A deep dive conversation based on the moviescramble.co.uk review written by Mary Munoz. Barbie the Doll lives in bliss in the matriarchal society of Barbieland feeling good about her role in the world in the various iterations of Barbies over the years showing girls that play with her that they can be whatever and whoever they want. On the flip side, Ken, who also lives in Barbieland, is unnoticed except in relation to Barbie, which is however, one step above any other doll in Barbieland, such as Allan. One day, Stereotypical Barbie begins to have feelings that she's never experienced, which leads to her world seemingly falling apart. Weird Barbie determines that there is something happening in the real world with someone playing with her being unhappy, leading to Stereotypical Barbie reluctantly heading to the real world to rectify what is happening with that person, she first needing to find this person. Much to Barbie's chagrin, the original Ken, Beach Ken, tags along with her to the real world in he needing to survive in her presence. Beyond their mission to find this person, Barbie and Ken will find the real world unlike anything they know in Barbieland, especially in it being a male-dominated society. While Barbie still has to find out what's going on that made her come to the real world, Ken is finding a newfound control, which he wants to bring back to Barbieland. If he can do so, the role of Barbie in the real world may be forever changed. On top of everything, executives at Mattel, primarily white men, discover that a "real life" Barbie and Ken doll have infiltrated the real world, their mission to capture the pair, but especially Barbie, to put them/her back in their/her place, namely in a manufacturer's sealed box. Barbie is a 2023 fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. Based on the fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous animated films and specials. Starring Margot Robbie as the title character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film follows them on a journey of self-discovery through Barbieland and the real world following an existential crisis. The supporting cast includes America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. We recorded this episode from Big Sky, Montana at the annual Spotter Creator Summit - four days with some of the top creators in the world talking about where this industry is actually headed. And one idea kept coming up over and over again: We've officially entered the era of abundance. There is more good content, more creators, and more competition for attention than ever before. Streamers are courting creators. AI is accelerating production. And brands have more options than they know what to do with. So the real question going into 2026 isn't “How do I grow?” It's: How do I become memorable? In this episode, we break down what we're hearing directly from creators, platforms, and brands—including insights from Issa Rae, conversations happening inside the summit, and Adam Mosseri's New Year's post about authenticity and AI. We talk about: Why “just making good videos” isn't enough anymore How creators need to start telling the story of the story What's changing in brand deals (and why short-form and long-form are diverging) Why streamers are suddenly paying closer attention to creators How AI changes the meaning of authenticity And what it takes to make something that can't be summarized This episode is about the next phase of the creator economy—and the shift from chasing views to building something people actually remember. In today's episode, we dive into the state of our attention spans are we too tar gone, or is there hope to reset? We unpack what's really draining our focus: endless scrolling, microwave content, and even record labels pushing artists toward 2-minute songs just to game the algorithms. Has music lost its patience-and its soul? From there, we tap into the cultural pulse: New Music Drops from Summer Walker, Wale, Meek Mill, and more-who delivered, who disappointed, and which ones might actually last longer than our attention spans. Max B's Double Show Sell-Out-years later, what could his new sound be? Has the game changed too much, or will he change the game-again? We get into the messiness of pop culture: Rory the Racist? Breaking down the controversy, what was said-and why it hit a nerve. The Pusha T Instagram caption—is it just rap talk, or is he stirring up something deeper? Then we zoom out to society and policy: * The government conveniently reopens right before the holidays—what does that even mean for real people? * SNAP recipients are being forced to reapply-we explore the frustration, the timing, and how it impacts millions. Hollywood and personal narratives: * Issa Rae says she doesn't feel successful-what does success really look like in the age of constant comparison? * Eddie Murphy documentary—a look at legacy, comeback energy, and how comedy shaped culture. We wrap with sports and style: NFL Midseason Breakdown-who's shocking, who's slumping, and early MVP whispers. * NBA Stars and Sneaker Culture 2.0 can athlete-designed sneakers really make their way back into fashion? And who's leading the movement? * 7PM in Brooklyn: Ja Rule vs. 50 Cent Beef—revisited. Legacy, impact, and who really won the war.
On this episode of the MalloryBros. Podcast, the guys kick things off with a weekend recap. Terrance hosted at the new crib and Terrell spent some needed time with the family. They jump into some football talk and reflect on a few games, which leads to a deeper conversation about Shedeur Sanders' debut. Terrance, who has been critical of Shedeur, finally gives some real perspective on the reaction to his play. They move over to one of the biggest film stories of the week. Sydney Sweeney's “Christy” completely flopped at the box office after the backlash from her Levi campaign and the interview she did after. The guys break down the producer point of view and how an actor's personal life can singlehandedly derail the success of an entire film. Next, they get into Issa Rae's recent comments about not feeling successful. The Bros give more Film POV and talk about why her return to the big screen matters and what her impact means going forward. They follow that with another round of Movie Trivia, this time focused on 90s, 00s, and 2010s Black films. They trade questions, share laughs, and get competitive as always. The last hour is special. The chapter called “Fondest Memories” is an interactive storytelling exercise where the guys share real memories and get into that personal bag the fans love. The final 30 minutes turn into a reflective conversation when Terrell asks Terrance what he would tell his confused 23-year-old self. His answer turns into a powerful dialogue about the Bros' journey, lessons learned, and advice they'd give to their younger selves. If anybody is in that life limbo or needs some perspective, this episode should hit home.

Today, we’re throwing it back to Session 321 — Some Thoughts On Playing Small. This quick episode was inspired by a line from Issa Dee, the beloved character played by Issa Rae in Insecure: “How much different would your life be if you actually went after what you wanted?” It’s a question that feels especially relevant now as we head into summer. So, what would it look like to stop shrinking and give yourself permission to take up more space, both at work and in your daily life, as well as in your relationships and dreams? I hope this episode encourages you to reflect on where you might be playing small and how you can start showing up more fully for yourself. This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out to talk about the 2025 Black Mirror episode: Hotel Reverie, for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Hotel Reverie stars Issa Rae, Emma Corrin, and Awkwafina in a bittersweet sapphic story that centers around a sci-fi style high-tech simulation of an old 1940's classic film, “Hotel Reverie”. The premise is that Hollywood A-lister Brandy Friday (Issa Rae) will be playing the lead role of Dr. Alex Palmer (in spite of the original actor being a white man) in the remake; and to do so, she will be sent inside a fully immersive simulation of the film complete with “people” who think they are real, but are they? Of course as soon as Brandy enters the simulation, she begins to fall for Clara, Dr. Palmer's love interest in the original. Initially, Clara sticks to the script, but as the movie progresses, she begins to completely break the plot with her uncontainable gayness. The explanation is that the actor who played Clara, Dorothy Chambers, put so much of herself into the performance that “echoes” of Dorothy exist now in the simulated version of Clara. With the influence of Dorothy's memories and a growing attraction to Brandy, Clara begins to be more and more openly gay and that is actually bad for Brandy– if she doesn't manage to stick the landing and say the final line of the movie, she could be trapped forever in Hotel Reverie. Plus there's that sticky little feature that if Brandy were to be killed in the simulation, she would die in real life. But for all the danger, Brandy cares about only one thing, Clara, their love, and the little simulated life they build while the movie is “frozen”. We talk about the unavoidable comparisons to San Junipero, the many, many glaring plot holes throughout the episode, and the implications of Black Mirror consistently burying their gays and also only allowing gay characters to exist in simulations, video games, computers, etc. Additionally, we discuss the unsatisfying ending and why it didn't feel as resolved or happy as it did for our lesbians in San Junipero. At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on Hotel Reverie, titled “A Time You Don't Remember”, written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida. For six decades they've been each others' most trusted counsel—and now, they want to be that counsel for you. In this episode, they're joined by actress Issa Rae for a conversation about navigating the challenges of mismatched expectations in adult friendships. Issa Rae is an acclaimed actor, producer, writer, and restauranteur—but she's also a student of modern adult friendships. She joins Michelle and Craig to answer a question from a listener who is struggling with the unexpected end of a long-term friendship. Issa asks why male friendships are so weird and shares lessons from a friendship falling out. Michelle offers lessons on how to maintain connections throughout life, and Craig takes a stand for the fellas – who, Issa and Michelle claim, have no idea how to use emojis to express actual emotion.
