Tapping into fandom with animal protection and vegan messages, The Protego Foundation accesses sci-fi, fantasy, and other other devoted fan communities to advocate for animals. Our guest is Brittany Drake, campaigns director for The Protego Foundation. Brittany talks about the foundation's creative campaigns such as getting vegan butter beer offered at the Harry Potter theme parks, a Game of Thrones inspired campaign encouraging vendors at fan conventions not to use wild animals as props for photos, and their latest campaign around the release of the movie sequel, Wicked For Good. Brittany and Hope go on to talk about the animal rights and vegan themes in numerous movies and televisions entertainment, unpacking the animal personhood vision of Wicked, the strong animal characters in The Wizard of Oz, disturbing animal eating parallels in Stargate Atlantis, and vegetarianism in Avatar: The Last Airbender. They also talk about how the use of fictional creatures and characters can garner an audience's imagination and empathy for animals.Brittany Drake is the campaigns director for The Protego Foundation. She has helped with countless campaigns and seen several achieve success including Starbucks' dropping of the vegan upcharge for nondairy milks, Harvard and UMass closing their monkey labs, and Farmer John closing their Los Angeles slaughterhouse. In addition to her campaign work, she has rescued farmed animals and been arrested for civil disobedience on multiple occasions.Resources:The Protego FoundationThe Protego Foundation Mailing List(related) Hope for the Animals Podcast, episode 127: From Teddy Bears to Talking Fish: Children's Media and Animal Personhood with Cogen and Hope Bohanec Recommended Movies: Wicked and Wicked For GoodRemarkably Bright CreaturesChimp CrazyOkja Support this podcast:Hope for the Animals PodcastCompassionate LivingSocial Media:FacebookInstagramYouTube

Finding vegan food while traveling has come a long way over the past decade, but it can still sometimes be difficult to find the places that are worth visiting.  In this episode, I'm joined by Audrey-Josephine Addo, founder of Lost & Vegan, a platform designed to help people discover vegan restaurants and plant-based dining options while exploring new cities. AJ shares her vegan story, including the health challenges that led her to adopt a plant-based lifestyle eight years ago. We discuss how her background in computer science and graphic design inspired her to create Lost & Vegan, the gaps she noticed in existing restaurant-finding tools, and how she set out to build a resource specifically for the vegan community. We also talk about the evolution of vegan travel, the importance of representation and community, and what inspired AJ to expand Lost & Vegan beyond an app and into a magazine.  Whether you're a frequent traveler, someone who enjoys exploring new vegan restaurants, or simply interested in the people building innovative tools for the vegan community, this episode is packed with insights and inspiration. In this episode, we discuss: • AJ's vegan journey and health transformation • The inspiration behind Lost & Vegan • Challenges vegans face when travelling • How Lost & Vegan differs from other restaurant-finding platforms • Building a tech platform for the vegan community • The launch of the Lost & Vegan magazine • Vegan culture, trends, and travel • The future of plant-based dining and discovery Connect with AJ and Lost & Vegan on her website lostandvegan.com and Instagram @lostandvegan.  ____________________________________________________________________ Work With Me: If you're ready to go plant-based or already are and want to feel more confident about your nutrition, I offer private consultations with personalized, evidence-based guidance. Trumped Up Tomatoes Cost 40% More Tomatoes are about to get a lot more expensive, and most Americans have no idea why. This week, I retreat to the kitchen to make a comforting vegan tomato soup, but even there, politics has a way of finding us. The biggest inflation story in food right now isn't beef, eggs, or milk—it's tomatoes. Prices are rising fast, and policy decisions could make them climb even higher. So while we chop, stir, blend, and cook, we'll also talk about the real-world impact of politics on your grocery bill, along with the latest headlines from entertainment, current events, and the never-ending news cycle. Sometimes the best way to survive a chaotic week is with a warm bowl of soup and an honest conversation.

Before the Target collabs, before the McCormick's deal, before millions of people called her their favorite auntie on the internet,Tabitha Brown was sitting in the dark, convinced she was dying. In one of the most honest conversations Happy With Tammi Mac has ever produced, host Tammi Mac creates a sacred space for Tabitha Brown to go all the way back. Back to 2016 and 2017, when she spent over a year battling a mysterious autoimmune illness that left doctors baffled and left Tabitha terrified. With a headache that lasted one year and seven months, vision loss, chronic pain, and failing strength in her hands, Tabitha's mind went to the place she feared most, her mother. Her mother, who died of ALS at just 51. Her mother, who was told by doctors that it was all in her head for 11 months, before being given six months to two years to live. Tabitha saw the mirror. And she prepared herself for the end. What saved her wasn't another doctor's appointment. It was a documentary. A conversation with her daughter. A decision to go vegan for 30 days. And on Day 10, the headache that had been her constant companion for nearly two years was gone. This episode moves through all three segments of Happy With Tammi Mac: The Dark Journey, Tabitha's health crisis and grief; The Turning Point, the plant-based decision that changed her biology and her destiny; and Finding Happy, what it means to look back at the viral car video that launched everything and choose gratitude over forgetting. Tammi Mac also shares her own story, the pandemic depression that inspired this entire podcast, reminding us that sometimes the most honest thing you can say is "I did this for me." This episode is for anyone who has been dismissed by a doctor. For anyone who has watched someone they love die too young. For anyone who has sat in the silence of a body that won't cooperate and a mind that has started saying goodbye. And for anyone who needs proof that a turning point is still possible. Happiness has been a hard word to come by, but it will exist again.

Nigeria has the rare political scandal that would make a fun Disney movie where a candidate turned out to be a literal child. An immature congressman? Can't have that. Then, we get into the Texas campaign for the U.S. Senate and the tens of millions of dollars worth of mud about to be slung at James Talarico, which so far amounts to “It's communist to eat meat veganly” and “He has a girlfriend, but queerly.” Trae has an actual job at an office for one week, so Mark is joined by Drew Morgan this week. You don't have to look much further than your grocery receipt to see how climate change can affect our food supply chain. But some of the key drivers of climate change are sitting right in our carts. It's a chicken-or-egg debacle that we're happy to explore on this episode if it means understanding how we can create a more adaptable, equitable food supply chain.  Farms are dealing with historic heat waves slashing wheat and maize yields, record rainfall collapsing corn harvests, sea level rise swallowing farmland on the East Coast, and disappearing pollinators that one-third of our food supply depends on. And we're paying the price. We hear from our community about how the rising price of groceries has meant making sustainability tradeoffs on what they buy at the store. Food insecurity and the climate crisis are also intertwined. Maggie Baird, founder of Support and Feed, helps us understand how the animal agriculture industry is at the center of many climate (and health woes), challenging us to rethink food traditions rooted in culture and family identity. To better understand how we got here,  Commons founder Sanchali Seth Pal follows the money through animal agriculture subsidies.   Episode rundown: (00:54) - How our food choices and the climate crisis feed each other (02:30) - How climate change is affecting food prices (04:41) - When sustainable food becomes a luxury you can't afford (09:07) - Animal agriculture, culinary tradition, and food inequity with Maggie Baird (27:49) - Our tax dollars are making meat cheaper? (33:59) - Changing what we eat can change the climate

Are ultra-processed foods really as unhealthy as we've been told? New research suggests the answer may be more complicated than the headlines make it seem. Dr. Neal Barnard joins Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast to break down findings showing that much of the health risk linked to ultra-processed foods may be driven by two specific categories: processed meat and sugar-sweetened beverages. That means foods like bacon, sausage, ham, bologna, pepperoni, hot dogs, and soda may be doing much of the heavy lifting when it comes to increased disease risk. But what about breakfast cereal? Plant-based burgers? Vegan snacks? Olive oil? Cheese? Steak? And what about studies linking ultra-processed foods to cognitive decline and dementia risk? Dr. Barnard helps separate nutrition fact from fiction and explains what really matters when you're reading a food label.
