Evidence-based nutrition doesn't always win the attention economy...but it's what leads to lasting health. In this episode of Muscles by Brussels Radio, Ben and Coach Sawyer sit down with Mic the Vegan to discuss his journey from skeptical omnivore to one of the most trusted science communicators in the vegan space. Mike shares how he built his platform by prioritizing research over sensationalism, the challenges of combating nutrition misinformation online, and why balanced, evidence-driven messaging matters more than ever. The conversation explores why people are drawn to nutrition trends, how social media rewards controversy over nuance, and the importance of interpreting scientific research correctly instead of relying on isolated mechanisms or clickbait headlines. They also dive into common misconceptions surrounding cholesterol, saturated fat, whole foods, superfoods, and vegan diets, while discussing how genetics, lifestyle, and overall dietary patterns all contribute to long-term health.Along the way, the group discusses athletic performance on a vegan diet, practical strategies for building sustainable eating habits, why enjoyable movement matters, and how everyday vegans can become positive ambassadors for the lifestyle. Whether you're interested in improving your health, understanding nutrition research, or simply becoming a more informed consumer of health information online, this episode is packed with thoughtful discussion and practical takeaways.

Because no matter what dietary path you choose, whether it is fully raw, high raw, whole-food vegan, or simply a more plant-rich way of living, one thing is often overlooked: community matters. The people around us, the support we receive, and the examples we can lean on often make the difference between a short-term attempt and a lifestyle that actually feels sustainable. Chris and I speak about how to look at diet through the lens of nourishment rather than restriction. Is your diet giving you what you need? Is it energising you? Is it supporting your digestion, your mood, your movement, your joy? And where do supplements fit into that conversation — are they necessary, are they a “no-no,” or is the answer more nuanced? We also unpack some of the common misconceptions around the 80/10/10 diet, Dr Douglas Graham's work, and the idea that raw vegan or fruit-based eating is extreme, impossible, or lacking. We talk about what people often misunderstand, what needs to be done properly, and why education and support are so important. Most of all, this episode is about inspiration. It is not about telling everyone they must be fully raw. It is not about dietary perfection. It is about inviting more plants onto the plate, building confidence with vegan food, and helping people feel excited rather than overwhelmed by the possibility of eating in a way that is more aligned with health, compassion and vitality. So whether you are fully raw, high raw, vegan, plant-curious, or simply looking for more colour, freshness and life in your meals, this conversation with Chris Kendall will give you plenty to think about — and hopefully, plenty of encouragement to keep building your own supportive, nourishing plant-based path. Why should be care about bees? Why should we avoid honey and beeswax? Vegans want to eliminate as much harm, exploitation, and killing as possible. When animals are farmed for profit, there is always compromise of their wellbeing, and bees farmed for their honey and beeswax are no exception. Ethical veganism is about getting justice over the species barrier, and in this case it's concern for the amazing, beautiful bee.In this short episode, our host Hope Bohanec offers her knowledge about honey bees. We learn about their fascinating and complex lives, details of honey farming practices, and the truth about how our interference and manipulation of bees is hurting them and the entire planet.

The series completes itself with a look at the grandaddy of them all, Shaun Monson's 'Earthlings'. Although food has been the main focus of the series, this documentary also looks at the use of animals as pets (even that isn't always pretty), for clothes, for entertainment and finally for scientific experiments. Shaun's 2015 sequel 'Unity' is in the show notes below.   Antony also mentions a couple of Australian documentaries that are even harder to watch than 'Earthlings' (if that's even possible), and offers some final statements and some attempt at a conclusion.   General series notes We all know it's happening. We all know it's horrific but try to tell ourselves it's not that bad and if we just buy free-range eggs we can square it with our conscience and sleep peacefully. However, research and just a small sample of the copious amounts of truly heartbreaking video footage available makes it clear that it is far, far worse than we think (note- the information in this podcast series is actually quite sanitised compared to other testimonies and footage out there).   Who is to blame? The consumer or the industry? It seems to be a chicken-and-egg situation that could be improved greatly by the average consumer deciding to invest time in discovering what is behind some of the shameful (and shameless) propaganda techniques employed by the food industry. As should be clear in the series, the animals are the biggest victims but not the only ones, which is obvious when you research the state of meat, eggs and dairy that is routinely passed as 'safe to consume'.   To gain a better industry of how and why this nasty business is allowed to happen, a recommended companion piece is the excellent documentary 'The Corporation' and indeed the previous LALO episode on it (see show notes for both). We really owe it to ourselves and the animals who largely live miserable, hellish lives before suffering painful and brutal deaths, to make the effort in the ultimate information age to inform ourselves of the real situation. Unfettered capitalism cannot be allowed to run riot without resistance.   Do I recommend watching the documentaries and other video footage available? I'm going to say yes but please proceed with caution and I would actively discourage viewing them if you feel in a vulnerable or depressive state because they have the power to make you question whether true humanity exists and how we can possibly behave in this kind of way to innocent, defenceless beings (once again, I would also include some humans in this).   As the saying goes, 'once you've seen it, you can't unsee it', and as Ed Winters aka Earthling Ed says at the end of 'Land of Hope And Glory', 'you can never again say you didn't know'. While listening, consider/research the following; normalisation, desensitisation, disassociation, cultural reinforcement, cognitive dissonance, confirmation bias, power(lessness), exploitation, deception, isolation, (relative) value of life, respect, compassion, sympathy, mercy, humanity.   We hope you find this of interest Thanks for listening! What would it look like to build your own Personal Curriculum around veganism, animal advocacy, and our relationships with other animals? This week, Michele introduces a summer reading series centered around her Personal Curriculum for the summer of 2026 and invites the listeners to join her.Shared references can help us have better conversations — more precise, more thoughtful, and more useful — especially in a world where we are often working from different facts, different frameworks, and different emotional starting points.Documentaries like Cowspiracy, Earthlings, The Game Changers, and Dominion have helped bring countless people into the vegan and plant-based conversation. But books offer something different: the chance to slow down, build an argument, question assumptions, take notes, push back, and develop a more durable intellectual framework.Deep reading can help us become harder to fool, better able to name what we are seeing, and more equipped to understand the language used around food, animals, “humane” labels, sustainability, health, and ethics.  Maybe reading is an important form of activism. What books have shaped YOUR thinking? What belongs in a shared set of references for vegan and animal advocacy conversations? What perspectives are missing from the usual lists? What have you read recently that challenged you, changed you, frustrated you, or helped you think more clearly?Books Michele is considering for her personal curriculum:Animal Liberation by Peter SingerWhy We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows by Melanie JoyEating Animals by Jonathan Safran FoerThe Sexual Politics of Meat by Carol J. Can a heavy metal musician help transform global food systems? In this inspiring conversation, Darin sits down with internationally acclaimed bassist Tanya O'Callaghan to explore the unlikely intersection of rock and roll, activism, compassion, and human connection. Best known for touring with artists including Whitesnake, Bruce Dickinson, Dee Snider, and Steven Adler, Tanya reveals that long before she ever picked up a bass guitar, she was fighting for animal rights and questioning the systems that shape our world. Together they discuss how curiosity breaks down cultural barriers, why meaningful change begins with conversations instead of confrontation, and how leading by example can inspire transformation in the most unexpected places—from helping a Vietnam veteran reclaim his health through plant-forward eating to partnering with Maasai communities in Kenya to improve access to clean water and sustainable agriculture. This episode is ultimately about integrity: living in alignment with your values, remaining open to learning from others, and remembering that changing your plate can become one of the simplest ways to change the world. What You'll Learn How Tanya built a career touring with legendary rock musicians Why activism became her life's purpose before music The childhood experience that led her to become vegan How curiosity creates connection across vastly different cultures Why compassion is more effective than confrontation Tanya's work with Maasai communities in Kenya The importance of sustainable agriculture and clean water The inspiring story of Bob, a Vietnam veteran whose life changed through friendship and food Why community begins with your neighbors How travel expands empathy and challenges assumptions Why whole-food, plant-forward eating benefits people, animals, and the planet How living with integrity creates ripple effects far beyond yourself Chapters 00:00:00 – Welcome to SuperLife 00:00:35 – Sponsor: Alkemis Paint 00:03:26 – Introducing Tanya O'Callaghan 00:04:31 – Twenty years touring with rock legends 00:07:21 – Balancing music with lifelong activism 00:08:34 – Building a career by saying "yes" 00:10:47 – Growing up in rural Ireland 00:13:05 – Challenging the education system and questioning authority 00:15:28 – Why activism begins with curiosity 00:17:02 – Sponsor: Shakeology 00:18:48 – The childhood moment that changed Tanya's life forever 00:21:03 – Becoming a lifelong animal rights advocate 00:23:08 – Compassion, food systems, and cognitive dissonance 00:26:09 – Why kindness—not judgment—creates change 00:31:19 – Meeting a Maasai leader and building an unexpected friendship 00:34:15 – Bringing clean water and sustainable agriculture to Kenya 00:36:32 – Learning from indigenous wisdom and traditional food systems 00:40:20 – Why whole-food, plant-forward eating doesn't have to be complicated 00:43:48 – Open-mindedness as the foundation for meaningful collaboration 00:47:08 – Why curiosity matters more than being right 00:50:11 – Bob: the Vietnam veteran who became family 00:53:24 – Showing up for your neighbors during unimaginable tragedy 00:57:10 – Food as a bridge for healing and friendship 01:00:10 – Community begins with ordinary acts of kindness 01:03:08 – Why labels divide and stories unite 01:05:15 – Living in alignment with your values 01:08:08 – The courage to question systems 01:10:48 – Finding purpose through resistance 01:11:45 – Staying true to the little girl who never stopped fighting 01:13:15 – Final reflections: changing plates can change the world Thank You to Our Sponsors Shakeology: Get 15% off with code DARINO1BODI at Shakeology.com. Whether you're connecting with a neighbor, collaborating with indigenous communities halfway across the world, or simply making more conscious choices about the food on your plate, kindness and curiosity create possibilities that judgment never can. Living with integrity doesn't require perfection; it requires consistently aligning your actions with your values. When enough people make those small daily choices, changing your plate truly can help change the world."

Brian introduces Zen Honeycutt, founder of Moms Across America, which grew from efforts to label GMOs into a national nonprofit focused on reducing pesticide and toxin exposure through education and extensive testing that has found glyphosate in items including tap water, urine, breast milk, foods, and other products. Honeycutt describes launching a legislative arm (Moms Across America Movement/"Yes Ma'am") to promote health-focused policy, discusses MAHA-era progress and perceived corporate pushback, and urges contacting representatives via calls, email, visits, and X. She shares outcomes from switching to organic, including a story of a child's mental health improving, and recounts her son's strict organic veganism, subsequent nutrient/toxin findings (including thallium, mycotoxins, DDT), and suicide, informing proposed newborn genetic disclosure and EPA reforms. The conversation also covers EMFs, vaccine safety, microplastics, and major concerns about data centers' noise, energy, and water impacts.   Show Notes: 01:16 Meet Zen Honeycutt 02:46 Austin Events and Community 04:55 Moms Across America Origin 06:53 Testing Glyphosate Everywhere 08:26 MAHA Movement and RFK Jr 12:49 Policy Slowdown and Pushback 15:13 What You Can Do Now 19:46 Organic Food Changes Everything 22:06 Organic and Mental Health Story 26:42 Ben's Story and Vegan Risks 31:57 Genes Toxins and New Bills 38:22 Fat Fuels Survival 38:45 Cholesterol and Brain Health 39:16 Food Lies and Plant Toxins 41:39 Why Carnivore Helps Some 42:24 Fermentation and Gut Issues 45:08 Vegan as Reset Not Nutrition 51:32 Africa Anecdotes on Meat 53:39 Glyphosate and Vegan Exposure 55:32 Moms Across America Issues 56:41 Data Centers Health Threat 01:04:00 Microplastics and Fertility 01:05:36 Self Regulation and Identity 01:09:05 Unstoppable Take Action   GET OYSTER PILLS http://NosetoTail.org FREE SAPIEN FOOD GUIDE http://sapien.org Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg

Continuing with this most upsetting but vitally important topic, Antony completes his look at 'Land of Hope And Glory', discusses the big myth about tradition and change and then switches to a new documentary called 'The Dying Trade'.   This film was made by Jack Hancock, who gives the issue a new spin by exploring his relationship with his father, who just happens to be a man-and-boy slaughterhouse worker (Antony avoids euphemistic words like 'abattoir' throughout this series). Along the way, Jack meets a Holocaust survivor and such legends as Temple Grandin and Gail Eisnitz.   As Upton Sinclair famously said, 'it's difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on him not understanding it'.    This second part ends with testimonies from some rather brave slaughterhouse workers, who are largely victims themselves working in a stressful and terrifying environment which is, as Shaun Monson puts it, 'both a kitchen and a toilet'. This week on Vedge Your Best podcast, we revisit the Save Our Bacon Act and the 2026 US Farm Bill, and ask what backlash against veganism, animal welfare, and plant-based change actually mean?  There's still time to communicate with the Senate here.It can feel discouraging when vegan, plant-based, and animal advocates are trolled online or dismissed as extreme. But what if some of that backlash is also a sign that compassionate food movements are becoming visible enough to challenge powerful systems? We explore how social change happens, why we may not need everyone to agree all at once, and what we can learn from research on active participation, coalition-building, and visible support. Drawing on Erica Chenoweth's work on nonviolent movements and the “3.5% idea,” we see why visibility matters, why purity debates can shrink movements, and how widening the on-ramp can help more people take meaningful action. You'll hear about:• How visible participation helps others feel less alone• Why backlash can be a signal that a movement is being noticed• What vegan and animal advocacy can learn from the anti-smoking movement• Why coalitions matter, even when people do not agree on every tactic• How schools, restaurants, hospitals, and laws can build better “infrastructure” for compassionate choices• Why imperfect participation can still move us forward• Practical ways to show up more visibly without burning outMaybe we don't need everyone to do everything. We need more people doing something, more visibly, together, over time.Subscribe & Review:If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review on your favorite podcast platform. Episode 68- Animals For Food: A Horror Story (Part 1 of 3)

    Life And Life Only

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 1, 2026 69:20

This is the first part of a series on a topic which could be the most important and urgent ever covered on this podcast. There's no doubt that the research, including lots of video footage, has been the most upsetting and harrowing, but there has been a strangely cathartic quality to it as well.   In this part, Antony talks about his relationship with animals, the video that was the final trigger (or final straw) for these episodes, and then begins to go through the content of the film 'Land of Hope and Glory'. This documentary is known as a UK version of the well-known animal rights/use & abuse film 'Earthlings', which will be covered later in the series. By 2020, veganism wasn't a fringe choice. It was mainstream. A few years later, the momentum faded. So what happened? I sit down with nutrition scientist Simon Hill for an honest autopsy – the overhyped meat alternatives, the broken trust around health claims, the sanctimony that turned people off, and how eating plants got tangled up with politics and masculinity. I cop to my own part in it too. No dogma. No purity tests. Just a reckoning, and a saner way forward. Enjoy.
