Fan favorite, award-winning author and journalist Sebastian Junger returns to Independent Americans for a consequential conversation with Paul Rieckhoff. He's always one of our favorites that pulls no punches. On the eve of a divided nation's Election Day, and NYC's race for Mayor dominating global attention, Junger and Rieckhoff take a raw, honest look at democracy under fire, political extremism, masculinity in crisis, and America's struggle for unity. For our weekly installment of “Manosphere Monday,” this candid exchange explores the fallout of economic injustice, failing leadership, class tension, and the search for hope—along with Junger's personal insights from fatherhood to combat reporting. And digs into the strengths and weaknesses of the three men running to be Mayor of New York and face down Trump .Timely, unfiltered, and fiercely independent. Sebastian also shares his unique perspective on democracy under threat, the challenges gripping masculinity today, Veterans Day next week, and the urgent need for unity amidst division. You'll also hear insights on economic justice, leadership, fascism and lessons from the military that America needs now more than ever. And, what it was like to take his little girls trick or treating on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories--and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows.

Blabla. Weißt du was? Was wir brauchen: Zahlen. Daten. Fakten. Klar. Konkret. Messbar. Gibt's Allrad? Lieferzeit? Leasingrate? Finanzierung? Keine Begeisterung. Keine Extra-Meile. Nur Minimalismus. Und weißt du was? Alles Liebe, dein… (du weißt schon

Sebastian Junger is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Storm, Fire, A Death in Belmont, War, Tribe, Freedom, and In My Time of Dying, as well as an award-winning journalist, documentary filmmaker, and, perhaps most impressively, highly accomplished distance runner. A collegiate athlete at Wesleyan University in the early 1980s, Junger has run 3:55 for 1500 meters and 2:21 for the marathon. In this conversation, we talk about his background in running as well as how it's shaped his identity and framed his perspective on writing and life. We also discuss how his relationship to running has evolved over the years, the parallels between competitive running and being in combat — "There's nothing like fear and exhaustion to wipe out your ego," he explains — how he got his start as a journalist and eventually author, the race he's spent his entire life training for, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by: — Tracksmith, New Balance, Precision Fuel & Hydration, and Final Surge. During the COVID pandemic, Junger felt severe abdominal pain while at a remote cabin in Massachusetts. "I thought it was indigestion or something," he recounted. As he was rushed to the hospital, Junger didn't realize that he was hemorrhaging internally as if he were, in his words, "a human hourglass."In this moment of crisis, Junger described a surreal experience where he sensed a black pit opening beneath him. "I just sensed that... if I go into the infinitely black pit, I'm not coming back out," he recalled. That's when his deceased father appeared to him, offering a message of reassurance: "You don't have to fight it. You can come with me. I'll take care of you." Junger's instinctive response was one of resistance, saying, "I'm alive... I'm just in for belly pain." The situation, however, was dire, yet innovative medical techniques were able to stabilize him and save his life.Despite his visions, Junger remains a staunch atheist. He expressed discomfort with the term "afterlife", suggesting that if there is something beyond death, it might instead be explained by the "deep mysteries and contradictions of quantum physics." Although he doesn't subscribe to the notion of a divine plan, he recalled a nurse's advice to view his experience as "something sacred," which resonated deeply with him. "I had come back with sacred knowledge... to help other people face their own mortality," he reflected.----------------------In the second half, astrologer Mark Lerner discussed upcoming astrological cycles and alignments, along with global influences for the remainder of 2024 and into 2025. Lerner began by elaborating on the various branches of astrology. "There are dozens," he noted, also emphasizing the increasing influence of technology: "With AI and computerization, it just keeps growing all the time." Lerner explained that while astrology is driven by celestial bodies, it is fundamentally about synchronicity — the alignment of events and personal experiences with astrological phenomena. The conversation then turned to current global tensions, particularly between Russia and Ukraine. Lerner claimed that while there is potential for nuclear incidents, certain planets indicate that much of Putin's posturing is a strategic bluff. "When he invaded Ukraine, this was when Pluto came back in the United States chart," he explained. The discussion also outlined the astrological influences on certain political figures. Lerner analyzed how Donald Trump's unique chart positions, including the strong influence of Uranus, contribute to his outsider status. "He's a defier of almost everything that normal people would say," Lerner observed. He also highlighted significant astrological events on the horizon, particularly the weekend of December 6-8, which he believes could be pivotal. "Neptune is making its station in Pisces," he pointed out, drawing cosmic parallels to the historical events of December 7, 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. When discussing sun signs, Lerner called out the misconceptions surrounding astrological compatibility. "You can't just analyze people based on their sun signs; it's superficial astrology," he said. Lerner stressed the importance of a comprehensive understanding of one's entire astrological chart. "It's really the whole combination," he insisted.

A violent undiagnosed aneurysm should have killed Sebastian Junger, a war reporter, a best-selling author, and an Academy Award winning documentarian. Junger came as close as anyone we know to dying, but he returned from the abyss and reveals what it was like. For years Jason and Peter have heard about so-called NDE's – near-death experiences where the clinically dead - miraculously resuscitated - come back to life with eerily familiar stories. Whether it's long-dead relatives speaking to them from the afterlife, or encountering an enormous tunnel, illuminated by a brilliant, welcoming light…. are these stories evidence of a “Great Beyond”, or simply wild spasms of a dying brain? After Junger's NDE, he launched an investigation and uncovered a possible third answer that may expand our understanding of the universe itself. Really, no really. *** IN THIS EPISODE: The visions he saw that changed his conception of the universe. Who encouraged him toward the void? What causes similar near-death experiences… God or spasms of a dying brain? Panpsychism: A scientific explanation of a possible and universal post-life existence. Anxiety, derealization & depression, why Sebastian Junger doubted he was alive. He was an atheist…now? Jason and Peter share their out of body experiences. In the summer of 2020, best-selling author Sebastian Junger nearly died. He was rushed to the hospital, and while medical personnel administered emergency care, he slipped out of consciousness. It was then he began to see, and experience, things that he had a hard time explaining. The medical staff were successful, and Junger's life was saved. Junger recently published his reflections on his near-death experience in a new book, “In My Time of Dying.” After hearing Junger interviewed on the Joe Rogan Experience, Brian wanted to dissect the conversation with NDE researcher and expert, John Burke. The close friends sit down to discuss what can be learned from Junger's experience, and how it can influence our lives today. This is the 4th episode in a series around near-death experiences. A Note from James:Imagine you are dying or you're about to die. Let's say you were hit by a car, you're bleeding out, you're on the way to the hospital but you just have this sense that you're not going to live, and you see visions of someone you knew in the past, maybe a mother or a father, and they're saying, "Don't worry, we're here for you." Come down this light at the end of a tunnel. Does that change your experience of life if you then survive? Well, we're going to hear from Sebastian Junger, who wrote "In My Time of Dying: How I Came Face to Face with the Idea of an Afterlife." And if you don't know who Sebastian is, he's written many books about being a war reporter, his experiences in war zones, and other intense situations. But this is perhaps his most intense book that I've read, where he's not talking about deaths on the battlefield or in a war zone, but his own experience of dying and what happened to him during that experience. It really makes you think. And I've been thinking about it a lot for personal reasons this past week. I hope everybody enjoys it.
