At the beginning of the season, a lot of resorts organise Braderies where the local shops pool ex-hire or last season kit to sell in one convenient place. This week on the show Brian and Harrison are joined by Olympic Champion Lydia Lassila. Lydia is a former Australian freestyle skier (Aerials) and entrepreneur. She is a 5x Winter Olympian, winning Gold at Vancouver in 2010 and Bronze at Sochi in 2014. A trailblazer in her sport, she continually pushed the progression of her sport no matter the consequences, she is undoubtably one of Australia's greatest ever athletes. She is inspiring, incredibly resilient and has always maintained the very Aussie philosophy that it is just all about ‘having a crack', she delt with devastating injuries, took time away to start a family and many more challenges, but always got through with sheer grit and determination. As a youngster, Lydia was a talented gymnast with dreams of competing at the Olympics, injuries and opportunities forced her to give up her dream, but when a former coach called her and said that they were starting a pilot program that's goal was to turn gymnasts into aerial skiers, and with the carrot of the Olympics dangling, she was all in without hesitation, the only problem was, at that stage, Lydia had never skied before. Within 18 months, she competed at the Olympics in 2002 (Salt Lake City) and by the Olympics in 2018 (PyeongChang) she was one of Australia's most decorated and inspirational Winter Olympic athletes. In 2016, Lydia released a fantastic documentary called ‘The Will To Fly', which follows her journey to the 2014 Olympics, documenting her career to date and her experiences as mum and competing in one of the world's most dangerous sports. Lydia is also the founder of two businesses BodyICE (ice and heat therapy products) and Zone by Lydia (sustainable yoga gear). This week's podcast guest is Angus Ross. Angus is a former Winter Olympian employed by High Performance Sport New Zealand. He works with track and field and several other Olympic sports, including sprint cycling, skeleton, squash, rowing, tennis, and more. Angus has a PhD in exercise physiology from the University of Queensland and has been a multi-time guest on the podcast. He is an absolute wealth of knowledge on all things speed, power, and human performance. There is a lot that the world of sport can learn from track and field, but perhaps the most valuable lessons can be gained by studying the decathlon and heptathlon events. Most sports performance programs will jump, sprint, and throw, but the focused, competitive aspects of those events bring out the highest level of expression for pure outputs, along with the speed-endurance aspects. In today's podcast, Angus discusses the relationship between the multi-events and the needs of team sports, including the dynamics of creating scoring tables in a performance program and the connective tissue development multi-event training brings about. He discusses the relationship between speedbag training and sprinting. He also gets into isometrics and elasticity, as well as plenty of case studies and examples of putting these principles into action. I always have fantastic conversations with Angus; this talk was no exception. Today's episode is brought to you by Lost Empire Herbs, TeamBuildr and the Plyomat. And in terms of trying to maintain your athleticism, probably that elasticity, ability to bounce is probably something that we should be thinking about." - Angus Ross" “I talked at a high jump mini conference we had in New Zealand a little while ago. Made the analogy that it's really interesting, too, that the high jump + heptathlon is a really good combination. There's a lot of world class heptathlon athletes (who are really good at high jump). "With the decathlon. I kind of have this idea in my head, like the decathlon principle, in the sense of what could be applied for any event. Like almost this catalog of same but different skills to be good at if you want to be good at one thing." - Joel Smith" “But in contrast, volume of work probably is really good for your connective tissue and your fascial stuff and your tendons. And so perhaps the multi event is. And this is one of the things I was writing a couple of notes when you had some of those ideas to talk about. It's fascinating to me that we have now, we've got decathletes on the scene that can run 10...

He explained he was making the switch overseas because he was prioritising his athletic career over national pride. "At the end of the day, I want to be the best biathlete I can be. And I'd much rather be known as a good biathlete than just the guy from New Zealand who got pretty far, but never quite made it." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Apolo Ohno has won 8 Olympic medals & 21 World Championship medals, which makes him the most decorated US Winter Olympian in history! He was the state champion swimmer at age 13 & national speed skating champion at age 14, but it was short track speed skating that really caught his eye.Because to him, they were like Superman! After 6 months of training, Apolo won the 1997 US Championships. He was a shoo-in for the 1998 Winter Olympics but then... Apolo grew complacent. He self-sabotaged & threw away his training, finishing last in the Olympics trials. His father was so upset, he sent Apolo to an isolated cabin at Copalis Beach and said: "You'll stay here for as long as it takes for you to figure out what you want to do with your life!"That was traumatic.Apolo decided he would give this sport a real shot & that's when everything changed. But there was a price to pay for such "psychotic obsession".He was ruthless to everyone, including himself. In this STIMY Episode, we talked about how he finds FLOW, sports psychology, self-sabotage, the importance of recovery, and being obsessive without being "mindlessly handcuffed to it".So if you want to live your life to the fullest the way an Olympic champion does, then this is the episode for you!Highlights:3:27 Survival7:23 Why did this happen?10:35 Blowing up toilets?!12:25 Joining the Superman sports15:33 Sleeping with his skates16:48 Sacrifice22:01 Not being handcuffed to failure24:39 Self-sabotage30:57 The darker side to obsession39:31 Finding the FLOW state42:50 The power of introspection45:25 The controversial Salt Lake City Olympics win49:20 Turin Olympics50:46 Why Apolo turned away from Hollywood52:30 A lion is most dangerous when it knows it's near its end56:11 Psychotic obsession outside of sports57:31 Not returning to sports + Michael Phelps58:51 The Great Divorce1:02:37 What do you say yes to?1:05:07 Building his personal board of directors1:08:31 Who are you? My guest today is Noah Hoffman, a former two-time Winter Olympian with Team USA who recently made headlines for speaking out against the Beijing Olympics and International Olympic Committee (IOC). Noah has recently helped launch Global Athlete, an Olympic athlete movement dedicated to addressing the balance of power between athletes and Olympic administrators. In this episode we discuss his criticism of how the IOC operates, his interactions with current Team USA olympians, when protests are appropriate, the Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, and more. Whether you agree or disagree with today's guest, I invite you to join us with an open mind as we work to heal the division on future Olympic Games.Global Athlete: https://globalathlete.org/Noah Hoffman: https://twitter.com/hoffnoahman

Olympians, they're just like us! If you need someone to cheer for this Winter Olympics, look no further than St. Olaf graduate, Jake Brown. As a self proclaimed, ‘typical Minnesota distance athlete' Brown got his start in cross country skiing at a young age. His aerobic background from skiing made for a natural transition into running world when he got to high school. However, wile at Princeton he was longing to ski in college. He transferred to St. Olaf in 2013 and was an instant impact for their cross country program. St. Olaf was retuning five guys from the previous year's 14th place team. Adding Jake was the missing piece as they were able to take down North Central College by 2 points to take home the 2013 XC Team Title. With eligibility left to ski, Brown went to Northern Michigan University for graduate school. He was able to compete on the Nordic ski team and that's where it began to click for him with skiing. After being scouted at a Biathlon ID camp, Brown made his way to Vermont to train full time as a Biathlon athlete. Since then, he has gone to compete at 3 World Championships and was the 2019 US Biathlon Champ!
