For many girls in Uganda, one opportunity can alter the course of their entire future—and that opportunity often begins with education. Around the world, poverty creates barriers that shape a child's path long before adulthood. But through the work of ministries and local partners, those stories are being rewritten with hope, dignity, and the love of Christ. Aaron Griggs joins the show today to share how Cross International is helping young women stay in school, discover their God-given purpose, and step into a future that once felt out of reach. The Mission: Serving the Most Vulnerable Cross International exists to serve some of the world's poorest and most vulnerable children and families for the glory of God. Rather than operating independently, the ministry works through trusted local churches and organizations across Africa and other regions—partners who understand the communities, relationships, and long-term needs on the ground. This approach allows them to provide immediate help—such as food, clean water, and education—while also fostering sustainable, long-term change. Local leaders remain present long after programs begin, ensuring care that is relational, consistent, and rooted in the Gospel. The Everyday Realities of Poverty For many families in countries like Uganda, Malawi, and Zambia, daily challenges are not simply inconvenient—they are life-altering. A single meal may be the only food a child receives all day. Clean water often requires walking for hours to contaminated sources. Preventable diseases spread quickly due to limited medical care. Education is frequently out of reach because families cannot afford school fees. When children cannot attend school, their opportunities shrink dramatically. For girls in particular, the consequences are often more severe—and more permanent. Why Girls Are Especially Vulnerable When resources are scarce, girls are often the first to be pulled out of school. In some communities, families facing desperate financial strain may feel forced to arrange early marriages for daughters—sometimes as young as 11 or 12—simply to survive. This leads to a heartbreaking cycle: Education ends early Marriage and motherhood begin prematurely Economic opportunities disappear Poverty passes from one generation to the next Without intervention, the very pathway that could break the cycle—education—remains inaccessible. Local Partnership in Action: Project Princess Initiative One of Cross International's key ministry partners in Uganda is the Project Princess Initiative, based in Kampala. Together, they walk alongside vulnerable girls by: Helping them stay in school Providing mentorship and spiritual guidance Teaching practical career and life skills Building confidence rooted in their identity in Christ The goal is not only academic success but whole-person transformation—spiritual, emotional, practical, and relational.  As many girls grow older, something remarkable happens: they begin mentoring others. The hope they received becomes the hope they give. Karen's Story: From Hopelessness to Purpose Karen, a young woman from Uganda, once faced a future filled with uncertainty. After her father abandoned the family, her education stopped. Surrounded by poverty, drugs, and despair, she felt trapped and hopeless. Through Project Princess, everything changed. She returned to school. She encountered mentors who reminded her of her worth in Christ. She discovered a future she never thought possible. Karen eventually attended college and studied economics—an opportunity few girls from her background ever experience. Today, she mentors younger girls facing similar challenges and speaks passionately about the role of faith in her transformation. Her story reflects a powerful truth: when education, mentorship, and the Gospel intersect, lives change. Why Faith Matters in Education Cross International's work centers on more than academics. While education opens doors, true transformation begins in the heart. Their approach focuses on the whole person: Physical needs like food and clean water Emotional support through mentorship Practical training for future careers Spiritual formation through prayer and discipleship Education alone can inform the mind. The Gospel renews the heart and reshapes identity. Together, they empower girls to become who God created them to be. How You Can Get Involved Scripture calls believers to care for the vulnerable. Is there someone in your life whose forgiveness you need? Legendary cowboy actor Roy Rogers said something profound. He said that sometimes it hurts to do the right thing, but afterwards, you'll feel better. When it comes to forgiveness, this certainly applies to choosing to forgive someone who has wronged you. But have you considered that it can be even tougher to ask for someone's forgiveness? Humans hate to fail, and most of us hate looking foolish. It hurts. Maybe you've hurt someone recently, or maybe the hurt happened a long time ago, and it just festers.Luke 6:37 says, “Do not judge and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.” Brenda Blakely knows all about this. The daughter of an alcoholic father, she resented both her parents for years. One day though, she realized that she had internalized her anger so much that it in turn targeted her mother. Brenda called her one day and began pouring out her heart, acknowledging that her bitterness had caused her to be difficult growing up. It was a painful revelation. Yet at the end of the call, her mother's heart was moved. She said to Brenda, “I forgive you, and please forgive me.”Choosing to ask for forgiveness might literally be the hardest thing you ever have to do. Maybe you're not there yet, but keep your mind and your heart open. The end result will be well worth the wait, and think of the person whose forgiveness you're asking. Remember the words of Corrie Ten Boom, who nearly died in a Nazi extermination camp. She said this, “To forgive is to set the prisoner free and to realize that the prisoner was me.” Let's pray. Father, our sinful human nature rebels against humbling ourselves and asking for forgiveness, but give us this practical thing, Father, to be objective and really examine ourselves to see if we've hurt someone and never made amends. This episode I am reading from Admir Serrano's book 'Nights on the Other Side: How I Discovered My Immortality' Nights on the Other Side” is a book that invites us to look at life from a different perspective: more lucid, more open, and less fearful. Bio I am a Brazilian-American researcher, writer and lecturer on paranormal phenomena such as out-of-body experiences (OBEs), near-death experiences (NDEs), deathbed visions (DBVs), after- death communication (ADC), reincarnation, mediumship and the afterlife. And an unabashed believer in our survival of physical death and the immortality of the spirit. My interest in these subjects was triggered after I began having spontaneous OBEs, back in the year 2000, and I wanted to understand the phenomenon. Since then, I have had hundreds of lucid and amazing experiences which have proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are immortal beings. Aware of the sadness that death of a loved one can cause – and I have experienced it myself – I have made it my life's mission to spread the notion that there is no death, that only the body dies, and since we are not our body, we survive death – unscathed. For my own edification regarding the dynamics of physical death, I have worked as a hospice volunteer providing spiritual support to terminally ill patients as they waited for their time to cross over to the other side of life. And this is what death is, a change of worlds, the end of one mode of living, the physical, to the beginning of a spiritual existence. I have bachelor's degrees in psychology and liberal studies, and a master's in theology. I am an avid reader with a broad interest in world and religious history, anthropology, geography, world affairs, and the humanities. I have written five books in my native Portuguese language on death, dying and the afterlife, and two in English on related topics. I write and lecture in both languages, as well as Spanish, the third language I speak. ON SUNDAY February 22, the message is called KINGDOM-FORMED PEOPLE, with Beth Anderson. In Matthew 6, Jesus challenges His followers to examine not just what they do, but why they do it. As He teaches on giving, prayer, and fasting, Jesus shifts the focus from outward appearance to inward formation. Kingdom-formed people don't practice their faith to be seen by others, but to be shaped by the Father who sees in secret. And how we stood there, low beasts among the white oaks, Spanish moss, and spider webs, obsidian shards stuck in our pockets, woodpecker flurry, and I refused to call it so. Spiritual liberation is not about rearranging the contents of the psyche but about stepping back and observing the psyche with clarity. If you do so, you will see that most emotional and mental suffering is rooted in fear: fear of failure, loss, and rejection. Spiritual freedom requires the courage to look upward toward truth, God, and the vastness of the universe while letting go of the deep internal fears that drive our actions. This week I'm talking to Admir Serrano about his book 'Nights on the Other Side: How I Discovered My Immortality' Nights on the Other Side” is a book that invites us to look at life from a different perspective: more lucid, more open, and less fearful. Admir describes out-of-body experiences with clarity, combining his personal testimony with scientific references. But above all, he conveys the sense that we are not alone and that we are something more than we believe. Bio I am a Brazilian-American researcher, writer and lecturer on paranormal phenomena such as out-of-body experiences (OBEs), near-death experiences (NDEs), deathbed visions (DBVs), after- death communication (ADC), reincarnation, mediumship and the afterlife. And an unabashed believer in our survival of physical death and the immortality of the spirit. My interest in these subjects was triggered after I began having spontaneous OBEs, back in the year 2000, and I wanted to understand the phenomenon. Since then, I have had hundreds of lucid and amazing experiences which have proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are immortal beings. Aware of the sadness that death of a loved one can cause – and I have experienced it myself – I have made it my life's mission to spread the notion that there is no death, that only the body dies, and since we are not our body, we survive death – unscathed. For my own edification regarding the dynamics of physical death, I have worked as a hospice volunteer providing spiritual support to terminally ill patients as they waited for their time to cross over to the other side of life. And this is what death is, a change of worlds, the end of one mode of living, the physical, to the beginning of a spiritual existence. I have bachelor's degrees in psychology and liberal studies, and a master's in theology. I am an avid reader with a broad interest in world and religious history, anthropology, geography, world affairs, and the humanities. I have written five books in my native Portuguese language on death, dying and the afterlife, and two in English on related topics. I write and lecture in both languages, as well as Spanish, the third language I speak.
