In this Thursday episode of Book Talk for BookTok, we bring an academic lens to bookish culture, genre fiction, and the conversations shaping romance and romantasy today. Our podcast blends literary analysis, cultural criticism, and emotional honesty. We treat romance, romantasy, and fanfiction as genres worthy of serious discussion, not just quick takes. This episode is part of our Subtext Society series, inspired by The Subtext Society Journal. The Subtext Society Journal is a collaborative publication dedicated to thoughtful essays on romance, romantasy, fan culture, and publishing ethics. We explore moral questions, genre evolution, power dynamics, and the real-world impact of stories, guided by values of literary rigor without gatekeeping, community over hierarchy, and ethics-first analysis. Today's discussion focuses on the article: “The Mother Curse in Fantasy and Romantasy." This episode explores a thought-provoking essay examining the “mother curse” in fantasy and romantasy — the recurring pattern in which maternal figures are absent, idealized, villainized, or narratively sidelined. Drawing on examples across popular genre fiction, the article argues that mothers are frequently reduced to plot devices: either saintly protectors who lack depth, antagonistic figures who embody trauma, or background characters removed from the story through death, illness, or distance. Rather than treating this as a simple trope critique, the piece considers why authors may struggle to portray complex motherhood and asks whether the genre itself avoids fully realized maternal perspectives. Ultimately, it proposes a shift toward richer, more nuanced portrayals (including stories that center mothers as protagonists) and invites readers to reconsider how fantasy narratives shape our understanding of gender, agency, and family dynamics. Key Takeaways:Chasing a yes often comes from anxiety, not intention, and people can feel that pressure immediately. When you stop needing a specific outcome, your tone relaxes and trust increases naturally. Your role is to help others decide freely, not to manage your own fear through follow-ups.Momentum shows up as shared energy, mutual curiosity, and agreed-upon next steps. Chasing looks like one-sided check-ins, escalating urgency, and tension after sending messages. Learning to tell the difference protects your time and preserves relational integrity.People avoid giving honest answers when saying no feels costly or awkward. Explicit permission to decline reduces avoidance and leads to faster, cleaner decisions. Trust grows when people feel respected, regardless of what they choose.Fantasy relationships rely on polite delays that sound like yes but function as no. Booking the next meeting during the current one turns vague interest into real movement. When someone will not schedule a follow-up, it is often wiser to release than to pursue. “Pressure is when a donor feels managed. Relationship is when they feel respected.” “A fantasy relationship just means that you're not able to be honest. So you're both pretending… because nobody knows what to say to actually get you out of it.” “The more permission you give people to say no, the more likely they are to say yes.” - Maryanne Dersch Let's Work Together to Amplify Your Leadership + Influence1. We often start the worldbuilding process with a lot of exciting ideas, shiny notions, and fun experiments -- so then, how do you make it make sense? Even in an invented world with its own history, geography, magic, and other special conditions, we generally still want it to feel like the society could plausibly have developed as we're presenting it. Guest Andrea Stewart joins us to discuss how we can create systems of power and culture-making in invented worlds that still reflect how real people really behave. [Transcript for Episode 174] Our Guest: Andrea Stewart is the daughter of immigrants, and was raised in a number of places across the United States. Stewart is a Sunday Times Bestselling author whose short stories can be found in such venues as Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Daily Science Fiction, Galaxy's Edge, and others. Her debut epic fantasy novel, The Bone Shard Daughter, was a finalist for the Locus Award for Best First Novel, the British Fantasy Award for Best Novel, the Goodreads Choice Award for Fantasy and Debut Novel, and the BookNest Award for Best Traditionally Published Novel. She now lives in sunny California, and in addition to writing, can be found herding cats, looking at birds, and falling down research rabbit holes

With so much of the world focused on games right now, it seemed only natural for us to do the same and the results are pure off-the-rails gold. (If they gave medals for going on random tangents, we'd be the competitors to beat.) In this new side quest, we discuss Reigns: The Witcher, the just-announced Witcher mobile game releasing later this month, before we deep dive into all the recent rumors about a possible new Witcher 3 DLC. Could they be true, and if so, what would we like to see? We consider the pros and cons of releasing DLC for a game that's now over a decade old before we wrap up with Valerie's thoughts on The Conqueror's Witcher Virtual Challenge and why she may never make it out of Velen. Oh, and we wind up talking about sex cards. Because of course we do.

Voice Of Costume - Creating Character through Costume Design
From childhood fantasy to building entire worlds in fabric, this episode reveals how costume design becomes character, story, and emotion on screen. In this rich, intimate conversation, host Catherine Baumgardner sits down with acclaimed costume designer Marion Boyce to explore how imagination, research, and relentless craftsmanship shape unforgettable characters. Boyce reflects on her childhood spent in fantasy worlds, tracing a direct line from early play and family textile heritage to a career designing for some of the most visually ambitious period dramas in film and television. The discussion dives deep into her work on The Artful Dodger, unpacking how color palettes, fabric choices, and historical underpinnings communicate power, class, rebellion, and constraint—often before a character speaks a single word. Boyce reveals why books and primary visual references still matter more than fast online searches, and how accuracy in silhouette, corsetry, and underpinnings is essential to keeping an audience emotionally grounded. From designing crinolines that physically shape a character's movement, to using color as metaphor for grief, danger, and desire, Boyce explains costume as active storytelling—not decoration. She also opens up about the intense realities of production schedules, the pressure of massive builds, collaboration with directors and actors, and the personal cost of creative obsession. The episode becomes a masterclass in costume design, world-building, and the unseen labor that makes cinematic storytelling feel truthful and alive. https://www.marionboycecostume.com/ The "Voice of Costume" is the first podcast created between working costume designers sharing stories, inspiration, struggles, and insights into the creative career of costume design. In this episode of Sabbatical Insider, Dr. Fredrick J. Long shares a behind-the-scenes look at what sabbatical really looks like—beyond rest, into creativity, reflection, and meaningful work. The episode begins with highlights from a fishing trip through Arizona and Lake Havasu, capturing moments of recreation, beauty, and unexpected success on the water. From there, Dr. Long walks viewers through progress on his fantasy–sci-fi novel The Last Silver Snail, including typesetting, image creation, and learning new creative tools to bring the story to life.He also reflects on the less visible but equally important aspects of sabbatical life: grading doctoral work, mentoring adjuncts, participating in faculty conversations, and responding to an invitation to contribute a devotional on freedom—a major biblical theme with deep theological, political, and social implications. This episode weaves together fishing, fantasy writing, and biblical reflection, offering an honest and thoughtful glimpse into the rhythms, joys, and tensions of sabbatical life.#bible #biblestudy #fishing #fish #nature #vlog #vlogs #vlogger #vlogging #vlogvideo #fantasy #novel #author #booktok #books #booktube #book #freedom #scholar #scholarship #devotional #faith #jesus #christ #christ #education #teacher #teaching #podcast ***GlossaHouse resources are available at our website! - https://glossahouse.com/✏️ ***Sign up for classes with GlossaHouse U - https://glossahouse.com/pages/classes

Send a textI homebrew all my games. Well, not all of them. Over the years I have tried my hand at running modules to mixed results. As I have talked about before on this podcast, I like the freedom of homebrew, the ability to change things up at a moments notice and the freedom to let the players take me on a ride. As a matter of fact, I am putting together a Twilight 2000 game and while I am stealing the name and location setting of the classic first adventure, I am homebrewing everything else.Recently I have been making these homebrew adventures a little more formal in there set up and construction and I have even written a series of adventures for Oddfish Games, How To Roleplay With Your Cat, that hopefully will be available at GenCon this year. I wrote a one-shot Call of Cthulhu game that came out beautifully last month and I have gone down the path of formalizing my upcoming adventures, for posterity's sake of nothing else.I decided that since I had a smattering of experience now, I should probably sit down with the experts and chat about how to write an adventure for roleplaying games and since I have a podcast designed for just such a topic, here you go.On this episode Mike, Christina and I are going to talk about writing an adventure for roleplaying games. The basics, structure, format, and of course the does and don'ts.Christina, Do you remember the first time you sat down and officially created a new adventure? And was it a formal process or more informal?[Kick to Christina]Mike, what about you? First Adventure?[Kick to Mike]

With ICE operations underway in Minneapolis and across the U.S., this episode asks a timely question: what would our favorite superheroes do? Matthew and Jessica Plummer explore how characters like Superman, Captain America, the Punisher, and the X-Men might respond to immigration enforcement, state violence, and mass deportations. From Superman's roots as an undocumented immigrant to Captain America's loyalty to ideals over governments, the conversation examines whether superheroes can ever truly be apolitical—and what justice means when the law itself causes harm. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Of Monsters and Mushrooms, Ch. 13 (book 1 NEW) ep. 813 A Really Dumb Idea NOTE: This is a rewrite of book 1. Originally, 'Of Monsters and Mushrooms' was supposed to be a multi-part short story that transformed halfway through into a novel. This left the plot (and the voice acting, to be honest) lacking. We decided to go back and completely rewrite book one to fix any plot holes and bring the quality in line with the rest of the series. Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- Hi there! My name is Chris Herron and I'm an audiobook narrator. In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors.
