I'm going to make a big claim: This will probably be the most sweeping, inspiring conversation on beauty you'll hear in your life. I say this with such confidence because Brook Hensley changed the way I understand beauty. And she's about to do the same for you. Over the next several weeks, we're going to focus deeply on the story of our beauty and our bodies—what the story is, who is telling it to us, and what needs to change. But before we get into the flesh-and-bones of it all, I want to talk about beauty as a concept. Why, oh why, does it matter to us so much? That's where Brook comes in. This brilliant friend of mine is inviting you and me into a surprising and subversive new way of thinking about beauty. Join in on this unmissable conversation to understand… What the “third way” of beauty means for your life Why beauty and vanity are not the same thing How beauty can be an act of resistance and rebellion If you're waiting to unlock a mind-blowing expansion of your relationship to beauty, this episode is for you. Scalp psoriasis affects nearly half of those with psoriasis, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and challenging forms of psoriasis to get under control. If you're reading this, you might already know how awful the itching, flaking, and emotional toll can be. Especially as many medications for psoriasis don't seem to work nearly as well for psoriasis on your scalp.Unfortunately, many people assume their scalp issues are due to dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis when, in fact, they are dealing with something far more complex. Especially as the inflammation worsens, there's a greater risk that the hair thinning could turn out to become permanent hair loss. That's why I'm thrilled to have Dr. Jenny Bennett back on the Healthy Skin Show. Together, we unpack the complexities of scalp psoriasis AND talk about some really fascinating organisms that could be lurking on the skin that are helping to drive the problem.Dr. Bennett is a naturopathic doctor, acupuncturist and founder of Aria Integrative Medicine, an autoimmune specialty clinic in Seattle, WA. She utilizes treatments from both Eastern and Western medical practices to find the best approach for treating autoimmune diseases. Dr. Bennett treats a wide variety of conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Graves' Disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus and scleroderma. You might recall that Dr. Bennett has shared her knowledge with us in the past on Psoriatic Arthritis and Nail Psoriasis. If you're tired of the relentless itching, worried about thinning hair, or unsure where to begin, this scalp psoriasis episode is packed with actionable insights.Let's dive in!In This Episode:Scalp psoriasis versus plaque psoriasisThe link between scalp psoriasis + psoriatic arthritisKey differences between scalp psoriasis + seborrheic dermatitisHow both your skin + gut microbiomes play a critical role in scalp inflammationWhy hormonal changes + stress trigger scalp psoriasis flaresTreatment options – scalp psoriasis meds + remediesUsing UVB + red light therapy to help scalp psoriasisCan scalp psoriasis cause hair loss?Quotes“Scalp psoriasis is often mistaken for dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, but the key difference is in the texture—psoriasis feels dry, while seborrheic dermatitis feels oily.”“Psoriasis always starts with damage to the top layer of skin, which allows bacteria or fungi to get inside, triggering an immune response and creating plaques.”LinksFind Dr. Bennett online | Instagram | Facebook | TikTokHealthy Skin Show ep. 359: Finger + Toe Nail Psoriasis vs Fungus Infection (How To Tell The Difference)Healthy Skin Show ep. 336: Early Signs & Symptoms Of Psoriatic Arthritis (Don't Ignore These!)Research progress on the neutrophil components and their interactions with immune cells in the development of psoriasisScalp Psoriasis: A Literature Review of Effective Therapies and Updated Recommendations for Practical ManagementBacteria, Fungi, and Scalp Psoriasis: Understanding the Role of the Microbiome in Disease Severity

What if happiness is the key to unlocking the soul's true beauty and potential? Join us as we explore the profound connection between joy, the soul, and our spiritual journeys. Drawing from the mystical teachings of the Talmud, we discuss the soul's temporary residence in our bodies and its quest for perfection and closeness to Hashem. We'll share inspiring stories, including how two men were recognized by Elijah the prophet for their infectious joy and ability to uplift others. This episode highlights the delicate balance within Judaism, where laughter and joy are used to open hearts and minds while cautioning against the pitfalls of excessive mockery and sadness. Listen to the tale of the Magid of Jerusalem, who masterfully used humor to make Torah teachings more accessible, illustrating the transformative power of happiness.Continuing on this joyful journey, we examine how a sense of joy enhances the observance of mitzvahs, making religious practice more fulfilling and spiritually uplifting. Our discussion emphasizes the importance of nurturing simcha, the joy that is a mitzvah in itself, and how it can empower us to achieve greatness. By recognizing the beauty and perfection in the Torah, we uncover immense happiness that can transform our spiritual experience. Whether it's through joyful learning or the heartwarming practice of commandments, maintaining a sense of joy and comfort is crucial. Have you ever felt like there was something you wanted to do — like write a book or take an improv class or start a yoga practice — but you were avoiding it because you hate the feeling of being a beginner? It can be uncomfortable to not know what’s coming next, to make mistakes, to feel out of place, to wobble or stutter or unknowingly break decorum. And yet reconnecting with the beginner in you is also liberating. There’s a freedom that comes with lowering your expectations, with waiting for cues, with learning as you go and even taking the pressure off for a performance of any kind. In today’s episode, we’ll talk about the importance of being a beginner in all aspects of life and talk about how we can reconnect with the beginner in each of us. How can we live a life of both humility and resilience, whether in good times or bad? How do we respond in joy and crisis? Today we welcome Rabbi Steve Leder who talks about the recent devastating fires in Los Angeles and how to cultivate tools to use when tragedy strikes. He talks about tending to our inner lives and how important it is to be of service to others. We receive comfort, even in the midst of our suffering, when we reach out to help others. We may all experience stress and trauma at various times in our lives. Success can ruin people the same way disaster can. Rabbi Leder reminds us to always live in the present and know, “This too shall pass,” whether it's in good times or bad. We can move forward, and he teaches us to not regret the past. We cannot change it. When we worry about the future, we are not changing it, and that can cause anxiety. Catastrophic thinking does us no good. We do not know what is going to happen. It causes us to feel constant stress. If we can be more in the moment, even for smaller periods of time, it can help us feel much more resilient. It makes a huge difference to be mindful. This also requires a level of faith and spirituality. Rabbi Leder explains about the meaning of prayer. Most people ask for something when they pray. Yet, it is not always about appealing to God. He explains that this is about trying to change ourselves from within. It's not looking outside to a deity; it's about looking inside and realizing we do know how to navigate our circumstances. If you've overcome obstacles in the past, you can overcome them again. How do you do this? How do you find a way? We have the answers within. Rabbi Leder suggests, “When you must, you can.” We go through various emotions – faith, anger, grief, and ultimately resilience. Don't let the fire go out in you. Don't let your spark fade. When we stay in the present, we can move forward. Rabbi Leder is the author of several books including “More Beautiful Than Before: How Suffering Transforms Us,” “The Beauty of What Remains: How Our Greatest Fear Becomes Our Greatest Gift,” and his most recent “For You When I Am Gone.” He is the Senior Rabbi Emeritus of Wilshire Boulevard Temple, a prestigious synagogue in Los Angeles with three campuses and 3,000 families. How to make people like you? How to understand people and your own behavior? Sometimes we do something weird and then think, ‘What was the logic of my behavior?' In fact, there's always some logic, but most often it hides in certain peculiarities of your mind. We're going to tell you about ten psychological effects that affect you almost every day. TIMESTAMPS The Anchoring Effect 0:41 Deflection to the Result 1:10 The Paradox of Choice 1:39 Clustering Illusion 2:07 Pratfall Effect 2:29 The Kuleshov Effect 2:53 "Body Negative" 3:42 Survivorship Bias 4:02 Hard-to-Reach Effect 4:28 The Fear of Beauty 4:51 SUMMARY People feel it much easier to evaluate something if they have the original price (even if it's wrong) as a kind of anchor. We often judge the correctness of a decision by the final result, not by the actions taken to achieve it. This effect is often used by those ads which concentrate you only on the final result (for example, on buying). The paradox of choice says that the more options there are, the less the possibility we'll be happy with our final choice. Clustering Illusioт is characterized by the tendency to see a certain system in random coincidences. This especially applies to gamblers and lovers of fate signs. Perfection is repulsive, and mistakes are attractive — they make us more human. That's why you shouldn't get too upset having stumbled in front of anyone. The effect when a viewer, after seeing two unrelated frames, unconsciously makes up a logical connection between them is called the Kuleshov effect. "Body negative" is a condition where a person thinks they're ugly, and this is why their personal life is a fail. And their whole life is a fail. Most often we judge a situation only by successful people ("survivors"), and that's why we know just one side of it. For example, we envy a businessperson who got rich selling Bengal lights, but we don't know how many businesspeople failed with them. Even if we look at it from a human level: closed, high-status, "no-one-knows-what's-on-their-mind" people always seem more attractive than others. Some people feel excessive tension next to beautiful people: excitement, double control of one's actions, the desire to save face, and fear of comparison. Such stress doesn't arise next to an average person. Do you know any interesting psychological tricks that help in communicating with anyone? Share them in the comments! Questions answered this episode: 1. I'm 21, finishing up college soon and have been fighting for the past 6 years to overcome an addiction to porn and masturbation that started when I was first exposed to porn in 4th grade. The past 2 years have been especially tumultuous with lots of victory and defeat. However I believe God has been allowing these setbacks in order to purify me in numerous ways. Recently I started going on dates with a good friend of mine. As a result, I've noticed two particularly concerning things in myself. 1: I feel like I've resigned myself to the fact that God is the only one who would ever accept me. I can't imagine someone knowing everything about me and still loving me fully. I want to be loved by more than just God but I see that as a fantasy. 2: I feel like my battle with porn has left me needing physical therapy for my sexual desire. I feel like I've been so hard against lust that I've lost the ability to experience sexual desire purely. Do you have any recommendations on how to rehabilitate my sexual desire? 2. I'm a physical therapist specializing in pelvic health. I see prenatal and postpartum women, postmenopausal women, and men who also may suffer from pelvic pain or pelvic surgery. This is a wonderful profession which also opens a door to see a lot of suffering and life challenges. In my work I meet people from all walks of life and belief systems who are experiencing pain and sometimes trauma. Lately I've been asking myself how I can best help people when the help they want is not in keeping with my catholic faith. These are matters around sex, gender and all the values and teachings that come with these. How do I practice and stay true to my faith. Can I treat them according to their goals and tell myself is between them and God or am I complicit in their sin? 3. How can I learn to embrace my masculinity in a healthy way when sometimes I do not feel like a complete normal man since I only have 1 testicle. I've always felt a little shy and inadequate even though I've excelled in many areas of life. Ask Christopher West is a weekly podcast in which Theology of the Body Institute President Christopher West and his beloved wife Wendy share their humor and wisdom, answering questions about marriage, relationships, life, and the Catholic faith, all in light of John Paul II's beautiful teachings on the Theology of the Body.
