When Three Men and a Baby opened on 25th November 1987, few could have predicted that a low-budget remake of a French comedy, shot in Toronto, starring two television actors, a comedy star and a baby girl, would become the highest-grossing film of the year in the US and a genuine turning point in Hollywood history. Yet that is precisely what it did.The film arrived at a specific cultural inflection point. More women were entering the workforce, the feminist movement was reshaping assumptions about domestic labour, and the recession of the early eighties had nudged more fathers into caregiving roles. Against that backdrop, watching Tom Selleck's broad-shouldered leading man coo helplessly over a baby carried real comic charge, and tapped into something the culture was quietly working through: what modern fatherhood might actually look like. But the film's off-screen legacy is arguably more significant than anything on it. Disney in 1983 had nearly gone bankrupt on the catastrophic failure of The Black Cauldron. The creation of Touchstone Pictures and its low-budget, high-concept adult comedies was the rescue plan. Three Men and a Baby was its greatest proof of concept: the studio's first ever $100 million domestic grosser, crowning Disney as the number one studio in Hollywood by the end of 1987. The revenue that film and its Touchstone stablemates generated bought the animation department enough time, talent, and resources to complete The Little Mermaid two years later, and triggered the Disney Renaissance.A film about three hapless bachelors and an abandoned baby, made cheaply and quietly in Canada, may be one of the most consequential comedies Hollywood ever produced.Support Verbal DioramaLoved this episode? Erik Aarts, senior fixed income strategist at Touchstone Investments, says the last few weeks have shown a disconnect between stock and bond markets, with the bond markets getting particularly cautious while stocks have raced back to record highs. What the bond market is worried about, Aarts says, is that higher oil prices will bleed into another round of higher inflation. ... At its base case, that's why yields are up today." Aarts also discusses how high-yield bonds are not living so much up to their label as "junk bonds," and that much of that high-risk exposure has moved to or stayed in private credit markets, changing the risk-reward profile of high-yield bonds and making them more attractive than other categories now. For his ETF of the Week, Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, goes in an unusual direction, picking an emerging markets sovereign debt fund that gets poor grade from Morningstar but that Rosenblth says fits the bill for a growing group of investors looking for overseas bond exposure that's tied to the dollar. Wall Street veteran Anthony Gallea, chief executive at Working Profit and publisher of the Working Profit Investment Letter, adds the twist of finding a catalyst to a Benjamin Graham-Warren Buffett style of value investing. In the Market Call, Gallea discusses how that works and where he sees potential catalysts now.

I'm excited to welcome Dr. Peter Osborne for the second part of a two-part series. Last week, we explored the truth about grains. Today, in Part Two, we tackle something more hidden and potentially far more devastating. Dr. Osborne has been working on a documentary called Mold Jacked, where he reveals how mold can steal your health, your hope, and your wealth, as well as common building mistakes that make it all too easy for these problems to take hold. How to reduce your exposure to mold in your home Track humidity levels in each room to catch problems before they escalate Keep indoor humidity consistently below the danger Investigate sudden or unusual humidity changes Bio: Dr. Peter Osborne Dr. Peter Osborne is one of the world's most sought-after alternative and nutritional experts. He is the founder of the Gluten-Free Society, the world's #1 resource for all things gluten. He has been featured in or on Fox News, CBS, PBS, New York Post, US News, Muscle & Fitness Hers, The Journal of Gluten Sensitivity, and many other nationally recognized publications. And most recently, he has been working on a special project, a mold documentary called Mold Jacked. In this episode: How mold can outcompete gluten in driving symptoms Why mold illness is far more complex than a simple allergy Three ways in which mold can affect the body, and why most people only hear about allergies How invisible toxins in the air can affect your body Why some people suddenly react to everything after mold exposure The connection between mold, immune dysfunction, and gut disruption Why some homes look perfectly clean, but still make people sick Common construction mistakes that can set the stage for mold problems Links and Resources: Guest Social Media Links: Instagram YouTube Mold Jacked Gluten Free Society Relative Links for This Show: Sinus Support https://yourlongevityblueprint.com/product/glutathione-60-ct/ Use code BIND to get 10% off ENVIROBIND Follow Your Longevity Blueprint On Instagram| Facebook| Twitter| YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray On Facebook| Instagram| Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast production by Team Podcast
Welcome to Episode 328 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we discuss this and all of our podcast episodes. This week we start are continuing our series reviewing Cicero's "Academic Questions" from an Epicurean perspective. We are focusing first on what is referred to as Book One, which provides an overview of the issues that split Plato's Academy and gives us an overview of the philosophical issues being dealt with at the time of Epicurus. This week will focus on the ending of Section 8.Our text will come fromCicero - Academic Questions - Yonge We'll likely stick with Yonge primarily, but we'll also refer to the Rackam translation here:Cicero On Nature Of Gods Academica Loeb Rackham : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet ArchiveQuoteVIII.The third part of philosophy, which is next in order, being conversant about reason and discussion, was thus handled by both schools. They said that, although it originated in the senses, still the power of judging of the truth was not in the senses. They insisted upon it that intellect was the judge of things. They thought that the only thing deserving of belief, because it alone discerned that which was always simple and uniform, and which perceived its real character. This they call idea, having already received this name from Plato; and we properly entitle it species. But they thought that all the senses were dull and slow, and that they did not by any means perceive those things which appeared subjected to the senses; which were either so small as to be unable to come under the notice of sense, or so moveable and rapid that none of them was ever one consistent thing, nor even the same thing, because everything was in a continual state of transition and disappearance. And therefore they called all this division of things one resting wholly on opinion. But they thought that science had no existence anywhere except in the notions and reasonings of the mind; on which account they approved of the definitions of things, and employed them on everything which was brought under discussion. The explanation of words also was approved of — that is to say, the explanation of the cause why everything was named as it was; and that they called etymology. Afterwards they used arguments, and, as it were, marks of things, for the proof and conclusion of what they wished to have explained; in which the whole system of dialectics — that is to say, of an oration brought to its conclusion by ratiocination, was handed down. And to this there was added, as a kind of second part, the oratorical power of speaking, which consists in developing a continued discourse, composed in a manner adapted to produce conviction.
I'm excited to welcome Dr. Peter Osborne for a two-part series. Most of us grew up hearing that whole grains are good for us. But what if that's wrong? Today, in Part One, Dr. Osborne breaks down how his book, No Grain No Pain, challenges almost everything we've been told about healthy eating. He clarifies what grains are actually doing inside our body, and why he believes they're foundational to many chronic illnesses. Tips to reduce immune reactions from grains and gluten Track your reactions and consider eliminating all grains if your symptoms persist on a standard gluten-free diet Limit your use of medications that erode the gut lining Address nutrient deficiencies and chemical exposure Change your diet and lifestyle instead of relying on medications Bio: Dr. Peter Osborne Dr. Peter Osborne is one of the most sought-after alternative and nutritional experts in the world. Here's a warning to parents from Union University's Phil Davignon. In a Touchstone article on increased secularization, he says we should be concerned about the influence of media content on our kids, but at the same time we let our kids watch all kinds of things online. He writes, “It is an open secret that the design for these apps relies on the same principles as casinos do. Psychologists suggest that using the language of addiction is no mere metaphor, since apps such as TikTok efficiently deliver a dopamine hit, leaving people craving more. Christian parents may prefer content-neutral social media to films with foul language, but doing so fails to recognize that form matters. Christians are people of the Word. To love God means to cultivate a mind that attends to God's presence in the Word of Scripture and the Logos of Creation. The TikTok generation is losing the capability to attend to anything of substance, as their minds become accustomed to a steady stream of online diversions.”

22-year-old Zion crusher Connor Baty on first ascents, rope soloing the Triple Wall in 12 hours, and why he climbs without sponsors. Kora FA, Towers of the Virgin, and living the unsponsored dream.Today's guest is 22-year-old silent crusher from Zion, Connor Baty. Connor has been climbing since he was 8 years old, with key early development as a trad climber at Garden of the Gods in Colorado—a notoriously chossy area with soft, loose sandstone. Since then he quickly progressed through the grades, leveling out around the 5.13 range. He then took that knowledge and merged it with his true passion: adventure. Connor has been quietly building a reputation as a cutting-edge first ascensionist and endurance linkup climber. Connor was the partner to our previous guest James Barrow for the Complete Tower of the Virgin Traverse. They also established a new 5.12+ multipitch route in Zion, called Kora. Connor has climbed Time Wave Zero down in Potrero car to car in 5 hours and most recently he's claimed the rope solo speed record of the Zion Triple Wall—linking Touchstone, Moonlight Buttress, and Prodigal Son in a blistering 12 hours. Needless to say Connor is a crusher. He could easily seek out sponsorships at the level he is climbing. But as we learn in our conversation, Connor has zero interest in self-promotion. For him it's all about personal progress, adventure, and living the life he has now to the fullest. He even has groundbreaking pursuits outside of climbing and is currently attempting to navigate the Colorado River from source to sea. What I found most interesting about our conversation is how well-spoken, composed, and level-headed Connor is as a human and a climber. Back when I was 22 I could not say the same thing about myself. I really felt the stoke and energy from Connor in our conversation and I'm happy to be sharing it with you now.Watch the full episode on Youtube---Thanks to our sponsors!LIVSN DesignsCheckout their Ecotrek Trail Pants HereUse Code "TCM15" At Checkout for an extra 15% OFF Your OrderHot Chillys Performance Base LayersCheckout their Micro Elite Chamois Base Layer Systems HereUse Code "TCM15" At Checkout for 15% OFF Your OrderGet Access to Exclusive Episodes, Unlock Ad-Free Podcast, & MORE!---ResourcesConor's IG

As a little kid, I always slept terribly on Christmas eve. I'd try and go to bed early. I'd tell myself that the sooner I went to sleep, the sooner I'd wake on Christmas morning. But sure as anything I'd be up all night, listening for any sound of activity on the roof. Together with my three little brothers and sisters, we'd be desperate for mum and dad to throw open our bedroom doors at first light, and we'd scramble down to our spindly-and-slightly-off-centred Christmas tree to see if Dad's old football socks had been attended to by Santa. I suspect this Christmas eve will be another poor sleep. Not because I'll be excitedly listening for the sound of shuffling reindeer on corrugated iron, but because it's my first Christmas morning with our ten-month-old son. We're taking both our boys to their cousins' place. Five kids. Average age: four-and-a-half. Our eldest is already fizzing. Our baby will have absolutely no idea what's going on but will sure as anything wake up a minimum of three times in the night to demand cuddles and a feed. Christmas is a kind of touchstone for our family. Like many Kiwi families, it's the one time of year when all of us (or at least as many of us as possible) are in one place at the same time. Weddings, funerals and Christmas are the only occasions we're all together. And Christmas is the only regular date. As a child you never think of this stuff, but as you grow older you are gently confronted by the reality that for better or worse, the numbers in the room change. The grandparents whom I shared Christmas day with as a little boy are no longer with us, no longer sitting on the couch, sipping their coffees and wryly commentating as the kids tear into the wrapping paper. Granny was a very active woman. Every Christmas morning after we'd stuffed ourselves with chocolates and junk, she'd lead a brisk stroll through the neighbourhood as we worked up an appetite for lunch. Dad and my grandad would stay at home and race through a cryptic crossword. Now it's different. For the kids it's more or less the same. All magic. A whirlwind. A blur. But for the rest of us, a new baby just reinforces our awareness of having stepped up a generation. Where once I was struggling to sleep through the night on Christmas Eve, now it's my boys and their cousins. My parents have become the grandparents sitting on the couch, sipping their coffees, wryly commentating proceedings. My siblings have become the parents, the aunts and uncles. People who once were there, are not. New, excited little bodies have taken their place. There's sadness in it. But there's something quite beautiful about it too, placing yourself in a generational context like that. It's a circle of life thing. It's funny that it comes at Christmas. Other cultures and religions probably have many more of these moments. But we're a bit short on touchstone traditions. For me at least, Christmas is a short little window every year where the busy lives in my family are about as aligned as they're going to be. It's a touchstone where if you want to, you can step back and observe what's changed in the family. My son's first Christmas will mean seeing myself in a slightly different light… not as a kid, or a gift-giver, or someone setting stocking sunder the tree, but as a bridge between different generations of the same family, hoping the spirit of these traditions will continue for many years to come. It's our fourth episode of the increasingly-inaccurately-titled Patreon Request "Month" 2025, and in the longest official episode of this podcast to date, the randomizer is going all the way back to 1988 to pick ArthurCrane's request for, quite simply, one of the greatest cinematic triumphs of all time, a tour-de-force of animation, live action and pre-CGI special effects wizardry, wrapped up in a still-relevant metaphorical fable about civil rights and gentrification set in an impossible fantasy world that combines a gritty film noir aesthetic with off-the-wall cartoon zaniness. Directed by future Oscar-winning blockbuster visionary Robert Zemeckis at the peak of his powers, with animation directed by often-underappreciated genius Richard Williams, and representing a Disney studio with new management eager to swing for the fences and conquer the world, this masterpiece was truly a once-in-a-lifetime perfect melding of artistry, ambition and anarchy. And granted, the whole project was blown out of the water just a few years later by the even greater achievement that was Ralph Bakshi's Cool World, but this movie was still pretty darn swell too. Pat and Jeff complete their two-part podcast on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's The Cost of Discipleship. In this episode, they talk about the importance of faith with obedience and obedience with faith, or as Bonhoeffer writes, “Only those who obey can believe, and only those who believe can obey" (Bonhoeffer, Dietrich. The Cost of Discipleship (p. 70). Touchstone. Kindle Edition). The problem with being obedient to Jesus for most of us is, as Pat says, "we want a savior, but we don't want a Lord. In other words, we want to be saved, but we don't want to be told what to do. Note: The opinions expressed in this podcast are those of Pat Barry and Jeff Quinto and may not reflect the opinions of the Bethel Bible Series or Bethel Lutheran Church. Crit Thomas, global market strategist at Touchstone Investments says the market can move higher — though with a path that is more bumpy — and the economy can avoid recession, but he also notes that the market is particularly hard to read because current conditions are dramatically different than many past situations. He cites a lot of reasons — from index concentration to fallout from the pandemic — for why looking back at market data seldom yields accurate forecasting right now. Thomas does expect a market slowdown, as earnings have been impressive but growth has been muted, which should make for slower markets ahead. Sarah Wolfe, senior economist and strategist for thematic and macro investing at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management — the chairperson of the Economic Policy Survey for the National Association for Business Economics — discusses the NABE survey released today, which showed a record number of economists view current economic policy as too stimulative. The economists viewed tariffs as the biggest long-term obstacle to growth rather than a stimulator for economic activity, and they also see recession coming into focus in the long-term, noting that current conditions have backed off any downturn to where economists now don't expect to see one until late in 2026 or in 2027. Kyle Guske, investment analyst at New Constructs, puts Five9 back in the Danger Zone because the company has fallen back into the territory of a "zombie stock," effectively due to run out of money in the next two years. Guske makes a case that the stock — currently valued at roughly $28 a share — is worth maybe six bucks, though he makes it clear he could make a case for it to go to zero. Plus, Dan Skubiz, chief investment officer and senior portfolio manager at F/m Investments, talks small-cap stocks in the Money Life Market Call.

Evolutionary biologists have attempted in a multitude of different ways to genetically alter a species of fruit fly in an attempt to create some kind of new species. But their efforts have not yielded the desired results. In addition, contemporary discoveries pertaining to our own human genetic make up have brought a significant challenge to the reigning orthodoxy of Neo-Darwinian evolution. Naturalists are bereft of any kind of explanation regarding from where the information in the genome has come or how nature on its own could create such specified and complex information. This week on the Profile we wrap up Daniel Ray's informal conversation with Discovery Institute fellow Dr. Paul Nelson. Paul discusses these and other philosophical and theological implications of Darwin's groundbreaking theory for us today. Paul Nelson, PhD, Senior Fellow, Center for Science and Culture, is an Adjunct Professor in the Master of Arts Program in Science & Religion at Biola University. He received his PhD in the philosophy of biology and evolutionary theory from the University of Chicago, and he lectures frequently at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Europe. His scholarly articles have appeared in journals such as Biology & Philosophy, BIO-Complexity, Zygon, Rhetoric and Public Affairs, and Touchstone, and his book chapters have appeared in the anthologies Mere Creation (Intervarsity Press), Signs of Intelligence (Brazos), Intelligent Design Creationism and Its Critics (MIT Press), Darwin, Design, Public Education (Michigan State University Press), and Next Generation Systematics (Cambridge University Press). This unique festival brings to life a selection of original one-act plays written by local elementary and middle school students—performed onstage by professional actors and community volunteers. The Young Playwrights' Lab began more than 20 years ago as an after-school program designed to foster literacy, confidence, and creative expression. Today, it's impacted over 2,000 students and remains one of the most joyful, collaborative, and heartfelt nights of theater in the region. You get mad scientists, Greek gods, talking sharks—and themes that hit surprisingly deep. Mary Wright, who helped launch the program more than two decades ago, describes the festival as “a window into what kids care about right now.” With themes ranging from friendship and family to bullying and climate action, the work is wildly imaginative and undeniably heartfelt. Touchstone's Young Playwrights' Lab uses improv games, writing exercises, and group collaboration to help students develop their own one-act plays. Each year, a handful of these are selected and professionally staged as part of the festival. Krista Metter, who made her debut in last year's production as a scene-stealing octopus, shares how being part of the cast made her feel “like a kid again”—and how the program builds deep community ties by giving young voices a real spotlight. “It's not just a performance,” says Mary. “It's a celebration. A party. And the kids are at the center of it all.” With over 100 plays written this year alone and countless community members stepping in to help with directing, costumes, and production—this event has become one of the Lehigh Valley's most treasured arts traditions. This week, we're staying in Southern California, where the workers of Touchstone Climbing Gym in Los Angeles have been negotiating their first contract with their employer. Touchstone Climbing, a regional climbing gym with over a dozen locations in California, experienced a wave of unionization in its Los Angeles locations early last year. The successful campaign with Workers United created a wall-to-wall union at each of the company's five locations in the Los Angeles area. Members of the LA-based gym are often themselves union members, and the response from the climbing community has been overwhelmingly positive. However, workers have been navigating a frustrating negotiation in order to reach an agreement on a first contract. Chief among workers' demands is better communications, higher safety standards, and better pay. With me today to discuss their unionization, and their negotiations are Ryan Barkauskas, PT desk staff at The Post in Pasadena and Jess Kim, Former Desk Staff at the Post in Pasadena, now FT Workers United organizer. In this podcast, Eckhart talks about how difficult life circumstances often trigger awakening. Whether it's a life-threatening disease, loss of a loved one or break up of a marriage he says pain is the touchstone to all spiritual growth. Eckhart says many people eventually become grateful for their problems because without them they would not evolve. Eckhart also describes it as liberation from the burden of oneself. When the hard shell of the ego cracks open, we discover a realm of consciousness we haven't known before. Want more podcasts from OWN?
