In this episode, Jeff and Becky welcome Dave Mullins of Bee Great, based in Churubusco, Indiana. Dave shares how a hobby with his father in 2014 grew into a dynamic beekeeping business now managing 150 hives, a thriving retail store, and a diverse line of honey and bee-inspired products. From flavored honeys and goat milk soaps to international exports, Bee Great has become a model of creativity and adaptability in the beekeeping world . Dave describes his journey from professor to full-time beekeeper and entrepreneur, offering candid insights into product development, branding, and customer service. He discusses lessons learned at farmers markets, the importance of transparency in labeling, and how community support during the COVID pandemic helped sustain and grow the business. He also reflects on balancing innovation—like Cajun and wasabi hot honey—with the challenges of scaling responsibly while staying true to a family-centered mission. Listeners will find inspiration in Dave's story of persistence, ingenuity, and passion for bees. His experiences highlight the possibilities—and realities—of turning beekeeping into a business while still keeping the heart of the practice rooted in service, education, and connection. In this episode, Jeff and Becky welcome Indiana beekeeper Dave McComb to share his journey from inheriting one defensive hive in 2018 to managing over 100 colonies, producing honey, nucs, and queens with remarkable success. Dave explains how he quickly immersed himself in beekeeping education, adopted single-deep hive management, and built an operation known for exceptionally low winter losses. Beyond management techniques, Dave opens up about his business growth, from building a website and learning social media outreach to creating innovative honey products—like single-serve honey packets for athletes, inspired by his years as a competitive cyclist. He also discusses the value of honey shows, where his award-winning creamed honey has earned recognition at the state, national, and ABF levels. Whether you're curious about improving colony survival, queen management, or expanding your beekeeping into a thriving sideline business, Dave's story is full of inspiration and practical takeaways. Crescent Church Sunday Evening Service - 24th August 2025
We are addressing what Yahweh says about Himself and thosein His household not neglecting the parts of His character and nature that do not fit the modern fictions that have been told about Him. Yes, God is agape love, and He is full of mercy and in that mercy, He extends His grace to all, especially to those in His household. But His grace is an extension of His identity as the I AM—the provider of all we need all the time. Those who come to Him must receive Him for who He is, theultimate source of all. And this is the very reason that the source matters, the source is everything! Those who are bent on doing things for themselves simply do not know Him as theI AM. Download Transcript

Dr. Lewis Bartlett returns to Beekeeping Today Podcast to share the latest science on honey bee health, pest management, and the evolving challenges beekeepers face worldwide. In this wide-ranging conversation, Lewis dives into how shifting climates, global trade, and emerging pests are reshaping the landscape for beekeeping. He explores the role of integrated pest management, the importance of genetic diversity in colonies, and why maintaining flexibility is essential for long-term success. A highlight of the discussion focuses on the yellow-legged hornet — a newly arrived invasive predator in the U.S. Lewis explains its biology, how it differs from the Asian giant hornet, and what early detection efforts are underway to prevent it from establishing. He emphasizes the need for beekeeper vigilance and public reporting to help slow its spread before it becomes a permanent threat to honey bees and native pollinators. Listeners will also gain insights into how research priorities are shifting in response to these challenges, and how beekeepers can take actionable steps today to prepare for tomorrow's realities. In this week's episode, Jeff and Becky welcome back fourth-generation commercial beekeeper John Miller for a candid conversation about the challenges—and potential—facing the beekeeping industry today. With his decades of experience and generational insight, John doesn't hold back on concerns about low honey prices, rising input costs, invasive pests like tropilaelaps, and the closure of critical research facilities like USDA's Beltsville Bee Lab. John offers a front-line view of what it means to be a commercial beekeeper in 2025 and why he describes the current moment as “swimming with piranha.” He also speaks passionately about the importance of collaboration across beekeeper “silos”—commercial, sideliner, and hobbyist alike—and about the hope he sees in new leadership, community engagement, and research-backed innovation through organizations like Project Apis m. Whether you manage a few colonies or a few thousand, this episode offers a sobering but motivating reminder of the shared challenges beekeepers face—and why now is the time to come together and act. We've finally arrived at the end. Back in April, we started watching the landmark television show Twin Peaks (first viewings for both Reed and Nathan). In May, we began to make our way through the feature films of the late David Lynch. For the next three months, we would dive deep into Lynch's work. We debated, we pondered, we puzzled, we cheered, and we often simply sat in a certain degree of anxious wonder. From Eraserhead to The Straight Story, from Lost Highway to Mulholland Drive, and all the way through the landscape of Twin Peaks... we catalogued a master at work.So now, we reflect on our key takeaways. We examine which moments and characters stayed with us, the good, the bad, and the utterly wild. We also rank our personal selections for each of the feature films. It's a chance to breathe, a chance to unwind, and a chance to debrief. If you've been with us through this whole journey, let us know your thoughts. If you're just checking us out, let this episode serve as a primer for some of the observations and conversations over the past three months.Either way, we hope you enjoy it. Tai Shani talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work.Shani makes sculpture and installations, paintings, performances and films, underpinned by writing that is experimental in approach and singular in its voice. Shani, who was was born in 1976 in London, where she lives and works today, creates bodies of work that evolve and expand across her diverse media, often over several years. They take particular cultural forms, historical events or theoretical ideas as a cornerstone in creating worlds that are at once fantastical and utopian, yet shot through with contemporary political and social ideas and convictions. Tai's vision is fecund and colourful, and her aesthetic enters the sphere of the epic, the sublime and the gothic. She reflects with particular profundity on how the modes in which she engages have been historically gendered, and reimagines them for today's audiences. She reflects on writing as the cornerstone of her work, how her political outlook has shifted through her various projects, reflects on the revolutionary possibilities of art in a time of extreme right wing politics, and her enduring ambitions for her own work: “I still want to split the atom.” She discusses the early impact of seeing Ophelia by John Everett Millais, and how it prompted in her a desire “to be able to move someone through an act of creativity”. She recalls seeing Valie Export at Camden Art Centre and how it “completely blew my mind, and nothing was the same afterwards”. She describes the deeply personal circumstances behind Epilogue, a new work responding to Marcel Duchamp's Étant Donnés. She reflects on the dramatic impact on her of writers including Christine de Pizan, Amy Hollywood and Octavia Butler, and of filmmakers including David Lynch and Carl Dreyer. Plus, she gives insights into life in the studio, and answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: “What is art for?”Tai Shani: The Spell or The Dream, Somerset House, 8 August-14 September; Tai Shani, Gathering, London, 26 September–8 November. Shani has a work in Dulwich Picture Gallery in London's new sculpture park which is unveiled as part of an opening weekend on 6-7 September; her sculpture for the High Line in New York will remain on view until March 2026.What is art for? Contemporary artists on their inspirations, influences and disciplines, by Ben Luke, featuring illustrated, edited versions of 25 artist interviews drawn from the A brush with… podcast series, along with new writings, published by HENI on 2 September (US) and 4 September (UK). Late summer brings not just honey harvests but also the return of yellow jackets. For many beekeepers, their sudden appearance can spark concern—or outright dread—around the bee yard. In this episode, Jeff and Becky sit down with Dr. Richard Zack, professor of entomology at Washington State University, to unpack the truth about these misunderstood wasps. Rich shares fascinating insights into yellow jacket biology, their annual colony cycle, and why they turn up at apiaries during nectar dearth. He explains the differences between yellow jackets, wasps, hornets, and honey bees, and why their carnivorous diets can actually make them beneficial predators in many ecosystems. The conversation covers practical tips for beekeepers, including seasonal control strategies, entrance reduction, and why strong honey bee colonies can easily fend off these opportunistic scavengers. By the end, you may look at yellow jackets a little differently—as part of the natural balance rather than the enemy of your hives. The Guests are speechless and very skeptical. For a moment it seems that the Time Traveler has lost his memory but he recovers his composure on seeing the time machine. He guests leave, all still skeptical, except for the narrator, and the following day, he is the only person to return. The Time Traveler greets him happily with a camera in his hand, saying that if he would only wait for a 30 minutes, he will return with all of the proof he needs. The Narrator picks up the story 3 years later, saying that the Time Traveler never returned. He wonders where he could be, and hope that he is alright. All that is left of the Time Machine's voyage, are two strange little flowers that the narrator kept, proof that the human spirit of tenderness lives on.SEO Stuff that I don't want to do lol...One of the most influential pieces of fiction of all time, The Time Machine by H. G. Wells, sees a Victorian scientist send himself forward to the year 802,701 AD. He is delighted to find that suffering has been replaces by beauty and happiness, and a "new man", the Eloi, has descended from man. Science Fiction book, Sci-fi, Classic Literature

This is a critical look at our previous podcast episodes on VO2max training, and with hindsight provide new and additional context on those training recommendations, plus other effective ways to do VO2max training, with their coaching and contextual aspects. We investigate some instances of "VO2max blocks" in the scientific literature, reexamine the 30/15s paper, and discuss additional factors that confound the interpretation of those and other published results before considering how we can use that information to our advantage when training.

In this episode, Jeff and Becky speak with Dr. Steve Pernal, research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, about his team's recent work monitoring Varroa destructor populations and treatment efficacy across Canada. As varroa continues to be the leading driver of colony mortality, Steve and his colleagues are collecting long-term data on mite levels, reinfestation rates, and treatment performance across a wide range of beekeeping operations. Steve shares insights from national monitoring efforts, including surprising findings on how quickly mites can rebound after treatment and the complexities of interpreting mite counts in commercial yards. The conversation covers regional differences in resistance development, what's known (and unknown) about reinfestation, and why simply applying treatments may no longer be enough to manage mites sustainably. This episode offers a grounded, research-informed look at varroa management—what's working, where the gaps are, and what Canadian researchers are doing to equip beekeepers with better tools and knowledge. Whether you run a few hives or a thousand, you'll walk away with fresh insights on what to watch for in your own operation. In this episode, Jeff and Becky welcome researchers Dr. Orley “Chip” Taylor and Dr. Gard Otis to discuss their fascinating work on drone congregation areas (DCAs)—the mysterious gathering points where honey bee drones meet virgin queens for mating. The conversation explores how DCAs are located, the behavioral cues that guide drones, and what these sites can tell us about colony genetics, health, and evolution. Drawing from decades of fieldwork and scientific inquiry, Chip and Gard share insights into how these high-stakes mating events unfold, what makes a DCA stable over time, and why understanding these areas is important for breeders and beekeepers alike. They also reflect on the challenges of observing this elusive part of the honey bee life cycle and share stories from their field studies across North America and beyond. This episode offers a rare window into a little-understood but critical aspect of honey bee biology. Whether you're a backyard beekeeper curious about queen mating or a researcher interested in honey bee genetics, this conversation deepens our understanding of what happens when drones take flight. After the ApocalypseA pandemic survival storySeason five, Epilogue...This is an epilogue to the whole series to tie up loose ends and character arcs. It has four scenes that jump forward in time. ...It had been four weeks since the battle. It had taken that long to decontaminate the DC from the drug filled drone spray. Still, Mags eyed her coffee suspiciously. “It should be fine.” Brent reassured her, “We sprayed enough water on this place in the last few weeks to melt an iceberg.”“I know.” She said, “I just don't want to get dosed. I don't have time in my schedule for an acid trip.” She looked at him and made a vague circular gesture that seemed to include the whole world. “We've got so much to do.”...Buy a book -> https://booklocker.com/books/13731.htmlWebsite -> http://www.oldmanapocalypse.com Buy me Coffee -> https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cyktrussellSubscribe page on Acast -> https://plus.acast.com/s/after-the-apocalypsePodcast on Acast -> https://shows.acast.com/after-the-apocalypseFacebook group -> https://www.facebook.com/groups/oldmanapocalypseYouTube -> https://www.youtube.com/@cyktrussellPatreon to support the show -> https://www.patreon.com/AftertheApocalypseMerch Store -> https://www.teepublic.com/stores/after-the-apocalypse Twitter -> cyktrussell@twitter.comRunRunLiveWebsite -> https://www.runrunlive.comPodcast on Acast -> https://shows.acast.com/runrunlive Hosted on Acast. BGMania B-Sides #27 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bedroth is diving deep into Brain Lord, a lesser-known action RPG developed by Produce! and published by Enix for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1994. While Brain Lord may not have reached the same heights of popularity as some of its Enix brethren, its soundtrack, composed by Masanao Akahori, offers a surprisingly rich and varied experience that deserves more recognition. From somber dungeon melodies to upbeat overworld themes, this score captures the tone of the game's puzzle-heavy journey with nuance and charm. In 1973, two seemingly unrelated murders in Toronto leave families shattered and the public searching for answers. Detectives chase every lead, but the case goes cold. Decades later, Detective Sergeant Steve reopens the investigation, armed with advanced DNA technology. But solving this case isn't just about science—it requires earning the trust of a remote Indigenous community and holding onto the hope that justice can finally be served. Detective Sergeant Steve is a seasoned investigator with 28 years of service in the Toronto Police Service, where he currently leads the Homicide Cold Case Unit—home to the largest caseload of unsolved cases in Canada. In addition to overseeing the Cold Case Unit, Steve also manages the Forensic Video Unit and played a key role in the establishment of the Missing Persons Unit, guiding its development from the ground up.Throughout his distinguished career, Steve has held various positions in specialized units, including the Drug Squad, Major Crime Unit, Major Projects, ROPE (Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement) Squad, and the Hold Up Squad. Notably, while in the Hold Up Squad, he was instrumental in solving the high-profile multi-national bank robbery series known as the "Vaulter Bandit." A graduate of Brock University, Steve holds a major in Political Science and a minor in Business Entrepreneurship. His early career interests in law enforcement were sparked by his work with the Canada Border Services Agency during his time at university.
