The Beauty and the Hell of It and Other Stories (Guernica, 2025) conjures up images of women who struggle through difficult transitions, unpleasant encounters, or ghastly boyfriends and husbands. One woman is a lesbian who sees the man who raped her a decade before, another suffers from bipolar disease, and a third is harassed by her professor. Some of them are grieving and others want vindication but few of them are living the lives they'd imagined. And then there's Liam, who is devastated by his young son's death, and who'd always loved the daughter of one of his father's wives. These are beautifully written, sensitive stories about a range of human reactions to the harsh realities of life and death. Lynda Williams is a freelance copyeditor and short fiction writer based in Calgary, Alberta. Her stories have appeared in Grain, The Humber Literary Review, and The New Quarterly, among others. Her literary influences include Raymond Carver, Pam Houston, and Lorrie Moore. This episode was from a conversation with the owner of Sands Coffee Roasters, a new coffeeshop in Oceanside. As we were chatting he was telling me the story of how his make shift coffee trailer came to be. A labor of love, he showed me all the edges where he put things together, he didn't say it was perfect, but there was an inner beauty in the imperfections. When he shared that to me I knew I had my next episode. This also goes back to the philosophy of kintsugi or learning how to mend broken pieces of pottery or other items back together using powdered gold, silver or platinum. It shows the story of the object rather than hiding its imperfections. Annoucements: My good friend Jarrod Dunn founder of the T.A.P. Drawing a vivid contrast between Sarah's inner beauty and Jezebel's artificial beauty, Dr. Nathaniel Wilson explains how holiness is not just outward appearance but the inward glory of Christ shining through His people in these end times.

Janna Faith tackles the anxiety many girls feel about appearance and self-image, showing from Scripture that true beauty starts on the inside. Drawing on Ezekiel 16, 1 Peter 3, and 1 Timothy 2, she contrasts trusting in outward beauty with trusting the Lord, exposes common “mirror myths,” and offers practical steps to grow inner character. The episode closes with heart-searching questions that move listeners from comparison to Christ-centered confidence.Topics DiscussedGod's view of beauty (Ezekiel 16; “trusting in your own beauty” vs. trusting God).“Mirror myths,” such as What you see is who you are, What you see is what others see, “If I don't look good enough, I'll never get married.”Biblical modesty and insecurity signals (1 Timothy 2:9) and inward adornment (1 Peter 3:3–4).Comparison traps and imitating others vs. living God's unique design for you.Beauty's brevity vs. character's permanence; cultivating virtues like faith, mercy, love, and joy.Reflection questions to redirect focus from appearance to Christlike character.Key TakeawaysBeauty isn't bad—idolatry is. God delights to beautify His people, but trusting in beauty derails the heart.Inner virtue = true value. Character, not cosmetics, is what lasts and what people ultimately experience.Comparison kills contentment. Stop copying others; embrace who God made you to be and the mission He's given you.Modesty communicates security. Immodesty often signals inner emptiness; a meek and quiet spirit is precious to God.Grow the inside on purpose. Pray specific prayers to develop faith, mercy, love, and joy—and talk about things that matter.Faith Talks is a monthly program on the Thee Generation podcast designed to help young ladies discover greater ways to nurture and exercise their faith in their day-to-day walk with Christ. Abby and Patrick are joined by Dr. Josh West to talk about some remarkable developments in psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy in Australia. Josh explains to Abby and Patrick how the clinical trials he describes are better understood as an experiment in sustained psychotherapy rather than just testing a new drug, and how that experiment has profound psychoanalytic and psychodynamic salience. From the process of patient preparation to the details of “dose day” to the work of subsequent sessions of “integration,” Josh walks Abby and Patrick through how he and other clinicians do their work, and how they tackle the unique demands of maintaining a holding environment, navigating transference, precipitating psychic change, and providing help to patients who are working through end of life crises, longstanding pathologies, and other kinds of profound distress. Along the way, he provides vital context about the history of lab-based psychedelic research and the (mis)appropriation of indigenous traditions while assessing the practical, ethical, and legal challenges that arise when psychedelics become objects of psychopharmacological study, routinized treatment, and corporate investment. Josh's suggestions for further reading include: Michael Pollan, How to Change Your Mind Marc B. What happens when a book about sex work, patriarchy, and motherhood collides with our own messy stories of choice, pregnancy, and parenting? Pure Real Talk and the reality: Motherhood is never simple. In this episode, Stacy and Daynah dive into *spoiler alert* Margo's Got Money Trouble and end up everywhere from pottery-as-therapy and day drinking confessions to abortion stigma, single mom survival, and postpartum euphoria (yes, it's real). They unpack the way beauty is currency, the patriarchy still shapes every decision, and how women just keep holding it all together. And because it's us, we also detour through tramp stamps, 90s nostalgia, and the pop culture comfort food of Netflix binges. It's sharp, heartfelt, occasionally irreverent, and exactly the kind of conversation your group text wishes it was having.
