The U.S. Men's Olympic speed skating team devised a new approach to the team pursuit event following their disappointing performance in the 2018 Winter Olympics. The team saw promising initial results from their innovations, but they faced a decision about whether to reveal their new techniques. The U.S. Team's strategy was easily imitated if competitors witnessed it in a race, but it was a risk not to test it in competition before the Olympics. And, were here possible upsides to imitation if it improved the entire sport? Should they share their techniques, and if so, when? Harvard Business School Assistant Professor Rebecca Karp joins Brian Kenny to discuss the case, “A Winning Strategy: Innovation in Olympic Speed Skating.”

Alpine Skiing:  Hang onto truck while wearing cowboy boots. Biathlon:  Shooting coyotes... aka Predator Control! Michigan's Shortest Fishing Season Ends in Just 48 Minutes Michigan's 2026 Black Lake sturgeon fishing season came and went fast — really fast. The season opened at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, and wrapped up just 48 minutes later when the six-fish quota was reached in Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties. According to the Department of Natural Resources, anglers landed fish starting at 8:07 a.m., with the final sturgeon harvested right at 8:48. In total, 679 anglers were registered, all competing in what's known as the shortest fishing season in the state. The largest catch was a 67-inch female sturgeon weighing just over 79 pounds. The other five fish ranged from about 53 to 64 inches long, weighing between 40 and 78 pounds. Each angler was allowed to keep just one fish and had to report it immediately. The season automatically closed once the sixth fish was taken, with anglers alerted by text and by DNR staff on the ice. Black Lake's sturgeon season is famous for its speed. Last year it lasted only 17 minutes, while in 2023 it stretched to just over an hour. In 2024, the season was canceled entirely because of unsafe ice. Lake sturgeon are among the oldest fish species in the Great Lakes, and their numbers dropped sharply in the past due to overfishing and habitat loss. Strict regulations and decades of restoration work have helped rebuild the population, allowing Michigan to continue this tightly controlled, blink-and-you-miss-it fishing tradition. Reference: https://www.woodtv.com/news/michigan/2026-lake-sturgeon-season-takes-48-minutes-to-hit-limit/ Duck Hunters Rescued After Becoming Trapped in Frozen Maryland River A dramatic helicopter rescue occurred January 31 when six duck hunters became stranded in the frozen Nanticoke River in Maryland on the final day of duck season. Natural Resources Police and Wildlife and Heritage Service crews were called out around 6:30 p.m. after the hunters' boat became inoperable in icy conditions. Temperatures were in the teens and low 20s, with strong winds, and thick ice prevented local fire crews from reaching them by water or boat ramp. Officials believe the hunters had completed their hunt and were heading back when they ran into trouble — either mechanical issues or ice that moved in after the shoot. A helicopter crew was already nearby but decided it was too dangerous to hoist the hunters due to high winds. Instead, rescuers launched an airboat from a nearby campground. The river is about a half-mile wide at that location, a well-known but risky late-season duck hunting area. All six hunters were safely brought back in two trips, checked by EMS, and returned to their vehicles. While it's unclear what happened to their boat — or whether they harvested any ducks — officials say it's a last-day hunt the group won't forget, and one they were fortunate to survive. The daily challenges and emotional toll of living with dense breast tissue and a heightened risk of breast cancer: Host Lisa Malia sat down with guest Caitlin Moyer to discuss a subject often overlooked.   Through Caitlin's candid narrative, listeners gain a window into the multi-layered journey many women face—from confusing mammogram results and insurance battles to the importance of building networks of support and advocating for oneself in a complicated medical system.   Stories like Caitlin's aren't just personal; they're powerful tools for education and community. A significant turning point in Caitlin's journey was realizing the crucial role of self-advocacy—especially when faced with conflicting or careless advice. She trusted her instincts, questioned the guidance, and ultimately chose to find a new gynecologist who aligned better with her needs.   Timestamps:    00:00 Caitlin Moyer's Breast Health Journey   05:29 Gynecologist's Troublesome Mammogram Recommendaition   09:00 "Advocacy and Proactive Healthcare"   10:22 Mammogram Controversy with OB GYN   15:04 Considering Preventive Mastectomy   16:38 Dense Tissue & Mastectomy Decision   21:29 Advocating for Necessary Healthcare Access   25:18 "Share Your Story Openly"   27:58 Genetic Risk and Double Mastectomy   30:10 Gratitude for conversation   Learn more about The Clear Pathways Program, Walk, Summit, App and Initiative powered by For The Love Of Cups and join our task force or advisory board: https://www.breastdensitysummit.org/   Caitlin Moyer is a passionate writer and storyteller who runs her own communications and marketing consulting agency, specializing in creative strategy, public relations, and social media. He was getting so excited, pointing out of the office windows out to the ice, talking about the crowd and the excitement, this was electric. Most people don't know what Derek had to go through to get there, and his story is absolutely captivating, as he wrote in his book, Reflections In The Ice. Being introduced to roller skating races to win a soda because he was thirsty. Eating stale food because he was hungry.  Transferring from roller to ice so that he could represent his country in the Olympic Games. Making it to Nagano in '98, only to be told THE NIGHT BEFORE THE RACE that due to a technically in timing in a qualifying race, that he couldn't skate. And then.... He stepped out onto his home ice in 2002. And...... He was the first ever Latino to win gold in the Winter Olympics. The event has been skated faster since then. But NEVER in the Olympic Games. This was a special interview. “I was scared to be nervous. I was ashamed of those feelings going around in my head.”While often your physical performance is seemingly the most apparent aspect of your functioning, the mental side is not to be underestimated, especially when it comes to the influence this has on your ability to achieve your goals. Dutch speed skater Kjeld Nuis has been on both sides of the coin and experienced what a difference mental fitness makes when it comes to winning. In this episode Kjeld recalls the career crossroads that inspired him to include mental training into his routine and reflects on the positive influence it had on his global success. Not everyone aims to break a world record, but this ability of recognising and accepting emotions is also hugely beneficial in everyday life as well. Hosts Cèdric and York approach this topic with a clear and simple exercise – the MAC method. This stands for Mindfulness – Acceptance – Commitment. The first step is to become mindful of your emotions. Try to identify and label the emotions you're feeling – an easier task than it sounds!Secondly, accept that this is the emotion you're feeling at this moment. Ask yourself where that emotion came from and why. Finally, committing to these emotions means not being ashamed of feeling them but rather sharing your experience with people you trust.Lastly, remember that being able to identify and understand an emotion you're feeling in a particular situation is already the biggest step towards utilising it to positive effect. What do you think?
