L'été 1977 n'est pas seulement celui où Star Wars triomphe dans les salles américaines et où les Bee Gees enregistrent Saturday Night Fever dans un studio de la région parisienne. Ça étonne toujours, hein, que ces chansons qui incarnent tellement les mythiques discothèques d'Amérique aient été enregistrées par des Anglais dans la campagne française. Et encore, s'il n'y avait que ça. Car en cette année 1977, il y a aussi le punk qui explose à Londres avec les Clash et les Sex Pistols, une musique pourtant au départ typiquement américaine. C'est vrai, la principale colonie se développe depuis maintenant trois bonnes années dans les squats et boîtes pourries de Manhattan. Une véritable fourmilière, une jeunesse aussi remuante et active que le furent bien avant eux des Bob Dylan, Lou Reed et autres Andy Warhol. Disons que l'actuelle est plus radicale musicalement, moins optimiste dans l'esprit mais toujours partante pour une partie de rigolade, peu importe le carburant. Ils n'ont pas un balle, vivent de rien, mangent rarement, ingèrent tout ce qui se boit et s'inhale, alors avec un pédigrée pareil, on n'aurait jamais dû entendre parler d'eux. Mais on est à New York, la ville où si on se fait connaître, on devient célèbre dans le monde entier, dit la chanson.Et c'est vrai que tous ces groupes punks sont signés les uns après les autres par de grandes firmes de disques, ils s'appellent les Talking Heads, Televison ou encore les Ramones. Les seuls de la bande qui sont à la traîne, ce sont les plus barrés mais aussi les plus actifs artistiquement : Blondie. Pourquoi pas eux ? C'est ce que se disent souvent Debbie Harry, la chanteuse, et son compagnon Chris Stein, photographe et guitariste, et leader du groupe. Et quand enfin, un label daigne enfin s'intéresser à d'eux, c'est pas le plus grand. Loin s'en faut. Tenez, on n'a même pas retenu le nom : Private Stock. Mais ils ont le mérite d'y croire. Un 45 Tours d'abord, qui ne marche pas, puis un album, intitulé Blondie qui ne marche pas terrible non plus, sauf en Australie, où un single devient N°1. Mais quand Blondie débarque en Grande-Bretagne, tout change. Le public, d'abord, punk jusqu'à l'os qui pogote du sol au plafond pendant les concerts, puis la presse. Alors que fait leur manager, il va trouver une des grandes maisons de disques britanniques, très actives dans la new wave et leur vend Blondie. Il fait le truc à l'envers ! Chrysalis, c'est son nom, rachète le contrat au petit label new yorkais, et signe avec Blondie ce premier septembre 1977. Dans les bagages de l'album qui est en cours d'enregistrement, un cover dont Blondie a la spécialité, version dynamitée d'un hit view doo wop de 1963 … Denise devient Denis pour des raisons évidentes, et je vais vous dire : tout le monde aurait aimé se prénommer comme ça, Denis, quand Debbie l'a chanté jusqu'au sommet des hits parades européens.
