For decades, psychedelics were associated primarily with youth culture, countercultural movements, and experimental exploration. Today, however, a growing number of older adults are revisiting—or discovering for the first time—the potential of psychedelics as tools for healing, personal growth, meaning-making, and emotional well-being.In this episode, Dr. Jeff Armstrong speaks with journalist and author Abbie Rosner, one of the few writers dedicated to exploring the intersection of psychedelics and aging. Her forthcoming book, Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging, examines how baby boomers and older adults are challenging traditional narratives of aging through intentional psychedelic use and how these experiences may influence mental health, purpose, spirituality, and quality of life in later years.Drawing from years of reporting for major publications and conversations with older adults exploring psychedelics and cannabis, Abbie discusses why interest in psychedelics is growing among older populations, what the current research suggests, and the ethical, practical, and emotional questions that accompany this emerging movement. Together, they explore whether aging can be viewed not as a period of inevitable decline, but as a season of continued growth, exploration, wisdom, and transformation.Learn more at https://www.abbierosner.com/BUY Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging at https://www.innertraditions.com/search/Abbie+RosnerFind help at https://healingadvocacyfund.org/ andhttps://www.spiritpharmacist.com/Please, support The Aging Well Podcast by hitting the ‘like' button, subscribing/following the podcast, sharing with a friend, and….Tip Jar! It's often argued that culture is the gateway to politics — that if you can influence cultural values, it will ultimately change society as whole. In the late Sixties, the counterculture was animated by that idea, including Rolling Stone Magazine, which began in the Bay Area. Peter Richardson reflects on Rolling Stone's debt to the counterculture – and the limits to both endeavors. In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, host Stewart Alsop sits down with Violeta Bulc, former European Commissioner for Transport and coordinator of the book Leadership Challenged, featuring 24 authors from around the world. They explore the dangers of transhumanism, the misuse of artificial intelligence, and how Silicon Valley has lost its authority to lead on technology ethics. Drawing from her background as a computer engineer who worked in Silicon Valley, Bulc argues for creating global AI infrastructure with democratically agreed-upon standards—similar to how the early Internet was built. The conversation covers the manipulation of public consciousness, the importance of middle-class agency in social change, and why humanity needs to reclaim ownership of its collective knowledge before private enterprises consolidate total control. Bulc's book is available for free download at ecocivilization.earth.Timestamps00:00 Stewart introduces Violeta Bulc and her book Leadership Challenged, coordinated with 24 global authors discussing humanity's chance through better leadership approaches.05:00 Violeta explains her technology background and critiques artificial intelligence naming, arguing these are powerful data-processing tools without true intelligence, emphasizing unknown ethical standards embedded in AI systems.10:00 Discussion of transhumanism as investment buzzword serving elite agendas, comparing to previous Silicon Valley bubble while emphasizing humanity's unexplored relational, spiritual and energetic dimensions beyond industrial development.15:00 Stewart discusses mainstream culture's fragmentation since 2008, Silicon Valley's dystopian vision, and personal strategies for reducing dependency on AI tools through diversification and stepping back from reliance.20:00 Violeta explains historical civilization patterns and middle class destruction, expressing hope that emerging thoughts worldwide will eventually converge to shift current power dynamics and technological obsessions.25:00 Technology as tool versus misuse, emphasizing builders' responsibility and ethical frameworks needed, comparing AI regulation needs to automotive safety standards that weren't implemented early enough.30:00 Edward Bernays discussion revealing manipulation through public relations and psychological operations, leading to modern sock puppet armies used by nation states for narrative control online.35:00 Internet described as most democratic technological tool ever built, maintained by responsible groups preserving equality and inclusion principles through decentralized infrastructure and IP address accessibility.40:00 Proposal for global AI infrastructure with agreed rules treating applications as interfaces, questioning private enterprise ownership of humanity-generated data and advocating collective management with usage fees.45:00 Technology evolution patterns from mainframes to personal computing back to centralized cloud computing, emphasizing need to prevent domination while preserving entrepreneurship and collective decision rights.50:00 Quantum physics principles applied to human connection and responsibility, discussing EU ethical committees reviewing AI projects post-approval, emphasizing caring hearts over short-term quarterly corporate thinking.55:00 Violeta shares company transformation experiences moving away from competition models toward serving genuine market needs, concluding with book availability at ecocivilization.earth for free download.Key Insights1. Violeta Bulc argues that artificial intelligence is fundamentally misnamed because there is no actual intelligence within these systems. They are powerful computational tools capable of processing massive amounts of data and identifying patterns, but they lack genuine intelligence. What concerns her most is that this technology has owners with embedded interests and unknown ethical standards, yet society increasingly wants to build everything on these applications and even allow them to make decisions for us. She emphasizes that as someone with decades of experience in high-tech engineering, including work in Silicon Valley, she understands the architecture behind these systems and believes we must recognize them as tools rather than intelligent entities.2. During her time as European Commissioner, Bulc helped write the first European strategy on artificial intelligence, which included three critical elements she was proud of. First, there must always be a red button to switch off any application or technology when it causes harm. Second, there must be a responsible person behind every app who can be held accountable for its consequences. Third, there should be an ethical committee evaluating powerful applications to understand their potential consequences. Though these principles have been somewhat diluted over time, they represent an important framework for responsible technology development that prioritizes human oversight and accountability.3. Bulc observes that throughout human history, great civilizations have risen across all continents, not just in Europe or the Americas, and most brought themselves down through decadence, self-centeredness, and arrogance before being finished off by external forces. She believes Western civilization is currently at this point, having become accustomed to obtaining resources through force and authority while constantly readjusting moral standards to serve elite interests. The industrial revolution initially improved conditions for people because industry needed workers, which led to the emergence of a powerful middle class. However, the elite recognized that the middle class was the only segment of society truly interested in change, so they systematically worked to destroy it over the past twenty to thirty years.4. The Internet represents the most progressive democratic tool ever built in human society, according to Bulc. Its fundamental architecture, based on TCP IP protocol and packet switching, was designed to be non-hierarchical, allowing any computer with an IP address to be seen on the same level as powerful global corporations. The maintenance of Internet tables remains in the hands of people with high levels of awareness and responsibility who are faithful to its initial democratic mission. She had hoped this technology would bring the world together as the closest tool humanity has invented to support equality and inclusion, and despite the problems with applications built on top of it, the underlying infrastructure still maintains these democratic principles.5. Bulc proposes creating a global AI infrastructure with globally agreed rules and standards, similar to how the Internet functions. She argues that many AI tools currently claim ownership of humanity's knowledge, wisdom, and heritage without permission, manipulating data that rightfully belongs to all of humanity. Instead of allowing private enterprises to capture this data first and then charge people to access it, she envisions putting all of humanity's data into a commonly managed infrastructure with clear rules about who can use it, under what conditions, and with fees paid back to humanity. This approach would challenge the current fragmented network of privately owned data centers and restore collective ownership of human knowledge.6. The transhumanism movement represents an obsession rather than a thoughtful application of technology, in Bulc's view. She distinguishes between using transhumanism as a tool for exploring the universe under extreme conditions where humans cannot survive versus implementing it on Earth as a replacement for humanity. The fundamental problem is that the human characters building these machines and applications have questionable ethical models, and they will not allow the rest of humanity to coexist peacefully on the planet. She advocates for transhumanism to be used for space exploration while preserving Earth for humans who want to live as relational, spiritual, and social beings connected to the natural ecosystem.7. Bulc emphasizes that we must move beyond the competition model and think carefully about the consequences of our actions because humanity is too connected and interdependent to simply do things because we can. She applies three basic laws of quantum physics to everyday life: we are all connected and influence each other, the same ideas can emerge simultaneously around the world through entanglement, and the observer always makes a difference in any situation. The current rush to develop technology without pausing to assess consequences is a deliberate tool to prevent thinking, driven by fear of competition. However, her fourteen years of experience helping companies recover from financial trouble demonstrated that moving away from competition models and focusing on genuinely serving market needs creates sustainable, prominent players who work together with customers and local communities.

John Kapusta's Self-Realization Nation: How Artists of the Creative Counterculture Made a New America (U California Press, 2026) is the story of an unexpected group of performing artists who led one of the most influential artistic movements in contemporary American history. After World War II, personal fulfillment emerged as a defining American cultural ideal. Self-realization--the quest to become our authentic selves--remains a powerful part of American culture and arts today. In Self-Realization Nation, John Kapusta provides a lively cultural history of how an overlooked movement of musicians, dancers, and actors championed the ideal of self-realization. These performers, who spanned many backgrounds, identities, genres, and artistic styles, became what he calls the creative counterculture. Artists as varied as Sonny Rollins, John Cage, Anna Halprin, Alice and John Coltrane, and Pauline Oliveros shared an approach to creativity focused on letting go of limiting beliefs and subverting oppressive social norms. Through colorful vignettes, Kapusta reveals how these artists made their art and how their approach spread beyond the performing arts to influence such fields as psychology, education, and wellness. Ultimately, these creative counterculturists came to define a new vision of an America where everyone was free to be themselves, together. Learn more about your ad choices. Save San Francisco's Soul: Jonathan Weber on Technology and Politics in the City By the Bay

Keen On Democracy

“The same creative and political forces that gave rise to [San Francisco's] boom nearly engineered its collapse.” — Jonathan Weber In Hitchcock's Vertigo, the quintessential San Francisco movie, the villain points to an old painting of the city and tells Jimmy Stewart that San Francisco has changed. The real city has been lost, he says. Somebody has stolen San Francisco's soul. The veteran tech journalist Jonathan Weber is the latest writer to search for that soul. In City on the Edge: Technology, Politics, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco, Weber bemoans the disappearance of the real San Francisco — the city not just of the Beats and the Counterculture but also of ordinary teachers and policemen. We've had thirty years of boom, bust, and Big Tech. The ordinary folks of San Francisco have been replaced by a new class of tech bros. In 1992, just 2% of San Franciscans worked in tech. By 2019 it was 35%. As a longtime San Franciscan, Weber had a front-row seat on the dot-com mania, the rise of social media, Uber and Airbnb, the pandemic's great emptying of downtown, and now the AI boom driven by the San Francisco-based Anthropic and OpenAI. In City on the Edge, Weber argues that the same creative and political forces that gave rise to the boom — the counterculture's anarchic spirit, the city's love affair with eccentricity, the tech industry's utopian self-belief — also engineered its near-collapse. Digital vertigo, so to speak. Once again somebody has stolen San Francisco's soul. Five Takeaways •       From 2% to 35%: The Numbers Behind the Transformation: In 1992, just 2% of San Francisco workers were in tech. By 2019 it was 35%. The book traces how this happened: a city economically troubled in the early 1990s, still reeling from AIDS and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, with its manufacturing base gone and its corporate headquarters thinning out. Into this vacuum came a group of free-thinking technologists immersed in the city's creative counterculture. They invented the contemporary internet. What followed was one of the most rapid urban transformations in American history. •       The Cacophony Society and the Founding of Burning Man: Before the tech boom, San Francisco in the early 1990s had a remarkable underground culture. Weber writes about the Cacophony Society — the group of anarchic free spirits who effectively founded the Burning Man festival. The Cacophony Society emerged from the counterculture of the 1960s through various evolutions — Situationist pranks, urban exploration, radical creativity. Burning Man began as their annual trip to the Black Rock Desert. The spirit of that founding: go somewhere, build something, be someone different, leave no trace. That spirit was the soul of the city too. •       The City of Nostalgia: Always Believing Yesterday Was Better: Weber takes his Vertigo reference seriously. San Francisco is structurally a city of nostalgia — people arrive with a fixed idea of what the city is, and it inevitably becomes something different. The gap between the idea and the reality generates permanent mourning. This is not unique to San Francisco — Trump has built a presidency on the idea that things were better in the 1950s — but it is intensified here by the height of the hopes people bring. The city means something bigger than itself. That is both its greatest asset and its permanent wound. •       The AI Boom and the Coming IPO Earthquake: The current AI boom is, in Weber's reading, likely to be the largest yet. OpenAI and Anthropic are both based in the city. When those IPOs happen, San Francisco real estate — already rising 25–50% in some neighbourhoods, Andrew notes — will go, in Weber's words, “really, really crazy again.” Hundreds of thousands of millionaires will be created overnight. The city is gradually becoming uniformly wealthy. Some of the old tensions may be less intense for that reason. But Weber does not think the cycles are over. The current boom will bust, as all booms do. What comes next is the question. •       Burning Man, the Internet, and the Future of Cities: Weber ends the book at Burning Man. His closing observation: when the internet arrived on the playa, Burning Man lost the sense that it was a separate world — a place where you could be a different person, because nothing from your regular life could reach you. Now everyone has a phone. The privacy is gone. The sense of separation is gone. For cities: part of the power of cities is that they bring people together, and good things arise from that friction. But if technology no longer requires you to be in the same place, cities become less essential. What is the future of the city in the age of technology? Weber doesn't have a tidy answer. Neither does anyone else. About the Guest Jonathan Weber is a veteran technology journalist and the author of City on the Edge: Technology, Politics, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco (Atria Books, June 9, 2026). He was the founding editor-in-chief of The Industry Standard, former editor-in-chief of the San Francisco Standard, and covered the technology industry for the Los Angeles Times. He lives in San Francisco. References: •       City on the Edge: Technology, Politics, and the Fight for the Soul of San Francisco by Jonathan Weber (Atria Books, June 9, 2026). •       David Talbot, Season of the Witch: Enchantment, Terror, and Deliverance in the City of Love — referenced in the conversation; Weber's recommended companion read on 1970s San Francisco. •       Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson, Abundance — referenced in the closing exchange. •       Joan Didion, Slouching Towards Bethlehem — the opening epigraph to Weber's book, referenced in the conversation. •       Alfred Hitchcock, Vertigo (1958) — Andrew's reference; the film's own meditation on San Francisco as a city of nostalgia. About Keen On America Nobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. In Keen On America, Andrew brings his pointed Transatlantic wit to making sense of the United States — hosting daily interviews about the history and future of this now venerable Republic. With nearly 2,900 episodes since the show launched on TechCrunch in 2010, Keen On America is the most prolific intellectual interview show in the history of podcasting. WebsiteSubstack

In this message, Pastor Marco talks about how we are becoming a church who is living counter culture. Taking from Paul's words in Romans 12, living counter culture begins with surrender, is maintained by resisting conformity and is carried out by renewing the mind. Followers of Jesus are called to resist the pressure of the world and live distinctly transformed lives for the glory of God — no matter the cost.

Always On Time" I. Introduction: Defining "On Time" Human vs. Divine Timeline: We all view time differently (e.g., being hours early like Pastor Rhonda's father, pulling in at the last exact minute, or having a "when I get there, I get there" attitude). The Mismatched Watch: Pastor Rhonda shares a story of her father getting anxious about being late, only to realize his watch was still set to a different time zone. We often get aggravated or anxious with God simply because we are looking at our own clock instead of His. Core Truth: God does not operate on our timeline or synchronize His eternal watch with ours. His delays are deliberate, purposeful, and designed to bring Him glory. II. Point 1: The Danger of Rushing God The only thing worse than waiting on God is wishing you had waited on Him. Scriptural Warnings of Impatience: King Saul: Took matters into his own hands and offered an unauthorized sacrifice because his men were scattering and the prophet Samuel was delayed. As a result, the kingdom was torn from him. Abraham and Sarah: Attempted to force God's promise of a child by involving Hagar, resulting in the birth of Ishmael and generational warfare. The Counter-Culture of God's Delays: Even when humanity makes mistakes or tries to rush the process, God is powerful enough to rewrite the story (e.g., the massive revivals occurring today among the descendants of Ishmael in places like Iran). III. Point 2: The Nature of the Waiting Room What is "Waiting"?: In Isaiah 43, the Hebrew word for waiting (qavah) means to be tightly woven together like cords. The Principle: True waiting means binding your heart to the Lord, not to the outcome or the specific thing you are asking for. The Reality of Turbulence: Life brings unexpected turbulence, much like a bumpy flight 30,000 feet in the air. When God chooses not to immediately stop the turbulence, He provides the necessary grace to walk through it. God's Arrangement: In Ecclesiastes, "beautiful in its time" translates from a root meaning arranged, precise, orderly, and fitting. God is intricately preparing the circumstances to display His glory perfectly. IV. Point 3: He Reaches Down and Lifts Us Up An Eyewitness to Deliverance: Our survival through past trials isn't luck, coincidence, or superstition—it is a direct testimony of God doing what only He can do. The Ultimate "Reach": God bridges the massive gap between His absolute holiness and our deep hopelessness. Calvary was the ultimate extension of God reaching down to humanity. Deep Waters: Deep waters represent situations heavier and stronger than we are—depression, grief, financial crisis, or broken relationships. Even David, the mighty warrior who killed Goliath, had to admit when an enemy was too strong for him. The Parent Metaphor: Just as a parent jumps fully clothed into a pool to rescue a drowning child without a second thought, God moves urgently into our deep waters to rescue us and place us in a "spacious place" of freedom. V. Point 4: Walking Through the Fire The Purpose of the Furnace: Fiery trials are not strange occurrences; they are vehicles to burn off the "fake" attributes (like pride or addiction) and solidify genuine, veteran faith. Identity in the Fire: When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the furnace, the Babylonian king tried to change their identities by renaming them. However, Christ walked into the fire with them, burning away only their bindings. The Hebrew Meanings of the Three Hebrews: Hananiah (Shadrach): "Yahweh has been gracious." Mishael (Meshach): "Who is like our God?" Azariah (Abednego): "Yahweh has helped." The Fire's Expiration Date: Every trial has a limit. The world cannot alter your identity as a son or daughter of God, and you will come out of the fire not even smelling like smoke. VI. Conclusion: God Rescues Because He Delights in You Relentless Delight: God doesn't love or rescue us out of obligation or because we performed perfectly this week. He is overwhelmed with delight for His children because of Jesus Christ. The Final Declaration: God is worth waiting for. From Joseph to Esther, to the arrival of Jesus in the fullness of time, He has proven that He is an all-time God who cannot fail. Scripture Index Here are the key verses read, cited, or closely paraphrased throughout the service: Psalm 18:1-3 > "I will love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised..." Psalm 126:1-5 > "When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like those that dreamed. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing... They that sow in tears shall reap in joy." 1 Samuel 13 (Referenced) – The account of King Saul prematurely offering the sacrifice and Samuel declaring the kingdom torn away. Genesis 16 (Referenced) – Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, and the birth of Ishmael. Isaiah 40:31 (Referenced) – Waiting (qavah) on the Lord to renew strength and mount up with wings like eagles. Ecclesiastes 3:11 > "He has made everything beautiful in its time." Romans 8:38-39 (Paraphrased) – The conviction that no principalities, powers, height, or depth can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Isaiah 43:1-3 > "...Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior."   1 Peter 4:12 > "Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you."   1 Peter 1:6-7 (Paraphrased) – Gold perishes, but a refined faith brings praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Daniel 3 (Referenced) – Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace with the fourth man who looked like the Son of God. Numbers 6:24-26 (The Benediction) > "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace." In this episode, Dr. Rob Assibey and Dr. Cynthia Chen-Joea are joined by Family Medicine Revolution legends Dr. Jay W. Lee and Dr. Rachel Friedman. Dr. Friedman was one of two Santa Rosa family medicine residents (along with Dr. Nicole Mohlman) who were fed up with the academic establishment's attitude toward family medicine, and began to draw up plans to make family medicine a force in healthcare. From the Family Medicine T-shirt Revolution, to the social media storm that Dr. Lee championed with #FMRevolution, you'll hear the legends themselves talk about the origin story of this incredible movement and why it's important to carry, and pass on, that torch! Guests: Jay W. Lee, MD, MPH is a family physician leader and public health advocate who co-founded the FMRevolution hashtag – a grassroots movement reclaiming the power, purpose, and future of Family Medicine. He is a passionate voice for primary care justice, physician workforce renewal, and training the next generation to lead boldly, speak truth, and rebuild a health system rooted in relationships, equity, and community. Rachel Friedman, MD is a family physician in Santa Rosa and sees herself as a "whole person-ologist"-- a specialist not just in one particular organ system, but in the way all of the elements in a person's body, mind, heredity, and environment interact to create health/disease. She moved to Santa Rosa in 2008 to complete family medicine residency, with an additional fellowship in Integrative Medicine, and fell in love with this area. In 2012, she joined KP Santa Rosa as both a full-scope family physician and founding faculty of a new KP family medicine residency. She recently became Program Director of the training program, a leadership role that allows her to continue seeing patients and teaching, while pursuing her passions for whole person, patient-centered healthcare, equity/inclusion, and healthcare transformation/innovation. Drawing from his new book, A Short, Strange Trip, John examines the infamous 1971 La Chorrera experiment in the Amazon and the ideas that helped shape today's growing fascination with psychedelics, plant medicine, and altered states of consciousness. The conversation moves beyond politics and headlines into deeper questions about healing, spirituality, identity, and the human search for truth. John also shares the personal story that inspired his investigation, including his father's struggle with alcoholism and attempts at psychedelic-assisted therapy. Together, Lucas and John explore how hallucinogens evolved from counterculture taboo into a mainstream wellness movement backed by clinical research, venture capital, and legislative reform, while asking an important question: when does subjective experience become accepted as truth? This is a thought-provoking conversation about belief, healing, consciousness, and the growing intersection between spirituality, psychology, and modern culture. The Baby Boom generation pioneered the counterculture movement of the 1960s so it's not so surprising that 50 years later they are using compounds like psilocybin and LSD with the goal to improve their overall quality of life. Today, we get into all of the above with Abbie Rosner, the author of the forthcoming book “Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging.” She researches and writes about how her generation of Baby Boomers is exploring the drugs of their youth to enhance their experience of aging. In "Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging," she suggests that the growing underground movement of older adults using psychedelics is helping rewrite the narrative around aging —as a time of healing, growth, spiritual deepening, joyous intimacy, supportive community, and acceptance of the inevitability of death. Abbie is a freelance journalist, writer, and public speaker based out of Washington, D.C., and she has written extensively on older adults, cannabis, and psychedelics for Forbes, Double Blind, and other journals since 2018. Her new book comes out in July 2026. ◘ Related Links Abbie Rosner's website https://www.abbierosner.com/ Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research https://www.hopkinspsychedelic.org/ NYU Langone Health's Center for Psychedelic Medicine https://bit.ly/4dvwAG6 UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics https://psychedelics.berkeley.edu/ GW Integrative Medicine Podcast Medical Cannabis, Psilocybin, & More Playlist https://bit.ly/3RO8q0Z ◘ Transcript bit.ly/3JoA2mz ◘ Disclaimer: The content and information shared in GW Integrative Medicine is for educational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice. Ever thought the so-called ‘golden decade' of the 1960s was only about peace and love? Think again. Beneath the surface, it was riddled with violence, paranoia, and chaos, even in its most iconic moments.   So says James Riley, a writer whose work explores the darker edges of late-1960s and 1970s counterculture. His 'The Bad Trip' is an acclaimed study of apocalypse, occultism, paranoia and the collapse of the hippie dream at the end of the 1960s.   We examine the romanticised narrative of peace, love, and idealism, revealing how beneath the surface lurked a shadow of violence, paranoia, and societal fractures. How figures like Charles Manson emerged not as aberrations, but as products and archetypes of the era.    We talk Jung, LSD, The Trickster archetype, Manson, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, the committee for The Summer of Love, to see how the darkness beneath the light reveals more about human nature than the utopian stories we often tell, and how it was the inspiration for some truly great art.   For the list of countercultural films we discuss - and more - go HERE    ---   If you can contribute to this crazy endeavour, join our Patreon HERE   Thank you to everyone who's signed up to support the show —that means a lot. Segment 4 • First-century Rome treated women like second-class citizens — so why were Peter's commands to husbands considered shocking? • Todd argues Christians are fighting the culture war the wrong way — and offers a far more radical alternative. • What if honoring bad leaders, difficult spouses, and harsh authorities is actually the church's greatest countercultural weapon? ___ Thanks for listening! There have been bad actors, casualties, the needle and the damage done -  and in this episode, we dive into the world of revolutionary and political violence, exploring how radical groups emerged from countercultural movements and evolved into what my guest Jason Burke describes as Revolutionists     Jason is an award-winning British author and journalist, currently serving as the International Security Correspondent for The Guardian. He is widely regarded as one of the preeminent experts on modern radicalisation terrorism, and global security, reporting from hotspots around the world.     His latest book,The Revolutionists: The Story of the Extremists Who Hijacked the 1970s, is a sweeping history of the  period  1968–1979, a decade defined by a global explosion of secular, leftist political violence.      The Revolutionists were the orphans of the 1960s, young people who grew up in the shadow of the 1950s' existential vacuum of consumerism and the 1960s' idealistic overload. When the student protests of 1968 failed to topple the global order, a radicalised minority concluded that the "System" was too resilient for peaceful protest.     It's an incredible story - and connects the counterculture with events taking place in the Middle East right now.   ---   If you'd like to get involved and contribute to this crazy endeavour, join our Patreon HERE   Thank you to everyone who's signed up to support the show —that really does mean a lot. In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, host Stewart Alsop sits down with Cindy Cohn, Executive Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), for a wide-ranging conversation covering the EFF's origins and mission, the countercultural roots of Silicon Valley, the rise of surveillance-based business models, the challenges facing open source software and open-weight AI models, the legal landscape around intellectual property and privacy law, and the growing tension between government overreach and civil liberties in the digital age. Cindy also discusses her upcoming departure from EFF after 26 years, the transition to new leadership, and her recently published book Privacy's Defender, which chronicles key legal battles she fought to protect digital privacy rights.Links mentioned:- EFF website: eff.org- Privacy's Defender book: eff.org/privacysdefenderTimestamps00:00 - Stewart introduces Cindy Cohn, EFF Executive Director, who explains the organization's mission protecting digital rights since 1990.05:00 - Cindy connects counterculture roots to early internet idealism, describing how digital communication broke down physical barriers for organizing.10:00 - Cindy reveals surveillance becoming the dominant business model surprised her, blaming corporate consolidation over naive techno-optimism.15:00 - Discussion shifts to Silicon Valley's military contractor substrate and how corporate money co-opted hacker ethos.20:00 - Open source community faces existential threat from age verification legislation while open-weight AI models emerge as critical alternative.25:00 - Cindy outlines legal frameworks like compulsory licensing and easements that could democratize access to foundational AI models.30:00 - Privacy principles around secondary data use identified as core surveillance problem, with Anthropic's domestic surveillance red line praised.35:00 - Cloud Act, Five Eyes surveillance networks, and global jurisdictional complexity examined through individual threat modeling lens.40:00 - Constitutional rights and democratic participation framed as irreplaceable bulwarks against authoritarian surveillance tendencies.45:00 - Cindy announces departure from EFF after 26 years, naming successor Nicole Ozer while planning return to courtroom litigation.Key Insights1. The Electronic Frontier Foundation was founded in 1990, before the World Wide Web existed, by Mitch Kapoor, John Perry Barlow, and John Gilmore, with early support from Steve Wozniak. Its core mission is to ensure that civil rights and freedoms follow people into the digital world, using lawyers, technologists, and activists to keep the internet on the side of users.2. The early countercultural movement of the 1960s and 70s heavily influenced the founders of the internet and EFF. Figures like Barlow believed the digital world could reduce physical barriers like race, class, and geography, allowing people to be judged by the quality of their ideas rather than the circumstances of their birth.3. The dominant surveillance business model that emerged was not inevitable. Cohn argues it resulted from deliberate policy failures, particularly the abandonment of competition law, which allowed a handful of companies to consolidate control over the entire internet and adopt 360-degree data collection as their primary revenue strategy.4. Open source communities remain active and vital but are under serious threat from legislation like age verification laws that make it practically impossible to maintain fully open tools. Cohn sees this community as essential to reclaiming public control over computation, especially in the age of AI.5. The open weights question for AI models is fundamentally different from traditional open source software because of the enormous capital required to train foundation models. Cohn suggests legal mechanisms like compulsory licensing, similar to how cover songs work in copyright law, as one possible path toward broader public access.6. A core privacy principle Cohn advocates is that data collected for one purpose must not be used for others. This single rule, if enforced, would begin dismantling the infrastructure that enables mass individual surveillance, including the AI-powered profiling she sees as the next dangerous frontier.7. Cohn is stepping down from EFF after 26 years to allow new leadership and return to litigation, which is where she believes her impact is greatest. She also wrote a book called Privacy's Defender to preserve the history of digital rights fights from the 1990s onward and to help people understand how current threats emerged so they can work to reverse them.

We also take a serious look at the Internet Archive (Wayback Machine) being taken down and why rich interests are desperate to manipulate the digital landscape by erasing history.Plus: we start a PODCAST (producer) WAR with Joe Rogan (Jamie Vernon), the GaS Digital 10-year anniversary, and the strange circumstances surrounding recent Raytheon fires.Rise up in the comments and let us know: Is the Wayback Machine essential, or is it time for a new digital history?Air Date 4/16/26DON'T FORGET TO WATCH FAGA'S NEW SPECIAL "BURN AFTER SAYING" ON THE HSR YOUTUBE PAGE!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxIHJU2LotUSupport Our Sponsors!Body Brain Coffee: https://bodybraincoffee.com/ - Grab A Bag of Body Brain Coffee with Promo Code HSR20 to get 20% off!YoKratom: https://yorkratom.com/3rd Mic Harrington: https://3rdmicharrington.com/High Society Radio is 2 native New Yorkers who started from the bottom and didn't raise up much. What does a lone sailor circling the globe have to do with the fall of empires, the Model T, and the rise of AI? Everything--because maintenance, the quiet act of keeping things going, turns out to be the hidden force behind success and failure in nearly every domain of human endeavor. EconTalk's Russ Roberts speaks with Stewart Brand --creator of the Whole Earth Catalog, founder of the Long Now Foundation, and one of the great connective thinkers of the last half-century--to explore why some people and civilizations thrive while others collapse. From the 1968 Golden Globe Race, where three sailors' radically different attitudes toward maintenance determined their fates, to the M-16's deadly design flaws in Vietnam, to the cultural reasons Israel excels at crisis response but struggles with prevention, Brand ranges across history, warfare, technology, and philosophy. Along the way, they discuss John Deere's war against its own farmers, the Model T as democratic revolution, and what AI might mean for human vigilance and connection. A wide-ranging, endlessly surprising conversation about the unglamorous work that holds everything together.

How would your team's culture shift if you started catching people doing their jobs well and celebrating those moments publicly? In episode 265 of At The Table, Pat Lencioni and Cody Thompson revisit Pat's book The Truth About Employee Engagement, arguing its lessons are crucial now. They unpack the three root causes of employee misery - anonymity, irrelevance, and immeasurement - and show how any manager can improve work experience by addressing these human needs. Through stories and takeaways, they emphasize that making employees feel known, valued, and empowered to measure success requires only intentional, consistent attention.Topics explored in this episode: (00:06:46) Why the Solution Works EverywhereCody reflects on how remarkable it is that the book's solution applies equally to an airport fast-food worker and a Fortune 100 executive.Pat introduces the first sign of a miserable job, anonymity, explaining that employees who feel unseen and unknown by their managers simply cannot love coming to work, no matter how much they earn.(00:12:25) Retention, Counterculture & Practical AdvicePat and Cody discuss how knowing employees personally is a powerful and often overlooked retention strategy, noting that people rarely leave workplaces where they feel genuinely cared for as human beings. Why leaders should be vulnerable, admit the lapse openly, and invite employees to “catch you up” on their lives, then share what's going on in your own.(00:16:42) Why Every Job Must Matter to SomeonePat introduces the second sign of a miserable job, irrelevance, and illustrates it vividly by describing how a manager at the airport restaurant could tell that young employee his real purpose: to introduce a moment of joy and kindness into otherwise stressed travelers' days.Cody and Pat agree that the manager's responsibility is not only to articulate why a job matters, but to actively “catch” employees making a difference and celebrate those moments, because what gets celebrated gets repeated.(00:23:25) Immeasurement, the One-Minute Manager Demo & ClosingPat introduces the third sign, immeasurement, arguing that every employee needs a way to assess their own performance that doesn't depend solely on a manager's subjective opinion.Pat is challenging listeners to immediately improve in one area of knowing their people, reminding them why their work matters, and helping them measure their success. This episode of At The Table with Patrick Lencioni is brought to you by The Table Group: https://www.tablegroup.com.
