After Reagan says, “Can we get a little more nuanced?! Can we have a more interesting conversation than ‘the sky is falling!' We're not political commentators, because that would be boring and lame.” in response to Jaran's report on Rod Dreher's "Live Not by Lies,” we muse on Jordan Peterson's “12 Rules for Life,” prolonging our 35 perilous minutes of talking out loud about books by two controversial characters. In short, we'll go so far as to recommend “12 Rules for Life,” but we think that “Live Not by Lies” is boring.  Live Not by Lies: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53438190-live-not-by-lies  12 Rules for Life: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30257963-12-rules-for-life  Find Reagan at reaganschrock.com; subscribe to his newsletter at reaganschrock.substack.com. As you know, I'm here to help you design fast, deliver strong without stress. That's hat is in the form of workshops, right? But today I'm going to be talking about designing life in general.I'm celebrating and reflecting because I turn 40 this Thursday. What an honour: Every day above ground is a great day.Watch the YouTube recording!Disclaimer: I'm not an Olympic gold medalist. I haven't climbed Everest.  I'm just a type of person who likes having a crack at life, looking for cool opportunities  and  treating life as an experiment. And so I wanted to share some ideas today that reflect how I think about life design.I've summarised these in Leanne's 12 Rules for Life... And what I'm excited about is in two decades, or even in two weeks, I might prove my own rules wrong. The beauty of life is in its ever-evolving nature. Are you approaching a watershed moment in your life, whether it's a milestone, you've had a significant life change? It might be nice for you create your own 12 rules! How do you like to see the world? Here are a sneak peak of my 12 Rules for Life:We're all gonna die: A reminder of our impermanence. If you're feeling like a fish out of water, find a new pond: Adaptability is key.Shake hands with your heroes, they probably have sweaty palms, too: We're all human at the end of the day. There is no glass ceiling: Limitations are often self-imposed.Your clicking reveals your calling: Listen to what resonates with you.Live regionally, work globally: Embrace the vast opportunities the world offers.Be like Tom Cruise in the moments that matter: Show up and give it your best.Find the pattern interrupter in your life: Break monotonies and spark creativity. If you don't have permission, get permission: Advocate for your own desires and goals.Share your work in public: Be open and transparent in your endeavors.Double click everyday moments: Find depth in daily occurrences.Real wealth is discretionary time (Alan Weiss): Time is our most valuable resource. What do you think? Do any of these rules resonate with you? Let me know! The adults were so weak they had to be carried off the shipwreck onto shore… Today, I lead the diabetes business in Medtronic, a global leader in medical devices. The business is about 2.3 billion, with over 5,000 employees. The story of “the person most likely to rule the planet in the future”20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:I find myself not in the mainstream part of these companies, but having a big impact on the future of those companies.A bit of a nomad - three million miles of travel approximately, 3 continents, 3 children, 3 C-suite roles, 7 cities and 10 addresses. My background is in software, in tech, Microsoft was really formative, doing all things on consumer software and services, the precursor to cloud technologies. I then joined Tyco electronics, and then Honeywell recruited me to be its first Chief Commercial Officer, and then I was promoted to lead the software business.A lot of people say [about Medtronic] “Well, that's very different from some of the industrial companies, as well as the software world” and the funny thing is, the concepts are exactly the same.I used to think working on software apps was really exciting and was going to change the world... Let's say, if you make a game on the iPhone, is that as thrilling as applying your brain power and your energy towards something like the area of diabetes, where you can really help people's lives? It's just not!The biggest challenge… I think actually having kids and having a career is a juggling act for everybody, it always comes back to the question of how much should you work.ON TOPIC: Grit and leadership, rags to riches, the making of a leaderWhen you grow, life gives you certain tools depending on how you get brought up. And when you grow up poor, you get a lot of tools. I had to support my mother, I had to find a way to go to college. So I had to think about how do I make a lot of money while going to school. At 16 I started a business and after about a year I had a hundred students. So I converted the garage, my bedroom and the living room into classrooms and I taught all weekend. I made more money doing this than when I got my first job at McKinsey. It takes courage to confront necessity and accept that bad things happen. Half my life I was living in poverty or close to financial ruin and I missed out on a childhood, but every day I picked myself up...Changing the events that are outside you is not possible, but you can change how you view them, that's possible. So why don't you go and focus on changing what's possible and I think to me those lessons help you deal with adversity.Don't be a poser, actually contribute, figure out what is your unique contribution, be really, really good, build your talent stack and then the opportunity will find you. You can compete by being political, by being self-promotional, but you're not really adding value and I want to go to bed every night knowing I did my best and contributed. It's helpful to have a personal board of directors, it's people that you trust and you've built relationships over time that can pull you back from the brink of your excesses or when you have blind spots.Cultivate relationships, do it because they're your friends or they're people you respect and admire, not because it helps you get ahead.ON TOPIC: Diabetes, medtech, health25% of healthcare is spent on diabetes, that's a lot, in the world. There's about 7 million people that have type 1 and type 2 insulin-dependent, that's a lot of people. If you then go to the broader type 2, you're talking about 200 million people that need some sort of medication. Innovation here is: you're putting something in someone's body.

It encourages people to take responsibility, set goals, and engage in activities that contribute to personal growth and a sense of purpose. Tell the truth, or at least don't lie: Honesty is emphasized as a fundamental virtue for leading a meaningful life. Peterson suggests that individuals should be truthful in their words and actions, as dishonesty can lead to personal and societal harm. Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't: This rule promotes active listening and open-mindedness. It encourages individuals to be receptive to the perspectives of others, recognizing that they may possess valuable insights or knowledge that can broaden one's understanding of the world. Be precise in your speech: Peterson emphasizes articulating thoughts clearly and accurately. By using precise language, individuals can enhance communication skills, minimize misunderstandings, and better express their ideas and intentions. Do not bother children when they are skateboarding: This rule suggests that children should be allowed to engage in activities that involve risk and challenge, as they contribute to their development and learning. Peterson advocates for balancing necessary caution with recognizing that exposure to reasonable risk can foster resilience and independence. Jordan Peterson's "Rules for Life" is a book that provides guidance and principles for leading a meaningful and fulfilling life. Here is a summary of rules 1 to 6: Stand up straight with your shoulders back: Peterson emphasizes the importance of adopting a confident and assertive posture, both physically and metaphorically. By embodying strength and resilience, we can face life's challenges more effectively and command respect from others. Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping: This rule encourages self-care and self-compassion. Peterson advises individuals to take care of their physical and mental well-being as they would care for someone they love. By recognizing our worth, we can better contribute to the world. Make friends with people who want the best for you: Surrounding ourselves with positive and supportive individuals can significantly impact our personal growth. Peterson suggests seeking relationships with those who genuinely care about our well-being and aspirations, fostering an environment of mutual encouragement and growth. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today: Instead of falling into the trap of constant comparison with others, Peterson suggests focusing on personal improvement. By evaluating our progress based on our past self, we can set realistic goals and appreciate the journey of self-development. Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them: As a clinical psychologist, Peterson advises parents to set boundaries and provide structure for their children. Parents can help their children grow into responsible and respectable individuals by instilling discipline and teaching them values. Set your house in perfect order before criticizing the world: This rule emphasizes the significance of taking personal responsibility for our lives and surroundings. Peterson suggests starting by improving oneself and addressing the chaos within before attempting to bring positive change to the world. By cultivating order and meaning in our lives, we can become forces of positive transformation. These are just the first six rules, and Peterson's book contains many more principles and insights for navigating the complexities of life. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

12 Rules For Life 12 Rules For Life Full Chapter Book Notes Pain is inevitable in life, but there are ways to alleviate it. This book provides twelve rules for us to abide by, each corresponding to a common life problem. When facing life's conundrums, we should adopt a positive attitude, set goals, engage with issues, solve them, and take responsibility for our lives. When dealing with negative emotions, we should actively find ways to remove obstacles, establish a better outlook, and live a truthful life. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today, we are going to unlock the book 12 Rules for Life, An Antidote to Chaos. If someone says, dignified or worthless, people live like lobsters, would you agree? Don't be so quick to shoot down the idea. Imagine one of your friends serves a lobster at a dinner party and asks everyone's opinion of the impressive dish. What do you think they would say? Probably something along the lines of “Looks delicious!” or “Wow! Such a big lobster!”, right? Then, what if your friend continued by asking, “Who knows if this lobster is a king or a loser?”, most people would find this question laughable. Do lobsters even have such classifications? Yes, in reality, they actually do. Lobsters shed their shells as they grow. When they molt, their bodies become soft, and the lobsters know they need to protect themselves from the outside environment, so finding a safe place to stay is vital. Unfortunately, good places are few and far between. Conflict may erupt when two lobsters have their eyes on the same territory. The Lobsters' fight for territory can be divided into different stages. At first, they may compare pincer sizes to judge which is the biggest. If an inevitable winner can't be decided by such a method, the lobsters will begin a desperate whipping competition using their antennae. Only after that point does the real battle commence. Two lobsters, now worked up and angry, wrestle one another. Each aims to flip the other over onto its back. Sometimes the fight is to the death. But the process of the conflict is not our focus here. What is important is that once the battle is over, the defeated lobster, no matter how brave it was previously, completely loses the will to fight. Even if in the future they encounter lobsters they had defeated in past battles, they will flee rather than fight another time. It seems that after a single failure, the defeated lobster's brain is rewired. The lobster becomes a loser, through and through. Sadly, the same phenomena can happen to humans too. After suffering major blows in their careers or relationships, many people allow themselves to embrace a loser identity. Indeed, living is not always smooth, and we will encounter unexpected pain and suffering throughout life. However, do we really want to accept the life of a loser? Is that a responsible way to face the world? Are there strategies we can adopt to be easier on ourselves? To these questions, in 12 Rules for Life, the author Jordan Peterson provides definite answers. Peterson worked as a dishwasher, a chef, a beekeeper, a worker on an oil field and various other manual-laboring occupations in order to survive. Through his own efforts, he aspired to become a teacher and is now a popular professor, highly respected by his students, and indeed, one of the most important thinkers on the world stage. He has been described by those he has taught as one of their top three life-changing lecturers. In this book, Peterson condenses his research and life experience into twelve rules to help us solve significant life problems, including how to live positively, how to deal with...

“You have the ideal life,” I said. “You think about things. And people pay attention. And you get paid for it.” I was talking to Jordan B. Peterson. His YouTube channel has tens of millions of views. He's a clinical psychologist, professor, and author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, and now a guest on this podcast.People stop him on the street. They say “Thank you.” They say, “You've changed my life.”“What did you say that helped their life?” I asked. But I already knew the answer…Because it's true for me too.He told them what they were ready to hear. That's it. And they acted. Sometimes people thank me. And I tell them “You did it.” Then we take a picture and I feel happy.I asked Jordan about his “12 rules for life.”“I tried to lay out the phenomenal logical landscape of humanity in this book,” Jordan said.I interrupted.“What's phenomenal logical?”“It's life as experienced. Ya know, you think, ‘What's reality?' Well, there's material reality, but that isn't the reality you live. You live a reality that's full of emotions and motivations and personal experiences. That's your reality.”I stayed silent. I was collecting.“But what's the structure of that reality? What's the fundamental structure of the human-lived reality?” he said. “Part of it is suffering because we're finite and limited. But it's suffering that's tainted with malevolence because some of that suffering is unnecessary. You cause it, society causes it. It doesn't have to happen. That's the world we live in. It's hard and it's cruel.”Then he said, “You're stuck with that. That's the bottom line. So how are you going to deal with it?”I think that's the basis of how we live. The answer to that question “how are you going to deal with it?” With losing money, hating your job, getting fired. That's the act. The response is life.He gave me a lot of steps (for dealing with cruelty and suffering). I'll give you some in a minute. But you should also listen to him on the podcast because he gives so much more in that one hour than I could ever collect on this page.STEP 1 – Get in touch with your dissatisfaction.STEP 2 – Take stock of your life (what can you do differently? What are the small steps? Don't actually take them (yet). Just start by learning what you don't like and what you do like in your life right now). Do that for a week. Those steps continue. But he also said this:“You have to choose your pathway of suffering. That's one way of thinking about it. You can choose the suffering that's associated with deceit, arrogance, resentment, bitterness or you can choose the suffering that's associated with truth. The suffering that's associated with truth transcends. It starts to make things better. Deceit makes life worse. And truth makes it better. ”I needed examples—dozens of them.I just kept throwing life problems at Jordan to see what he'd say. He told me how he solves conflicts with his wife. And how he managed his depression. He told me his thoughts on “the grind of life.”Because it's every day. And it's hard. But there are things we can do to make ourselves more okay with our chaos and the chatter between our ears. We can follow rules (like Jordan's) or make our own.I'm doing both.Links and Resources12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan B.
