While it's doesn't have a direct English translation, Saudade is the word used to describe "a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia" that is supposedly characteristic of the Portuguese or Brazilian temperament. On today's episode, Joana and Tayo talk with Mixed Mag Editor in Chief and Virgo with the Vision, Carolina Muerkens about the history of Brazilian music and its strong but soft hold on this particular emotion, a feeling that is both parts sweet and sticky; forever fleeting until it turns up at your doorstep like an old friend, as if it never strayed too far in the first place. In this episode, Tayo and Joana, alongside the rising pop star Murielle dig deep into the female icons that shaped music and culture. From Aretha Franklin to Janet Jackson- these icons hold a special place in our hearts, minds, and the dance floor. These women challenged the status quo and pushed society to challenge their thoughts on what women could do in the mainstream, all while delivering hit after hit. About Murielle: From leading Destiny's Child rehearsals on the playground to spearheading her own Pop/R&B, Murielle (mu-ree-ELLE) has always interpreted music as a (spiritual and) bodily experience. The Belgium-born, Congolese-American grew up on the sounds of Congolese Gospel, Rumba and Opera mixed with early 2000s R&B and Pop. Paired with the smell of frying plantains, these contrasting soundscapes served as infinite inspiration. Mixing vocal layering techniques of girl groups, ambient electronic elements and heart-beat like percussion, she creates an experience, all in a pop sensible context. Laced in her maman's gold, fresh pressed tips and frosted lip gloss, Murielle is exactly what she looks like: your favorite fearless Black girl making damn good pop music.
