Immersive events have really taken off in the last decade. Building on events like Renaissance fairs, L.A.R.P.s, and other themed festivals, Wasteland Weekend and now Neotropolis (along with several others inspired by them) are costumes-mandatory festivals with fully themed areas where no-one looks out of place.  You can choose to be in character or just be yourself, but either way - you're in it! Bridger Farlander has been attending Wasteland Weekend (Yearly in September) for almost a decade, but is not able to attend Neotropolis (yearly in April) due to work constraints, but that doesn't stop him from getting in on the immersion.  He's created Network 42 - a cyber-punk inspired news network that's broadcasting from "back on Earth" in middle Tennessee.  Find out how it works and how you can get involved.   FB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61553014967306 Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@Network42FortyTwo   If you dig this channel and think I've earned your support, please consider joining my Patreon where you'll get early access to every video and be able to join the Patch of the Month Club ($10+ tiers). www.patreon.com/theapocalypsepost

The ‘Book of the Month Club' was first launched, on March 10th, 1826. Its inaugural selection, ‘Lolly Willows' by feminist Bloomsbury author Sylvia Townsend Warner, underscores the transformative power that such clubs would go on to have (via celebrity endorsements such as Oprah and Richard & Judy): Warner leveraged her selection as a springboard for wider literary recognition in the United States. The visionary behind the Book of the Month Club, Harry Sherman, recognised the untapped potential of marketing literature to broader audiences. Leveraging his marketing acumen and passion for reading, Sherman had pioneered innovative strategies to democratise access to books, first partnering with Whitman Candy to distribute the ‘Little Leather Library'; miniature classics posted to readers alongside a box of chocolates, which became a popular gift to give soldiers during World War I. In this episode, The Retrospectors explain the importance of the Book Club's discerning editorial panel; reveal the literary sensations first given the limelight via Sherman's company; and consider how shifting market dynamics and the advent of digital platforms diminished the club's relevance - but then bought it back again… Further Reading: • ‘A New Reading Experience: Book of the Month Club' (Pennsylvania Center for the Book, 2010): https://pabook.libraries.psu.edu/literary-cultural-heritage-map-pa/feature-articles/new-reading-experience-book-month-club • ‘Sylvia Townsend Warner's Lolly Willowes is 'a great shout of life'' (The Guardian, 2016): https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2016/dec/28/sylvia-townsend-warners-lolly-willowes-is-a-great-shout-of-life • ‘Comparing the Most Popular Book Box Subscriptions

I want to set you up for success by helping your future self. If you can learn to create boundaries, rules and non-negotiables, you will be able to look back on your current self and say, “thank you for doing that”.This does not mean that you have to change, but it does require that your actions and how you show up is different from what you are doing. You have to ask yourself, what's working, what's not and what can you outsource. Answering these questions will help you set boundaries for yourself and it will make the processes in your business more streamlined and simplified. So what does this look like for you? I'm sharing with you my boundaries and non-negotiables in hopes to inspire you to set some rules of your own. TAKEAWAYS:People who are not entrepreneurs don't get an opinion in your business. It's not helpful. You could benefit from trying this. Set a schedule, and don't overcommit. While you might sometimes want to say yes to everything, consider what you can do to simplify what's best for you and how you show up for your clients. 100% unavailable for procrastination. Most people typically procrastinate on things outside of their comfort zone or things they don't like doing. Try doing those things you're avoiding first and plan certain tasks into your schedule. Do not rush for the sake of getting something done. The work you do should be focused and streamlined, have a clear intention of an ROI, and be the highest quality you are capable of creating. Any activity you decide to participate in should be high quality. RESOURCES:Visit the blog post that goes along with this episode for more resourcesWant a backstage pass to the Funnel of the Month Club? Every year, the Multnomah County Library chooses one book they hope the whole city of Portland will read. Between January and April, the Library, and their partner organizations, host events based around the themes of the book, and they distribute thousands of free copies—thanks to the Library Foundation—to readers of all ages from across the county. Here at Literary Arts, our role is to bring the author to town for a talk in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.   This year, the 2025 Everybody Reads selection is the memoir Solito by Javier Zamora. For information about how to engage with the program, visit the Multnomah County Library's web site. I am thrilled to say Javier Zamora will be in Portland on Tuesday, March 11 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall for the culminating event of the 2025 Everybody Reads Program.   For now, let's return to the 2024 Everybody Reads event, featuring Gabrielle Zevin and her novel Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.   Gabrielle Zevin has been steadily publishing fiction for almost two decades and has also written occasional criticism as well as award-winning screenplays. But it was Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow that catapulted her to the stratosphere of literary stardom. It was a #1 New York Times bestseller and spent over 50 weeks on the fiction bestseller list.    To be sure, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is about video games, and makes a convincing argument for the power and potential of narrative storytelling in video games. But really, it is about making art, and questions about originality, appropriation, and ambition that come with that pursuit. And perhaps more so, it is a love story, about friends and creative partners, and the excitement, joy, tragedy, and betrayal that come with any long relationship. It's about something, I'd wager, we've all been thinking about the past few years: connection.    Tickets for Everybody Reads 2025 with Javier Zamora are on sale now! Find your tickets here.  Gabrielle Zevin is a New York Times best-selling novelist whose books have been translated into forty languages.   Her tenth novel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, was a New York Times Best Seller, a Sunday Times Best Seller, and a selection of the Tonight Show's Fallon Book Club. Tomorrow was Amazon.com's #1 Book of the Year, Time Magazine's #1 Book of the Year, a New York Times Notable Book, and the winner of both the Goodreads Choice Award for Fiction and the Book of the Month Club's Book of the Year. Following a twenty-five-bidder auction, the feature film rights to Tomorrow were acquired by Temple Hill and Paramount Studios.  The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry also spent many months on the New York Times Best Seller List. A.J. Fikry was honored with the Southern California Independent Booksellers Award for Fiction, the Japan Booksellers' Prize, among other honors. A.J. Fikry is now a feature film with a screenplay by Zevin. She has also written children's books, including the award-winning Elsewhere.   She is the screenwriter of Conversations with Other Women (Helena Bonham Carter) for which she received an Independent Spirit Award Nomination for Best First Screenplay. She has occasionally written criticism for the New York Times Book Review and NPR's All Things Considered, and she began her writing career, at age fourteen, as a music critic for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. Zevin is a graduate of Harvard University. She lives in Los Angeles.

It's not always fun talking about pain points in your marketing, but I want to show you how you can talk about pain points and not feel like a salesy jerk. Your ideal client has a problem they want to solve. And your program or offer can solve that pain point. So you talking about pain points can help a lot of people to understand more about how you can help them. ...when you do it the right way.TAKEAWAYS:Speaking about pain points helps your audience feel understood. Your audience wants to feel seen and heard so when you talk about pain points, you are validating their experience and concerns. You owe it to your audience to tell them what you offer. If you don't call out these symptoms as a great fit to work with you, how will they ever know you can actually help them? Not all marketing needs to be pain point marketing. Remember that there are 7 types of buyers and pain point marketing only targets one type of buyer. So use the pain point marketing technique, but don't shift all your marketing. RESOURCES:Visit the blog post that goes along with this episode for more resourcesCheck out Polly the Pitch Sequence Generator and create unlimited Email Pitch Sequences in a matter of (literal) minutesIf you want to learn more about AI assistants, listen to episode 413Want a backstage pass to the Funnel of the Month Club? I've never found the Welcome Sequence in an email funnel effective. I'm not a huge fan because these tend to be all about you as the business owner. I know the intention behind it is to establish you as an expert and deliver value, but I think the way it's presented is fatally flawed. So how do we get our ideal customers to a point where the pitch for your offer makes sense?Listen to the episode to hear why I think Welcome Sequences are dead and what to do instead. TAKEAWAYS:Help your leads have a mindset shift. Think about how you can come to the pain point for your ideal client from a different perspective. When they think differently about their pain point, they act differently. You can still establish yourself as the expert. The focus of a Welcome Sequence is still useful, we just have to get there differently. So make sure that you are actually trying to help someone and that you are super intentional about what you share and how you share it. Establish the know, like, trust factor. If you've strategized your content, and they've paid attention, when they get to the Pitch Sequence, it will be an easier transition. They won't live in decision fatigue because you will have given them more knowledge and power. Your offer won't come as a surprise and this will help increase your sales.RESOURCES:Check out the blog post that goes along with this episode for additional resourcesJoin the Funnel of the Month Club and sell your course or membership on autopilot with email marketingSnag a seat in Allison's Sell on Autopilot Masterclass, and learn how to use email marketing to sell while you sleep (or, ‘ya know…live your actual life!)CONNECT WITH ALLISON:Follow Allison on InstagramDID YOU HAVE AN 'AH-HA MOMENT' WHILE LISTENING TO THIS EPISODE?If you found value and are ready to take action from listening to this episode, head to Apple Podcasts and help us reach new audiences by giving the podcast a rating and a review.
