Expanding on her book, Lean Out, The Truth About Women, Power, and the Workplace, Author and leadership speaker, Marissa Orr, offers insightful and humorous discussions about life in the corporate world. Not your usual business talk, NGDWTB covers issues like power and gender equality from an unconventional, no BS perspective. Serious topics without taking ourselves too seriously, NGDWTB is like dishing about office politics with your work-wife over a glass of wine.
Today's quick hit (15 min) episode covers two things: 1. why I don't believe serving others is the key to finding purpose and meaning 2. a new personality framework for confidence and growth.
On episode 10 of NGDWTB, we hear from Bala Sankaran, former Twitter VP and current CEO of Alpha Ori Technologies. Shortly after trying his hand at running ten years ago (which is a hilarious story in and of itself), Bala became a certified coach through Road Runners Club. The first group he coached included his 9 year old daughter and her friends, all of whom completed their first half-marathon shortly afterward. Several years later, his community of runners has grown to over 150 people, most of whom are kids and their parents, and together they have finished 100+ races. In this episode, Bala tells us how he’s been able to inspire and motivate so many kids to achieve goals they never thought possible.
On Episode 9 of NGDWTB, we talk to Dr. Melissa Merrick, President and CEO of Prevent Child Abuse America, a nonprofit whose mission is to prevent the abuse and neglect of our nation’s children. We not only learn how she manages to juggle the huge responsibilities of work and home life, we also go deep into the Covid-19 pandemic and how it's affecting women and children from working class families.
Washing machines, electric ovens, and the birth control pill. These modern inventions liberated women from repetitive, time-intensive tasks that dominated their daily life in the early 20th century, ultimately paving the way for them to enter the workforce en masse. But without any new domestic-related innovations or technology since the pill came out in 1960, women are spending just as much time today on domestic chores as they were 60 years ago. In episode 8, I talk about the tyranny of childcare and offer a new perspective on how to solve it.
Defining career success is simple: what do you want, what is the price you have to pay to get it, and are you willing to pay the price? Simple, yes. Easy, nope! Just the first part, knowing what you want, can be the journey of a lifetime. In episode 7 of NGDWTB, I share stories from my life and career and what they taught me about defining success on my own terms.
In episode 6, I share my perspective on discipline and how it's a prerequisite to finding meaning and purpose in your career. To help bring this topic to life, I talk to Will Eagle, seasoned brand and marketing professional, as well as author of "YouTube Marketing for Dummies" and "Read This if You Want to be YouTube Famous." Don't let the bad audio quality fool you (sorrrrry), episode 5 of NGDWTB is [insert 3 fire emojis]. Today's episode is all about fear and how it influences our decisions about life and career. To bring the topic to life, I talk to friend and former Google colleague, Erika Gerdes. In 2019, after 12 successful years at the company, Erika left Google to start her own business as a writer, speaker, and coach (erikagerdes.com). She shares the highs and lows of her journey and the wisdom she's gained along the way.
Episode 4 is dedicated to the secret epidemic of girl-on-girl crime in the workplace. The public discourse on bullying mostly centers on male-dominant types of aggression such as sexual harassment. But abuse isn't about gender, it's about power. So on this episode of NGDWTB, I discuss what it's like to be the target of a female bully in the workplace, why it looks different from other forms of aggression, and what to do if you're a target.
On episode 3 of NGDWTB, I have my very first guest on the show, a Googler and former teammate, David Sandler. We go deep into the topic of creativity, the pain of performance reviews, and the difference between campaigning and governing in the workplace.
This episode of NGDWTB is dedicated to answering reader questions. Amongst other things, I share the story behind the title 'Lean Out,' what compelled me to go against Lean In, and what life is like after leaving the corporate world and starting my own business (spoiler: love fewer meetings, miss steady paycheck).
The inaugural episode of NGDWTB shares the story behind the title, my journey to write Lean Out, and a few stories that explain the premise of the book.
