A vegan pie picked up the Supreme Champion gong at the British Pie Awards. The curried sweet potato and butternut squash pie was praised as "outstanding" and "well-balanced" by judges as it beat nearly 900 other entrants to win the prize. It is the first time in the event's 11-year history that a vegan pie has won the accolade – in a sign of the times, it's actually the first year the competition included a dedicated Vegan Pie Class which received the second most entries at 68 pies.The pie was submitted by a butcher, Jon Thorner in Somerset and Gary chats to John Emery, the man behind the curried sweet potato and butternut squash pie which has earned Jon Thorner's the greatest accolade in the PIE world. After 10 years of trying to start a family, along with the heartache of multiple miscarriages, failed IVF treatment attempts, Gary Muircroft and his wife Rachel adopted a vegan diet 24 months ago!
