In part 5, Jill and Lewel discuss chapters 25 through the Epilogue of Nix's 1995 YA Dark Fantasy novel Sabriel.Sabriel and Touchstone cross the Wall to Ancelstierre in order to disinter and destroy Kerrigor, the Greatest Dead.
Huge thanks to Abbey for once again coming through and pre-ordering a whole book! Woohoo! This is the start of a new story set in the same world as Sabriel, and it follows nearly 15 years after the events of the previous book. There's a lot of mystery surrounding just who Lirael is, and I'm of course low-key wanting her to be related to Sabriel in some way. Meanwhile, there's some new torment on the horizon, as a dude surfaces who apparently can harness a dark power even stronger than Kerrigor's. Me no lilkey.
Huge thanks to Abbey for commissioning this entire book! Goddamn! This is the final section, and I'm really intrigued by the mystery of what happens with both Mogget and Kerrigor in the end. I can't figure out what this could mean for Sabriel in the future other than that she now has two cats with too much knowledge and bad attitudes whose litterboxes she has to clean. There were some things that were just a little lacking to me, though, namely how little I really feel like I know Sabriel. I really would have liked to spend more time with her before we went right into crisis mode, so that I could get more of a feel for who she is outside of magical ability and crisis situations. This has been such an interesting and imaginative read! Thank you again, Abbey!
Many thanks to Abbey for commissioning this episode!I've said it once and I will say it again; the creatures in this book are some of the most creative and horrifying I've ever come across. Every time I think we've encountered what's bound to be the worst one of the lot, we wind up stumbling upon another one that's absolutely disgusting and makes me want to sit down and give this author some counseling. These chapters, Sabriel finally discovers her father's body, and it's bittersweet as she realizes that he's going to have just enough strength in him to come back and fight Kerrigor, but no more. Also, there's a child slavery ring on the outskirts of the city that's going to need to be dealt with. I'm frankly somehow less worried about Kerrigor than I am about that. Thank you all so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
The Tattered Man has entered the real world and promises to kill Assad or Kerrigor. How will Nestle take on this monster that has been plaguing the trio this entire time? Can he do it alone? Is this the end? Intro by Ross Bugden.
Kerrigor makes some improptu friends this episode to the dismay of Assad and some indifference from Nestle. Seriously though. What the heck Kerrigor!? Music by Ross Bugden and Kevin MacLeod.
Many many thanks to Abbey for commissioning the first chapters of Sabriel by Garth Nix! I'm very excited to be getting into this whole new world with its strange rules and barriers between magical countries and non-magical ones. The prologue of this book introduces us to Sabriel's father on the night of her birth, and we get to see firsthand how his particular brand of necromancy works. She and her mother should both have died, but Abhorsen manages to snag her up from the river of death before she passed through the first gate beyond his reach. But he runs into a creepy creature called Kerrigor and I don't doubt that will be coming back up again. Then there's a time jump and we get to meet a teenage Sabriel who is at a school that feels shockingly modern considering the vibe of the world we saw in the prologue. She's a rare sort of dual-citizen, and when it looks like her father is in trouble, she packs her bags and heads into the Old Kingdom to find out what happened to him. I'm very into it, and excited to read more! Thanks so much Abbey!
