June 1, 2017: Mommi was born. Former Autostraddle writer Erin Sullivan and current Autostraddle managing editor Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya co-wrote an article titled, “Mommi Is the New Daddy” and our lives were never the same. Whether you are a mommi, like to date mommis, or are just an admirer from afar, we all have reasons to appreciate this gay archetype named a mere five years ago. But amid all this mommi madness, what about the actual moms? Some moms are mommis, but, of course, not all. And while we love to discuss mommis, moms — like people with actual children — are sometimes left out of the gay dating convo. And that's why we're so excited that for our season two premiere we have Autostraddle's director of operations — and real-life mom — Laneia Jones to talk to Christina and I about all things dating as a mom. And before that great convo, we have mommi co-creator Kayla on to play a little mommi game! Follow us on Instagram and Twitter at @waitisthisadate SUPPORT INDEPENDENT QUEER MEDIA! It’s our first-ever live episode of To L and Back, recorded live at A-Camp! Join us — and special guests Be Steadwell, Marni Kellison, Laneia Jones and two “margaritas” as we tackle the Dinah Shore episode. Dana will meet Tonya, her guest liaison, who is the worst, and Shane will recall the girl who took her sunshine toy and then her heart, and Jenny, who is not a 100-footer, will buy a “lesbians wanted” t-shirt and deliver a short monologue on the topic of Marina. We will talk about how hot Candace the Carpenter is when she’s out here workin’, and our own Dinah Shore medical emergencies, and the truth about cats and dogs and lesbians and the harmonies of “Closer to Fine” and when we’re done, everybody will go to the pool! Just watch out for disease okay? Shane might not be around to leave you a bottle of water. Check out Autostraddle.com for your weekly episode footnotes and musical complaints. Dear Prudence | Advice on relationships, sex, work, family, and life
Prudence is joined this week by Laneia Jones, the executive editor of Autostraddle dot com, an independently-run online community for queer women and nonbinary people. Together they tackle letters about what to do with a mother-in-law who demands that you disinvite her gay daughter to your wedding, how to handle racist neighbors who might take issue with your house-sitting guests, should you tell your husband that you can’t take anymore unplanned house guests, how to explain to dates that your cousin is raising your child with your ex-girlfriend, what actions to take when you accidentally lose your paycheck, how to decide if you should accept a dream job, even though it may not pay enough. Slate Plus members will hear Prudie and Jones discuss a letter writer who’s wondering if she should end a friendship with a couple who revealed interest in exploring a polyamorous relationship.
