Charley breaks down how power actually moves through technology, why many leaders still misread the systems they operate within, and how imagination—not just strategy—shapes better futures. He shares the blind spots he sees most often in tech and policy, the role community plays in sustaining meaningful change, and how AI fits into the broader landscape of systems transformation. Charley closes with an honest reflection on success—what he's letting go of, what he's moving toward, and why metrics alone will never tell the full story.Learn more about Charley's upcoming workshops: 1) Mapping Your System: How to Navigate Power, People & Change in Uncertain Times and 2) Beyond the Principles: How to Make Responsible AI Real, A 3-Part Intensive for Tech & Society Leaders.Takeaways* Independent work can be both disorienting and deeply energizing.* Power in tech often operates invisibly, yet shapes outcomes everywhere.* Building community is essential for meaningful, sustainable change.* Many leaders misinterpret data as neutral rather than value-laden.* Technology must be aligned with a clear, intentional vision of the future.* Cynicism limits possibility; curiosity expands it.* AI is a tool—not an answer to systemic problems.* True success is grounded in fulfillment and relationships, not just scale.* Understanding systems is essential to influencing them.* Imagination is a critical—yet underrated—skill in tech and policy.Chapters* 00:00 Mapping Power and Technology* 22:45 The Journey of Independence* 27:39 Navigating Content Creation* 33:02 Defining Success and AI Perspectives* 38:30 Building Businesses with Purpose* 39:00 Looking Ahead: Technology and Future PlanningAnchor Change with Katie Harbath is a reader-supported publication. In this episode of Between Product and Partnerships, Cristina Flaschen speaks with Mike Gelber, Chief Product Officer at Impiricus, about his career path and the experiences that shaped his approach to product leadership in healthcare. Mike's background spans finance, ad tech, and healthcare, and his move into product reflects a steady pull toward roles that combine technical depth with proximity to real users. Throughout the conversation, he shares how those experiences influenced the way he approaches product decisions, partnerships, and growth in a regulated environment. From Finance to Product ThinkingMike began his career at JP Morgan, where he quickly gravitated toward building tools that made work more efficient. Teaching himself to automate tasks introduced him to software development and revealed the leverage technology could provide. That curiosity led him into ad tech, where working closely with customers helped him connect system design with real usage. Over time, product became the natural intersection between building technology and understanding how people actually work. Why Founding a Company Accelerated His GrowthStarting a company brought Mike closer to customers and everyday decision-making. Choices carried immediate consequences, which sharpened his sense of focus and sequencing. The experience also exposed him to areas of the business that are often distant from product roles, shaping a broader understanding of how products are built, sold, and sustained over time.Lessons from Building and Exiting LassoMike reflects on building Lasso and guiding it through growth before its acquisition by IQVIA. A defining lesson from that journey was the importance of validating demand early. Proving value through direct execution helped guide product direction and informed how he now thinks about product-market fit. That experience reinforced the importance of grounding decisions in real usage rather than assumptions.Joining ImpiricusAfter the acquisition, Mike joined Impiricus as Chief Product Officer. He initially questioned whether SMS could be an effective channel in healthcare. Spending time with the product in real-world settings changed that perspective, particularly as he observed how clinicians interacted with it during day-to-day work. Those experiences helped clarify the product's role in supporting healthcare providers.Defining Success in Healthcare ProductMike describes success at Impiricus through outcomes and experience. Pharmaceutical partners measure impact through prescribing behavior, while healthcare providers encounter fewer barriers when supporting patients. The most meaningful signals come from moments where the product quietly fits into existing workflows and reduces friction without drawing attention to itself.Timing, Integration, and RelevanceThe conversation returns often to timing. Mike explains how Impiricus uses data and integrations to engage healthcare providers when support is most relevant. This approach allows the product to fit naturally into clinical workflows, which is critical in environments where attention is limited.Looking AheadMike shares what's next for Impiricus, including the launch of a new product called Ascend and continued momentum following recognition on Deloitte's Fast 500 list. As the company grows, the focus remains on staying close to healthcare providers and maintaining the product principles that shaped its early success. Cristina closes the episode by reflecting on how Mike's journey illustrates how product leadership evolves inside regulated industries.

Are you using “attachment parenting” — or accidentally doing permissive parenting? In this eye-opening conversation, Greg & Rachel Denning break down what true attachment parenting is (and isn't). They share the skills, mindsets, and tools that helped them eliminate tantrums for 16 years and prevent teen rebellion—without yelling, shaming, or rigid control. You'll learn why parenting is a specific, learnable skill, how to build secure attachment from baby to teen, and where popular advice (cry-it-out, forced “holding time,” over-scheduling, letting kids lead everything) quietly damages trust. You'll also get a clear blueprint for connection with boundaries so kids feel safe, seen, and guided—and you feel calm, confident, and effective.Bottom line: Attachment is earned, not forced. Respect your child's free will, meet real needs (sleep, food, attention), co-regulate big emotions, and set firm, sensible boundaries. That's the evergreen approach that works in every generation.Key Takeaways✅ Parenting is a skill—unrelated to how good you are at business, sports, or leadership.✅ Attachment ≠ permissive. It's connection + boundaries and kind + firm.✅ Attachment is earned, not forced. No cry-it-out or “holding until defeat.”✅ Respect free will while providing age-appropriate structure and safety.✅ Co-regulation first (your calm is contagious), then teach self-regulation.✅ Meet basics (sleep, nutrition, attention) before behavior battles.✅ Measure success by long-term trust and adult outcomes—not short-term compliance.Chapters:00:00 Introduction to Attachment Parenting00:43 Clarifying Misunderstandings in Parenting02:04 The Importance of Parenting Skills03:09 Defining Success in Parenting04:39 Understanding Attachment Parenting05:23 The Dangers of Misapplied Parenting Techniques06:56 The Impact of Adoption on Attachment08:25 The Consequences of Control in Parenting11:28 The Role of Freedom in Child Development13:48 The Misconception of Holding Time16:10 The Impact of Sleep Training on Children17:59 Respecting Free Will in Parenting20:39 The Concept of Holding Time24:22 Understanding Boundaries and Safety28:24 Preparing Children for Adulthood31:24 The Lifelong Mentor-Mentee Relationship33:01 Building a Legacy of Good ParentingMemorable Quotes

In this episode, I sit down with one of my dearest friends, Alyshia Ochse—an actress, writer, and host of That One Audition—for a deeply honest conversation about creativity, evolution, and what it means to live fully expressed. Alyshia and I go way back, and this conversation feels like sitting down with a sister to unpack the beautiful, messy process of growth. We talk about the “itchy” seasons that come before transformation, how success evolves with age and awareness, and the power of embracing stillness instead of forcing clarity. Alyshia shares how she's learning to define success on her own terms, welcome the valleys with grace, and release patterns of people-pleasing to make room for deeper, more authentic relationships. Together, we explore what it means to lead with self-trust, accept change, and allow yourself to be fully seen—both in life and art. And, and when you kind of catch yourself trying to sand the edges of your decision making process, your soul, what you're okay with, what you're not okay with, to kind of fit something that no longer fits, then how do you give yourself the permission to accept that? Because a lot of people want to avoid that because it is grief. It is loss. It is you coming to terms and being honest with the fact that, oh, maybe I'm not supposed to be in a relationship with this person anymore. Maybe I'm not supposed to be friends with this person anymore. Maybe I'm not supposed to work with this person anymore.” - Julie Solomon “ There's a deepening to my relationships, not only with my work, but with people, places and things, is just really learning how to show more of myself. We are absolutely thrilled to welcome the incredible Iain Morrison today! Iain has spent years working behind the scenes to help global superstars bring their spectacular shows to Australian audiences. Several years ago, he launched his company, The Imagination Collaborative. He joins us today to share his journey and insights from his remarkable career in the events industry. Iain's Journey Iain built his career behind the scenes of the world's biggest concerts, working with global stars like Pink, the Foo Fighters, U2, Taylor Swift, and Adele. After decades of running large-scale productions and managing hundreds of people, he founded The Imagination Collaborative, a company that uses advanced digital technology to plan and visualize major events. His shift from being constantly on the road to leading a remote, tech-driven business reflects both the evolution of the events industry and his own desire for a balanced, meaningful lifestyle. Precision and Planning with Digital Technology Iain's company uses 3D modeling and digital twins to map out event infrastructure with extreme accuracy, reducing costs, saving labor, and improving efficiency, especially for large outdoor venues where terrains vary. Shifting from Onsite Chaos to Remote Work After years of managing massive productions, Iain now relies on digital connectivity, operating primarily from his home. While he appreciates the quiet and flexibility, he sometimes misses the high-energy, in-person collaboration of event sites. To stay connected, he plans to visit more live events this year and reconnect with the colleagues who have been part of his professional life for decades. Balancing Work and Lifestyle Iain designed his business around the life he chose to live, not the other way around. He and his wife have embraced remote work, even traveling across Australia in their caravan while managing operations. For them, success means sustainability, freedom, and presence rather than building the biggest company possible. Life Lessons and Priorities The sudden passing of a colleague prompted Iain to reassess his priorities. He realized that waiting to enjoy life after years of overwork is a dangerous gamble. He now focuses on being fully present, spending time with family —especially his new grandchild —and creating a business that supports a fulfilling life rather than consuming it. Defining Success on His Own Terms The Imagination Collaborative is thriving financially and creatively, but Iain measures his success by its alignment with his values. His goal for the next decade is to collaborate with people who are passionate about technology and purpose-driven event creation. For him, growth is secondary to quality of life, enjoyment, and meaningful relationships. Lessons from a Year of Growth Iain admits that the first year of running his company was exhausting due to global clients and time zone challenges. Yet it taught him valuable lessons about boundaries, clarity, and vision. He and his wife now focus on refining their goals and using what they have learned to make their second year more balanced and efficient. Technology and a Changing Industry Iain credits modern connectivity, particularly innovations like Starlink, for making his lifestyle possible. With advanced processing power, cloud rendering, and real-time visualization tools, remote collaboration has become seamless. Iain believes his generation has been fortunate to witness and adapt to technological revolutions that continually open new opportunities. The Future of The Imagination Collaborative Looking ahead, Iain intends to continue working with top venues and event teams worldwide, helping them visualize and deliver world-class experiences. His priority is helping the right people create the right events while maintaining integrity and staying true to his values of balance and authenticity. Bio: Iain Morrison Iain Morrison is the straight-talking CEO of The Imagination Collaborative and one of the most trusted voices in the global event industry. With over 35 years of experience leading large-scale productions, Iain is known for his humor, honesty, and no-nonsense insights on creativity, leadership, and burnout. Ranked in the Top 1% of LinkedIn creators worldwide, his posts reach thousands who appreciate his blend of real talk, empathy, and practical wisdom. Iain's influence spans brands like Adobe, Canva, and Zoom, making him a leading advocate for authentic, human-centered innovation in event management. Nearly a year and a half after our conversation first aired, Aaron Slodov and Atomic Industries have reached an important milestone worth celebrating. Atomic recently announced the close of its $25 million Series A, led by MaC Venture Capital and DTX Ventures, with participation from Narya and others, to accelerate the rollout of its AI-driven manufacturing platform. With this funding, Atomic is expanding its software-defined factory footprint and advancing the AI systems at the heart of its vision—one that has already moved from pilot to production, shipping parts to some of the world's most demanding OEMs. At its core, Atomic is working to strengthen America's industrial base by making the manufacturing of physical goods more localized, resilient, and technology-enabled.This felt like the perfect moment to revisit my conversation with Aaron, where we unpack his techno-industrialist philosophy, the deep history of Ohio manufacturing, and why the future of physical production matters so much for our country. So, with that timely update, please enjoy this timeless conversation from the Lay of The Land archives with Aaron Slodov, CEO of Atomic Industries.00:00:00 – The Rise of Techno-Industrialism00:05:56 – The Journey from Bits to Atoms00:10:41 – The Challenges of Manufacturing00:15:47 – Reindustrialization and the Post-Industrial Myth00:20:48 – Atomic Industries: Innovating Manufacturing00:25:42 – Exascaling the Industrial Base00:30:49 – The Future of Manufacturing Talent00:40:46 – The Shift in Manufacturing Careers00:42:50 – Incentivizing the Return to Manufacturing00:44:58 – Cultural Integration of Tech and Manufacturing00:50:38 – Defining Success in Modern Manufacturing00:52:03 – The Importance of a Techno-Industrial Framework00:56:12 – Policy and the Future of Manufacturing01:02:33 – The Potential of Reindustrialization01:05:57 – Storytelling as a Tool for Founders-----LINKS:https://www.linkedin.com/in/abslodov/https://twitter.com/aphysicisthttps://www.atomic.industries/https://www.piratewires.com/p/techno-industrialist-manifestohttps://twitter.com/newindustrials-----SPONSOR:Roundstone InsuranceRoundstone Insurance is proud to sponsor Lay of The Land. Jeff Berlin is the Founder and President of Bridge Industries & Chairman and CEO of TransTech Energy. Jeff's journey spans from his early days at Parker Hannifin to helping grow Hawk Corporation from a $20 million single-plant business into a $200 million global operation, and ultimately to founding his own company, Bridge — an industrial holding company anchored by TransTech — that has quietly scaled into a multi-hundred-million-dollar enterprise based in Chagrin Falls. In our conversation, we cover Jeff's conviction in the importance of American manufacturing and how it shaped his career-long commitment to building enduring businesses; the creation of Bridge Industries and his intentional choice of a permanent holding-company model over traditional private equity; the more than 25-fold scaling of TransTech into a diversified industrial platform with over 700 employees, up from just 35 a decade earlier; and the lessons learned along the way — the resilience and philosophy that guide him, how to weather downturns, usefulness as a true measure of value and success, culture across companies, and much more.00:00:00 - The Roots of American Manufacturing Belief 00:07:35 - Formative Experiences in Leadership 00:09:00 - Transformational Growth at Hawk 00:11:55 - Resilience in Business 00:13:10 - The Birth of Bridge 00:14:14 - Understanding Industrial Holding Companies 00:16:25 - Differentiation from Traditional Private Equity 00:19:00 - The Journey of Bridge 00:20:47 - Strategic Growth and Acquisitions 00:27:31 - Managing Geographic Expansion 00:30:01 - Introducing TransTech 00:31:28 - Building Infrastructure for Energy Solutions 00:35:59 - Strategic Growth and Acquisition Insights 00:38:10 - The Importance of Vertical Integration 00:42:51 - Cultural Dynamics in Business Integration 00:43:43 - The State of American Manufacturing 00:46:30 - Defining Success and Value Creation 00:48:10 - Future Ambitions for Bridge and TransTech 00:49:40 - Mentorship and Leadership Evolution 00:51:22 - Understanding the Nature of Industrial Work 00:54:40 - The Role of Infrastructure in Daily Life 00:55:56 - Excitement for Future Challenges 00:58:07 - Investing in Financial and IT Infrastructure 00:59:52 - Automation and Its Implications 01:01:53 - Guiding Wisdom and Philosophy 01:02:51 - Renewable Natural Gas and Environmental Impact 01:05:51 - Hidden Gem-----LINKS:https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeff-berlin-9b156a12/https://bridgeind.com/-----SPONSOR:Roundstone InsuranceRoundstone Insurance is proud to sponsor Lay of The Land.
