For the last “TrumpWatch with Jesse Lent” of 2017, we decided to revisit one of our favorite interviews, Jesse’s conversation with Kurt Andersen, the host of the Peabody Award-winning public radio program “Studio 360” and the co-author of the Trump parody novel “You Can't Spell America Without Me: The Really Tremendous Inside Story of My Fantastic First Year as President Donald J. Trump (A So-Called Parody).” Kurt co-wrote the book with America’s foremost impersonator of the President, Alec Baldwin. Since Jesse’s conversations with Alec and Kurt were aired in the same show, a good portion of the latter talk was omitted for time. In this episode of “TrumpWatch” on 99.5FM WBAI New York, we’re airing the rest of the Kurt Andersen interview for the first time. In it, Kurt discusses the collaboration process with Alec in greater detail, including the times the iconic actor remained in character as Trump, what the process of writing from the perspective of the President taught the “Studio 360” host about the way Trump thinks and what makes a truly great interview.

What goes into creating an iconic impression? Does assuming the personality of a subject, even to make fun of them, allow you any new insight into their way of thinking? On this week’s "TrumpWatch" on WBAI New York, host Jesse Lent speaks with Alec Baldwin whose impression of Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live,” both before and after the 2016 election, has become the definitive impression of the 45th President. In addition to discussing what it’s like to perform as someone he admittedly dislikes, Alec compares playing Trump to some of his other iconic roles. Jesse also speaks with Kurt Andersen, the host of “Studio 360” on Public Radio International, who co-authored a new Trump parody book with Alec, entitled “You Can't Spell America Without Me: The Really Tremendous Inside Story of My Fantastic First Year as President Donald J. Trump.”
