Head to the nearest midden and abandon all hope - The Ragwitch has you in her thrall! We have a blast discussing Garth Nix's first novel and following Paul and Julia's external and internal journeys. We consider the ways in which this work shows the beginnings of the Abhorsen series and do our best to start a rumor that Garth is a necromancer. Typical Dragon Babies stuff. Your hosts wax poetic about nostalgic memories of the Old Kingdom series (even if Lilly doesn't like that name). They give an overview of the series including the original trilogy Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen and the recent installations Clariel, Goldenhand, and Terciel & Elinor. It's a rare pleasure to reread a book that was so influential to our youth that is still enjoyable as adults. They also explore purposeful mispronunciations of words (like Abhorsen) and the general foibles that follow. Thanks to the following musicians for the use of their songs:- Amarià for the use of “Sérénade à Notre Dame de Paris”- Josh Woodward for the use of “Electric Sunrise”Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License

Hi from the UK! I’ve been listening to your podcast for years – I love it. You’re both awesome! I’ve been playing a lot of the video game Ghosts of Tsushima recently and I’d love some recommendations for books set in Japan to complement it! I like historical fiction, literary fiction, fantasy, sci-fi (I’ll pretty much try anything). I have Pachinko on my list. Bonus points for Samurai.  -Charlotte 3. My wife and I just had a baby on Valentine’s Day. We are white, Christian, and a LGBT family. We want our daughter to have as much diversity as possible. We have the little leaders and dream big series along with plenty of feminist books. We need some picture books about transgender kids, Muslim (or other religions) children, and children of different races/cultures. What are your favorite picture books for us to add to her library? Thank you! -Jessica 4. Could you recommend a fantasy or sci-fi read-alike for The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison? The things I like most about it are the fantasy elements, the fact that the main character is a person in power who leads responsibly because he’s genuinely a good, empathetic person, and the way that the protagonist learns to assert and value himself slowly throughout the book. Either way, thanks for your time! I appreciate you and your work! -Laura 5. I have been enjoying getting into some more door-stopper sized books this year and was hoping you could help me find some more. Specifically, I’d love an adult fantasy novel with a female lead (preferably written by a woman) maybe with a little steaminess. I generally really enjoy fantasy which doesn’t operate within the standard Tolkein-esque genre, but has its own twist and interesting world building. I read Kushiel’s Dart and that’s almost what I was looking for but I just couldn’t get past all the questionable consent stuff…. I don’t think I’ll be reading the rest of the series. Some fantasy books I have loved (not all door-stoppers) include the Broken Earth trilogy, the Abhorsen trilogy, Gideon the Ninth, Lies of Locke Lamora, and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. A friend recently got me into the Wheel of Time series as well, which is fun but with a much more male-centric, standard fantasy feel. I do like when sci-fi elements are thrown into a fantasy world (such as with Gideon), but would prefer it to lean more into the fantasy side of things (already have some good sci-fi ones on my shelf). Generally not a huge fan of time travel or robots (excepting Murderbot). Please no sexual violence. I look forward to your recommendations. Thanks! -April 6. Hi! About a year ago, I finally told my husband (and admitted to myself) that I’m bisexual. I hadn’t told anyone else because, well, I’m happily married and it’s not like I’m looking to date. And then, just a couple weeks ago I found out that my best friend of over 30 years is also bisexual! I would love a rec for a book she and I could read about bi women, preferably not a coming of age kind of book, but about grown women who are who they are but also bi. Any genre is good – we are both voracious readers. Thanks! -Jaimie 7. I want to find a fantasy book with the main characters as not human. Like wings of fire. I love animal companions! A couple of my favourites are Mogget the cat from Garth Nix’s Abhorsen trilogy, Doe-Eyes the dog from Meagan Spooner’s Hunted, and Maruman the cat from Isobelle Carmody’s Obernewtyn series, but my list is very long. One thing I know for sure is that you can’t just put an animal in your story, mention it’s there and declare your work done. An animal companion is woven right into the story’s fabric—they have a part to play and a purpose to serve. Done right, they enrich your work, so here are three tips for making the most of your animal companions. I also give you my monthly book recommendation: this time it's The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang. "Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?" This episode is partly celebration of one of my favorite female characters and partly a series recommendation for the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. Sabriel is a heroine whose story I have returned to again and again. She is one of a long line of people called the Abhorsen, who stand against necromancers and sorcerers determined to bring armies of the Dead into life. At 18, Sabriel leaves school to find her father, the current Abhorsen, after he goes missing. Armed with a sword and seven bells, she crosses the Wall into the Old Kingdom and begins her search -- both in Life, and in Death. I figured it's appropriate on International Women's Day to highlight one of the coolest characters I've come across! Sabriel knows her power, she knows what she has to do, and she does it. She's smart and determined and witty and strong. Quite simply, she's badass. I hope you'll think so too! Here's a link to the cover of Sabriel that hooked me all those years ago as a kid in the library!

Thank you so much to Abbey for commissioning this episode, and thank you to Yama for correcting my mistake on the earlier post in which I thought that I had fucked up and in fact HAD, but in a different way than I thought. Oof! It's been a confusing month, y'all! It's finally the finale episode! And I was really impressed with the way this book ended, even despite the fact that there's not a horribile, tragic death. The Disreputable Dog passes on into death, though, and we know that Lirael is really going to miss her, even though I really don't quite count her as a death in the same way because I knew that she wasn't going to stick around forever. I really enjoyed this book, and I'm impressed how the author got me to feel just how high the stakes were when I'm kind of immune to apocalypse storylines. I was genuinely a little freaked out. But first, we've got to deal with Hedge. Predictably, he has followed Lirael into Death and he's decided that it's a really good idea to battle her in a place that is so dangerous that even getting a glimpse of the sky will cause him to be pulled away from the mortal veil forever. Wow so I was tempted to say that this is when things really begin to pop off, but there's so much left of this book that I'm actually guessing that isn't true at all. Because you know what? Nick is still alive, and I have a terrible feeling that things won't really be popping off until he's dead. And I hate it. In these chapters, the dead finally manage to get past the wall and the poor idiot dudes from Ancelstierre don't know what the hell the undead are and they're not at all prepared. Thank you very much to Abbey for commissioning this episode! These chapters are really interesting to me because things don't really go according to plan, and yet they all work out for the best (at least in the short term). Lirael and Sameth attempt to cross the wall under a glamour to make them look like soldiers, but the people who work there are no fools and they can tell something is up. Which, you know what? GOOD. Thank heaven for that. I'm really hopeful that they're going to be able to help poor Nick because I'm still weirdly preoccupied with worry about him. At the very least, I'm impressed with Sameth getting ahold of himself despite the news (which we now know is incorrect) that his parents are dead. He's really growing! She's got her work cut out for her to convince him that there's something going on with him other than a simple fever, and it's not until he tries to fight back against the fragment taking him over that he really gets a good sense of how serious the situation is. Then we get the tale from the Disresputable Dog about what exactly is in the hemispheres, and unsurprisingly, it's nothing good. Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you very much to Abbey for commissioning this episode! I'm so into this book, y'all. I feel like the groundwork laid in the previous books has really paid off, and I've grown very invested in what happens to everyone. Even Mogget! He's back, and he's acting suspicious and I'm absolutely dying to know what his deal is. In these chapters, there's a rescue op for poor Nicholas, and I feel so fucking heartbroken for him. He can't even follow the Dog's magical command to walk, and the Thing inside him keeps fighting...it's just really fucking upsetting. Then there's Sabriel and Touchstone, who....ARE ALIVE! What?! I was tricked! But I'm totally okay with it. I'm not easy to trick so Nix really earned this one. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thank you to Abbey for commissioning this episode! Soooooo...funny story. Here's the thing. I got a little overexcited and I just...kept reading. So this one episode is actually going to cover 100 pages rather than the usual 50. MY BAD!I just was so INTERESTED. We start out in the well, with our crew heading under into the dark. It's not so bad at first, because we've got Lirael's light to see by...but there's something else down there, and soon the light is snuffed out. This leads to one of the creepiest scenes in the books so far, and we say goodbye to Mogget. Except we don't. WHAT IS HAPPENING?

Thank you so much to Abbey for commissioning this episode! I'm so excited to be starting this book, because damn but it starts out with a serious fucking gut punch. Sabriel and Touchstone are killed, abruptly and brutally, in a prologue that's just kind of a shock and which I had to reread to be sure that I wasn't misreading. Because GODDAMN. Then there's the tension of what's going on with Lirael and Sameth, and they wind up in the same scenario as Sabriel a couple decades back...they have to get the fuck out of the Abhorsen's house because they've been cornered. And the only real option is down a well with something horrible hiding in it. NO THANKS. Thanks so much for listening!

Fucking Hedge. I hate you. Meanwhile, Lirael has found out that she's actually Sameth's aunt, and it's the best way to quash his inappropriate crush on her that I've ever heard of. Sameth, I swear to god, you need to shut the fuck up about how her scarf looks. Thanks for listening, and I can't wait to see you with Abhorsen!

They have feathers‽ There are dinosaurs bigger and meaner than T-rex‽ Brontosaurus exists again‽ Please help fill my knowledge gap with a fun read to catch me up on at least some small part of what I’ve missed in the dinosaur world in the last…*cough*…few years! -Kayla 2. Hello, my younger sister and I are going on our Birthright trips to Israel this winter, and I’m looking for some great books to read during all the traveling. I would love if I could find a book set in Israel, past or present that I haven’t read yet. When I’m traveling I generally prefer fantasy, science fiction, or mystery, but I will read anything anybody from Book Riot recommends. I really haven’t read any books set in Israel, or inspired by it, so I think anything you suggest will be new to me. Side note, y’all and the entire Book Riot family are awesome!! -Liza 3. I find myself in the odd position of loving fantasy books about necromancy while also having a phobia of ghosts. I LOVE the Abhorsen books by Garth Nix, and I recently had the opportunity to read an ARC of Twice Dead by Caitlin Seal. They both are perfect examples of the necromantic fantasy that works for me. Do you know of other books that deal with this subject without tropes that will give me horrible nightmares (poltergeists, haunted houses, etc)? Thank you! -Phasmophic 4. I’m looking for recommendations of poetry or otherwise that is similar to anything by Amanda Lovelace or Rupi Kaur. I’ve already inhaled the newest release by Amanda Lovelace and wouldn’t mind something a little more lighthearted to contrast the heavy topics both authors write about. Thank you! -Elin 5. Hi Ladies! I’m wondering if you can suggest some fun action/thriller type audiobooks by people of color – something in the vein of Dan Brown, with some puzzles and some action, but generally just a fun ride. I like to listen to audio books while I work, and these types of books make the day speed by. Thanks! -Jaimie 6. Hi! I am currently reading Mary Beard’s SPQR and loving it! I was wondering if you had any recommendations for historical fiction set in ancient Rome or Greece. I’ve read a good amount of fantasy set in those eras, but would love recommendations for something a little more historical and a little less fantasy. Thank you so much! -Nikita 7. Hello! I’m a big fan of the podcast (and of Book Riot), and I was hoping you could help me out. I don’t read a lot of romance, but I recently read Hot Head by Damon Suede (because I heard about it from you, I think!), and I really liked it. I’m looking for something similar, so I can stop rereading it: LGBTQ (no preference), pining, friends-to-lovers, etc. I would prefer something WITHOUT a ton of homophobia and WITH a happy ending. I’m open to any sub-genre. Sex is fine, but I’m looking for something with a good story, too. These chapters are the ones in which Sameth and Lirael finally meet up with one another, and it's not exactly a meet cute, since they both do not trust one another and their pets don't even get along. But first, Lirael has a run-in with Hedge, the creepy AF necromancer that almost got to Sameth and who already did get to poor Nicholas. This is the one thing that she and Sameth can bond over, and yet despite Sameth's apparent concern for his friend Nicholas, he's still low-key planning to chill at the Abhorsen house and let Lirael go on by her lonesome because he's just that big a traitor at this point. Come on, Sam. Don't do this. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Thanks to Abbey for commissioning another episode of Lirael! This has been a lot of fun to read now that we're in more than one POV, and I feel like the author is really getting better at setting up who these characters are before we get into the main adventure.Lirael isn't having the best time. Spoiler alert, neither is Sameth. He's supposed to be studying the Book Of The Dead, and yet just touching it causes what amounts to a PTSD flashback, which sucks and makes him super self-conscious when seeing his parents again. Meanwhile, Lirael still isn't gifted with Sight, and decides to go on a bit of a quest with the Despicable Dog, which leads to a really ancient cave that literally bears her name. Many many thanks to Abbey for commissioning the first chapters of Sabriel by Garth Nix! I'm very excited to be getting into this whole new world with its strange rules and barriers between magical countries and non-magical ones. The prologue of this book introduces us to Sabriel's father on the night of her birth, and we get to see firsthand how his particular brand of necromancy works. She and her mother should both have died, but Abhorsen manages to snag her up from the river of death before she passed through the first gate beyond his reach. But he runs into a creepy creature called Kerrigor and I don't doubt that will be coming back up again. Then there's a time jump and we get to meet a teenage Sabriel who is at a school that feels shockingly modern considering the vibe of the world we saw in the prologue. She's a rare sort of dual-citizen, and when it looks like her father is in trouble, she packs her bags and heads into the Old Kingdom to find out what happened to him. I'm very into it, and excited to read more! Thanks so much Abbey!

(The term domestic is used with a large pinch of salt!) Popular pets, affectionate companions, independent hunters and cunning predators, the common moggy has traded little of its wildness in exchange for a comfortable home and regular meals - and it still carries an aura of mystery. This week the dragons look at the cat in myth and legend, in their personal experiences and in how the creature slinks into fiction. Good morning, I'm going on a trip to France (Paris/Strasbourg) in November and looking for book recs for the summer, preferably historical fiction or mystery. We'll be visiting several palaces, so books related to the monarchy would be great. I'm pretty well-read on British/Scottish history but pretty ignorant on French history. (Totally on board for rich people problems :) Recent faves are the Lytton trilogy (Penny Vincenzi), Life After Life (Kate Atkinson), The Diviners series (Libba Bray), Rules of Civility (Amor Towles), Flight of Gemma Hardy (Margaret Livesey), anything by Tana French. I've checked off Atonement/the Nightingale/Everyone Brave is Forgiven. Thanks so much! Love the show! --Brittney   2. Hi Ladies! Like Amanda I really love the rich people problems types of books, from YA books like the Map of Fates series and Gossip Girl to The Vacationers, Rich and Pretty, The Nest, and most recently the Kevin Kwan series Crazy Rich Asians (amazing on audio). I love the fashion and luxury and over the top feel of these books, they’re just... fun and a nice escape from reality. Can you provide me with some recommendations (preferably contemporary settings)? --Jenn   3. Hey y'all! I love the podcast. This year I decided to read more and I love getting deep cut recs that I'd have never found on my own. I'm writing to ask about audiobook recommendations, specifically audiobooks with full cast productions such as American Gods, His Dark Materials, and Lincoln in the Bardo. I find that full cast productions are especially engrossing! Please no abridgments or dramatizations. I'm also not a huge fan of sci fi, I'm just not into space! Thank you so much :) --Bess   4. Greetings, magical unicorns! I am interested in books with pregnant protagonists. The kind where they are doing something badass. Not necessarily fighting crime or saving humanity, but living their lives and being kickass while also growing a human. Some examples that comes to mind are "The Fireman," "Persons Unknown," or even the latest Spider-Woman comic where Jessica Drew was a badass pregnant superhero. These ladies are not sitting around on fainting couches because they feel fragile. They're taking life by the horns and not letting a little thing like the miracle of life stop them. --Emily   5. Hi Jenn and Amanda! I moved recently and joined a new book group full of smart, engaged women in their thirties and early forties. All of us have full-time jobs and some of the members have young kids (one of the women has a full-time job, an 18-month old, AND is getting her MBA!) Needless to say, everyone has good intentions to read the books each month, but with everyone's busy schedules, sometimes only one or two of us actually finds the time to actually do it. I am hoping you can provide a couple of suggestions for books that will entice the entire group to read the whole book. We read fiction and nonfiction, although the group seems to prefer fiction, and nothing too long would help the cause. One of the group's absolutely favorite reads was A Man Called Ove and we recently read Three Junes by Julia Glass which the people who read it really enjoyed but some of the members tried to start it and couldn't get into it. Thanks for any suggestions you have! --Halle   6. I am an avid reader but, unfortunately, have not been able to read for the past few months. It's getting harder for me to get back to reading. I started with Beloved, but I found it heavy and not very engaging. My favorites include To Kill a Mockingbird and Eat, Pray, Love. Hoping that you can help :) --Shivani   7. Hi Amanda and Jenn, First, love the podcast! I recently finished The Magicians Trilogy and absolutely loved it! Could you please recommend more fantasy books like this series? I was originally drawn to the series because I had heard it was “Harry Potter for grown-ups” but what I really liked about these books was that they were moody and gritty in addition to whimsical, and the characters flawed and complex. If it helps, I also loved the Abhorsen books by Garth Nix and the Night Circus, and I disliked The Paper Magician and The Book of Lost Things. No YA please, and bonus points for a female protagonist. This week on the MashReads podcast, we discuss Don't Call Us Dead, a poetry collection by Danez Smith, focusing on "Summer, Somewhere," the book's breathtaking 25 page opening poem about the afterlife of black boys murdered by police. Then, inspired by the depiction of paradise in "Summer, Somewhere," we discuss our favorite portrayals of death and the afterlife in literature including: Lincoln In The Bardo by George Saunders, The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak, the Mediator series by Meg Cabot, the Abhorsen series by Garth Nix, and No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre. Then, as always we close the show with recommendations: You can see Peter's "u bum" sweatshirt here. Aliza recommends watching the movie Scream this month for Halloween. "It is a meta treatise on slasher films... I would recommend that if you're uneasy but interested in scary movies, then check out Scream." Also, she is embarking on a quest to watch one horror movie each day in October. You can follow along on her 31 day quest here. Peter recommends you watch the horror movie A Dark Song, a hidden gem on Netflix. "It's really quiet and it ratchets up the dread a little bit at a time, and it's really fun, in the way that horror movies are good. It's great and atmospheric." MJ recommends all of the articles celebrating the rise of Cardi B, especially "Bloody Slippers: The Fairy-Tale Come-Up of Cardi B" by Lindsay Zoladz and "Cardi B, the Female Rapper Who Ousted Taylor Swift From the Top of the Charts." "Just shout out to Cardi B and her tremendous achievement. 'Bodak Yellow' is a bop, through and through." He also recommends "Is True Love Real, Y/N," an advice column by JP Brammer for Grindr's digital magazine Into. "I read this essay and I got Cheryl Strayed, Tiny Beautiful Things level chills."

Topic: Sabriel by Garth NixGeek: EmilyYeah, you knew there was going to be an episode by this title eventually. Also, let me preface this by saying that half of our Sabriel discussion, originally a two-episode set, has vanished. We’re blaming it on Daleks and/or internet goblins even though it’s 100% my being an idiot. What follows is a combination of the usual introductory post and the main point you’re missing from that disappearing tape.Sabriel is a Young Adult fantasy novel, and I first read it when I was (surprise surprise) a fantasy-obsessed young adult. I went through this phase from about ages 12-16 where I would go to the YA section of the bookstore and literally choose books by the font on the spine. The more gothic or ancient-looking the font – in other words, the more it said “there are probably dragons in here” – the more likely I was to read it. It was a pretty hit or miss decision-making process.A big factor in the “miss” side of that was the fact that, although it’s getting better, a lot of the best of those books just don’t have many women. This is super depressing when you’re a 13-year-old girl obsessed with knights and armor and stuff. This book is a serious exception. Now, before you climb all over me about the incredible female protagonists out there in YA, let me explain: Sabriel is not the only awesome (read: well-developed, human, and also pretty badass) heroine in the genre. I’m all about Tamora Pierce and Robin McKinley and anyone else who’s ever given a girl a sword.Kel is a badass, as was Alanna the Lioness before her. But they both had to fight a patriarchal fantasy system. But despite all their magic and dragons and whatnot, those authors’ fantasy worlds tend to look a hell of a lot like our own in terms of gender norms and societal power structures. Pierce, for instance, writes incredible heroines, but they’re still women in a man’s world. They’re always having to prove that they’re as strong and as tough as the boys, that being strong doesn’t make them any less women, and that having empathy and emotion doesn’t make them any less strong. Not so in Sabriel’s world.Well, ok, the country south of the wall, Ancelstierre, is basically Europe right before World War I and it’s kind of the worst, gender roles included. But the Old Kingdom? Merchants and mercenaries and royal guards and anyone else you can think of are both male and female, totally unremarkably. All those nameless background characters get their gendered pronouns thrown around willy-nilly, and no one cares because it’s just not an issue. There’s powerful magic tied up in blood, literally inherent in families’ blood, so there’s no nonsense about needing a son to inherit a throne or a title; it’s all about an heir who has the family blood. Sabriel has all kinds of obstacles to face as she grows into her role as Abhorsen, but her gender just. isn’t. one of them. And this raises an important point fantasy authors seem all too often to forget: You’re making all of this up. If the gender politics are shitty, it’s because you made them that way.I’m going to keep reading and watching Game of Thrones, and I’m going to reread Narnia and Tamora Pierce and all the other fantasy I love to pieces, and I obviously think you should too. But like, maybe let’s keep that last point in mind, you know? There’s no such thing as a fantasy world that just is the way it is. Somebody wrote it all, and there’s no reason more of them couldn’t write more worlds where the oppressions we deal with in real life simply don’t exist. The more we accept that all possible worlds simply are this way, the more we accept that our own world can’t change.Aaaaand /rant.Sorry folks. Your TL;DR here is that Sabriel rocks, more fantasy should work this way, and you should definitely read it and then listen to this episode. Enjoy! This month, Ryan Van Winkle and our own Sasha de Buyl interview best-selling YA authors Garth Nix (@garthnix), Leigh Bardugo (@LBardugo) and David Levithan (@loversdiction) about returning to different worlds, crafting a series and creating characters that break the mould.Garth Nix is the Australian-born author of the Old Kingdom series, the Keys to the Kingdom series and the Seventh Tower series. Written almost 20 years ago, Sabriel was the first book in the Old Kingdom series and told the story of a young girl tasked with making sure the dead stay dead. Though Garth hasn't returned to the world of the Old Kingdom since 2003's Abhorsen, last year's Clariel found him back there, this time several hundred years before the events of Sabriel. Garth talks to Sasha about what it was like to go back, and why he went there again.Leigh Bardugo is the Jerusalem-born, LA-raised author of The Grisha Trilogy, a YA fantasy series that comprises Shadow and Bone, Seige and Storm and the third in the trilogy, Ruin and Rising. Shadow and Bone tells the story of Alina Starkov, an orphan who has to harness powers she didn't even know she had in order to save her best friend. The novel debuted on the New York Times bestseller list and the series has proved incredibly popular. Leigh talks to Ryan about crafting a trilogy, realising your potential and never taking a break. David Levithan is the hugely popular American author of a number of YA books, including Boy Meets Boy and The Realm of Possibility, and books for adults including The Lover's Dictionary. In collaboration with Rachel Cohn, he wrote Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, which was adapted into a film in 2008. His newest novel Every Day tells the the story of A, a character that wakes up in a different body and in a different life each morning. David talks to Ryan about creating a character without physical characteristics, what makes us ourselves and the nature of love.Podcast contents00:00 - 01:02 Introduction01:10 - 14:08 Garth Nix interview14:09 - 22.39 Leigh Bardugo interview22:40 - 36:27 David Levithan interviewBook Talk is produced by Colin Fraser of Culture Laser Productions.
