This is the premier and preview episode of the Joyeful Time Traveler Podcast. This podcast is inspired by Deitrah Taylor's love of news magazines, history and culture. The title Joyeful Time Traveler was inspired by Octavia Butler's novel Kindred and the fact that Deitrah is a black southern woman public historian and dramaturg. Dramaturgy is the act of contextualizing a theatrical work for playwrights, production crew, and cast as well as audiences. Public history is historical practice outside of an academic setting. Deitrah holds an MA from Georgia College and State University. In this episode Deitrah takes you to Chicago in the 1920s (by way of her native Georgia) to visit August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom premieres on Netflix December 18, 2020. There are no spoilers in this episode as Deitrah did not get to preview the film, but read the play and provides background information only in this episode. No spoilers. Listeners will also spend time with the legacy of Chadwick Boseman, honor the Gullah Geechees and Deitrah will share her two cents on Netflix's Selena: The Series. Please tell Deitrah what you think and what you may wish to explore in future episodes. https://anchor.fm/undefined/message --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joyefultimetraveler/support
