The Beauty stars familiar faces from the Ryan Murphy universe, including Evan Peters, as well as new collaborators like Ashton Kutcher. In the show, a genetic biotech serum has been engineered to transform people into ridiculously good-looking supermodels. But there's at least one problem: Eventually, those supermodels are dying suddenly, horrifically and spectacularly. Is it astute commentary, crass exploitation, or maybe a bit of both? Well, it's definitely a Ryan Murphy production, through and through.Subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour Plus at plus.npr.org/happyhour Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
On today's episode, I'm joined by Jacq Gould for a grounded, honest conversation about building self trust, reconnecting with yourself, and navigating seasons where you feel stuck or disconnected. We explore what self connection really looks like in daily life, the common signs of disconnection like perfectionism, people pleasing, and overextending, and why worthiness isn't something you earn after achieving a goal—but something that's built through self trust. Jacq shares her personal journey into this work, the power of group healing, and practical tools like daily nourishment practices, collecting evidence when things work out, and knowing when it's time to redirect a goal instead of forcing it. From reframing self-talk and releasing fear-based thinking to balancing self connection through motherhood, this episode offers thoughtful insights and tangible practices to help you feel more grounded, confident, and aligned with yourself. The Beauty of Authenticity — John Van DeusenSongwriter John Van Deusen joins Makers & Mystics to explore the beauty of authenticity in art, faith, and vocation. In a creative landscape that often rewards certainty and success, John reflects on the cost—and freedom—of making honesty the point. At the center of the conversation is his latest album, As Long As I Am In The Tent of This Body I Will Make A Joyful Noise, a shape-shifting, faith-inflected collection that resists tidy resolutions and embraces vulnerability, doubt, joy, and embodied life.Together, host Stephen Roach and John Van Deusen talk about creative calling, audience expectation, near-successes, family life, and why authenticity remains a risky—but faithful—posture for artists.Send us a textSupport the show Get Tickets to The Breath and The Clay 2026 featuring Malcolm Guite, Jon Guerra, and Jonathan Pageau! Nick catches up with Dan Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter for another round of TV talk, starting with a few standout documentaries from Sundance and the latest run of SNL episodes. From there, Dan digs into a busy slate of new shows, including Memory of a Killer starring Patrick Dempsey, The Beauty from Ryan Murphy, The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins with Tracy Morgan, and a new spinoff from the Game of Thrones universe. Esmeralda Leon joins Nick later as the conversation shifts into what they have been watching lately and quickly veers into some truly baffling casting choices. They revisit moments like Angelina Jolie playing the mother of Colin Farrell and the long tradition of actors in their twenties and thirties somehow passing as high school kids. It's a mix of sharp TV insight, shared viewing notes, and plenty of head shaking over casting decisions that still make no sense. [Ep 424]
Last week, the fashion world lost a giant. Valentino Garavani, the Roman couturier who launched his label in 1960, died at 93. Alessandro Michele, the Creative Director of the maison, recalled Valentino as “almost a mythical figure.”Michele joined Nicole Phelps last year on The Run-Through for a formidable conversation about his new life chez Valentino, just ahead of his Haute Couture debut. Michele previously spent 21 years at Gucci, the last eight as creative director, where his maximalist, egalitarian vision of beauty was culture-shifting.He talks about his approach to creativity, why he styles his own collections, how he seeks and keeps joy in the world, and why he thinks “fashion can build a better, dreamy place.”Plus, Paris Couture Week is in full swing! Amy Liu is Founder and CEO of best-selling sensitive skin-friendly beauty brand Tower 28. After graduating from the University of California San Diego, Amy got her MBA in marketing and entrepreneurship from the University of Southern California. She led a successful 20+ year career as a beauty executive, building some of the fastest-growing prestige brands including Smashbox, Kate Somerville, and Josie Maran Cosmetics. But as a longtime eczema sufferer, she couldn't enjoy the best part of working in beauty: trying out all the products! She saw this challenge as an opportunity, and so in 2019, Amy launched Tower 28: a beauty company designed to be a safe space for sensitive skin. Tower 28's award-winning SOS skincare line is the first to earn seals of approval from the National Psoriasis Foundation, National Rosacea Society, and National Eczema Association— a testament to its commitment to skin-safe, effective formulations. In this deeply moving episode of Grief to Growth, Brian Smith is joined by writer and seeker Alexis Lee, author of Pain Is a Portal to Beauty, for a courageous conversation about grief, trauma, and radical self-healing.Alexis shares the moment that changed her life — hearing a voice while walking in the woods that told her her life would have been a tragedy if it ended that day. That message became the beginning of a profound journey into grief she had buried since childhood, including the loss of her mother and generational trauma carried in the body.Together, Brian and Alexis explore what happens when we stop running from pain and instead listen to it.This episode isn't about fixing yourself. It's about remembering who you are beneath the pain.
As European imperialism heated up in Africa in the late 1800's, King Leopold II of Belgium put into motion one of the most ambitious and villainous plans in all of European history - the theft of the entire Congo. Utilizing the work of explorer Henry Morton Stanley, European animus towards the Afro-Arab Slave Trade, the creation of dubious committees and associations, international lobbying of governments, public relations campaigns, and bogus treaties with the people of Congo, Leopold understood that "...we must be cautious, clever and quick to act. I would not expose myself to displeasing the English or letting escape a good opportunity to get some of this beautiful African cake." In 1885, the countries of Europe gave their blessing to Leopold's slice of cake at the Berlin Conference. This episode is Part 2 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at how Leopold II of Belgium went from being a monarch of tiny Belgium to the owner of the biggest European colony in Africa. Upcoming episodes will discuss atrocities in the Congo, resistance and reform movements, and more. -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom podcast, host Stewart Alsop sits down with Dima Zhelezov, a philosopher at SQD.ai, to explore the fascinating intersections of cryptocurrency, AI, quantum physics, and the future of human knowledge. The conversation covers everything from Zhelezov's work building decentralized data lakes for blockchain data to deep philosophical questions about the nature of mathematical beauty, the Renaissance ideal of curiosity-driven learning, and whether AI agents will eventually develop their own form of consciousness. Stewart and Dima examine how permissionless databases are making certain activities "unenforceable" rather than illegal, the paradox of mathematics' incredible accuracy in describing the physical world, and why we may be entering a new Renaissance era where curiosity becomes humanity's most valuable skill as AI handles traditional tasks. You can find more about Dima's work at SQD.ai and follow him on X at @dizhel.Timestamps00:00 Introduction to Decentralized Data Lakes02:55 The Evolution of Blockchain Data Management05:55 The Intersection of Blockchain and Traditional Databases08:43 The Role of AI in Transparency and Control11:51 AI Autonomy and Human Interaction15:05 Curiosity in the Age of AI17:54 The Renaissance of Knowledge and Learning20:49 Mathematics, Beauty, and Discovery27:30 The Evolution of Mathematical Thought30:28 Quantum Mechanics and Mathematical Predictions33:43 The Search for a Unified Theory38:57 The Role of Gravity in Physics41:23 The Shift from Physics to Biology46:19 The Future of Human Interaction in a Digital AgeKey Insights1. Blockchain as a Permissionless Database Solution - Traditional blockchains were designed for writing transactions but not efficiently reading data. Dima's company SQD.ai built a decentralized data lake that maintains blockchain's key properties (open read/write access, verifiable, no registration required) while solving the database problem. This enables applications like Polymarket to exist because there's "no one to subpoena" - the permissionless nature makes enforcement impossible even when activities might be regulated in traditional systems.2. The Convergence of On-Chain and Off-Chain Data - The future won't have distinct "blockchain applications" versus traditional apps. Instead, we'll see seamless integration where users don't even know they're using blockchain technology. The key differentiator is that blockchain provides open read and write access without permission, which becomes essential when touching financial or politically sensitive applications that governments might try to shut down through traditional centralized infrastructure.3. AI Autonomy and the Illusion of Control - We're rapidly approaching full autonomy of AI agents that can transact and analyze information independently through blockchain infrastructure. While humans still think anthropocentrically about AI as companions or tools, these systems may develop consciousness or motivations completely alien to human understanding. This creates a dangerous "illusion of control" where we can operationalize AI systems without truly comprehending their decision-making processes.4. Curiosity as the Essential Future Skill - In a world of infinite knowledge and AI capabilities, curiosity becomes the primary limiting factor for human progress. Traditional hard and soft skills will be outsourced to AI, making the ability to ask good questions and pursue interests through Socratic dialogue with AI the most valuable human capacity. This mirrors the Renaissance ideal of the polymath, now enabled by AI that allows non-linear exploration of knowledge rather than traditional linear textbook learning.5. The Beauty Principle in Mathematical Discovery - Mathematics exhibits an "unreasonable effectiveness" where theories developed purely abstractly turn out to predict real-world phenomena with extraordinary accuracy. Quantum chromodynamics, developed through mathematical beauty and elegance, can predict particle physics experiments to incredible precision. This suggests either mathematical truths exist independently for AI to discover, or that aesthetic principles may be fundamental organizing forces in the universe.6. The Physics Plateau and Biological Shift - Modern physics faces a unique problem where the Standard Model works too well - it explains everything we can currently measure except gravity, but we can't create experiments to test the edge cases where the theory should break down. This has led to a decline in physics prominence since the 1960s, with scientific excitement shifting toward biology and, now, AI and crypto, where breakthrough discoveries remain accessible.7. Two Divergent Futures: Abundance vs. Dystopia - We face a stark choice between two AI futures: a super-abundant world where AI eliminates scarcity and humans pursue curiosity, beauty, and genuine connection; or a dystopian scenario where 0.01% capture all AI-generated value while everyone else survives on UBI, becoming "degraded to zombies" providing content for AI models. The outcome depends on whether we prioritize human flourishing or power concentration during this critical technological transition.

First you hear the phrase at native speed, then slowed down so you can nail the soft “fizyczna” and the flowing “atrakcja.” We drop it into three flirt-ready sentences: – “Czuję fizyczną atrakcję.” (I feel physical attraction.) – “Ona jest bardzo atrakcyjna.” (She's very attractive.) – “To nie tylko wygląd.” (It's not just looks.) Episode 373 of RevolutionZ hears about people trained to perform deciding to build power. Celia Crowley—actor, organizer, and then California's governor but later to become Vice President—to unpacks how a quiet coalition inside Hollywood traded optics for organization and turned celebrity into a conduit for collective action. From a first awkward meeting in a palatial living room to strikes that rebalanced power on set, Celia lays out some moves that mattered: an intensive “social school” for film workers, a high-stakes push for pay transparency, and films that funnel surplus revenue into real campaigns.Perhaps most revealingly, Celia dismantles the myth of artistic exceptionalism with great clarity. Creativity doesn't need hierarchy to thrive. It can do still better with equity, shared decision-making, and room for many voices. She discusses how democratic planning can fund cultural work without dictating its content, how balanced jobs expanded total creativity, and how evidence from RPS-style productions challenged the old game of genius-for-power. She also gets personal about beauty as currency, the risks behind the red carpet, and the hard line to draw between admiration and structural privilege.Along the way, she answers questions about a pivotal Oscar night, a landmark industry strike, and the steady rise of worker councils across sets and studios. The episode provides a template with lessons for journalism, sports, and any field where a few have long held center stage. Celia provides reason to rethink who decides what gets made, who gets paid, and how audiences become stakeholders. Her experience offers strategy, examples, and proof points to use whatever your work and passion may highlight.Support the show

Jeremy Haun joins Word Balloon for a timely, wide-ranging conversation about creator ownership, publishing independence, and the moment The Beauty is having right now. With The Beauty debuting this week as an FX/Hulu television series produced by Ryan Murphy, Jeremy breaks down how the show translates his original Image Comics series to the screen, what stayed true, what changed, and why those differences actually matter. It's an honest look at adaptation, collaboration, and letting a story evolve without losing its core. From there, the conversation shifts to the launch of Ignition Press: why Jeremy helped build a new publisher, what gaps he sees in the current comics landscape, and how Ignition plans to support creator-owned projects from concept to long-term success. Jeremy is candid about the realities of adaptation, the lessons learned from The Beauty, and why betting on bold, creator-driven ideas is more important now than ever. Would you like to develop more creative confidence? Have you ever embarked on, or considered, a sketching practice? In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, we explore the link between the two in conversation with artist, printmaker, and creative coach Sam Marshall. Sam is based here in the UK and has recently released a beautiful book called Sketch: A Project Guide To Drawing With Confidence. I was fortunate enough to receive a digital copy last year and honestly, wow. It inspires, equips, and gently mentors people to start a drawing practice and engage with their natural creativity. What I love most about the book is its emphasis on helping you find your own creative voice. This is supported by Sam's Sketch Squad, a small group of participants who work through the exercises together. Seeing the same prompts interpreted in wildly different ways has a surprisingly powerful effect. For me, the most helpful part was witnessing the sheer range of styles, approaches, and ways of noticing the world. https://youtu.be/yfiDlMKtMQA Creative Confidence and the Beauty of Difference A huge part of creative confidence is realising that differences in how we see, what we notice, and what we care about are not flaws. This is why art and creativity sit at the heart of being human. Creative expression is our collective humanity experiencing itself in all its weird and wonderful variety. I was reminded of this recently while talking about map-making as a way to understand our relationship with different areas of life. If you give the same prompt to 100 people, you do not get a single map done well. You get a hundred completely different maps. That is what I hope people take into and out of this conversation. Difference is beautiful. It is not about doing it right. What Sam offers through this book is a sketching practice that gives us tracks along which to see, feel, and experience the world in a more alive and interesting way than when we are stuck in ultra-productivity mode, trying to make everything efficient and easy. Why a Sketching Practice Builds Creative Confidence A drawing practice helps us slow down, observe, and engage our creative spirit through process rather than outcome. There is something gently rebellious about sketching in the digital age, where the default response is to pull out a phone and take a photo. There is a difference between capturing something quickly so we can hoard and move on, and drawing as a way of anchoring ourselves in the environment. Drawing asks us to stay. To notice. To let time pass while the world happens around us. Light shifts. Shadows move. People come and go. Smells, sounds, and sensations change. Rather than consuming the environment, we are engaging with it. Sam shares a lovely story about drawing in public and finding herself surrounded by Japanese school children. It creates a beautiful image of the quiet, magnetic energy that people who are deeply engaged with life often carry. Perhaps we are drawn to them because they are interesting. Or perhaps because they are moving at a pace many of us are craving. Practice Over Skill Focusing on practice rather than skill also reshapes what success means in art. Instead of achievement, accomplishment, or the finished piece, success becomes about rhythm, consistency, and an ongoing relationship with seeing and making. Letting go of outcome-oriented art is not about lowering standards. It is about shifting attention. It is not about producing pretty drawings. Rather, it is about sitting down with your sketchbook and using it as a tool for observing. Drawing anchors us in space and time, allowing us to witness change as it unfolds. The Sketching Exercises Sam Walks Us Through In the conversation, Sam takes us through the thinking behind the book’s exercises, each designed to build creative confidence through experience. In the Home Starting where you are. Noticing objects and spaces you have spent years with, perhaps without really seeing them. Outside the Home Venturing out to see the walls of your world from the outside. Noticing what is close by and reconnecting with physical space. It reveals details in neighbourhoods and communities that often go unseen. The Stories We Tell Ourselves About Drawing Sam explores some of the beliefs that hold people back, such as:“What if I am not good enough?”“I do not want to look silly or draw like a five-year-old.” Portraits Portraits were the most challenging exercise for many Sketch Squad members. They require vulnerability. You ask something of another person, and you share something personal in return. This is something we see in Tuula’s Photoyoga For Your Mind Experience. 25 Days of Drawing Simple prompts designed to build a habit and keep you drawing without overthinking it. Drawing in Public Another edge for many people. Being seen doing something personal and slightly unusual in a culture that loves to judge creative effort. Drawing on Holiday Experiencing places through the slowness of drawing adds depth to memory. Sam shares a sketchbook from her recent trip to Japan, which holds far more meaning for her than a photo album ever could. A helpful reminder for any habit, too. Start on the first day away. Intentions turn into behaviours quickly, for better or worse. Drawing From Paintings A way of engaging critically with art as part of the human story, not just as a product. It teaches us about history, context, and what we might want to bring into our own practice. Experimental Drawing Combining senses. Drawing from music, film, collage, and even dreams. The Personal Project Turning the practice into a chosen project that marks a pause between chapters. Sam explains why she calls this a personal project rather than a final assignment. How Creative Confidence Actually Grows Creative confidence does not arrive before we start. It emerges along the way. Through consistency, we become confident in what we notice and why we care. For experimental types, confidence is not something we can fake into existence. But we can trust that playful, curious engagement with something like a sketching practice develops capacities we do not yet have language for. I hope you enjoy the conversation. Thank you again to Sam for giving her time so generously and for walking us through the thinking behind, beneath, and within the book. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Karl and Erum sit down with Amy Trejo and Jose Carlos Garcia Garcia from Procter & Gamble to uncover how one of the world's largest consumer goods companies is leveraging biotechnology to innovate at unprecedented scale. Founded 189 years ago as a bio-waste upcycling partnership between a candle maker and a soap maker, P&G has always been rooted in biomaterials innovation—from pioneering laundry enzymes in the 1960s to developing cold water enzyme technologies that have saved billions in energy costs. Amy and JC reveal what makes biotech innovations stick in the marketplace (hint: it's all about performance), share candid advice for startups hoping to partner with P&G, and explain why the company views biotech as a critical enabler of both sustainability and superior consumer experiences. They discuss common misconceptions about working with large CPG companies, the importance of reducing ideas to practice, and how P&G's connect-and-develop model creates win-win partnerships that can impact billions of consumers worldwide. Whether you're a biotech founder, investor, or enthusiast curious about how innovative materials make it from lab to everyday products, this conversation offers rare insights into the intersection of consumer goods, biotechnology, and global scale manufacturing.Grow Everything brings the bioeconomy to life. Meet your customer where they want to shop. On the latest episode of the Omnichannel Marketer, I had the pleasure of talking with Sarah McNamara, Executive Vice President & General Manager at Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care and Naturally Serious Skin.Sarah is a beauty industry veteran, having worked at Unilever, L'Oreal, and grew her own beauty brand, Miracle Skin Transformer to $35M in revenue before selling it.Now she oversees Peter Thomas Roth.Peter Thomas Roth started in a doctor's office, but is now a retail powerhouse. It was one of the first brands to launch with Sephora when it came to the US market, and also is present in Sephora locations around the world. Other key channels for Peter Thomas Roth are Ulta Beauty, Amazon, and QVC. Sarah's philosophy is that you need to be where the customer is. That is highly dependent on demographics. PTR is a legacy brand that historically skews to an older demographic. So retail and QVC are big channels for them. Each channel has a unique offering for the demographic that frequents it. And the spread in Ulta is very different from Sephora. She loves department stores herself, but sees it as a shrinking business. Beauty is constantly evolving and experiencing unprecedented digital change. As Sarah says, “You snooze, you lose.” To that end, PTR also has a DTC presence and is active on social media to cater to some Gen X, Z, and even Alpha customers. Her team is actively tinkering with Tiktok shops. She was also relatively early to Amazon, compared to Clinique, another legacy brand that only launched on Amazon a few weeks ago.Sarah views the DTC site as a window into the brand and is in midst of an exciting website revamp going live in August. The PTR website serves loyalists, but she also realizes that every channel has its loyalists. “Some people really just want to buy on Amazon. Others only at Sephora.”At the end of the day, Sarah shares that good marketing is about “understanding where your customers are and making it easy for them to buy in those channels.”Thanks Sarah for sharing your experience and insights.

From sculptural updos, like those worn at the Golden Globes by KPop Demon Hunters singer EJAE, to the joyful, bright eye looks musician Zara Larsson has been embracing, exciting beauty trends are already emerging in 2026. With awards season just ramping up, Vogue beauty editors Margaux Anbouba and Arden Fanning Andrews joined Chioma on The Run-Through this week to share what they anticipate seeing on red carpets in the months ahead. When it comes to predictions, Arden is leaning into what she calls “romantic beauty”— soft makeup and windswept hair — inspired by the return of period dramas this year, including Wuthering Heights (don't forget to join the book club!), Sense and Sensibility, set for release in September, and Netflix's forthcoming Pride and Prejudice series. Margaux thinks we will be opting for “imperfect beauty,” meaning leaning into messier aesthetics online as a pushback against the rise of AI. Both editors (who happen to sport bobs themselves) once again said bobs are a trend to stay, even though they both plan to grow out their hair this year.Earlier in the episode, Vogue Business U.S. editor Maddie Schulz breaks down what's really going on behind the Saks Fifth Avenue bankruptcy and what fashion's “reset” may actually look like. Plus, Chloe and Chioma share their takes on the menswear shows so far and reflect on the passing of the legendary Valentino Garavani. The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture.
