Today, we're sharing an episode of the No Small Endeavor podcast. These days, our culture is marked by political unrest, polarization, and anxiety. Beauty and art feel like a luxury, or even a distraction. In a special series, No Small Endeavor is asking: What if art, beauty, and poetry are exactly what we need to face the crisis at hand? Can poetry help us protest, pray, lament, and even hope? Host Lee C. Camp talks to poets like Haleh Liza Gafori, a poet, musician, and acclaimed translator of the Persian poet Rumi; and Pádraig Ó Tuama, poet, theologian, and host of Poetry Unbound. Their conversations evoke thoughtfulness about how to fight for beauty in the current culture, and how to make it through the fires of our time together. In this episode, Lee talks to Joy Harjo, a musician, author, and three-term U.S. Poet Laureate. Camp and Harjo explore how poetry can act as a form of justice, a practice of self-development, and a tiny experiment in healing. You can listen to No Small Endeavor here. QUOTES FOR REFLECTION The madman jumped into their midst and pierced them with his eyes.“Whither is God?” he cried; “I will tell you.We have killed him—you and I. All of us are his murderers. But how did we do this? How could we drink up the sea?Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun?Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually?Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying, as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space?Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us?”~“The Parable of the Madman” by Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) “How much larger your life would be, if your self could become smaller in it.”~G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936), author and literary critic in Orthodoxy “For even creation reveals Him who formed it, and the very work made suggests Him who made it, and the world manifests Him who ordered it.”~Irenaeus (c.125-c.202), early church leader, in Against Heresies (II.9.1) “Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is allYe know on earth, and all ye need to know.” “A thing of beauty is a joy forever:Its loveliness increases; it will neverPass into nothingness; but still will keepA bower quiet for us, and a sleep…An endless fountain of immortal drink,Pouring unto us from the heaven's brink.”~John Keats (1795-1821) from “Ode to a Grecian Urn” and Endymion “Because the face of God is so lovely, my brothers and sisters, so beautiful, once you have seen it, nothing else can give you pleasure. It will give insatiable satisfaction of which we will never tire. We shall always be hungry and always have our fill.”~Augustine (354-430 A.D.), North African church leader and theologian “Glory is the beauty of God unveiled! Glory is the resplendent radiance of His power and His personality…. Glory is the external elegance of the internal excellencies of God. Glory is what you see and experience and feel when God goes public with His beauty!”~C. Samuel Storms (1951-present), theologian and authorSERMON PASSAGEPsalm 191 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. Isaiah 6 1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said:“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;the whole earth is full of his glory!” John 1 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 12 41 Isaiah said these things because he saw [Jesus's] glory and spoke of him. 42 Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. John 17 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed….24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.Leviticus 10 1 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them. 2 And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.'” And Aaron held his peace. 1 Corinthians 3 16 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you are that temple. Romans 118 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

In this episode of the Thinking Talmudist Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Tractate Baba Metzia 84a, focusing on a Talmudic discussion about Rabbi Yochanan's exceptional beauty and its spiritual implications. The episode delves into the concept of the evil eye, the influence of parental thoughts on conception, and the responsibility to use one's gifts thoughtfully. Key points include:Rabbi Yochanan's Beauty: Rabbi Yochanan claims to be the last of Jerusalem's beautiful people, described vividly: a silver goblet filled with pomegranate seeds, crowned with roses, and placed between sun and shade reflects a fraction of his radiance. The Talmud questions this, noting Rav Kahana's beauty resembled Rav Avohu's, which resembled Yaakov's, which resembled Adam's. Rabbi Yochanan's distinction was his beardless face, enhancing his radiant appearance.Mikvah Practice: Rabbi Yochanan sat at the women's mikvah entrance so that women, emerging from ritual immersion, would see him and retain his image, influencing their conception to produce beautiful, Torah-learned children. This mirrors Yaakov's use of streaked rods to influence sheep traits. Rabbi Wolbe defends this as a responsible use of his gift, not arrogance, citing his grandfather's teaching that knowing and using one's virtues is an obligation, akin to knowing one's wealth to give charity.Evil Eye Concerns: The sages question if Rabbi Yochanan feared the evil eye from displaying his beauty. He responds that, as a descendant of Yosef, he is immune, per Genesis 49:22 (“Yosef is a charming son, above the eye”) and 49:24 (likening Yosef's progeny to fish, hidden from the evil eye). Rabbi Wolbe explains the evil eye's real impact: flaunting wealth or beauty can cause jealousy, stress, or harm in others, affecting their relationships or finances.Practical Lessons: Rabbi Wolbe shares anecdotes to illustrate avoiding the evil eye: his father's choice of a modest Toyota Camry over a Lincoln Town Car to avoid neighbors' jealousy, and leaving a broken blinker light to deter envy. He recounts Marvy Finger's mentor, a wealthy man flying coach to avoid wasteful display, emphasizing humility and consideration for others' feelings.Broader Message: The episode underscores the responsibility to use God-given gifts (beauty, wealth) for positive impact while avoiding harm through jealousy. Rabbi Yochanan's actions aimed to inspire righteousness, not pride. Rabbi Wolbe urges mindfulness of how one's actions affect others, promoting sensitivity in a world prone to envy and comparison. The episode concludes with a blessing for a wonderful Shabbos and a call to share Torah content._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. What if the cure for our anxious, overconnected lives is right outside the door? In this deeply human conversation, Ruth Chou Simons—artist, author, and mom of six—joins Ginny to explore how beauty, especially in nature, becomes a real antidote to hurry, worry, and screen-saturated living. From Jesus' invitation to “consider the lilies” to the way wildflowers preach resilience, individuality, and dependence, Ruth shows how getting outside forms our souls as much as it strengthens our kids. You'll hear vivid stories: morning glories as a picture of friendships that ebb and bloom; the extra-beautiful columbine as a reminder not to shrink back; the ache of a changing home as children launch, and the bluebell pointing us toward a truer, lasting home. Ruth also shares the moment her son suffered a serious mountain-biking injury—and how she painted wildflowers in the ICU, choosing to shift her gaze from fear to the faithful Gardener. Together, she and Ginny talk about making unhurried lives in hurried times, giving our families “dosing and spacing” for wisdom, and packing a small “to-go” kit of tactile hobbies so we reach for creation, not just a screen, when life turns. Listen in if you're longing for a gentler rhythm, a sturdier hope, and a practical way to invite beauty into your ordinary days—starting with one walk, one flower, one moment of attention. His photos have sold for millions at auctions, he's an Officer of the Order of Canada, and his work has advanced photography as an art form through the use of staged scenes and large lightboxes. But before ever picking up a camera, Jeff was just a kid living in Vancouver trying to find his way, experimenting with different artistic mediums like painting and filmmaking. Now, he's getting ready for his first major Canadian exhibit in 25 years. In a rare interview, Jeff tells Tom Power about the first time he got a camera, how his parents supported him by building him a shed in their backyard, and why he kind of likes it when you don't know the titles of his photographs.Fill out our listener survey here. Dope. • X-Men '97 — New showrunners. Same as the first showrunners. Trailer was sick. • Daredevil Season 2 — trailer blew up. Jessica Jones shows. It's bigger, wilder, leads into Brand New Day. Season 3 also confirmed. • Wonder Man — meta AF. An actor chasing a superhero life? Could end up with actual powers. • Vision Quest — most of this one's inside Vision's head. He's wrestling with all his AIs (Jarvis, FRIDAY, Karen, Ultron, Edith), and one of his kids might still be alive. • Mortal Kombat 2 — they dropped a 5-min clip. This week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast introduces a three-week series dedicated to beauty packaging. Despite daily interacting with beauty products — including face wash, body wash, lipstick or shampoo — consumers rarely spend time thinking about the countless decisions that go into a brand's packaging. From sustainability (Are refills offered? Is the plastic PCR?) to color (think: the pull of millennial pink) to font, every packaging element is carefully considered. As our first guest in the series, FIT Professor Sebba Alqetrani, said, “The first thing the consumer sees, touches and interacts with is the package. [It] is your first opportunity to have a first impression.” Over the next two weeks, we will explore just why packaging is so important and what factors can make it impactful, whether it has to do with a product's efficacy, branding or deeper emotional resonance. But first, a look at some of this week's headlines including the launch of Ulta Beauty's UB Marketplace, a curated third-party marketplace that will allow the mega beauty retailer to integrate many new brands into its existing e-commerce site; Sephora's growth, bolstered in part by Rhode's buzzy launch, according to LVMH's recent earnings; and The Body Shop's return to U.S. sales , launching online through a direct-to-consumer site and Amazon.

In this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, I'm diving into a topic that I know so many of us can relate to: fear. Whether it's the fear of showing up online, raising your rates, hosting your first class, or being truly seen, I want to help you understand how to stop letting fear take over and start taking your power back.As we step into the last quarter of the year, I've been reflecting a lot, not just on what I've accomplished, but on the things that have been holding me back. Before I plan my goals for next year, I always take time to look at what's standing in my way. And this time, that led me to a powerful concept called interviewing your fear.In this episode, I share what it really means to interview your fear, how to sit with it, ask it questions, and uncover what's really behind it. I talk about my own experiences with fear, from worrying if people would show up to my first class, to realizing that some of the fears I carry weren't even mine to begin with. They were passed down from others. You'll hear how I've learned to shift from confronting fear to getting curious about it. Because fear doesn't always go away. It just needs to be understood, acknowledged, and then moved through with compassion.

By now you have probably heard about the sunscreen testing scandal. Earlier this year in June, CHOICE tested a bunch of sunscreen products in the Australian market, and many came back well under their marketed SPF. The one that really caught everyone's attention was from Ultraviolet, with a claimed SPF of 50+, results came back at 4. What came next was some of the most bizarre behaviour I think I've ever observed in the beauty industry. First with some of the brand responses, then to the dynamics on social media. Things evolved quickly, where now the TGA has stepped in, a bunch of sunscreens have been recalled, and it looks like there may have been some testing fraud. To help us understand this mess, I brought together an expert roundtable with the people I thought were best positioned to do the topic justice - in conversation with Brian Ecclefield, industry testing expert who also has firsthand experience with PCR, the lab behind the scandal. Dr. Michelle Wong from Labmuffin Beauty Science, science content creator who's pretty much the sunscreen science queen of the interwebs in my books. And finally, Hannah English, sunscreen and science content creator, also coming with the brand founder POV. Michelle and Hannah collectively did some of the best scicomm on this story on social media as it all unfolded, they were my steadfast voices of reason. If you work in beauty, this conversation probably should be a must listen! Interested in supporting the podcast? Please share, subscribe and write a review!
