A group of young men in the besieged town of Darayya came together to build a secret library during the Syrian civil war, which started in 2011 and ended in 2024. Braving snipers and bombardment, they rescued thousands of books from bombed-out buildings to rehouse. The library was a symbol of hope for a community fractured by war. In this episode of Two Pastors and a Mic, Cory and Channock tackle one of the hardest parts of growth: what happens when you change…but the people around you don't. If you've gone through deconstruction, started holding your beliefs more loosely, or found yourself living with more nuance, you've probably felt the tension at the dinner table—Do I speak up? Stay quiet? Change the subject? Because the truth is, most of the time the tension isn't even theological… it's relational. They talk honestly about why your growth can feel threatening to others (even when you're not trying to change anyone), the unspoken agreements relationships can be built on, and the three common temptations that show up in this season: shrinking, proving, or withdrawing. From there, they give five practical tools to help you stay connected without losing yourself—how to lead with curiosity, stop managing other people's reactions, and build safe spaces where you don't have to translate your entire journey just to be understood. If you've felt misunderstood, exhausted, or tempted to pull back from the people you love, this one is for you.In this episode:Why the tension isn't theological—it's relationalThe 3 temptations: shrink, prove, withdraw5 practical tools for staying connected while you growWhen distance is wisdom (boundaries, not punishment)Staying grounded in who you're becoming00:00 - Welcome Back + Quick Banter00:45 - Share the Episode + 26 Life Theme (1 John 2:6)01:34 - Recap: Deconstruction, Stuck Seasons, Staying Tender02:20 - Recap: Rebuilding Trust (Brené Brown's BRAVING)02:50 - Recap: Living Without Certainty (The Sin of Certainty)03:22 - Today's Topic: When You Change but Others Don't04:08 - The Real Tension: Family, Friends, and Staying Connected05:08 - When People Speak in Absolutes + You Feel Misunderstood06:17 - Dinner Table Moment: Speak Up, Stay Quiet, or Shift Topics?07:30 - It's Not Theological—It's Relational Risk09:20 - When Your Shift Feels Threatening to Others10:16 - Unspoken Agreements: “We've Always Believed This”11:34 - 3 Temptations: Shrink, Prove, or Withdraw12:15 - Temptation 1: Shrinking to Keep the Room Calm13:16 - Temptation 2: Proving It (Over-explaining, Articles, Debates)14:01 - Temptation 3: Withdrawing Fully (Exhaustion + New Language)16:06 - 5 Practical Tools for Connection (Overview)17:23 - Tool 1: Decide What's Worth Discussing (Hill vs Habit)19:42 - Tool 2: Lead With Curiosity, Not Correction20:36 - Tool 3: Let Go of Being Understood Immediately21:45 - Tool 4: Stop Managing Their Reaction22:20 - Tool 5: Build New Safe Spaces (Relational Oxygen)23:27 - When Distance Is Wise (Boundaries, Not Punishment)24:42 - Stay Grounded in Who You're Becoming27:11 - Next Week: Reconstruction vs Deconstruction (Which Is Harder?)27:44 - Hockey Sidebar: Team USA Beats Canada + “Won It for Johnny”28:37 - Closing: You're Loved (Nothing You Can Do About It)

In today's conversation, we're talking about something almost everyone has to rebuild at some point—trust. If you've been dismissed, disappointed, shunned, or wounded by church culture, you know how quickly trust can fracture… not just with people, but with yourself and even with God. So we break it down like a three-legged stool:✅ rebuilding trust with others✅ rebuilding trust with yourself✅ rebuilding trust with GodAnd then we get super practical by unpacking Brené Brown's “BRAVING” framework—a simple but powerful way to name exactly what was broken, so you can actually rebuild it with clarity (instead of vague “I just don't trust you anymore” statements).Drop a comment: Which part of trust is hardest for you to rebuild—trusting others, trusting yourself, or trusting God?00:00 - Welcome + quick housekeeping (reviews, sharing)02:57 - The “2:6 Life” theme for 2026 (1 John 2:6)03:35 - Recap: deconstruction, stuckness, and staying tender04:18 - Today's focus: rebuilding trust (self, others, God)05:24 - The “three-legged stool” of trust (how each affects the others)06:02 - Why trust matters: you weren't meant to live isolated07:01 - Trust in church spaces: “You don't have to trust us” + earning trust08:05 - Trust is rebuilt through experience, not explanation09:28 - What betrayal/broken trust actually breaks (and why wording matters)13:15 - Nuance: disagreement vs dishonor vs relationship removal15:27 - Layer 1: rebuilding trust with leaders/communities16:24 - Layer 2: rebuilding trust with yourself (discernment + red flags)17:29 - Layer 3: rebuilding trust with God (prayer, numbness, expectations)18:57 - What trust is (and what trust is NOT)20:13 - Introducing Brené Brown's “BRAVING” framework21:34 - B — Boundaries (doors with hinges, not walls)22:54 - R — Reliability (do what you say you'll do)23:50 - A — Accountability (own it, apologize, make amends)24:44 - V — Vault (confidentiality + why it matters)29:34 - I — Integrity (values in action, courage over comfort)29:59 - N — Non-judgment (ask for what you need without shame)30:29 - G — Generosity (most generous interpretation / benefit of the doubt)31:39 - BRAVING recap + why specificity helps rebuild trust32:02 - Next week teaser: living faith without certainty (“the sin of certainty”)32:21 - Closing encouragement + “you're loved” outro

In “Braving the Strings”, we enter a contemplative dialogue on attachment—its origins, its quiet power, and the courage required to loosen its hold.We draw on John Bowlby's attachment theory, our own lived experiences, and philosophical resonances from Irvin D. Yalom's The Schopenhauer Cure:  "A person of high, rare mental gifts who is forced into a job which is merely useful is like a valuable vase decorated with the most beautiful paintings and then used as a kitchen pot" (Chapter 14).This reflection guides our exploration of how emotional bonds are formed and transformed throughout life, and how the tension between inner gifts and external circumstances shapes our attachments. Rather than advocating detachment, we explore the subtle bravery involved in meeting attachment with awareness, allowing its strings to soften through presence, reflection, and care.We close the episode with a creative, art-based invitation, guiding you to identify one current attachment and gently explore how it might be loosened without judgement. We invite you to listen with openness, pause where something resonates, and engage with the creative task if you feel open to it. With care,Valentine & RebeccaSupport the show

We return to the podcast circuit in 2026 to examine Scott Galloway: NYU professor, prolific podcaster, and, more recently, part-time life coach for struggling young men.Joining him on an episode of Modern Wisdom with Chris Williamson, we are invited into one of the few remaining forbidden conversational spaces: men, masculinity, and men's problems. You may have been misled by the relentless popularity of Joe Rogan, Modern Wisdom, The Tucker Carlson Show, Triggernometry, The Diary of a CEO, Huberman Lab, and several dozen adjacent properties into thinking these topics are already discussed at length on a near-weekly basis. Alas, this turns out to be a dangerous illusion. In reality, even mentioning men's issues requires an extended ritual acknowledgement of women, failure to perform which risks immediate cancellation. Braving these cultural headwinds, we wade into manly dialogue about masculinity, sex differences, and male malaise. Along the way, we ponder the intricacies of culture war evolutionary psychology, anthropological wars over Man the Hunter, optimised dosages for manly whingeing, and whether making boys learn French verb conjugations qualifies as a human rights abuse. So get your notebooks ready for some important notes from two of the most masculine men in the modern male podcasting space. This week on Counsel Culture, I sit down with Dr. Beth Kaplan, author of Braving the Workplace, for an honest conversation about belonging, leadership, and what it really means to show up as yourself at work. We explore the tension many people feel between authenticity and fitting in, and why so many professionals silently trade pieces of who they are just to feel accepted. Dr. Kaplan shares practical insights on self-awareness, boundaries, and the role leaders play in creating environments where people feel seen, not just managed. This episode is a reminder: belonging isn't about blending in. It's about being valued for who you are. If you're a leader, aspiring leader, or someone simply trying to navigate culture with integrity, you'll want to hear this one. What You'll Learn Why belonging is deeply personal—not one-size-fits-all How conformity quietly erodes confidence and connection The role self-awareness plays in shaping how we show up The power of vulnerability in leadership How thoughtful, intentional care builds trust and performance Why boundaries and non-negotiables matter in protecting authenticity This show is dedicated to Dr. Kaplan's journey, this conversation is what we make it, this, is Counsel Culture.  Learn more at www.ericbrooker.com | www.drbethkaplan.com

Trust rarely fails with a crash; it thins out through tiny cuts. We unpack how unclear or ignored boundaries chip away at relationships and show practical ways to rebuild trust with clarity, courage, and compassion. Using Brene Brown's BRAVING as a guide, we broaden trust beyond reliability to include accountability, the vault, integrity, nonjudgment, and generosity—starting with boundaries as the first move.We walk through ten common boundary violations leaders often miss: intrusions on privacy, work-life overreach, role oversteps, dismissed emotions, wasted time, autonomy squeezes, tech misuse, neglected health needs, broken confidentiality, and cultural disrespect. You'll hear why most of these slips are unintentional—and why intent doesn't erase impact. Then we translate awareness into action with simple scripts to name a violation, explain the effect, and ask for a new agreement without blaming motives. For teams, we offer clear norms that lower friction: quiet hours, meeting purpose and limits, response-time windows, decision rights, and explicit rules for confidential topics. We share how to model integrity by owning mistakes quickly, how to practice nonjudgment and generosity during feedback, and how to protect autonomy by focusing on outcomes over micromanagement. The result is a culture where people feel safe to speak up, bring energy to the work that matters, and protect the values that keep them well.If this conversation helps you rethink boundaries and trust, subscribe, share it with a colleague who needs it today, and leave a quick review so others can find the show. Tell us: which boundary will you clarify this week?#TrustBuilding #WorkplaceBoundaries #LeadershipSkills #EmotionalIntelligence #BRAVING #BreneBrownInspired #PsychologicalSafety #HealthyTeams #TeamCulture #AccountabilityAtWork #IntegrityInLeadership #Nonjudgment #GenerousAssumptions #WorkplaceRespect #CommunicationSkills #LeadershipDevelopment #BoundarySetting #RepairingTrust #WorkplaceWellbeingI'd love to hear from you! In this podcast, you'll explore what today's leaders truly need, from navigating everyday problem solving to handling tough moments of workplace conflict with steadiness and respect. Episodes dive into setting healthy workplace boundaries, strengthening workplace collaboration, and building the emotional intelligence and emotional agility that make leadership sustainable. It's the second book in the Crimson Ridge series (Vanessa presented book 1 “Chasing The Wild” in episode 79) and it was teased as the nastiest book Vanessa had started to read! This book finds Briar Lane running away from LA to a forgotten family cabin in the woods to escape her unfaithful boyfriend. Briar thought she would be alone, but she found a big, tattooed, ex-bull rider named Stormand Lane…or as she knows him, Uncle Storm. He's not her blood uncle, he's her dad's estranged adopted brother. But still an uncle! While sharing a one room cabin, Storm makes sure to be VERY educational with Briar. This forbidden love story was super steamy, but it will have you wishing they stopped referring to each other as niece and uncle much sooner than they did. Be brave, put on your leather cuff, and have fun at our birthday party because it's just a book! New Episodes out every Tuesday!
