In this powerful episode of Sex with Emily, Dr. Emily sits down with Jeffrey Marsh, the first openly non-binary public figure interviewed on national television, author of "How to Be You," and a Zen-trained meditation teacher who has helped millions embrace self-acceptance. This conversation goes deep into identity, authenticity, and the radical act of loving yourself exactly as you are. Jeffrey shares their journey from childhood feelings of not fitting into traditional gender roles to becoming a leading voice for non-binary visibility and self-compassion. We explore the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation, the importance of using correct pronouns as basic respect, and how Jeffrey's 20+ years of Zen practice has shaped their approach to self-love and helping others break free from shame. This episode addresses the real challenges of coming out, setting boundaries with family, and the courage it takes to live authentically in a world that often demands conformity. Jeffrey offers practical wisdom on moving from self-criticism to self-acceptance, why asking for what you need is essential for healthy relationships, and how their work helps people - especially parents - learn to support LGBTQ+ loved ones. Whether you're exploring your own identity, supporting someone in your life, or simply want to understand how to love yourself more fully, this conversation offers profound insights on breaking free from societal expectations and embracing your authentic self. Welcome back to Queer Wrath Month, Neurodivergent Creative! In this episode, Caitlin dives deep into nonbinary gender identity—what it is, what it isn't, and why it's time we unlearn the binaries we've been spoon-fed... because apparently, it's 2025 and some of y'all still think gender has only two options like it's a sad vending machine. (ugh!)If you're nonbinary, this episode is for you.If you're confused about what it means, this episode is for you.If you're mad about it... you might need to hear it even more. The truth is gender diversity has alwaaaays existed. If you can believe in left-handed people, redheads, and the periodic table of elements, you can believe in nonbinary folks too. It's time we bust these binaries, call out all these cisnomartive nonsense, and wear your gender however the hell you want.

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law on Wednesday that bans gender-affirming medical care for minors. For many transgender people, the ruling is yet another setback in a long line of attacks on their rights that stretches back through most of human history. And yet, transgender people have created a rich legacy throughout, especially in the Bay Area. Two new projects highlight their stories. One is a KQED series profiling important trans artists and activists from the 1890s-2000s. Another is a new book, “So Many Stars: An Oral History of Trans, Nonbinary, Genderqueer, and Two-Spirit People of Color”. We'll talk to their creators and an expert in gender law about the court's decision and what lessons we can take from trans history. Guests: Nastia Voynovskaya, editor and reporter, KQED Arts Caro De Robertis, author, "So Many Stars: an Oral History of Trans, Nonbinary, Genderqueer, and Two Spirit People of Color"; They are also the author of the novels "The Palace of Eros," "The President and the Frog," "Cantoras," "The Gods of Tango," "Perla" and "The Invisible Mountain." Your child says, “Mom, I'm Gay!”You want to shove those words back in and put the lid on. But you can't. Your child is gay or bisexual or transgender. This goes against everything you've been taught. It was not what you had in mind, and you instantly wonder where you went wrong. When you become a parent, you know to expect the unexpected. But for many Christian parents, nothing can prepare them to hear this from their child. I invite you to sit down, relax, maybe get a cup of tea, and soak in what we talk about today. My hope is to guide you as we walk for a bit through this maze of confusion, to help you find your way to wholeness.Whether you have been on this journey for days or decades, this is a wonderful episode for you. Send us a private message. *Note: INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS if you'd like us to answer. :-) Support the show

In this episode of Voices of Esalen, host Sam Stern sits down with two members of the Esalen community, Sarah Lavelle (also known as Sawyer) and Abigail Barnes (also known as Bo), for a heartfelt conversation about non-binary identity, self-expression, and the journey of living beyond the binary. Topics include personal stories, pronouns, the evolving language of gender, and the beauty and difficulty of being one's authentic self in a world still learning how to understand. Sawyer is a longtime full-spectrum doula, facilitator, and devoted practitioner of meditation, Buddha-dharma, and Relational Gestalt Practice in the tradition of Dick Price and Dorothy Charles. A seeker of liberation for all beings, they embody presence and compassion in all they do. Abigail is a teacher at Big Sur Park School and a beloved presence in the Esalen lodge. Passionate about solitude, Kaula Tantric yoga, and the study of Gestalt, they will soon continue their journey in Stockholm, Sweden, exploring consciousness and education across cultures. Whether you're deeply familiar with non-binary experiences or just beginning to learn, this conversation offers something for everyone: insight, openness, and the radical courage of being. While Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity (DEI) has been a topic of heated debate in the media of late, the call to value every person is nothing new—it's at the heart of the Gospel. Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus radically included those who were excluded and stood up against injustice; showing us how important diversity is and how we should be living our lives in a way that challenges all forms of discrimination, just as He did. This week Cherlyn Chia, Co-leads of MIC's Queer Women of Colour Life Group and MIC's Praise and Worship Ministry, generously shares moments from her own life that inspired her to look deeply into the significance of standing up for equity not only for her life, but for those around her, and looking into the bible to see God's plan for diversity. To support the ministry of Melbourne Inclusive Church go to: www.michurch.org.au/giveMelbourne Inclusive Church boldly and proudly proclaims Christ's equal love for all people regardless of their ability, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, age, gender, race, ethnicity, or culture.Melbourne Inclusive Church is part of the EMI Global family of churches.

In this inspiring episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I have the pleasure of  welcoming  the incredible Jeanne Wolz—entrepreneur, career alignment coach, and founder of Sirens Rising.  Jeanne joins the podcast to share her personal journey from educator to purpose-driven business owner, and how she now helps women and non-binary folks align their careers with their deepest callings.  Jeanne and I dig into what it really means to listen to your calling, move through the fear that comes with it, and take small but powerful steps toward creating a life—and career—that feels meaningful. This conversation goes beyond just personal growth; it's also about how we, as parents, can model courage and action for our kids. Jeanne helps us explore how embracing our own callings and standing up for what we believe in helps raise children who are empowered to do the same.  This episode is a gentle reminder to all of us that taking action isn't just brave—it's a vital part of who we are. By taking one small step at a time, and empowering our kids to do the same, we really can make a difference.  Resources: sirensrising.co Playing Big with Tara Mohr Raising Antiracist Children by Britt Hawthorne Follow Christy @theheartfulparent | Join the Heartful Parent Academy with code PODCAST
