SHOW NOTES: Welcome back to The Money Pit! It's getting chilly out, so we're focused on preparing a cozier home for the colder season ahead. Give us a call now at 888 Money Pit, but first, listen in for this week's topics and DIY caller questions! - Fireplace Safety Check: Before striking that first match for a cozy fire, pay attention to our quick fireplace safety checklist. We'll walk you through tips to tackle before lighting your first log. - Pre-Winter Power Washing: Before winter wraps your home in a snowy blanket, it's a great time to give your exterior a deep clean. Coming up, we're talking about the power of power washing! From removing grime and mildew to making your walkways safer and your house sparkle for the holidays, we'll share why this quick weekend project is the ultimate pre-winter refresh. - Smoke Detector & Cold Prep Reminders: Changing the clocks is a perfect reminder to replace the batteries in all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and to swap out any units that are more than 10 years old. Other quick prep tasks include reversing ceiling fan direction, inspecting weather stripping, and cleaning the HVAC filter. - Wallpaper Accents: In Leslie's Last Word, we discuss how wallpaper is having a serious design moment and can be used sparingly and stylishly as an accent in small spaces like powder rooms or inside decorative molding for instant impact.   Q & A: - Mara in Louisiana wanted to screen in or convert part of her two-story porch on her 1910 home, which has 22 large Corinthian columns. We explain that trying to work around or box in the unique columns would severely change the architectural style of her beautiful home, and recommend consulting with an architect for a major redesign. - David in Anchorage, Alaska, was preparing to tile a bathroom wall that featured a "knockdown" texture, and he needed to know what prep work was necessary. We suggest that he lightly sand the raised spots or score them with a knife to provide a clean, flatter surface for the tile adhesive. - Stacy in Minnesota wanted to update her 1968 fireplace by filling in the mortar between the bricks and then applying a lime wash. We explain that a lime wash won't absorb correctly into brick as it does with wood grain, and she should instead consider alternatives like tiling, using faux stone fascia, or applying stucco. - John in Florida stripped his entire house down to the studs and asked if "cocooning" his home with spray foam insulation was a good idea. We affirm that spray foam is an excellent method for achieving energy efficiency, especially since the walls were open, and we note that breathability issues are rare in existing homes.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? Is is already too late to save US democracy? In this week's The Lowdown, Nick Cohen asks Edward Luce - the Washing-based editor & columnist of the Financial Times - is it already too late to save the US? Trump is already trying to gerrymander the critical 2026 mid-term elections by demanding re-districting of states like Texas to produce more Republican states. Also, he repeatedly threatens to invoke the Insurrection Act to further threaten freedom, and sends ICE agents and troops into peaceful Democrat cities to intimidate them. Nick and Edward discuss the institutional purges, widespread corruption, and the chilling effect of Trump's personal vendettas on free speech and political opposition. Edward Luce, explores how Trump's presidency has eroded traditional American values and institutions, noting the widespread fear and self-censorship that has developed across society.Fear stalks AmericaLuce says fear stalks the US and that the richest are the most afraid because they feel they have the most to lose. Trump's henchmen denounce Democrats as terrorists and traitors, while destroying the freedoms of much of the mainstream media. Edward says, " [Trump's] not only getting away with it, but sort of doing it so easily, steamrolling these guardrails, these traditions so easily... because he comes at the end of 20/30 years worth of declining trust in institutions, and of growing cynicism about institutions and about the media, not just about elected politicians."No King's Day but no objective for the opposition either!Luce says the US needs a Martin Luther King type figure to lead the opposition against Trump's growing tyranny, adding "What is it that the No Kings Rally (on October 18th) is demanding? I don't know. It's, it's saying Trump's a king. He's behaving like a king. He's doing what he likes. There's no restraint on him, all of which is true. But what's the deliverable here?"Edward adds, "Democracy is about. Winning and winning is about building coalitions. And building coalitions is an additive game. You actually link arms with people you might disagree with on important issues like, for example, abortion, or gun control, whatever it might be, or taxes and you hold your nose and say, look, we've got something bigger in common here."Read all about it! The Truth Behind Fake AI Projects: Understanding AI Washing

In this episode, Ricardo discusses AI washing, a growing trend where organizations falsely claim to use artificial intelligence. Similar to greenwashing, AI washing occurs when companies exaggerate their AI capabilities to attract investors or appear innovative. In reality, many so-called AI systems are just basic automation or rule-based tools. This practice creates serious risks, including loss of credibility, legal issues, and project failure. Vargas highlights warning signs: flashy storytelling over science, unrealistic promises, lack of true AI experts, neglect of data quality, and poor governance. He explains that real AI projects require transparency, solid data, ethics, and humility—reminding project managers to avoid overpromising and to focus on genuine, data-driven value instead of hype. Last week we looked at a hymn which was instructional on the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper. This weekend we will focus on the Sacrament of Baptism. Both the the Lord's Supper and Baptism are works of God, not of man. The Apostle Paul wrote in Titus 3:4-7: "But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life." Notice how Paul shows clearly that this is the work of God, not of man. God is at work in the "Washing of regeneration." In Baptism, the blessings of Christ's work for sinners becomes mine (and yours) personally! Jesus died for the world of sinners, but the benefits of His work (forgiveness of sins, life and salvation) only become ours through the working of the Holy Spirit who creates faith in the hearts of sinners. In Baptism, God puts His name on us, and receives us, by adoption, into His family. This is what Baptism is all about. Paul writes in Ephesians 5:25-27: "...Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish." Thanks be to God! All that God has done for us in Christ and through Baptism gives us motivation to sing praises to God, faithfully, thankfully, and joyfully! Lift your voices this weekend and join together with your fellow believers to sing praise to God for His work of salvation in the cross and received through Baptism! May the LORD bless your worship!

This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with Brooklyn- based independent singer and songwriter Charlie Kaplan. Charlie has released three solo albums to date, each excellent in their own right, and he is the bassist in the art-pop quartet Office Culture. Charlie also helms the independent record label Glamour Gowns Records. His latest album, A Hat Upon The Bed, is the focus of this episode.A man pleads with the sky for Halley's Comet to return. Washing the dishes devolves into a catastrophic anxiety spiral. Figuring out which key the microwave emits could foretell the secret of the universe. Messages of love extend to people who cannot receive them. These are some of the magical, everyday scenarios that singer-songwriter Charlie Kaplan weaves throughout his epic new album, A Hat Upon The Bed, all in service of surveying the unknowability of death. Drawing on the flood of love and pain that arrived during his “fatherless decade” — spanning the loss of his father in 2013 and the birth of his son in 2025 — the album pairs the strongest writing of Kaplan's career with music that matches its untameable ambition and empathy.Order Charlie Kaplan's The Hat Upon The Bed now! Shout out to Littletownknitter–Tracy who is recovering from surgery. Bailey finished her Companion Dog (CD) title. Marsha's Projects Rag Rugs: Finished! Planned on two 24”x36” rugs. Final size 28”x32”. Such a fun project! Socks: Finished! Paton Kroy in colorway Rag Rug. Socks: Using Red Heart Heart and Sole in colorway Black Jack. Working on foot of the first sock. Mountain High: Heidi Kirrmaier. Using my handspun Flowers From My Garden.  Deer Scarf: Ben and his roommates rescued a concrete deer lawn ornaments. I am making a red scarf for the deer to wear this holiday.  Weaving Studio: It's a work in progress. Spent some time cleaning the studio after the rag rug weaving. Weaving creates lots of dust, threads, and pieces of fabric. Cleaned desk and set up sewing machine which I think will work well for sewing. I'm trying not to buy anything for the studio but find what I have around the house and make it work. Kelly's Projects Started and finished spirit yarn hat #6. Took it to the college free table even though it was muggy and 70-ish this week.  More Izzy Bears have ears!  Still almost finished with Lace and Fade Boxy by Joji Locatelli. Using a merino silk handspun along with a skein of Sincere Sheep Vernal (silk/linen). I'm on the ribbing and using a 1x1 broken rib based on Marsha's suggestion. Fireweed Socks are finished and have been worn. Love the color!  Continued Combing the remaining CVM. Debating washing the stickiest leftovers of this fleece or consigning them to the compost and calling the combing done.  Washing and Processing Ernest (2017 fleece) Still carding the first batch this fleece with silk. Still have to finish washing the last couple batches.  Natural Dyeing Experiments I dyed three small white skeins from spirit wool (about 150 g) with fig leaves. I pre-mordanted the wool with alum, rinsed it and let it dry. Then I put it in a dyepot that had simmered for many hours. The result is a greenish gold.  Future natural dyes from my yard—toyon leaves/twigs, ceanothus leaves/twigs. Also have some dried tan oak leaves from a long ago camping trip. Another possibility is to vary the water I use. I may experiment with ocean water. My tap water is quite hard so playing with the pH of my water is another possibility. Be My Burning Guest I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride; I have gathered my myrrh along with my balsam. I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey; I have drunk my wine and my milk. Eat, friends; drink and imbibe deeply, O lovers.” Last week, we learned: "Of all the righteous ones of Scripture, Avraham and Sarah were the best known for hospitality to strangers, especially when they received the three angels. (So 5:1) Good gardening is good hospitality to the voice of Adonai, His holy Presence. Because human beings, particularly believers walking in the Way of Yeshua, are in His image, practicing hospitality toward people of faith is an especially sweet fruit of the Ruach HaKodesh." Hospitality prepares us to be a part of the Garden of Eden conversation in the Scripture above. We can both invite the Bridegroom hospitably and remain in the Garden because we possess the vital character of hospitality without which a human cannot remain in the Garden. We can be a worthy guest...and friend...who will bless the Garden. To get a better handle on this trait, let's take a careful look at what hospitality is. What does the word mean? Hospitality: Middle English hospital, "residence for pilgrims and travelers, charitable institution providing residence for the poor and infirm," "guest accommodations" (probably by ellipsis from hospit?le cubiculum "sleeping room for guests"), noun derivative of hospit?lis "of a guest, of hospitality, hospitable” The Hebrew word for “guest” is kara ????? The KJV translates Strong's H7121 in the following manner: call (528x), cried (98x), read (38x), proclaim (36x), named (7x), guests (4x), invited (3x), gave (3x), renowned (3x), bidden (2x), preach (2x) Outline of Biblical Usage to call, call out, recite, read, cry out, proclaim (Qal) to call, cry, utter a loud sound to call unto, cry (for help), call (with name of God) to proclaim to read aloud, read (to oneself), read to summon, invite, call for, call and commission, appoint to call, name, give name to, call by The Book of Leviticus is "Vayikra" ["and called"], a book of holies, our calling to create a sanctuary of holiness for YHVH. This hospitality “preaches” His Presence to the earth and His desire to dwell with us. The Torah describes to us our holy "calling." Not only that, Adonai listens to the cries / proclamations of human beings, especially the poor and distressed. Somewhere in this world, your name can be proclaimed to Heaven, either in frustration, agony, and pain, or in gratefulness, relief, and consolation. How this works is that the needy “give name to” the situation in that home or community. A guest can “summon” Adonai's attention for blessing or chaos. He will actually come investigate the call for Divine help or proclamation of gratefulness! • Now the LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day. When he raised his eyes and looked, behold, three men were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed down to the ground, and said, “My Lord, if now I have found favor in Your sight, please do not pass Your servant by. Please let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and make yourselves comfortable under the tree; and I will bring a piece of bread, so that you may refresh yourselves; after that you may go on, since you have visited your servant.” (Ge 18:1-5) Avraham understood what a special opportunity he had. Without a guest, who would bless? Righteous guests are given a Divine mandate to bless or destroy a home. It's an apocalyptic opportunity symbolic of the end of days. Washing feet and providing a safe place to rest with food is the ancient practice of hospitality to guests, especially honored guests. Yeshua told his disciples to honor one another, not a new commandment, but an affirmation and demonstration of an old pattern of hospitality.

New leaks from friend-of-the-show MLiD have given us a deeper glimpse into Sony's plans for PlayStation 6, especially when it comes to the rumored handheld iteration, codenamed Canis. It appears this device -- slated as part of a potential trio of PS6 hardware due out in '27 -- will be affordable, powerful, and perhaps most surprisingly dockable. With all first party competitors now occupying space (Nintendo, Valve) or chasing a presence (Sony, Microsoft) in the handheld realm, it seems like things could get very spicy on multiple fronts. Allow us to discuss in minute detail. Plus: Hermen Hulst gives a rare interview, Ken Levine emerges with hot-off-the-presses details about Judas, Sony reveals its first four incubated products in the MENA Hero Project, it'll now be easier to request a refund on PSN, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Some 14 years after release, what are our thoughts on Catherine? Could a major Xbox announcement be lurking in Sony's reported September showcase?
