Perry making has deep roots in Gloucestershire, stretching back to the 17th century when French wine imports were cut off during the Napoleonic Wars. Local farmers turned to their own fruit, and the rich soils around Hartpury proved ideal for growing Perry pears. Leider. Denn er steht nicht für Interesse, Wissensdurst oder Lernbereitschaft, sondern für die endgültige Kapitulation des Geistes vor einer vermeintlich überkomplexen Welt. Ob Boomer, Generation X, Y, Z oder Alpha: Die Degenerationsmaschine überrollt sie alle. Bis unsere Nachfahren in ein paar Jahrzehnten Huxleys schöne neue Welt als gedankenlose „Epsilons“ bevölkern.Als ich 1997 mein erstes Handy kaufte, war ich begeistert. So also sieht Fortschritt aus, dachte ich damals — mit einem Rest adoleszent-positiver Naivität einer Zukunft harrend, in der man mit dem Düsenschlitten durch futuristische Städte zu seiner gut bezahlten Berufung bei einer hippen Plattenfirma flitzt. Der schwarze und schwere Brocken der Marke Motorola war zwar alles andere als handlich, kommunizierte nur wirklich störungsfrei, wenn die umständlich lange Ausziehantenne ausgefahren war, und benötigte drei AA-Batterien, um sein schwach beleuchtetes Zweizeilendisplay in Gang zu setzen — aber man konnte telefonieren. Immer und überall. Und in meine Baggy-Pants passte das Ding problemlos.Für mich, der ich gerade erst das wärmende, in der Pubertät aber natürlich enervierende und im Sommer mit der Hitze einer auskühlenden Sauna aufwartende Nest der elterlichen Dachgeschosswohnung verlassen hatte, ein wahrer Segen. Endlich konnte ich der erst kürzlich privatisierten Telekom den zunächst tatsächlich alternativlosen Festnetzanschluss kündigen und hatte ein Funkgerät in der Tasche anstelle einer Autobatterie im Zimmer. Ein Kommunikator, mit dem man anstatt nur die Kumpel, die ebenfalls, wie ich, CB-Funk oder Walkie-Talkies nutzten, jeden erreichen konnte. Theoretisch. Denn am gekippten Fenster meiner winzigen, dafür aber umso feuchteren Kellerwohnung einen Balken Empfang zu erhaschen, war im frühen E-Netz Glücksache. Aber es war ein Anfang. Ich sah das Gerät als Werkzeug. Als etwas, das mir territoriale Autonomie verlieh. So wie mein alter Fiat Uno.Die Zukunft hatte begonnen. Die Welt stand mir offen. Und gut eineinhalb Dekaden nach der Anschaffung des Motorola-Knochens erfand sogar jemand den Düsenschlitten. Oder zumindest etwas, das so ähnlich aussah. Name: Aero-X. In El Salvador wurde das Musterbeispiel einer privatisierten Gefängnisindustrie geschaffen, die einen großen Teil der Bürger inhaftiert hält — andere Länder könnten nachziehen. „Wer die Zukunft der USA sehen will, kann einen Blick auf die Geschichte El Salvadors werfen“, so der Journalist Roberto Lovato. Wenn das zutrifft, sieht Amerika dunklen Zeiten entgegen. Denn was Nayib Bukele, der „coolste Diktator der Welt“, binnen weniger Jahre in El Salvador geschaffen hat, ist der postdemokratische Prototyp eines neuen Herrschaftssystems. Der karge Raum, in dem sie auf den Tod oder die Freiheit warten, verfügt über je zwei Waschbecken und Toiletten, auf denen sie ihre Notdurft vor den Augen der anderen verrichten. Wobei sich der Biorhythmus der Insassen ohnehin auf ein Minimum reduziert haben dürfte — denn Nahrung ist Mangelware. Bewegung ebenso.Einmal am Tag gibt es 450 Gramm der immer gleichen Pampe aus Bohnen, Pasta und Tortillas. Gegessen wird mit den Händen. Denn Besteck gibt es auch nicht. Gleiches gilt für ordentliche Gerichtsverfahren, Freigang, Umschluss, Privatsphäre, persönliche Gegenstände oder den Kontakt zu Familie und Anwälten. Oft ist die erste Nachricht, die Angehörige erhalten, auch die letzte. Denn gefoltert und gestorben — gerne auch durch beiläufiges Erdrosseln — wird in den Supermax-Gefängnissen deutlich öfter als kommuniziert. But it's obviously important that we do start to bring in some non-natives. For example, we've got one area ... where we've had to sadly remove a number of large ash trees because of ash dieback...So there I'm hoping to planting native trees but also looking slightly out the box where we can planting, for example, we can plant a Caucasian hornbeam ...which is still going to service our woodland but it might have the added diversity of being able to be slightly more drought tolerant perhaps."In keeping with it's lightly unorthodox approach, The Newt allows visitors to pick vegetables and fruit from its kitchen garden:"The ethos of the kitchen garden is that for people to try - everything in there is completely edible and there is almost no boundaries... We want people to be immersed into our landscape, into our fruit and sort vegetable heritage."And with her design hat on, Katie is keen to extend the spirit of experimentation and innovation at The Newt:"I think there's ways that we can champion plants more, champion seasonality more, offer more to our guest experience in various ways. "I want to really showcase plants that aren't necessarily purchased from your local garden center...I've had the opportunity to work with some really great, wonderful and unusual plants from various temperate regions of the world. Militärische Konflikte globalen Ausmaßes sind stets trauriger Kulminationspunkt langjähriger Entwicklungen. The farm is on a bluff that overlooks the Salish Sea, which spans the international waters between British Columbia and Washington State. Cidermakers are not well known for reposting news stories about themselves and their product, but Tom is a master of this one simple act that keeps Oliver's in the news and endears him to media. That singular step alone is just one of many giveaways that Tom provides to the slow moving cider industry. This topic is key for makers looking to up level their online presence, but it was not the topic of conversation in this episode. Instead Ria and Tom caught up after the world shut down for the past 2 plus years at CiderCon 2023 held in Chicago. In this chat How minimal intervention is key for Oliver's Cider and Perry What is Farmhouse cider Spontaneously fermented - wild yeast Tannic cider and Perry Pears At Oliver's there is no measuring of sugar or fiddling with the cider. In fact, Tom can be heard in most interviews saying "Don't fiddle with cider." What's new for this acclaimed makers and cidery? More c0-ferments and collaborations! Bâtonnage This is a technique used by winemakers, where the lees (yeast cells) are stirred into solution. Nano proteins are the biggest benefit of Bâtonnage They release into the cider providing a perception of sweetness and body with out the sugar Need at least 9 months to a year to get the nano proteins There are short term benefits. Yeast produces less carbon dioxide and bubbles. They slow down after the first primary ferment. Fermentation may have stopped but there is still sugar left. Lees absorb off aromas, except for H2S rotting egg smell. Bâtonnage helps to maintain a reductive state. Full reduction - rotting smell is a type of reduction. Which helps protect the cider from oxidization and protect the flavor components. Thirty years ago, world leaders met at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio and appeared to commit to action to tackle two of the world's greatest environmental threats. The Earth Summit launched the UN Climate Change Convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity. Science in Action assesses their success by talking to atmospheric scientist Sir Bob Watson, a former chair of the International Panel of Climate Change, and to Tom Oliver, professor of applied ecology at the University of Reading. Arctic zoologist Kristin Laidre tells us about the identification of an unique population of polar bears in Southeast Greenland. The bears' unusual habitat and means of survival may make them more resilient to the loss of sea ice as the Arctic region continues to warm. Finally, archaeo-geneticist Maria Spyrou talks about her team's detective work which points to an area of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia as the likely source of the 14th Century Black Death pandemic. What is a quantum computer? Every year, new computers are being developed that are faster and smarter than ever before. But if you really want to take things to the next level, you have got to go quantum. CrowdScience listener Atikah in Hungary likes the sound of a quantum computer but wants to know what exactly is it, what can it do that a normal computer cannot, and how soon can he get hold of one? The digital devices in our everyday lives - from laptop computers to smartphones - are all based on 0s and 1s: so-called ‘bits'. But quantum computers are based on ‘qubits' - the quantum 0s and 1s that are altogether stranger, but also more powerful. CrowdScience presenter Alex Lathbridge picks the brains of quantum scientists to find out how these ‘qubits' allow computers to perform calculations millions of times faster than normal - and discovers how much of the theory is being used in reality. While quantum computers do exist, they are not yet big enough or stable enough to be really useful. Alex visits a working quantum computer to understand what they can do right now, and why it's so incredibly difficult to scale them up. He hears from the engineers racing to overcome the obstacles and unlock the potential of these mega-powerful systems. But once the engineering problems are solved, what then? What should we do when the first really powerful quantum computer comes online? We explore the exciting range of possible applications - from helping create new drugs, to making electric batteries much more efficient and maybe even helping farmers fertilize their crops for a fraction of the price.
