    The Call Pay Solution Anniversary

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2022 32:10

On this episode of MaxWorth Insights, we're celebrating the anniversary of our first call pay program with the help of the physician leader who made it possible. Over fifteen years ago, Winchester Medical Center, a 495-bed facility in Virginia, was at risk of losing a service line in its emergency department due to a dispute over call pay. MaxWorth was brought on board to help the hospital come up with a sustainable approach to paying for call that would ease agitation and keep its ED fully staffed. At the time, Dr. Tom Oliver, a urologist who had been on staff with the hospital since 1988, was serving as Medical Staff President. Dr. Oliver, along with the lawyers at HortySpringer Law Firm, played an important role in developing our Call Pay Solution. We're proud to be able to say that our first program is still serving its hospital well. But what makes it such an enduring and valuable asset for the hospital's leadership and medical staff? MaxWorth's senior partners, Steve Worthy and Max Hockenberry, sit down with Dr. Oliver to answer that question and discuss the early days of the program. We hope you enjoy their conversation, and we hope it inspires you to find creative and sustainable solutions to your organization's compensation challenges.

Due to the rise in physician employment, recruitment has never been more competitive. There’s a growing need for unique and impactful benefit programs that will attract and retain employed physicians. In this environment, a benefit plan administrator can be your secret weapon in engaging with physician employees and making sure their benefit programs are well communicated and properly administered. But not all plan administrators understand the uniqueness of physician employment. Choosing the wrong partner can have an adverse effect on physician relationships. The Pangburn Group has extensive experience in working with physicians and healthcare systems. For over two decades, Pangburn has focused its efforts on developing best practices in non qualified benefit plan recordkeeping. In this episode, we talk with Trisha Morrison, COO of The Pangburn Group, to discuss how plan administrators can remove stress from hospitals HR departments when implementing new benefit plans for employed physicians.

In June of 2008, the midwest experienced a catastrophic flooding event after months of heavy precipitation. Columbus, Indiana was affected when Haw Creek, a tributary of Flatrock River overflowed. The flooding continued for two weeks, taking two lives and causing half a billion dollars of damage in Columbus alone. Haw Creek runs through the campus of Columbus Regional Hospital. On the night of June 7th, their patients had to be evacuated and the hospital was closed for over five months. Under the leadership of CEO Jim Bickle and CMO Tom Sonderman, the hospital chose to honor their responsibility to their community in ways that showed remarkable courage. With no revenue coming in, they continued to pay their employees and coordinated the delivery of emergency care in their community. Today, we talk with Dr. Tom Sonderman about this experience and the lasting impact it had on his community.
