Catacombs are subterranean cemeteries, providing eternal rest to those who lie there. Yet they're also mysterious sites, sometimes open to tourists, and less often used for burial. Stretching away below ground as they do, it's easy to imagine what goes on away from prying eyes. But what folklore is attached to these unique locations? Let's explore a handful and see what we find in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! In a country rich with globally top-rated escape rooms, The Catacombs stands out for its commitment to immersion, stunning location and incredible ending. The Netherlands has a vibrant escape room scene, due in part to Alexander's efforts with events like Up The Game, a global escape room conference he co-founded in 2017. Deep Fear is a French-Belgium co-production about three friends who are spending one last day together. One of them is going into the military the next day, so they want this day to be a special one. They decide to take a trip through the Paris catacombs. What is an exciting idea on the surface turns into their worst nightmares.Unsurprisingly, there are lots of tight moments that give a feeling of claustrophobia. While Aril enjoys cave horror, Blake does not like the feeling of getting caught in closed quarters. But did Deep Fear do enough to make either of them feel anything? We also talk about whether the horror aspects worked and the surprising lack of a sense of urgency.Despite its flaws, Deep Fear does a lot of things right. The setting is great and the film does a great job with lighting and shadows. The characters are well-written and there is great attention to detail. Do the pros outweigh the cons or were we all left to disappointed by the narrative? Some Like it Rare also struck a chord with two of us. Nathaniel cannot stand cannibal movies (Thanks, Cannibal Holocaust) while Candance really enjoys them. But what happens when a cannibal movie subverts expectations and becomes more about people staying together than eating each other? The four of us also debate the film's dark humor, discuss why it is an anti-message movie, and talk about the decision-making of the characters. Since it is a cannibal movie, we also wonder if human flesh tastes good. Plus, a conversation on actually being grossed out versus thinking about it.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. October 14: Saint Callistus I, Pope and Martyr

October 14: Saint Callistus I, Pope and Martyrc. Late Second Century–222Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: RedPatron Saint of cemetery workersA slave takes charge of a catacomb and rises to the papacyPopes owned slaves for centuries to row their boats, cook their meals, and care for their horses and carriages. Kings, nobles, and middle-class families owned slaves. Slavery was a ubiquitous institution not necessarily rooted in racism, which was a latecomer as a rationale for enslavement. Rather, prisoners of war and criminals of every skin color were enslaved as alternatives to capital punishment. Others were born into slavery from slave mothers, and still others in desperate circumstances sold themselves into slavery in exchange for food, shelter, and security. Today's saint, according to ancient sources, served as a slave in a Roman home for many years and thus was part of that massive social reality of slavery that not even Saint Paul explicitly condemned in his letter to Philemon. Since he was an intelligent and resourceful servant, Callistus' master put him in charge of his personal bank. But when Callistus lost its deposits, he was blamed and was eventually exiled to the mines of Sardinia. At some point he was released from this hard labor and earned freedom from his slave status.Pope Zephyrinus, elected in 199, placed the capable Callistus in charge of the most important underground Christian cemetery in Rome. Under Callistus it eventually grew into a sprawling, thirteen-mile warren of dark, narrow tunnels lined with tombs chiseled out of the soft tufa stone. 500,000 bodies were encased in its walls! Callistus was so successful in managing the cemetery that it came to bear his name, and bears it still—the Catacombs of Saint Callistus. Besides numerous martyrs, it also houses a famous chapel for nine third-century popes. The Catacombs were ground zero for early Christian devotion in Rome. They were not hiding places from persecution but sacred ground on which to kneel beside a martyr's lifeless body. Saint Jerome himself writes about his regular visits to pray at the martyrs' tombs in the catacombs a century and a half after Callistus expanded them. There were no Viking funerals, Hindu pyres, or urns on the mantle for these early Christians. They believed in the resurrection of the body, as the Church still does. They knew, instinctively, that it was more fitting to bury a body, to keep watch with the dead, than to casually bake a body like a pie.The same Pope Zephyrinus ordained Callistus as a deacon. Deacons have a tighter bond, theologically, with bishops than with priests. Since the Acts of the Apostles, they were ordained specifically to assist the first bishops, the Apostles. The first three centuries of the Church resound with the names of deacons, such as Saints Lawrence and Vincent, who were martyred alongside the popes and bishops they served. Pope Saint Sixtus II was killed, in fact, along with his coterie of deacons after they were all arrested in the Catacombs of Callistus in 258. In approximately 217, Deacon Callistus was elected the Bishop of Rome, crowning his long and arduous path from slavery to a more exalted form of service to the Divine Master as head of the entire Church.Pope Callistus encountered resistance over the perennial third-century theological-pastoral issue of how to reintegrate into the Body of Christ Catholics who had been forced to engage in emperor worship. Callistus held that if God could forgive murder and adultery he could forgive idolatry too. No sin was unforgivable. His bitter enemies, including the first antipope, Hippolytus, considered Callistus too lax and committed their calumnies to writing. This damaged Callistus' reputation into modern times, when scholarship finally called into question the veracity of his enemies' accounts. Saint Callistus' life is not richly detailed, but he died in 222, most likely by martyrdom and, ironically, was not buried in his eponymous Catacomb. His original tomb was rediscovered in 1960. His remains had been transferred in the ninth century to Rome's Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, which tradition holds was built over, or next to, an earlier church of which Callistus was the patron.Saint Callistus, you served an earthly master as a slave and a heavenly master as a deacon and pope. You made Christian burial and praying for the dead a defining feature of the Church of Rome. May we honor you in death just as you honored so well your own forebearers in the faith.

September 16: Saint Cornelius, Pope, Martyrc. Late Second, or Early Third, Century–253Memorial; Liturgical Color: RedPatron Saint of cattle, domestic animals, and earache sufferersA Pope reigns for two years, excommunicates a schismatic, and dies in exileThe twenty-first pope of the Church, Saint Cornelius, succeeded no one. After the death of Pope Saint Fabian, martyred in January 250, persecutions prohibited the clergy of Rome from electing a successor, so the Chair of Saint Peter was vacant for over a year. Finally, when the cruel Emperor Decius departed Rome on military campaign, the clergy chose Cornelius as Bishop of Rome. Not everyone was happy with the choice, especially the former future pope Novatian, who had led the Roman clergy during the vacancy and had convinced himself that he was going to be elected. Novatian's supporters consecrated him bishop and refused to acknowledge Cornelius. Sides were taken, letters were written, and tensions heightened. After consolidating support from the esteemed Saint Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, and others, Cornelius resolved the dispute by convening a synod of bishops which excommunicated the schismatic Novatian and his followers.Pope Cornelius reigned for a little over two years, from March 251 to June 253. Even though his time in office was brief, he made some important decisions and left an interesting legacy. Decius' persecution gave rise to the greatest pastoral dilemma of the third century—how, and whether, to reintegrate Christians who had offered pagan sacrifice, regretted it, and desired to enter again into the embrace of Mother Church. The related question of whether bishops, priests, and deacons who had apostosized could perform valid sacraments would vex Cornelius's successors. There were two camps on this issue. Novatian held that lapsed Christians were idolaters, and idolatry was, in the Old Testament especially, unforgivable. The Church could not absolve such apostates. They were to be judged by God alone at death. Cornelius, Saint Cyprian, and other bishops occupied a more moderate position. They taught that the lapsi could be reintegrated into the Church through repentance and an appropriate penance. Cornelius' position won the day, forever and always, establishing an important theological precedent: There is no sin that cannot be forgiven.Pope Cornelius also left, in his letters, an important record of the size, state, and organization of the Church of Rome, hard facts so obvious to those inside of a culture that they often go unreported in historical documents. Decius' successor as Emperor was named Gallus, and he was no friend of Christians either. He banished Cornelius to a city not far from Rome where the Pope died of physical hardship. Saint Cornelius was buried near the papal crypt in the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus. One day in 1849, an amateur archeologist, a layman who worked in the Vatican library, found a small marble shard that read NELIUS MARTYR in a field on the outskirts of Rome. But there was no martyr named Nelius. He then found another shard that read COR. The inscription is still visible today in the Catacombs of Callixtus: Cornelius Martyr. The Romans unsheathed their long knives in the 250s. Pope after pope was martyred by various means. But the Church did not run and hide, it stayed and grew. The blood of Cornelius and other pope-martyrs wet the soil, and the seeds of faith moistened, grew, and sprouted into the vast garden of Catholicism that slowly, and imperceptibly, took deep root in the ground of Europe. Saint Cornelius' name is read at Mass in Eucharistic Prayer I even today, next to Saint Cyprian's. He was staunch in his defense of the Church, yet appropriately lenient to his fellow Christians who did not possess his same fortitude. In this respect, he was as wise a pastor as he was brave a martyr.Saint Cornelius, our Lord said that it profits a man nothing to gain the whole world if he would lose his own soul. You gained the papacy, not the whole world, yet gave it up rather than bend to the will of the Church's enemies. Help us to persevere like you.

Hey there guys, Welcome back to your favorite late night radio show Gem Mint Horror !Im your host Joel and on this show for those new Insomniacs tuning in we talk about lesser known horror films in order to find you guys a new favorite horror movie ! Ahhh Paris the city of love, what most people don't know is about the 186 mile catacombs that house a labyrinth of tunnels housing old bones from the transfer of bones from the parochial cemeteries of Paris. Now there are a bunch of creepy pastas and first hand encounters of things going bump in the night down in those tunnels. That is what happens in tonights episode on the controversial film in the horror community but I am here to convince you that this film is worth your time and that film is John Erick Dowdle's As Above so Below. This is a found footage film that was released in 2014 and I remember liking it when I first saw this movie and I know this film is talked about in the horror community but I have heard some bad things about it so it might discourage newbies to horror to look over it but I am here to tell you to watch it. This show is about lesser known horror films but as well as films that I deem need a second chance, almost like a film going back to the picture show haha. As Above so Below is When a team of explorers ventures into the catacombs that lie beneath the streets of Paris, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead. Now that is a pretty straight forward synopsis for this film and I like it because it tells you what its about and I think with that you can decide if you want to watch it. I will say currently this film is only rentable on streaming services like VUDU, Apple TV, Prime Video, and anywhere that offers digital rentals but it is worth the money to rent. I hope you guys love the episode and enjoy watching this film ! see you late night freaks next Friday night !Follow me :Instagram: @gem_mint_horrorTwitter: @GemHorror7Facebook Group: Gem Mint HorrorDiscord: https://discord.gg/dQ6vVkka5a

August 13: Saints Pontian, Pope; & Hippolytus, Priest: MartyrsLate Second Century–c. 235Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: RedPatron Saint of Montaldo Scarampi, Italy (Pontian) and prison guards (Hippolytus)An exiled Pope dies along with a learned priestToday's martyrs died on the island of Sardinia, perhaps from overwork in the mines or perhaps from starvation or neglect rather than execution. In a pacific interlude following the persecution which was their doom, a later pope, Fabian, returned their bodies to Rome for dignified burial. Pontian was interred in the papal crypt in the Catacombs of Callixtus near so many of his fellow popes of the 200s. In 1909 the original marble epitaph on Pontian's tomb was found among the shards littering the floor of the catacombs. It reads ΠONTIANOC ƐΠIC MPT (Pontian, Bishop, Martyr), although the abbreviation for “martyr” was engraved by a different hand. Tombstones are very economical. Hippolytus was buried in a Roman catacomb, subsequently named in his honor, which became a pilgrimage site. The links among today's martyrs are their common date of burial, August 13, and their place of death. Hippolytus is by far the more significant figure.Pope Saint Pontian was consecrated Bishop of Rome in 230. He is chiefly known for convening a Roman Synod which confirmed a prior condemnation of the Egyptian theologian Origen. Like so many other bishops of his era, Pontian also dealt with divergent positions over how the Church should re-integrate Christians who had abjured their faith during a persecution. Should they be re-baptized, do public penance, or be welcomed back privately? Tensions over this issue perdured for many decades and deeply wounded Church unity. During a persecution, Pontian was exiled, but first graciously resigned in 235 so that a successor pope could be elected. For this magnanimous act, he was remembered as “distinguished” in contemporary documents.Saint Hippolytus is an elusive figure. He was most likely from Rome. Some traditions, however, state he was from Lyon and was a disciple of Saint Irenaeus. Incredibly for a saint, Hippolytus is also traditionally labeled an anti-pope for resisting Pope Callixtus' lenient attitude in reintegrating into Church life the lapsi who had rendered homage to false gods. Hippolytus was later reconciled to the Church which he loved enough to disrupt. Besides being a controversialist, Hippolytus was the most impactful theologian in Rome before the legalization of Christianity. When the great theologian Origen came to Rome from Caesarea, he heard Hippolytus preach. Most of Hippolytus' works have been lost, but enough translated fragments of his original Greek writings survive to capture his importance. He wrote on Scripture, dogma, law, apologetics, Christ, and also authored a comprehensive polemical work entitled A Refutation of All Heresies.Hippolytus is most famous as the author of the Apostolic Tradition, which preserves some of the most ancient liturgical texts of the primitive church. The original of the Apostolic Tradition does not exist, and later translated fragments are of dubious provenance, making the work a fluid, composite text of different eras. Nevertheless, the core document is a one-of-a-kind artifact, allowing a modern Christian to peek through the keyhole into the liturgy of the early, praying Church. Hippolytus doesn't just describe the words and actions of the liturgy, as the earlier Didache and Saint Justin Martyr did. Instead, he writes down the actual prayers. The Apostolic Tradition contains the earliest known rite of ordination. The ordination rite of a bishop used today by the Catholic Church still largely adopts this ancient text. Hippolytus provides the first example of the Virgin Mary being invoked in liturgical prayer. And Hippolytus' prayers for the Eucharistic banquet include the third-century words of consecration! This text is the source for a significant portion of today's Eucharistic Prayer II, perhaps the most commonly used Eucharistic prayer at Mass. When the faithful throughout the world hear the familiar cadence of Eucharistic Prayer II each Sunday, they are hearing a distant echo—it's the sound of priestly voices from the third century. As he did on so many significant Roman tombs, Pope Damasus (366–384) wrote an inscription on the tomb of Hippolytus more than a century after the saint died. Part of it reads: “Wherever he was able to go, he had spoken of the Catholic faith so that all might follow it. Thus our martyr deserves to be acknowledged.” Indeed. And at the entrance of the forever-closed catacombs of Saint Hippolytus, a personalized graffiti from an ancient pilgrim is carved into the wall, a tender petition invoking today's saint: “Hippolytus, keep Peter the sinner in mind.” Saint Hippolytus, keep all of us in mind.Saints Hippolytus and Pontian, you lived at a difficult time and gave such public witness that you were exiled when many others were not. Your headship of the Church led to your demise. You were isolated, suffered want, and died as a result. May we count our own hardships little in light of yours.

OC Fire Rescue Florida performs rescues on theme park rides and other unique structures in Central Florida, including Sea World, Orlando Eye observation wheel (7th tallest in the world), the world's tallest Swing Ride, Drop Tower, and Sling Shot. They also work closely with other Fire Departments within Orange County that cover Universal Studios and Disney World. In this episode OC Fire Rescue explains the process of getting ready for GRIMP NA 2022 and the strategies they used to excel in the competition. Overheard in this episode: “In this event, we ascended every single scenario except the Catacombs, in which we didn't even use ropes.” “If you want to do GRIMP and want to be good at this, I think you have to take a bunch of different disciplines and cross-pollinate.” - Ryan Allen
