Winter Olympian Charlotte Gilmartin talks to Nicola Dean about the considerable pressures of performing at an elite level."Just because you're successful in sport, it doesn't mean you're happy."Charlotte Gilmartin is a 2x Winter Olympian GB short-track speed skater. Since she retired after the last Olympics, she's dedicated herself to championing safeguarding adults in sport.Charlotte has first-hand experience of just how fraught and intense life can be for elite athletes. A talent scout recognised her skills at a birthday party, and just three years later she was on the GB speed skating team. By this point she was just 15 years old; still a child, but suddenly she was expected to deal with the sort of pressures that could try even the most experienced of athletes.Charlotte talks about how the "hunger" of being an elite athlete makes happiness and contentment effectively impossible. The constant pressure to be your best is not conducive to mental and physical wellbeing. Often, attempts to be your very best can directly contradict the six principles of adult safeguarding. If you want to hear more from Charlotte, she's taking part in our Safeguarding Adults in Sport Participation Forums. This is your chance to help us develop best practice in safeguarding adults in sport!
The most senior family judge in England and Wales has ruled that a transgender man who gave birth with the help of fertility cannot be registered as his child's father. This is first case of its kind, and Rosalind English discusses the decision with Charlotte Gilmartin, who points out that the ruling endorses a tension between legal parentage and social/psychological parentage in transgender cases.
Alasdair Hooper hosts a special SportSpiel episode - the 50th ever produced - and is joined by British speed skating star Elise Christie. The 2017 World Champion is one of the best short track speed skaters in the world and has enjoyed phenomenal success. However, in conjunction with her phenomenal talent the self-declared 'goofball' has also endured her fair share of ups and downs with much of it aired in full public view at the Winter Olympics. With every medal achieved on the World and European stage it appears they have been countered by ticking every box of bad luck at the Olympics including falls, disqualifications, injury and social media abuse. In this special episode Elise talks in great depth about her life in speed skating, from starting out as a kid, to her Winter Olympic lessons to becoming the best in the world. We also talk about the dangers of social media, the prospect of competing in long track as well as what life is like with – and now without – her best friend Charlotte Gilmartin in training and competition. What comes out in this interview is an athlete who is as bubbly and entertaining as she is talented and – no matter what the haters on social media might say – you can’t keep this goofball down.
