A decade ago I walked up a few creaky wood stairs onto a covered front porch full of piles of shoes and entered Robin Jackson’s house in Portland, Oregon with the Songwriter Soiree in full swing - a monthly open mic with guest musicians, a fun neighborhood vibe, and a community that welcomed me in and gave me a plate of food and a chair. You may have heard or seen Robin Jackson perform previously in March Fourth Marching Band, Vagabond Opera, or more recently in 2019 with dance/electronic artist, The Polish Ambassador. Robin is a multi-instrumentalist, a man about town, performing with his six-piece band The Caravan when he’s not facilitating retreats or touring with other artists. He has released two albums, Dark Stars (2017) and Dust Diaries (2012), has 10+ years experience touring the world with bands, and hosts the Soiree Retreat, a four-day event open to anyone interested in art, the craft of songwriting, learning music, or enjoying community and connection.Robin talks about life on the road, life after the road, his passion for creating community through hosting music events, and how those events have changed his life.Welcome to Episode 9.MUSIC CREDITSOPHELIA- (INTRO/OUTRO) - LES HAYDENROSES AND GOLD - ROBIN JACKSONDYNOMITE - MARCH 4TH MARCHING BANDOCTOBER RAIN - ROBIN JACKSONPORTLAND TRAFFIC - ROBIN JACKSONHOSTED & RECORDED BY MICHELLE MCAFEEWWW.SONGBONES.COM© 2018-2020 SONGBONES MAGAZINE AND PODCAST

Hello there. Another Coffeeshop Conversation coming to you from OMN via World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan. In the coffeeshop today is Robin Jackson who you may know from March Fourth, Vagabond Opera, the Joy Now Arts Program (a musical circus for kids) and/or his Songwriter Soiree from which his new album, Dark Stars is most connected. It is dropping on Saturday, November 11 with a release show at Secret Society. And it’s coming out at the perfect time. It matches the drippy darkness of Autumn in Portland. “Alchemizes Rainy Day Doldrums” is what he says it does. Let’s find out what’s behind it, and if a revival of Vagabond Opera is possible. He’s been at the center of some of our most memorable music.
January 15, 2015 Skip VonKuske helped found Portland Cello Project, he's an original member of Vagabond Opera, he's in Groovy Wallpaper, he is cellotronik, He likes the way it looks capitalized and with a "k" on the end. This month he is celebrating his tenth anniversary of playing in weekly residency every Monday 7-9pm (free) at McMenamin's Edgefield. How is Skip regarded in the Portland music community? When he hurt his back and had to walk with a cane, people rallied around and held a benefit to help pay for his medical bills. He recovered from that. He seemingly never stops. His life is like his live samples, they just keep playing and adding to each other as he adds new layers.f This post is under the "Melting Pot" category. When OMN first started we held a contest to name it so we'd have a place for bands like PCP. Skip named it and won the contest. As always, our Coffeeshop Conversation took place at World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan in the cupping room:
