Beauty expert and entrepreneur, Jessica Richards, is the powerhouse behind Brooklyn's premier beauty destination, SHEN Beauty. After graduating from FIT, Richards worked as a stylist for VOGUE and Moda Operandi before transitioning to her passion project - connecting consumers to products that fuel beauty. Richards saw the unique opportunity in the clean beauty space, as the store would be the first of its kind in the metropolitan area that offered a quintessentially cool, curated range of effective, niche and luxury beauty products. SHEN Beauty opened its doors in 2010 in Cobble Hill. “When I first opened the doors to SHEN Beauty, I wanted to bring beauty to Brooklyn, or rather create Brooklyn beauty from what I understood about the area and my neighbors, and what they wanted and what inspired them.” Considered a pioneer in the evolution of beauty retail, Jessica's keen sense of curation is the secret to how she has successfully launched over 70 brands at SHEN Beauty, including ILIA, Kosås, Lanolips, Haoma, Pai Skincare, Ellis Brooklyn, Vintner's Daughter, Aurelia and May Lindstrom. Richards' passion is connecting consumers to products that fuel beauty – both inside and out. Prior to opening SHEN Beauty, Jessica has had a seasoned career cultivating beauty and wellness brands to their fullest potential. From the early stages of her career at Lucky Magazine working hand in hand with Eva Chen as the magazine's brand curator to then becoming the Senior Beauty Buyer starting Free People Beauty, Jessica has always had a keen eye for bringing unique wellness brands to the forefront. Thanks to her success with SHEN Beauty, Jessica continues to serve as a consultant for wellness brands across the globe. Additionally, Jessica has spoken at several national panels such as the Indie Beauty Expo, Founder Made, and CEW. Due to the buzz surrounding SHEN Beauty, Richards was hand selected by goop founder Gwenyth Paltorow to grow their wellness division. The category is booming and often mentioned as having the potential for becoming the next trillion dollar industry. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/skincareanarchy/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/skincareanarchy/support

If you have seen "Inside," you know that it is pretty unique as far as comedy specials go. It was shot entirely by Bo during the course of the pandemic inside of his LA guest house and touches on very millennial themes, such as the effects of the internet and social media on our collective mental health and his mental health specifically, anti-capitalism, turning 30 and thinking about what you have accomplished thus far in your life. We talk with Shreye Saxena (his 4th appearance on the show, making him the most featured guest!) about his thoughts on the show, ranging from its depiction of mental health, the commodification of wokeness, and the constant balance of authenticity vs. performativity ever since we started expecting depictions people's real lives instead of made-up stories due to YouTube, Instagram, and other elements of media that have turned the cameras back on everyday people instead of just celebrities and movie stars. I have to be honest – lanolin can be a real pain for anyone who's allergic to it. If you've never heard of lanolin and you're struggling with mystery “contact” dermatitis, it could be worthwhile asking your dermatologist or allergist to do a patch test. While lanolin allergies aren't that common, they are tricky to navigate since lanolin is not required to be labeled and can hide quite sneakily in products you probably take daily (and would never suspect). Since I'm all about helping people connect the dots, this seems like the perfect opportunity to discuss lanolin and its connection with vitamin D. I know you'll find this fascinating, so get ready to do a quick dive into lanolin – a commonly used ingredient used in popular skincare products and daily supplements. In this episode: What is lanolin (and where does it come from)? How would you find out if you are allergic to it? Where it is found in skincare Lanolin + vitamin D issue Other names for lanolin Extensive (but not complete) list of products containing lanolin Quotes: Research shows an increase in sensitization between 2004 and 2015 with data from 2019 showing that a lanolin allergy impacted up to 1.2% of those in the test group. Lanolin isn't a required allergen to be listed on labels which is why it hides in so many products!

This is a podcast about digital and ecommerce, so you already know we're big fans of the internet. It's a portal and a tool to give you direct access to consumers, information, and communication unlike anything that's ever existed before. And if you're living here in 2022 and expecting to thrive as a business owner, you better be tapping into every possible resource the internet has to offer. Alli Reed has known that for more than a decade, and her company, Stratia Skincare, got its start in large part thanks to the wealth of beauty and skincare knowledge Alli tapped into to turn an interest into a side hustle and then grow it into a multi-million dollar brand. On this episode of Up Next in Commerce, I talked to Alli about how she turned her hours on Reddit into a brand that keeps growing, and we talked about all the ways to attract customers, differentiate yourself, and what it takes to educate the consumer beyond just knowing what your brand is, but also what it stands for and how it operates. Enjoy!Main Takeaways:The Reddit Goldmine: If you are looking for an engaged audience, Reddit is one of the best places on the internet to find some. But beware, not only are Redditors engaged, they are hyper-aware of any kind of inauthentic promotion or pushing of brands. When you show up on Reddit, you have to be authentic, and in return, you will see active, informed, and oftentimes helpful folks who can take your market research to another level.Don't Take Our Word For It: In categories that require a bit more effort to convert customers, it's helpful to rely on UGC and customer reviews. Rather than asking potential customers to trust you the brand, ask them to trust their peers who are singing your praises. That's a much easier and quicker way to get someone to pull the trigger than trying to convince them just based on your marketing materials. You're Not What You're Not: There is always a rush to be the first to be certain ingredient-free. Whether it's paraben-free, gluten-free, cruelty-free, or anything else, don't let the marketing angle of being XYZ-thing-free be your crutch. Find a way to differentiate yourself that actually has a basis in need, science, or data rather than being the first to be “anything-free.”For an in-depth look at this episode, check out the full transcript below. A pessimist is someone who looks for the calamity within every opportunity. They natively seek out what could go wrong and the reasons not to seize a possibility like a heat-seeking missile whizzes towards its target. You are a possibilitarian. A POIV [Person of Immense Vision]. A hopefulist and a radical enthusiast. The more you own your power and develop the exceptional confidence that comes with making your fantasies real, the bigger your dreams will get. And when that happens, even more people will think you're weird. And foolish. And wrong. Those who condemn you are locked in their limited beliefs and terrified of their own bigness. That magic that was awake within them when they were kids has been stuffed deep into their darkest natures through life's trials and corresponding traumas. And so they know not what they do.Their criticism is awesome soil within which to grow your faith in yourself. And your ironclad trust in your finest instincts. Bless them rather than cursing them. For they are helping your rise.If you're ready to make 2022 the single happiest, healthiest and most productive year of your life yet with Robin Sharma as your mentor...He has just released a VERY special new online course based on his #1 global bestseller The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari. This truly remarkable 30-Day Challenge offers you hours of world-class training and takes you well beyond what you learned in The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari book that so many people around the world have fallen in love with. Architects of the underworld

You've probably seen those lists of the so-called “wonders of the world.” Many are works of architecture: the Great Wall, the pyramids, the colosseum, Taj Mahal. But these lists are, in a sense, always incomplete. Our world holds other architectural wonders, after all—albeit ones that are hidden from human eyes, made from different materials, and a bit scaled down. I'm talking, of course, about the wonders of the underworld. I'm talking about ant nests. My guest today is Dr. Walter Tschinkel. Walter is an Emeritus Professor of Biological Science at Florida State University, where he's led a distinguished career as a myrmecologist—a scientist who studies ants. He's the author of the recent book Ant Architecture: The Wonder, Beauty, and Science of Underground Nests. For decades now, Walter has been delving into ant colonies using a variety of creative, homegrown techniques. Foremost among these is his method of “nest casting”—the process of making durable, three-dimensional casts of ant nests. In this conversation, Walter and I do a bit of “Ants 101.” We discuss the notion of ant colonies as superorganisms. We talk about how Walter developed his nest-casting technique (not to mention other ingenious methods). We discuss where the blueprint for an ant nest resides, and whether ants might appreciate the beauty of their own nests. We also talk about the scientific process—about the joys of low-tech problem solving, about the importance of negative results, and about the pleasure of pursuing a good scientific mystery.   One last thing I'll mention: a podcast really can't do justice to these ant nests. So be sure check out the show notes below—and also Walter's gorgeously illustrated book—to see these architectural wonders for yourselves. Alright, folks, on to my conversation with Dr. Walter Tschinkel. Enjoy!   Notes and links 5:00 – Dr. E. O. Wilson, one of the starts of myrmecology, recently passed away at the age of 92. Read a recent tribute to him. 6:00 – Dr. Tschinkel's previous book, published in 2013, was The Fire Ants. 6:30 – See a recent popular article about harvester ants. 10:20 – An interactive map showing the diversity of ant species. 15:00 – On the “superorganism” concept, see the book by the same name by Bert Hölldobler & E. O. Wilson. 20:30 – A figure from an academic paper showing the excavation of a giant leafcutter ant colony in Brazil. See also this 2012 popular article. 24:05 – A photo of Dr. Tschinkel's original plaster cast that has made the rounds on the internet. You can also view numerous other images of Dr. Tschinkel's nest casts in this recent paper. Finally, check out this recent video showcasing some of Dr. Tschinkel's methods and nest casts. 29:00 – A recent paper on the division of labor in leafcutter ants, and another paper critiquing the concept of division of labor as applied to ants. 38:30 – A recent editorial on null results in science. 39:00 – An article by Dr. Tschinkel describing his technique for building artificial ice nests. 43:00 – A photo showing the contrast between the charcoal-covered nest disk of an old harvester ant colony with the in-progress (uncharcoaled) nest disk of a new colony. 54:15 – Here Dr. Tschinkel is referring to two books: On size and life, and Scaling: Why is animal size so important? 56:00 – A recent article on the so-called “insect apocalypse.”   Dr. Tschinkel recommends the following books: The Ants, by Bert Hölldobler & E. O. Wilson The Superorganism, by Bert Hölldobler & E. O. Wilson The Guests of Ants, by Bert Hölldobler & Christina Kwapich For more on ant architecture, be sure to check out Dr. Tschinkel's fascinating book!   Many Minds is a project of the Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute (DISI) (https://disi.org), which is made possible by a generous grant from the Templeton World Charity Foundation to UCLA. January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and we are so grateful to have the CEO of local Nashville social enterprise company, Strings for Hope, to share their mission with us. Strings for Hope repurposes secondhand musical strings to make beautiful jewelry, all made by survivors of addiction, domestic violence, and human trafficking with the mission to empower and employ women in recovery. Emily Winters took over the company as CEO at just 21 years-old and has since brought tremendous growth and expansion, with retail partners carrying Strings for Hope products all across the US. In spite of her lack of experience at the time, Emily fell in love with the survivors SFH employs and set out to build the company as one that could continue to support part- and full-time employees in recovery. Even at a young age, she realized “if I let this fail, I could get another job, but many of these women couldn't.” Her whole focus became about them, and it remains about them even as the company grows.  “I felt like I saw opportunities for the broken strings [and women] that a lot of people couldn't see. What we do is provide these women a choice and an opportunity with work. I'm just happy I can play that role [in their lives] with my business.” Not only has she thrived as the leader of this gives-back company, she has also found remarkable beauty from the brokenness of her own story. As a survivor of domestic and sexual abuse by her alcoholic step-father, Emily has personally discovered the power that comes when we allow our own pain and trauma to become tools to empower and encourage others.   “My story allows me to bring a sense of safety to these women and be an ally to them. As a young leader who ultimately doesn't have a background in business or working with survivors, the pain of my past has made me feel worthy of being in this place.” No matter how isolated we feel or what shame surrounds our past, none of us are ever truly alone in our pain, are we? Past traumas and wounds don't make us weak. As Emily attests, they can become tools for us to be better, more compassionate leaders. There truly is beauty in brokenness if we have the courage to uncover it.  How do we support, follow, and shop SFH? www.stringsforhope.com *Retail partners & pop-ups all across US

The game is changing and younger and younger people are pushing the boundaries of what is great! Not everyone is destined to go into medicine or even be a chef, but nowadays you can start as one thing and flip the script one hundred and eighty degrees overnight. It used to be popular to stay in a field for your whole life but we see it now more than ever that if you hate the situation you are in, well change it! Or better than that, if you think you can do it better then hop right in and take your shot. That is exactly what people like Jake and Logan Paul are doing. Today on the Friends in Beauty Podcast I welcome the CEO + Founder of Tress Obsessed Beauty Vending, Maxine Pittman, to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.   Maxine is a born-and-raised Los Angeles millennial who isn't afraid of hard work, sweat equity, and some faux lashes. Over the years, traveling and beauty have become her two favorite hobbies. Watching Youtube tutorials, practicing makeup looks, and trying out different hairstyles, hair products, and cosmetics in her vanity mirror. Her passion became beauty, travel, and people.    Originally, pre-covid, Maxine had a bright idea to open the first 24-hour beauty supply in Los Angeles! But then - covid hit. And, after a late-night heart-to-heart conversation with her mentor, Maxine had to think on her feet and realized she needed to pivot and adapt quickly!   Maxine realized the shopping landscape was changing. She had always wanted to do vending machines in college, but didn't have the money to do it and didn't know what she wanted to sell in the machines. Then, she had a bright idea - why not offer travel-sized beauty supply items in a vending machine!   She remembered traveling all over the world, to the Middle East, to Europe, to the Caribbean, all over Mexico and only one thing was common on all of her travels: none of the hotels or resorts she ever stayed in offered complimentary travel-size products catered towards women of color.   Maxine decided to rebrand and evolve because she was exhausted and saddened to see women of color left out, yet again in the beauty industry. And from their Tress Obsessed Beauty Vending was born.   I had such a great time chatting with Maxine. I've always been fascinated by beauty vending machines so it was very refreshing to have her share her experience with us. And we even found out that we have something major in common that's a first for the FIB Podcast.  In this interview Maxine shares:   -Her inspiration for starting Tress Obsessed Beauty Vending -The start-up costs associated with getting the business running -A typical day in the life of running her brand -Her strategy for choosing profitable locations -The earning potential of having a beauty vending machine business -Her plans for expansion and tips for getting started   So, if you want to start a beauty vending machine biz or if you are frustrated with throwing away oversized beauty products at the airport during TSA pre-checks, or you need travel-size minis for your suitcase, gym bag, or overnight bag - look no further. Maxine has got you covered.   Let's go ahead and jump into this awesome conversation with Maxine + if you prefer to watch then tune in on YouTube.   Don't forget to share with another #FriendinBeauty.   Enjoy this episode!   Leave us a 5 star review and share this episode with a friend or 2 or 3. info@friendsinbeauty.com   Resources Mentioned In This Episode:   -Planoly Additional Resources:   -https://www.amazon.com/shop/akuarobinson   -Skillshare - Use this link for 2 months free of the premium plan: https://skl.sh/30t352q   -Shop Mented Cosmetics - https://www.mentedcosmetics.com/?rfsn=1290937.f2481  Use Code “AKUAROBINSON” for 10% of your purchase  Announcements:   We're on Apple Podcasts - www.bit.ly/FIBPodItunes!   Join our Facebook community…   If  you're looking for a community of like minded, ambitious, and supportive #FriendsinBeauty all working to leave our mark on the beauty industry, join us here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/friendsinbeauty Join the Friends in Beauty Mailing List: www.bit.ly/FIBTribe Social Media Info: Tress Obsessed (Instagram) - @tressobsessedla Tress Obsessed (Website) -https://www.mytressobsessed.com Friends in Beauty (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) - @friendsinbeauty Friends in Beauty (YouTube) - Friends in Beauty https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcYPyO8nAosEmjEE5nza9Zg?view_as=subscriber Akua Robinson (Instagram,Twitter) - @akuarobinson AkuaRobinson (Facebook) - Akua Robinson MUA Akua Robinson (Website) - www.akuarobinson.com   #FriendsinBeauty #FIBPodcast

ep | 105 I wasn't planning on creating this episode, but after receiving so (!) many questions from you and messages from my Highest Self, I am going much deeper today on peaceful separation and consciously uncoupling. This is a Q&A episode and I've split the questions into three categories: Breakdown, Breakthrough and Children. I truly hope that this episode supports you and the situations that so many of you are moving through while also reminding you the beauty and power (and simplicity) of soul work, and these beautiful words from the Pinnacle: “You are made of love and grace, beautifully and collectively woven through the human race, you are one with each other." Love and blessings!      LINKS The Galactic Activation Clear the Line - 22% off with NEW22 / NEW22PLAN at checkout Retreat with us in Panama– APPLY THIS WEEK Subscribe to our Newsletter @alnwithin on IG January Spotify Playlist How to do a Line Activation Submit a Review Receive Texts from Us
