In response, autmobile companies, car dealers, driving enthuisasts, and others went on the offense, creating the culture that gave rise to the mass adoption of cars and the phenomenon of forced car dependence. Timothy David Snyder is an American historian specializing in the history of Central and Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, and the Holocaust. He is on leave from his position as the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University with plans (as of 1 July 2025 to transfer to the University of Toronto for an indefinite time.He is a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. Snyder serves on the Committee on Conscience of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. When – and how – did Athenian democracy begin? There is no unambiguous answer to this question. This lecture explores one plausible origin: the popular uprising in 508 BCE overthrowing foreign invaders (who had previously expelled an Athenian-bred family of tyrants). In the aftermath of that revolution, the Athenians – led by Kleisthenes – reorganised their political system to foster new identities and interactions. As further political and social changes were made, Athenian democracy took shape in the imaginations of contemporaries and of later generations.This lecture was recorded by Professor Melissa lane on the 16th of October 2025 at Barnards Inn Hall, London.Melissa Lane is the Class of 1943 Professor of Politics, Princeton University and is also Associated Faculty in the Department of Classics and Department of Philosophy. What will it take to wake more of the world up to the dangers of mass automobility — and could a book be help Americans imagine a future beyond car dominance?  That's what Sarah Goodyear and her co-authors are hoping as they release their new book "Life After Cars: Freeing Ourselves From the Tyranny of the Automobile." Along with Doug Gordon and Aaron Naperstek, with whom she co-founded the legendary "War on Cars" podcast, she's bringing the conversation about transportation reform to a new audience, and hoping to give even veteran advocates new tools to talk about why we need to radically rethink our streets.  We sat down with Goodyear at the Vision Zero Cities conference in New York City last week to  dig deep into the research about how, in her words, "cars ruin" so much of our world, why we can't dismantle other forms of violence without confronting our violent transportation system, and the one politician she most wants to pick up this book.

Prime Minister Starmer claims it will bring the UK into a "modern age." Tyranny comes under the guise of convenience. With this new technocratic ID rolled out, Starmer says if you have to prove who you are without your digital ID, you will be fined 85 pounds every single time. Interestingly, this sounds a lot like something they did in 2021... Using teenagers in a promotional video for the digital ID, he claims it will make life easier. This is usually what they say before they roll out surveillance. It's either about making things easier, safer or for national security purposes. All a lie. Starmer recently threatened people in one video saying, " You don't HAVE to do exactly as I say... NO, you don't HAVE to... but... life won't be easy if you don't, love." Starmer made this statement while giggling through gritted teeth. He's threatening people to bow to this program. When they say it's "voluntary," one must remember that this includes you giving up your driver's license, job, bank account, rent, passport and more if you don't comply. If that doesn't sound coercive to you, give your head a shake. They're rolling out additional digital IDs in the UK for children. This happens as Canada attempts to create internet IDs and restrict people from accessing the internet if they say something the government doesn't like. This is happening as the EU rolls out both their digital ID as well as the CBDC Digital Euro this month. Mexico is rolling out biometric CURP IDs. The United States has rolled out Real-ID, the GENIUS Act and many corporations are rolling out digital IDs and social credit systems. 86 million bank accounts were closed in Vietnam for not complying with their new biometric digital ID system.
