My guest today is Dan Sundheim. Dan is the founder and CIO of D1 Capital Partners. He thinks about markets and businesses constantly, and has built a career entirely around that obsession. He manages over $30B across both public and private markets, with investments in SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic, and a public portfolio of names you may never have heard of. Dan shares the story of the short case he wrote on Orthodontic Centers of America and posted on Value Investors Club, which crashed the stock, and helped him land his first job. He shares why he backed Anthropic at a moment when many people told him it was the Lyft to OpenAI's Uber, what reading Dario Amodei's essays reminded him of Jeff Bezos, and how he thinks about LLM business models through the lens of Netflix and Spotify. We spend time on the extraordinarily stressful moment in early 2021 when GameStop hit the firm, and what Dan believes is the single biggest tail risk facing the global economy right now. (3:30) The term has gained traction since GLP-1s became more popular. "Counting culture" has also contributed—people seek ways to accommodate unhealthy foods. (5:00) They discuss popular snack foods, cravings, and weight gain. The best thing you can do is not bring those types of food into the house. They share stories about ice cream and eating it on rare occasions. (16:00) If you are going to do "Life Into Living," save it for something truly good, not some dumb junk food. For example, have a gelato when you are in Italy. (19:00) Important note: If you want to stop food noise, do not eat the food that causes it. (22:00) Processed foods are meant to trigger cravings and addiction. When you switch to a low-carb diet, the food cravings often lessen over time and can even completely go away. (23:00) Going low-carb naturally mimics the effects of GLP-1 without side effects. Food has become political rather than just food. (31:00) Various diets have also become a type of food noise. People labeling themselves have gained an almost religious fervor. Subsidized crops are used as filler in processed foods; as a result, real, whole foods are more expensive. (35:00) They discuss Instacart and its impact on in-store grocery prices. (37:50) They discuss money, time, resources, and goals to eat healthy, quick meals. (41:00) Start doing things yourself and stop mailing it out to everyone else. (50:00) Vinnie shares a story from mentor Joe Dean about what it means to "take the garbage out." If you need to hire one person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world has the hustle and grit to deliver. www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader My Guest: Jesse Cole is the owner of the Savannah Bananas. He went $1.8 million in debt, slept on an air mattress, and built a business that is now valued at over a billion dollars. I spent half a day with Jesse in Savannah watching practice, and Jesse gave me a personal tour of their entire operation. It was incredible. Notes: Fans First - The sign is on every locker. And leading out to the field, "Tonight is someone's first time seeing our show." Obsessed/Focused - Banana Ball/Serving people is his life. We didn't talk about hobbies, TV shows, or anything other than what they're doing now and in the future. He's obsessed with what he does and super focused. Transparent - Jesse just released their full P&L as a private company: revenue, expenses, player salaries, everything. Most businesses guard this religiously. He's completely transparent. I asked why, and he said, "Fans first. They deserve to know everything." Reps - We went to the field to watch practice. It looked just like a game. Players were dancing all the time. And every single rep they practiced as a trick play (behind the back, through the legs, etc.). They never play normal baseball. You wonder how they are so good on gameday at doing a backflip while catching a fly ball. Because they practice it thousands of times without fans so that when they're there, they put on a great show. Hiring – "Love your people more than you love your customer." 12,000 people on the waitlist to work for the Bananas. When you hire, have them do a "fans first" essay. Then they write a future essay.  Always Be Caring, Different, Enthusiastic, Fun, Growing, & Hungry Fans First: The Counter-Intuitive Decision - Jesse sacrificed $6 million in ticket revenue after a system messed things up for fans.  Merch – 787,000 fans purchased merchandise in 2025, totaling 1.96 million total items. That means the average person is purchasing ~2.5 items at checkout, with 80% of total sales taking place in person. 621,000 at live shows versus 166,000 online. It's a $50m business! TV: The Distribution Strategy - Giving Away Value - Jesse insisted on free YouTube streaming even when ESPN wanted exclusivity. Jesse is building a zero-profit secondary ticket market. He's literally giving away things other sports properties would monetize. So, even with all of the team's games still airing for free on YouTube, the Bananas averaged 500,000 viewers on ESPN, The CW, and Roku. The team's most-watched broadcast was a July 4th game at Fenway Park, which averaged 837,000 viewers on ESPN, making it the holiday weekend's most-watched primetime sports broadcast. TV networks want exclusivity, but you demand that the games still be broadcast for free on YouTube (in addition to whatever channel they are on) Social Media - The Bananas added 12.7 million new social media followers in 2025 alone. That pushes their total social media following across all channels north of 35 million... Roughly 2x more followers than MLB's most popular team, the Yankees, at 18 million. You have to believe something before you achieve something. Six years ago, Jesse said, "We're gonna sell out Fenway Park," and his team looked at him like he was crazy (they were a college summer baseball team, not even doing tours yet). You have to get through the messy to get to the great. Their first world tour was brutal: the sound was terrible, the show wasn't great, the game finished in the seventh inning because they didn't have a rule to make it go nine innings. See what's best for the guest, not what's best for the business. Walt Disney was the first to go into full-length animation, color, sound, and with Disneyland, he focused on one entrance to control the experience, custom rides, and invested in a castle and landscaping, which made no money. Go where others won't go. Sam Walton went to small towns, and no one paid attention to him for the first five to ten years. It's somebody's first time every night. Fans wait three years on a waitlist to come to a game, so Jesse doesn't care if you're having a bad day. That's their first time. Control the entire experience. Walt learned he couldn't control the experience when people watched his movies at a theater (it could be dirty, and people might not be nice), so he built Disneyland. Who do we work for? Fans. Jesse opened the books completely (numbers, player salary, merch sales, everything) because they have a responsibility and accountability to their fans. We have to feel our mistakes. When they sent a wrong email to 44,000 fans instead of 4,000, it cost them $6 million to take care of those fans with tickets (more than the company brought in their first five years). We need to have bigger failures. If we're not trying things big enough, we won't have bigger failures and mistakes that cost us a lot more in the future. Turn mistakes into moments. After the $6 million email mistake, Jesse set up a Zoom call with all 44,000 people, had everyone turn their cameras on, and apologized while looking at every single person. Build something you wish existed for yourself. Jesse played baseball until he couldn't anymore. He put so much pressure on himself that it wasn't fun anymore, and he was told he wasn't good enough. Design every second of the first-day experience. When players showed up, they went to a parking lot with a DJ at 8:30 AM. Three buses arrived with balloons, hundreds of people lined the streets cheering, Man-nanas served munchkins on silver platters, a custom hype video played, the host introduced from the roof, and fireworks went off. Every player has been told they're not good enough. All Bananas players have been drafted or been top college players, and at some point, they've all been rejected, cut, told to hang it up. Obsession is awesome. If you can find something you're obsessed with, so few people in the world get to have that. Watch the best of the best obsess over details. Derek Hough (one of the greatest dancers) wasn't just focusing on the dance; he was producing while dancing, telling the camera crew exactly where to come, when to hit him, and where he would wink. No one goes home excited about normal. No one says, "That restaurant was really normal, the waiter served it the same way, the food was pretty normal, the parking lot was normal." Whatever's normal, do the exact opposite. Normal gets normal results. There's a lot of normal in the world, but not a lot of extraordinary. Put yourself in the customer's shoes and eliminate friction. Where's the game tonight? On Amazon, Peacock, CBS, NBC? Jesse threw away millions to keep all games free on YouTube because that's a friction point. Your fans will reward you. The Bananas sold over 1.9 million merch items last year because they built something people are proud of and want to wear. If people don't want to wear your merch, you haven't made them feel something yet. One fan gets a new Bananas tattoo every year (he's got six logos on his leg now). Invest everything in the experience, spend zero on traditional marketing. Make the experience so good that fans will share with everyone that this is something they haven't experienced before. Social media growth came from trying and stumbling into learning. In 2016, an intern said he could create videos; they did a lip sync to "Can't Stop the Feeling" by Justin Timberlake. It wasn't even well-produced, but they tried. Give energy back because of how good it feels. A woman came up to Jesse on a cruise and said she was there because he gave her a hug at a Sacramento game the day after her sister died. She came on the cruise to give him a hug back. Do what gives you energy. Jesse's entire day is filled with things that give him energy: being with people, rehearsing shows, banana ball youth meetings, broadcast team, and talented writers. Have people who love to execute. You do what gives you energy and have them execute at a high level. Be very involved at the beginning (get the idea and vision right) and at the end (make adjustments).

How do we think about war? How do we imagine it, picture it and explain it? Adam Rutherford hosts Radio 4's discussion programme which starts the week, asking what we can learn about ourselves from our varied intellectual and cultural responses to conflict.Sir Lawrence Freedman is one of the world's leading scholars of warfare. In his new collection of essays, On Strategists and Strategy, he considers some of the key strategic thinkers of the last century and thoughts about the significance of political calculation, military tactics, organisational behaviour, character and psychology.A new exhibition opens in March at the Imperial War Museum, London titled Beauty and Destruction: Wartime London in Art. The curator Rebecca Newell explains what we learn from the ways in which artists recorded changes to the city during the Second World War in paintings, drawings and film. The Hôtel Lutetia, the grand hotel on Paris's Left Bank, has over the years drawn bohemians and great artists, including Matisse and Picasso. However, for a short period around the Second World War, the hotel was witness to significant events. Jane Rogoyska's new book Hotel Exile: Paris in the Shadow of War peoples the hotel with the intellectual and refugees gathering there in the 1930s, the men of the German military intelligence service who made it their headquarters and the deportees returning from concentration camps.Producer: Ruth Watts

Art and beauty exert a measurable influence on the human body and soul: exposure to harmonious form, color, proportion, and music has been shown to lower cortisol, reduce blood pressure, regulate breathing, and stimulate dopamine and oxytocin—chemicals associated with pleasure, bonding, and well-being—while simultaneously activating memory centers in the brain that connect us to personal and collective history. Beauty draws the nervous system out of chronic stress and into contemplative presence; it anchors us in the “now” while evoking echoes of the past through shared symbols, sacred architecture, ancestral music, and enduring masterpieces that generations have contemplated before us. In this way, art becomes both physiological medicine and cultural bridge: it calms the body, orders the emotions, elevates the mind, and binds us to those who lived centuries ago, reminding us that we stand within a living continuum of meaning, memory, and human dignity.Jennifer Nash Kochevar is an art expert in Minnesota.   She has a passion for bringing beauty, elegance, meaning and connection to the world.  Gallery 366 https://share.google/wni5LPFCAe705tW4iDr. Fred Clary, founder of Functional Analysis Chiropractic Technique and lifting/life coach/ gym-chalk covered philosopher interviews an art expert that helps bring quality and meaning to her clients' worlds.

Spring doesn't arrive all at once. It sneaks in slowly—the first warm afternoon, the extra hour of daylight, the return of outside play and evening walks. After the long gray days of winter, spring offers something different: momentum. In this Habits & Holidays episode, Clayton Greene, Chris Pappalardo, and Amy Kavanaugh explore the spiritual and practical opportunities of “surely spring”—that stretch between winter's heaviness and summer's freedom. They discuss how the rhythms of school, work, weather, and the Church calendar all converge to create a unique season of stride—a time to lean into growth, alignment, and meaningful family habits.Rather than expecting life to look the same all year long, spring invites families to embrace seasonality: to notice what God is already doing, and to respond with intentionality.TakeawaysSpring creates momentum after the heaviness of winter.Seasonality affects our capacity, mood, and spiritual rhythms.Spiritual habits can—and should—shift with the calendar.Spring offers unique opportunities for growth, beauty, and alignment.Easter anchors spring as a season of renewal and hope.Families can use spring's energy to establish meaningful rhythms outdoors and at home.Chapters00:00 Welcome & Habits and Holidays introduction02:55 Why seasons shape family and spiritual life03:42 How seasonality affects mood, capacity, and relationships04:28 Giving yourself permission for seasonal spiritual habits05:30 Escaping the “flatness” of modern life07:24 Defining the boundaries of “surely spring”09:42 The opportunities spring creates for families09:59 Beauty, gardening, and cultivating outdoor spaces12:25 The return of outdoor play and family life outside13:26 Daylight savings, Lent, and preparing for Easter15:23 Spring as a season of rhythm, flow, and momentum16:49 Why spring feels like the natural stride of the year18:10 Spring break and pacing the spiritual and family calendar19:25 Where spring appears in the biblical story20:47 Goal-setting, alignment, and faithful momentum

About This EpisodeIn this guest episode I sit down with Professor Marc J. Defant, Professor of Geology and Geochemistry whose work spans the physical sciences and evolutionary psychology.Recently he published a peer-reviewed paper in Sexuality & Culture titled “Evolutionary Psychology and the Crisis of Empirical Rigor in Feminist Studies” - https://rdcu.be/eOkjZThe paper argues that much of modern feminist scholarship is ideology and not grounded in any truth. Professor Defant and I discuss how social constructivism has created confusion about relationships, work, masculinity, and femininity. We explore human evolution, parental investment theory, cross-cultural studies of mate selection preferences, and much more.Listen in to learn how feminism might have broken an old template but has gone too far in denying human nature, why suppressing sex differences actually clarifies them more, the real roots of the pay gap, and what's really going on between men and women today.Get in touch with Professor Marc J. Want to reach out to us? Want to leave a comment or review? Want to give us a suggestion or berate Anthony? Send us a text by clicking this link! The desert exposes what we truly love. We open Lent's first Sunday by sitting with Saint Paul's urgency—now is the day of salvation—and then step beside Jesus as he refuses the devil's plausible shortcuts: bread without trust, spectacle without obedience, power without worship. Each scene becomes a mirror for our lives, where comfort, image, and control tug at the heart. Instead of rules alone, we explore how confidence in the Father reframes fasting, how humility undercuts pride's hunger to be seen, and how true worship breaks the spell of more. From there, we draw on Divine Intimacy to map the great combat against the triple concupiscence of flesh, pride, and avarice. Temptations are not signs of failure but invitations to rely on actual grace, given right at the edge of our limits. We talk frankly about how to answer in real time: short prayers that steady the will, simple acts of penance that teach the body to wait, and a habit of trust that keeps us from negotiating with shadows. The goal is not stoic toughness; it is attachment to God that makes lesser loves lose their grip.We also share a personal journey of leaving the sacraments, tasting what the world promises, and returning through the sobering call of fatherhood. That honesty shapes how we speak to a generation raised on noise and nihilism. Beauty—cathedrals, chant, the traditional liturgy—cuts through cynicism, not as aesthetic escape but as a sign of the real. Yet beauty must be paired with truth about the Church's wounds, or seekers feel betrayed. We hold both: the spotless Bride and our imperfect pilgrimage. The way forward is dependence, not self-sufficiency—letting God reorder desire so Lent becomes training in freedom. If this conversation helps you face your own desert with courage, share it with a friend, subscribe for the full Lent series, and leave a review to tell us what practice keeps you grounded right now.Support the showCheck out our new sponsor, Nic Nac, at www.nicnac.com and use code "AB25%" for 25% off!********************************************************Please subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKsxnv80ByFV4OGvt_kImjQ?sub_confirmation=1https://www.avoidingbabylon.comMerchandise: https://avoiding-babylon-shop.fourthwall.comLocals Community: https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comFull Premium/Locals Shows on Audio Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1987412/subscribeRSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssRumble: https://rumble.com/c/AvoidingBabylon

During the winter months, our skin is typically very dry due to the cold weather. The harsh winds and lower temperatures irritate and dehydrate our face, requiring us to use more heavy moisturizers to retain moisture. However, as we switch to the nicer springtime months, we can begin incorporating new skincare techniques such as glycolic washes or dermaplaning to wipe away our dull, winter skin. Newer seasons, call for new skincare practices. Listen on to hear my tips and tricks for ensuring your spring beauty!

Beauty at a pivotal moment and helped turn it from industry underdog to category disruptor, with a retail footprint spanning Sephora, Target, Dollar General, and H&M — while outperforming much of the beauty sector. Amin breaks down the unconventional moves driving that growth, from lightning-fast product cycles and hands-on AI experimentation to cultural bets like partnering with Hailey Bieber. Send a textIn this episode of The Remarkable People Podcast, host David Pasqualone interviews author and entrepreneur Sandra Lena Silverman, a co-founder of a large mortgage business and mother of two, about her life story and the lessons she wants listeners to apply—especially learning to love themselves. Sandra shares being adopted as an infant, childhood molestation that later manifested as a severe fear of elevators, and a lifelong pattern of perfectionism and overachieving. She recounts a difficult marriage marked by gaslighting, manipulation, and emotional abuse from a narcissistic husband, including constant body-shaming that contributed to her pursuit of numerous cosmetic procedures and surgeries. Sandra describes how the abuse escalated after pregnancy, the onset of infidelity, multiple separations (including in 2006, 2016, and 2023), and her decision to end the cycle with a final separation in 2024 and ongoing divorce proceedings. She explains how prolonged stress affected her health—high cortisol, inflammation, shaking—and how those symptoms improved after leaving. Sandra discusses warning signs such as love bombing, excuses, and blame-shifting, emphasizes the need for strong boundaries, and updates listeners on her current work: her book deal for three books (including the republished From Bullshit to Botox and a forthcoming second book focused on her marriage and narcissism), her show Parties Over, and her social media presence where people can connect with her.01:50 What You'll Learn Today: Loving Yourself02:56 Adopted in Maryland: Family, Identity, and Early Questions04:58 Childhood Trauma Revealed: Molestation, Memory, and Finding Her Birth Mother06:21 The Trauma Shows Up Later: Claustrophobia & Fear of Elevators08:18 Perfectionism and Overachieving to Earn Love09:37 Meeting Her Ex: The First Body-Shaming Comment10:49 Building a Business + The First Surgery (and the Put-Downs Continue)14:04 Pregnancy, Cruelty, and the Moment She Saw the “Monster”16:13 Affairs, Separations, and the Crossroads She Didn't Leave19:05 Hard-Won Warning: Without Boundaries, It Only Gets Worse20:11 Breaking the Cycle: Final Separation & Choosing Yourself22:13 Healing After Abuse: Epiphanies, Boundaries, and Health Recovery25:02 Kids, Co-Parenting, and Protecting Them from Dysfunction26:21 Red Flags of Narcissism: Love Bombing, Gaslighting, and Blame-Shifting29:40 Life After Leaving: Books, Podcast, New Opportunities, and Independence32:50 Beauty vs. Self-Worth: Elective Surgery, Internal Work, and Doing It for You35:00 Faith, Divorce, and Where to Find Sandra + Final Wrap-Up37:25 Podcast Closing Message: Feedback, Sharing, and Living the MissionREMARKABLE SPECIAL OFFER: Save Big on Your Console Vault In-Vehicle Safe. We break down how Alli identified a white space in the beauty industry, scaled a service-based business at lightning speed, expanded into product, and ultimately made the decision to raise private equity and bring in a CEO. She shares candid insights on fundraising, delegation, leadership growth, and the hard lessons that come with scaling fast.
