You can find show notes for this episode at https://transformingmission.org/091 “A leader is anyone who takes responsibility for finding the potential in people and processes, and who has the courage to develop that potential.” - Brené Brown From parents to spouses, from boardrooms to laundry rooms, from baseball diamonds to Starbucks coffee lines, from classrooms to courtrooms and everywhere in between, the world needs brave and daring leaders who not only have faith but follow Jesus - every day. In this episode, you'll hear three broad challenges of leading with courage. These include, but are not limited to, positional leadership, vicarious spirituality, and criticism "from the cheap seats." Be reminded, your purpose (Episode 088) and paying attention to God's presence (Episode 089) set the foundation for who you are as a leader. Said simply, who you are is how you lead. Add to these two foundational elements the importance of relationships (Episode 090) and the need for courageous, faithful leaders has never been more clear. DOWNLOAD THE TRANSFORMATION GUIDE The Four Skills of Courage If you decide you want to lead with courage, here's the good news: you can learn! There are four skills that contribute to courage. Each one teachable, measurable, and observable. Rumbling with Vulnerability You can't get to courage without rumbling with vulnerability. (Listen to Episodes 055 - 059 for a three-part series on rumbling with vulnerability and how to know if you're ready to rumble. See links at the bottom of the page. The tools for rumbling with vulnerability are varied. You'll need to set  intentions for the conversation and/or meeting. You'll also want to be clear about expectations. One additional tool we'll mention here is identifying the problem you're facing. Each one of these tools facilitate rumbling with vulnerability. Living From Your Values You may think to rumble with vulnerability is the only skill needed for courageous leadership. It's not. In addition, you'll need to get clear about your values (listen to Episode 076 as a starting point). Living from your values is about identifying the behaviors that embody your values and fail to embody your values. Braving Trust Third, is BRAVING Trust. BRAVING is an acronym for seven elements of trust. But, the most important thing to remember about trust is that trust and vulnerability are two sides of the same coin. You need trust to rumble with vulnerability and you need to rumble with vulnerability to brave trust. It's a stacking of the two that develop trust and create opportunities to rumble with vulnerability. Learning to Rise Finally, learning to rise is about recognizing there are going to be moments of failure and learning how to navigate the difficult, challenging moments of leadership with as much grace as possible. As people of faith, you might think of it this way: On Good Friday, the cross appeared to snuff out the life and legacy of Jesus. But on Sunday, the resurrection turned the cross inside out. The power of the resurrection is a new life. Learning to rise is about facing the challenges, the failure, the moments you've face-planted on a new initiative and realizing, it may be Friday, but Sunday is coming. Together, these four skills are needed for courageous leadership to unfold wherever you live, work, and play. To learn the skills of courageous leadership, you're invited to Dare to Lead, a series of workshops in Columbus, Ohio starting in January.
