We attempt open and honest dialectic in the areas of philosophy, religion, modern science, history, and psychology.
“Spiritual bypassing” is a term coined by the late John Welwood to describe a phenomena he was observing in various Buddhist communities he was a part of. Welwood found that people were using religious practice to avoid dealing with “unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and unfinished developmental tasks.” In this episode, we explore the implications of this concept on our collective journey, as well as its impact on emotional development as a whole. We discuss “12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos” by Jordan Peterson. He is a highly polarized figure in many circles, so it can be difficult to engage his work without diving into controversial waters, and there certainly was a concerted effort on our part not to do so. In this episode, we tackle everything from healthy self-talk to the psychological repercussions of believing in “totally depravity” to the way that lobsters fight over territory. We discuss "Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging" by Sebstian Junger. In his book, Junger reflects on combat trauma and the role of community in providing meaning and support for warfighters. The book highlights the contrast between the cohesive, mission-driven community life of the soldier and the individualistic, sometimes isolated nature of peaceful suburban life. In Junger's view, the transition between a focused community and an individualistic one exacerbates the difficulties in recovering from wartime trauma.
