The Minnesota Honey Producers Association has a whole bunch of good things going for them and in this episode we learn about their new Honey Ambassador Program (notice we didn't say Honey Queen Program), plus the state wide habitat program. First off, we talk with Becky Masterson, who've we had as a guest on the podcast in the past. Rebecca is with the University of Minnesota Bee lab and is part of the Bee Squad which has been very involved in both of these programs, working to get people together to work together to work better at producing habitat.  We also talk with Josh Munoz, a Marine veteran and is the first MHPA Honey Bee Ambassador promoting honey and beekeeping in the state. Josh also runs the Minnesota Veterans Bee Program. He teaches agriculture in a St. Paul high school focusing a lot on habitat and honey bees and is working to shape high school ag curriculum. Also on today's episode, we talk with Dan Whitney, past Minnesota Honey Producers President and a commercial honey producer, who spends a good amount of time in Texas running over 2000 colonies, and produces nucs and queens each spring. Dan was instrumental in getting the Ambassador program going and in very active in the new Minnesota Habitat Program.  All told, 3 very active people getting a lot of good work done to better Minnesota for bees, beekeepers and beekeeping. Listen today! Also in today's episode, Ed Colby returns with a story from his book, “A Beekeeper's Life: Tales of a Beekeeper." In this week's episode, we visit with Cliff Struhl about his thoughts on better ways to keep bees than is generally done today (and the past 170 years). Cliff is owner of Bee Smart Designs and has produced several products that aim to reduce some of the stresses we apply when keeping bees in a standard wooden box. He starts with the boxes we use and compares them to the hollow trees bees prefer. He looks further at the insulation needs on both the walls and the top, the metal covers that get really hot in the summer, the entrances and the bottom boards. Basically, we keep bees in a very artificial environment, and as a result and the bees are extremely stressed. We have to be active managers so they can thrive. We also discuss the pragmatic approach for queen rearing, mating, purchasing queens, and overall genetics. Is pragmatic beekeeping the same as ‘natural beekeeping'? We find out where there may be differences. He sums this all up by stating that beekeeping requires thoughtful input from the beekeeper since the bees are not able to fend for themselves when kept in the artificial environment we normally provide. Parsha Talk, with Rabbis Eliot Malomet, Barry Chesler and Jeremy Kalmanofsky. Parashat Nitzavim [Deut. 29:9-30:20] is the last parashah of 5782, and the third from the end of the weekly readings [V-zot Ha-b'rakhah (Deut. 33:1-34:12), the last parashah, is read on the morning of Simchat Torah (this year, Tuesday, October 18, 2022)]. Nitzavim begins with the declaration that “You stand this day, all of you, before the Lord your God . . . to enter into the covenant of the Lord your God, which the Lord your God is concluding with you this day. . . “ (29:9-11 [NJPS]). The Torah goes on to elaborate, “I make this covenant . . . not with you alone, but both with those who are standing here with us this day before the Lord our God and with those who are not with us here this day (29:13-14). This led us to a discussion of which looms larger in our imagination, the Revelation at Sinai or the Coveant Renewal in the plains of Moab. We managed to mention, and discuss, the last verse of the parashah as well, which also serves as a coda to this section of Deuteronomy. Professor Jeffrey Tigay labels the remaining 4 chapters [Va-yelekh, Ha'azinu, and Ve-zot Ha-b'rakhah] as an Epilogue, describing Moses' Last Days. With best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and Shanah Tovah!

It's real. It's present. We hope that this has been a space where pastors and clergy will feel seen and known. For those of you who are not pastors but perhaps are part of a faith community or congregation, we hope these conversations have given you a greater understanding and empathy for the leaders in your faith community, and prompt questions as to how we can support these faithful leaders.    What's next? On today's episode we are joined by professor, author and noted speaker Dr. Dewey Caron. Dewey is an active member of the Honey Bee Health Coalition where he helps with the creation and maintenance of the Coalition's Hive Management program. Today he joins us to talk about the just updated, Varroa Management Guide. Varroa management is a very serious problem for beekeepers around the world. Sadly, varroa was just found in Australia this year with devastating consequences as hundreds, if not thousands of colonies, have been destroyed in an attempt to eradicate the mite before it establishes a foothold on the last, varroa-free continent. The HBHC has published several useful tools for beekeepers to help them manage varroa to a level where the negative effects of varroa, such as the varroa associated viruses and diseases can be limited. This is includes varroa management videos, the Varroa Management Decision Tool, Commercial Beekeeper Case Studies, the Varroa Resistance and Testing Team and today's topic the Varroa Management Guide. The Management Guide explains the tested, practical, and effective methods to manage the mites in your colonies. Dewey talks with us about the updates, varroa and also talks about the latest edition of his book, “Honey Bee Biology and Beekeeping.” We hope you enjoy the episode. And, finally, we follow all three, the Cell, the Selected, separate but together. We cast our eyes forward to Revelation Day, its events and immediate aftermath. Further forward to the impending doom of the organization that brought them all together, and to the (by some accounts, suboptimal) prevention of that doom. The question of a second integration is answered, and likewise a public naming. We gaze, briefly, on the Traitor, the Inheritor, and the First Son. And then we settle our gaze on the story's terminus: the narrative eve of the Bleeding of the City, we find them where they are, and then we shut our eyes. The book's epilogue closes, and likewise the book itself. Naught for me to do now but pick up the next one. I love you all. Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye. [And to step out of Greta's skin for the final time: thank you, all of you, for joining me on this journey. This was my first time in the DM's chair and it was altogether so much more than I ever anticipated. Every one of you who found this worth listening to is precious to me. We follow, thereafter, the Angel, the Escort. Her final decision, the friction, the farewell. And then the next year. The birth of a mistake undone, the first steps of relocation and establishment of a trade, investigations into solving an ancient secret. Then, a long-avoided conversation, and then another (though the avoidance here is by another's hand), and then a threefold reorientation. The shade of a tree planted long ago is rediscovered in a sister's company, a thorny bargain is reached. A resting machine is called to action to mend a wound holding a sea hostage and six nomads are freed to wander no more. And then, finally, a visit from a flame left to linger in embers, a night of sputtered enkindling, a pair of seconds secured, and a settling in with eyes to a future most disasterous. Goodbye. David Barmon is owner of Epilogue LLC, a small-scale sawmill business just South of Portland Oregon. He co-owned Fiddlehead LLC, a Portland, Oregon-based landscape construction company for 15 years. David has milled hundreds of thousands of board feet of lumber and installed countless edible landscapes and rain gardens in the Portland area. In a former career, David spent almost a decade as a Japanese-qualified flight attendant for United Airlines. David has been a powerful advocate for the urban lumber movement over the last decade. He has successfully leveraged private industry, non-profit organizations, and government to push for transformational changes in the urban forestry system. In addition to his hands-on experience procuring, milling, and creating value-added products from urban lumber, David draws from a broad set of skills, including writing, public speaking, lobbying, small business ownership, non-profit management, and policy work. He is currently working on his first book, Wood From the City, the Urban Lumber Handbook. David has spoken at several conferences including Wood at Work (McGill University 2017 and University of Toronto 2018), the prestigious International Living Future Conference, TEDx Kelowna, and the Mid Atlantic Urban Wood Forum (Virginia Department of Forestry). David was the 2019 keynote speaker at Australia National University's first-ever urban lumber conference. David was named Sustainable Business Oregon's Emerging Leader in 2013. His work and ideas have been featured in many publications such as Oregon Public Broadcasting, Green Builder, Sunset, Dwell, and Residential Architect. In 2015 David helped pass legislation through the State of Oregon to fund the world's first urban lumber tree planting feasibility study. The study, called the Clackamas County Urban Lumber Pilot focused on how to intentionally plant, maintain and harvest urban trees for lumber. David is fascinated with the physical world and all of the amazing information our modern society is about to forget. He believes our religion, culture, cities, food, clothing, smartphones—basically everything—comes down to understanding plants and rocks. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/plantatrilliontrees/support

Mark Winston joins us on today's episode. Mark just retired from Simon Frazer University in British Columbia. For many years his research focused on honey bees, beekeeping and agriculture. For about a decade he was a regular contributor to Bee Culture magazine, where he explored the biology of honey bees, and the sociality of beekeepers. His writings include the books The Biology of The Honey Bee, Killer Bees, Nature Wars (his observations on agricultural pesticides), From Where I Sit: Essays on Bees, Beekeeping and Science, Travels in Genetically Modified Crops (his perspectives on genetically modified plants) and his two thoughtful observations of the relations of bees and man in Bee Time, Lessons From The Hive, and his last bee book, Listening To The Bees (how bees, people and society and people are alike). He took that level of thought from bees and applied it to people where he began working in his university's new Center For Dialogue. There he achieved wide recognition as a distinguished educator, consultant and communicator. Our talk with Mark looks back on his time in honey bee research, his books on bees and beekeepers and some of his newer work on communications. We hope you enjoy the episode. SEASON 2 FINALE We cover chapters 50 through the epilogue of Harrow the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir. These chapters are some of the most confounding and interesting chapters in the book. We learn a lot about Wake and both Gideons, John is murdered and then resurrected, Mercy is exploded, Augustine takes everyone for a dip in the river. Pyrrha is a thing now? And Harrow makes a choice which honestly we don't even really understand. Finally the epilogue is just one huge wtf. Just a warning - we're coming at this as people who have read the preview chapters of Nona that were released a few weeks ago.Music credit: Olivia K
