brutal military regime. After the February 2021 coup, Telenor initially disclosed military orders to shut down networks and block Facebook. But on February 14 its CEO told Norwegian media, “From now on, I can't say anything” about Myanmar. From that point until March 2022, the company ceased public disclosures while complying with junta demands. Nordahl's team examined over 750 leaked documents. These showed two categories of orders: shutdown directives and direct requests for subscriber information. One June 2021 internal assessment warned that handing over data on a PDF member meant “the impact of sharing this information is extremely high” and could enable arrests. Another request concerned a doctor close to Aung San Suu Kyi; Telenor concluded “it's likely that this number will be used to support the military examinations of the criminal case against Aung San Suu Kyi.” Nordahl notes Telenor admitted, when asked, that “we never said no” to junta requests, with lawyers justifying every handover under Myanmar's military law, while “Norwegian legislation does not come into consideration.” At home, questions arose about oversight. Around 30 meetings took place between Telenor and Norway's Ministry of Trade and Commerce, though their content remains undisclosed. Nordahl highlighted that the Labor Party was in power during both entry and exit, adding, “probably there will be people in the opposition who are very interested in this story.” He said opposition groups already call for an independent investigation, and predicted, “this claim will be even stronger and probably reach another level after we have published this.” For Nordahl, the saga illustrates the limits of corporate responsibility under authoritarianism. Many of you are familiar with the disappearance of Gerry Largay, trail name Inchworm.   In 2013, Gerry went missing near Stratton Maine on her thru hike of the Appalachian Trail.  After Maine's most extensive search in their history, she was not found.  In fact, it wasn't until more than two years later that a surveyor found her remains.  So while you may be familiar with the story as it made international news, you probably don't know that Gerry was my friend and hiking buddy.   Gerry stepped off the trail to go to the bathroom, and then got disoriented.  Once she found herself lost in the woods, she didn't know what to do.  Today, if you'll spare me a few minutes, I'll teach you what you are supposed to do if YOU get lost in the woods.  This episode is in honor of my friend, Geradine Largay. Kasimir Burgess' Iron Winter, a documentary that takes the viewer into a land rarely seen — that of the nomadic Mongolian horse herders. An immersive and intimate piece of cinema which invites people to see a dying ancient tradition undertaken on the Mongolian Steppes during a five month journey herding horses to viable snow covered pastures. Transcendentally lensed by Benjamin Bryan Iron Winter is almost elegiac. The ravages of the climate crisis are making extreme conditions significantly more brutal and two young herders have to come to terms not only with the elements but also their futures.Romería by Carla Simón translates to Pilgramage in English. An autobiographical fiction about Simón's parents and the quest for an orphaned 18 year old woman to find remnants and memories about her father and his family in Vigo, Galicia. Simón's avatar Marina (Llúcia Garcia) needs documentation for a university scholarship to study film in 2004, but whether she can convince her father's patrician and evasive parents to accept her as Fon's daughter is complicated by the way he died and their shame.With her mother's diary from 1984 through to 1986 guiding her she imagines their lives as young lovers, but it is a bittersweet imagining as Fon's family obfuscate truths and misremember because his life has been erased. Again, a film that is spectacularly lensed by Hélène Louvart capturing Vigo and its islands. Will Marina be claimed or rejected? Will she find vestiges of her parents? ALEJANDRO GRAJAL  Alejandro has lived and breathed the amazing natural ecosystems that make up our beloved planet. He is also an accomplished  and prolific author that currently leads Woodland Park Zoo, one of the largest zoos in America with a legacy of 126 years and one of the most important cultural and most visited institutions in Seattle.  He is internationally known for his vision to define a new relationship between humans and nature by helping to restore the deep, affective bond between people and animals. He advocates for zoos as the best community institutions to create a social movement for conservation, to foster science learning beyond the classroom, and to ensure that all people have access to nature, regardless of socioeconomic background. Before joining the zoo, Alejandro served as senior vice president for conservation, education and training at the Chicago Zoological Society/Brookfield Zoo, where he headed the Center for Conservation Leadership, oversaw field conservation and research programs for the Center for the Science of Animal Welfare, and supervised education programs. Previously, he had served as executive director of international programs for the National Audubon Society and director of Latin American programs at the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York. A noted author, Alejandro's publications include 45 peer-reviewed books, chapters, and scientific and popular articles covering topics which span the psychology of conservation, measuring the impact of environmental education, the sustainable use of natural resources and ornithology, among others. He leads the Climate Literacy Zoo Education Network (CliZEN), a coalition of zoological institutions, universities and NGOs.  In 2016, Trustees of the Chicago Zoological Society awarded him the prestigious George B. Raab Medal for Conservation Leadership, recognizing his lifelong contributions to environmental and species protection, and inspiring future generations of scientists and leaders to tackle big questions about living harmoniously with all beings on the planet.  In his spare time, he is an accomplished wildlife artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries in major cities. He currently serves on the boards of Wild Welfare, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and World Trade Center Seattle. Alejandro earned his undergraduate degree in ecology from Simón Bolívar University in Caracas, Venezuela and his PhD in zoology from the University of Florida. Enquanto ainda refletimos sobre as nuances da vida debaixo do Sol, compreendendo que o dia mau é uma realidade e de que a esperança está em descansar no Senhor, o sábio nos conduz por um caminho de ainda mais de difícil compreensão, até mesmo intragável da perspectiva humana: “há justos que perecem em sua justiça, e há ímpios que prolongam seus dias na terra”. (Ec 7.15). É natural que, quando deparados com tal afirmação, venhamos a impetuosamente pensar sobre o que há de errado com o mundo e como isso é injusto. No entanto, novamente a verdade das escrituras nos constrange e a consideração feita pelo pensador é de que o justo que sofre não é tão inocente assim, visto que “não há nenhum justo sobre a terra que faça o bem e que não peque”. (Ec. 7.20). Ainda que regenerados em Cristo, estamos inseridos na realidade do mundo atual, com anomalias resultantes do pecado emergente da queda do homem, que a vida permanece sujeita à vaidade. O pregador nos lembra que não estamos imunes as perversidades e acidentes da vida terrena e que nós mesmos, muitas vezes, somos perversos, acusando outros de ações que já cometemos. Sim, o mundo tem algo de errado, ele é caótico, conflituoso e mau. Nós somos os causadores disso. De que maneira então podemos caminhar nessa realidade vil? Often described as "the gold standard" for fiscal conservatism in Congress, the National Taxpayers Union rated him the best vote for taxpayers in the House four times, most recently in 2020.
