Welcome to a new series of ultra short meditations on prayer. Beginning with simple breathing exercises, they follow a series of progressively deeper meditations of states of prayer and consciousness. Each meditation can be listened to by itself, or as a series from beginning to end. In this meditation, after a short introduction, the listener is guided into focusing on breathing, calming and regulating the mind, relaxing the body, and preparing for deeper states of spiritual consciousness. CONTENTThis is a mini series covering parts of the Cold War we find interesting and will run in tandem with the Unconventional Soldier podcast. So why the title Seven Minutes to Midnight? The Doomsday Clock was a symbolic measurement that represented the likelihood of a human made global catastrophe in the form of a nuclear exchange between the global superpowers. In 1947 at the start of the Cold War it was deemed to be at 7 minutes to midnight, this naturally changed as the world lurched from one potential disaster to another. In 1953 it went to 2 minutes to midnight when tests were carried out on hydrogen bombs and 3 minutes to midnight in 1984 as the US and Soviet relations reached its lowest point. The Cold War eventually led to the collapse of the USSR but events of and from that time still dominate the global stage today. One of the biggest problems facing our culture today is the way in which we continuously subdivide ourselves into smaller and smaller tribes. People find themselves unable to "get along" with anyone who does not think exactly like they do. The church can often suffer from the same form of divisiveness. This is unfortunate because the true strength of the local church is found in its unity. A diverse group of people — all dwelling together in unity around the Gospel — can bring glory to God. Over the next few weeks we'll discuss how we are to remain unified within various convictions about cultural issues. The Apostle Paul was clear in his teachings to the early church and we can learn much from his principles and practices. Grab a friend and head over to Northside on Sunday morning for the launch of Pastor Stan's new Gray Matters series! We can't wait to see you!

Welcome to this new season of The Literary Life podcast! During the month of January 2024, we will be re-airing our series of episodes on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. This week we bring you an introduction both to William Shakespeare and his play A Midsummer Night's Dream. Hosts Angelina, Cindy and Thomas seek to give new Shakespeare readers a place from which to jump into his work and more experienced readers eyes to see more layers in his stories. Cindy begins with some perspective on how to start cultivating a love for Shakespeare. Angelina shares her “hot take” on whether you should read the play or watch the play. They suggest some books for further digging into Shakespeare's works, and Angelina gives an overview of the format of his comedies. Thomas goes into some detail about Roman comedy. Next week we will be back with a discussion of Acts I and II of the play. Even though the spring 2022 Literary Life Conference “The Battle Over Children's Literature” featuring special guest speaker Vigen Guroian is over, you can still purchase the recordings at HouseofHumaneLetters.com. To sign up for Thomas Banks and Anne Phillips' webinar on Herodotus on January 30, 2024, head over to HouseofHumaneLetters.com/webinars. Commonplace Quotes: If certain tendencies within our civilization were to proceed unchecked, they would rapidly take us towards a society which, like that of a prison, would be both completely introverted and completely without privacy. The last stand of privacy has always been, traditionally, the inner mind….It is quite possible, however, for communications media, especially the newer electronic ones, to break down the associative structures of the inner mind and replace them by the prefabricated structures of the media . A society entirely controlled by their slogans and exhortations would be introverted because nobody would be saying anything: there would only be echo, and Echo was the mistress of Narcissus….the triumph of communication is the death of communication: where communication forms a total environment, there is nothing to be communicated.
