There are all sorts of blocks that get in the way of us connecting to our creativity, our life force. There's the inner critic, and then there are the outer critics. There's perfectionism, and the fear that “it's all been done before.” There's the despair of "not enough," and the ache of lacking inspiration. Even after we've bushwhacked our way through the thickets of inner resistance to actually create something, we often prick ourselves on thorny choices around sharing what we've made. How do we know when it's time to share, or if it ever needs to be shared? Is wanting to share our creativity inherently narcissistic? What if we get attention for it? What if no one pays attention? What's the point of all of it, anyway? All of this, and more, in today's episode. Not only did she lose her job during the pandemic but she lost her mother, too. In this episode, Erika Carter shares her story of losing her job at Flywheel Sports after 9 years when the world shut down in 2020 and then how her mother lost her battle to Pancreatic cancer less than a year later. Erika's story is one of finding strength in community, purpose through death and setting the best example for your children while going through the most traumatic time of your own life. A Note from Brijet & Kodette : With the coincidental timing of the release of Erika Carter's premier episode with us on May 31st (yet recorded in April) we knew that we needed to invite her back for a potentially uncomfortable conversation; one that people everywhere are trying to navigate, which is the grotesque reality of Racism. The bonus footage, recorded subsequent to recent dramatic events, shows the raw emotion Erika feels as she shares her own biracial family's apprehension in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder. We are grateful to Erika for letting us walk down this path with her while she guides us through our own insecurities about the significance of current events associated with racism & gently reminds ALL of us that "It's ok to make mistakes ... that's how we learn."

Rolling with it, is how Erika Carter operates... as an athlete with a gift for communicating and the ability to embrace new beginnings, it seems she was meant to be on this life journey alongside her husband, Anson Carter (NHL alumni & current analyst on NBC sports & MSG). Her education and career path kept her literally & figuratively "on the move" long before she met Anson, and hockey came in to dictate ;)! kodette, Brij and Erika take the conversation from Rhode Island to San Francisco, 3-city-seasons to Gold-Medal-Goals and from "fancy" cars to Erika's (kickass) virtual fitness classes.... all the way from "HOT-LANTA"!!!

In this episode, I'm talking to Erika Carter, author of the novel Lucky You, an NPR Best Book of 2017 and Book of the Month Club selection. Lucky You follows three 20-something women who are struggling with identity, purpose and meaning, and looking for love, health and happiness in all the wrong places. Erika and I talk about her life as a writer, the confusion of early adulthood, and balancing skepticism with sensitivity.  You can learn more about the topics covered and references made in the episode by visiting the Shownotes page.
