Welcome to the Nerd About Life podcast, hosted by Bax.
In this penultimate episode, Noloyiso Lange joins me to discuss friendship: starting them, maintaining them and how sometimes they reach an unfortunate end. Noloyiso is a teacher by profession and jogger by morning. She also documents her life experiences through her blog: https://1noloyiso.wordpress.com
My good friend Shanturi recently shared a PSA on IGTV that moved me so much I wanted to share her message on this platform too. In the video addressed to Brown and White people she breaks down how to be an ally and attaches the post caption, “There’s so much more that needs to be talked about however this is me addressing our immediate reality and what we can startling to be legitimate allies.”
In her 2019 memoir ‘I Keep Learning’, Unathi shared the trials and triumphs of her personal and professional journey. Kolosa Qali and I had so much to unpack about this intimate in to the legendary broadcaster, singer-songwriter, Idols SA judge, TV producer and now author’s life that I’ve divided this discussion into 2 episodes. This is Part 2. The Launch of I Keep Learning, Unathi Nkayi's Memoir co-authored by Kabomo: https://youtu.be/UTUNVWq31O8

In this episode of Nerd About Life, my guest is culture writer and stylish gent Azola Kwezi. Together, we dance between Beyoncé’s Black Is King film and Zoë Modiga’s INGANEKWANE sophomore album. Both projects are the backdrop for this conversation about the gifts of this challenging year; the art we have been enjoying as audiences in the face of a pandemic; they also speak loudly to the Universal message of returning to Self and in this episode we unpack these themes to paint a final picture of how impactful Black art is in 2020. Azola has also shared his commentary about the Universal themes of Black Is King in this thought through piece title 'And Do You Belong? You Do.' here: https://medium.com/@azolakwezi/and-do-you-belong-you-do-52cb7f2e5711 You can also check out this interview with Zoë Modiga on Black Storytelling and Releasing INGANEKWANE here: https://www.lelowhatsgood.online/blog/zo-modiga-on-black-storytelling-and-releasing-eminganekwaneem One more read for you, this article about Ibra Ake on the Importance of Showcasing African Excellence in Beyoncé's 'Black Is King' here: https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2020/08/ibra-ake-beyonce-black-is-king-atlanta-season-three-interview
Zilungile Zimela joins me to unpack the Netflix documentary 'Disclosure'. There are some spoilers so you may want to watch the doccie first then come back for this reaction. Our commentary is very much centred on understanding queer politics from an African perspective. ‘Disclosure’ features leading trans creatives and thinkers who share lived experiences, perspectives and analyses about Hollywood's impact on the trans community. I asked photographer Neville Dikgomo to join me to discuss collaboration - or lack thereof - within the arts and entertainment space and in our peer group. From playing with his cell phone camera as a kid in Cape Town to Creative Directing photography projects in professional studios around Johannesburg & Pretoria, he is one of the most sought-after portrait photographers I know. This topic of collaboration is particularly important to me because - as cheesy as it sounds - I believe that teamwork makes the dream work. With so many young, gifted and black potential collaborators roaming the earth, we have an opportunity to make some unifying, impactful and inspiring work in a new kind of way: merging industries, inventing new ideas, changing the world as we have seen and known it. The likes of Issa Rae with her production company, Beyoncé with her Black Is King film and Netflix’s original shows have shown us that if people care enough, it’s absolutely possible to collaborate successfully and in a way that is inclusive and impactful. It’s just you and me for this first episode of the new season for my Nerd About Life podcast. Well, you me and the hadedas that make an appearance earlier on in this episode. A lot of what has been rising up to the surface for me in this new season of my life is a familiarity; I’m not a new person but I’ve just become more of myself. In this episode, I make sense of my growth professionally and highlight the significant lessons learned along the way. Landing at the truth of Philippians 4:13, I share my realisation that my purpose is in fulfilling the highest expression of myself by doing all things. All things! It’s been a long time, we never shoulda left you without something dope to listen too… We had such a multi-layered, cross-pollinated, in-depth, insight full conversation that we had to cut this one into 3 episodes: we dive into woke culture in general in the first episode, in the second one we look at the side effects of being a woke creative and in this part 3, we apply – or at least try to – apply woke logic to the hashtag #ZodwaCancelled… If you haven’t yet, make sure you also leave a rating on any episode you listen to.
