How Behavior-Driven Design Is Defining the Future of the Home KBIS Series 2026, findings and experiences from the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, recorded live from the KBIS Podcast Studio presented by AJ Madison. This was the second year of this program and we built on last year's show with even more experts in the industry sharing experience, findings and industry-leading insights. KBIS Podcast Studio Resources: KBIS AJ Madison NKBA LUXE Interiors + Design SubZero, Wolf & Cove SKS | Signature Kitchen Suite Hearth & Home Technologies Kitchen365 Green Forrest Cabinetry Midea What happens when home innovation prioritizes real-world habits over flashy, unnecessary features? This conversation explores how a deep understanding of how people use their appliances every day leads to intentional solutions that fit every lifestyle. Join Justin Reinke, Head of Product Marketing at Midea, and Ryan Shaffer, Sr. Technical Product Planning Engineer at Midea, to discuss how hundreds of hours of in-home observation drive breakthroughs in everything from acoustic comfort to specialized hygiene. By analyzing universal pain points—like the rise of sustainable drinkware and open-concept living—we examine the R&D required to make daily chores easier through practical, performance-driven design that works harder for the household. For decades, appliance innovation followed a predictable formula: more features, more technology, more complexity. Digital displays replaced analog controls. Connectivity introduced remote operation. Artificial intelligence promised optimization. But somewhere along the way, innovation lost sight of its most important objective—serving the human being. Today, that philosophy is changing. At KBIS 2026, one of the most important conversations wasn't about technology itself, but about behavior. Appliance manufacturers are increasingly recognizing that true innovation does not begin in engineering labs. It begins in homes—watching how people live. This shift represents a fundamental evolution in product development. Instead of asking what technology can do, manufacturers are asking what people actually need. Consider the refrigerator. It is opened dozens of times each day, often absentmindedly, during moments of distraction, urgency, or fatigue. Every movement—the height of a shelf, the accessibility of a drawer, the ease of filling a glass—shapes the user's experience. These micro-interactions define whether an appliance feels intuitive or frustrating. Similarly, dishwashers must now accommodate modern behavioral realities. Reusable bottles, travel tumblers, and complex accessories require flexibility that traditional rack designs never anticipated. Washing machines must operate quietly enough to coexist within open-plan homes, where appliance noise becomes part of the lived environment. These are not technological problems. They are human problems. The most forward-thinking manufacturers have embraced observation as their primary design tool. By studying real households, engineers and designers can identify friction points invisible in traditional research. The goal is not to add features, but to remove obstacles. This approach also challenges the industry's historical obsession with specifications. Feature lists do not guarantee usability. Connectivity does not guarantee convenience. Technology that requires explanation has already failed its most important test. The future appliance must be intuitive. It must integrate seamlessly into daily routines, supporting behavior rather than disrupting it. It must operate quietly, reliably, and predictably. It must reduce mental load, not increase it. Perhaps most importantly, it must respect the reality that appliances are not aspirational objects. They are functional infrastructure. They exist to support life, not define it. This shift toward behavior-driven design reflects a broader maturation of the appliance industry. Innovation is no longer measured by novelty, but by invisibility. The best appliances do their job so well that users never think about them at all. In the end, the future of appliances will not be defined by how advanced they are. It will be defined by how effortlessly they serve the people who depend on them every day. Behavior as the Foundation of Innovation Product development begins with observing real-world habits. Behavioral insights reveal needs consumers rarely articulate. Design solutions prioritize intuitive use over technical novelty. Practical Innovation vs Feature Saturation Most consumers use only a small percentage of available features. Simplification improves usability, adoption, and satisfaction. Innovation must solve real problems—not marketing problems. Appliances as Infrastructure for Daily Life Refrigerators open dozens of times daily, making ergonomic design critical. Dishwashers, washers, and refrigeration now integrate into behavioral routines. Appliances increasingly support lifestyle efficiency, not just task completion. Noise Reduction and Environmental Integration Open floor plans make acoustic performance essential. Quiet operation improves perceived quality and livability. Engineering focus has expanded beyond performance to experiential comfort. Replacement Market Realities and Design Flexibility Most appliance purchases are replacements, not full remodels. Products must integrate visually and functionally with mixed-brand kitchens. Flexible, accessible design supports long-term usability. Sustainability Through Longevity and Efficiency Sustainability now includes durability, waste reduction, and performance efficiency. Better storage and preservation reduce food waste. Long product lifecycles contribute to environmental responsibility.

Send a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale has a truly amazing discussion with business entrepreneur Karl Tyler. Karl had a dream from the time he was in 8th grade, he wanted to own a ranch and raise and sell the best cattle in the world. He headed to college to study animal sciences and found out he could not afford to stay in school unless he found a job. This segment is titled: The Hidden Dangers Lurking on Your Kitchen Cutting BoardIt's a busy weeknight, and you're making a quick stir-fry. You cut raw chicken on your cutting board, rinse it quickly, then chop fresh vegetables on the same surface. While this might seem efficient, it can let bacteria sneak into your meal, turning a healthy dinner into a problem. Cutting boards, whether wood or plastic, are a leading cause of foodborne illnesses at home, spreading germs through cross-contamination and buildup. The good news is that by learning about these risks and following a few simple habits, you can keep your meals safe and your family healthy.Let's look at why cutting boards pose such a threat. At their core, these tools are battlegrounds for bacteria. When you cut raw meat, poultry, or seafood, juices containing pathogens such as Salmonella or E. coli seep onto the surface of the board. These bacteria can transfer to other foods if the board isn't properly handled, leading to cross-contamination, in which harmful microbes jump from contaminated items to ready-to-eat foods like salads or bread. Picture slicing a tomato right after handling chicken; the bacteria hitch a ride, and your fresh produce becomes a vector for illness. The type of cutting board you use matters. Plastic boards are easy to clean, but over time, knife cuts create grooves where bacteria can hide from soap. Wooden boards, especially softer woods like cypress, can split and form cracks that trap germs. Hardwoods like maple are better because their tight grain can pull in fluids and help kill bacteria as the board dries. A 2018 study found that bacteria stick more to wood and plastic boards than to glass, so the material affects how long germs survive. Bamboo boards are strong but still need regular care to avoid moisture and mold. Besides bacteria, cutting boards can also collect other harmful germs like Listeria, which can stay on surfaces, and Campylobacter from raw poultry, which spreads easily. In poorly cleaned areas, boards can harbor many types of germs and quietly spread illness.Cross-contamination isn't the only problem. Handling food the wrong way can make things worse. Washing raw meat in the sink might seem clean, but it actually spreads bacteria to your board, sink, and counters. Using the same board for different foods without cleaning it well lets fats, proteins, and juices build up, which helps bacteria grow. If your board is cracked, chipped, or has deep grooves, it's a warning sign. These spots can trap bacteria that survive even after washing, leading to foodborne illness. Research shows that without proper cleaning, cutting boards can stay contaminated for hours or even days. Here's the good news: you can avoid these problems with a few simple habits. Start by using separate cutting boards—one just for raw meats, poultry, and seafood, and another for fruits, vegetables, bread, and cooked foods. Keeping them separate greatly reduces the risk of cross-contamination. You can also color-code your boards, like using red for meat and green for produce, to make it easy to remember, especially if you share your kitchen.Cleaning your cutting board is the next important step. After each use, scrape off any leftover food with a spatula, then wash the board in hot, soapy water with a brush or sponge to reach any grooves. Rinse well to remove all soap. Sanitizing is also key to eliminating any remaining bacteria. For both wood and plastic boards, mix one tablespoon of unscented liquid chlorine bleach with a gallon of water, pour it over the board, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse and let it air-dry. According to the FDA, washing your cutting boards and utensils with hot, soapy water after each use helps disinfect them and reduces the risk of cross-contamination.Read the Full Content HereChef Walters Food + Wine ToursChef Walters Cooking SchoolSimVal Media, USA

With nearly five decades of clinical experience, Mark Birch breaks down why hair health starts at the scalp—not supplements, transplants, or trends. This episode dismantles common myths, explains why hair loss has accelerated globally, and shows how daily habits, environment, stress, and product choice quietly determine whether hair thrives or thins.Key Discussion Highlights Mark explains that the scalp is the fastest-aging skin on the body and requires daily care, much like teeth or facial skin. Poor hygiene, clogged follicles, harsh chemicals, and misinformation drive unnecessary hair loss. Dubai's environment—hard water, constant air-conditioning, UV exposure, and humidity—adds extra stress, making maintenance even more critical.Hair loss is not one condition; there are 40+ types, influenced by genetics, hormones, stress, medications, nutrition, and lifestyle. While genetics set the blueprint, daily care determines how aggressively hair loss expresses. Mark emphasizes that most people spend money on treatments before fixing basics like scalp cleanliness, pH balance, and circulation—often worsening the problem. The episode also explores nutrition, stress, sleep, exercise, chemical processing, styling products, oils, and why many “natural” hacks (onions, oils, mud, DIY remedies) can actually damage the scalp. Technology like red-light therapy and circulation-boosting tools can help—but only after the foundation is right.Key Takeaways • Hair health begins with scalp hygiene, not pills or procedures • Washing the scalp daily with the right shampoo improves circulation and growth • Most hair loss is preventable or slowable with proper maintenance • Harsh chemicals, oils, and styling products clog follicles and accelerate thinning • Transplants fail without proper pre- and post-scalp care5 Things You Can Start Doing TodayWash your scalp daily with a shampoo suited to your scalp type (not trends or scents).Use a conditioner every wash and a nourishing hair mask once weekly.Stop applying oils, gels, waxes, or DIY remedies directly to the scalp.Prioritize sleep, stress reduction, protein intake, and whole-food nutrition.Treat hair like skin: cleanse after sweating, swimming, beach exposure, or heavy styling. This episode is a reset: hair health isn't complicated—but it is disciplined. Clean scalp, correct products, consistency, and respect for biology win every time.
This split in preferences reveals a fascinating double standard in how people think about honesty. Research published in the British Journal of Social Psychology shows that a clear majority of people want truthful feedback for themselves. The trend of “AI-washing,” is where companies will cite AI as the reason for layoffs that might actually be caused by other factors, like over-hiring during the pandemic. AI was the stated reason for more than 50,000 layoffs in 2025, with Amazon and Pinterest among the tech companies that blamed the technology for recent cuts. The North Face's iconic Summit Series collection has not only been a part of some of the greatest athletic feats of the past 25 years, it's also had a major influence on the technical apparel we all use today. In this 2-for-1 conversation, Luke Koppa dives into its backstory, major milestones, and standout pieces with The North Face's Global Head of Innovation, Cory Olson. He also talks with the one and only Sage Cattabriga-Alosa to get his perspective as an athlete who's been involved with this series for its entire run — including how he went from hitting backcountry booters in the baggiest clothes he could find, to summiting high-altitude peaks in the most technical gear on the market.RELATED LINKS:Episode Sponsor: SnowbirdEpisode Sponsor: OpenSnowEnter Our Weekly Gear GiveawaysOur Blister Recommended ShopsJoin Us At Blister Summit 2026For BLISTER+ Members: Discounted Blister Summit RegistrationGet Yourself Covered with BLISTER+CHECK OUT OUR YOUTUBE CHANNELS:Blister Studios (our new channel)Blister Review (our original channel)TOPICS & TIMES:OpenSnow (2:09)Snowbird (4:25)Weekly Gear Giveaway (6:03)Sage's History w/ The North Face (7:10)Sage's Ah-Ha Moments w/ Apparel (23:00)Layering Evolution (36:30)Sage's Standout Products (40:56)Cory Olson's Role at The North Face (49:52)Historic and Throwback Pieces (54:14)Standouts Materials (56:36)Athlete Feedback & Design Impact (1:01:11)PFAS-Free Apparel: Present & Future (1:05:19)Care & Washing (1:10:20)Himalayan Suit (1:18:58)Summit Series x Streetwear (1:23:30)Future Projects (1:32:01)CHECK OUT OUR OTHER PODCASTS:Blister CinematicCRAFTEDBikes & Big IdeasBlister Podcast Hosted on Acast.
