Getting 50 grams of protein per meal may be the single most underrated biohacking protein strategy for muscle growth, metabolism, and longevity. In this episode, you'll discover why animal protein vs vegan is not a fair match biologically, how hitting the leucine threshold activates mTOR for longevity, and why muscle is the most overlooked organ of aging. This is must-listen content for anyone optimizing human performance, hacking metabolism, or reversing muscle loss with food. Host Dave Asprey is joined by Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, a pioneer in Muscle-Centric Medicine®, functional medicine expert, and top authority on clinical nutrition for longevity. Trained by protein researcher Dr. Donald Layman, she brings decades of expertise on how to use high-protein diets, amino acid science, and functional medicine to radically improve healthspan and brain optimization. Dr. Lyon works with everyone from special operators to aging patients, making her one of the most trusted voices in anti-aging diet strategies. Watch this channel on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR You'll learn: • Why 50g of protein per meal matters more than total daily intake • How mTOR and longevity are misunderstood in mainstream nutrition • Why protein vs plant protein debates ignore hard biological data • How leucine thresholds determine muscle activation • Why fasting and protein cycling beats low-protein veganism • How ketosis and protein intake impact metabolic health • Why many on a vegan diet experience sleep issues, hormone crashes, and reduced resilience • How functional medicine podcasts like this one reveal the truth about aging and muscle loss • What happens clinically when patients switch to a high-protein diet • How to use supplements, nootropics, and protein hacks to enhance neuroplasticity, mitochondrial energy, and total body performance If you've ever asked “what's the best protein for muscle growth?” or “how does protein affect metabolism in aging?”, this episode gives you evidence-based answers from the front lines of clinical nutrition. This channel is a must-listen for anyone serious about hacking their biology, upgrading cognitive performance, and using unconventional tools to create lasting transformation. Whether you're tracking HRV, optimizing for deep sleep, or working toward metabolic resilience, these conversations deliver insights you won't hear anywhere else. Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. With over 1,000 interviews and 1 million monthly listeners, The Human Upgrade is the top podcast for people who want to take control of their biology, extend their longevity, and optimize every system in the body and mind. Each episode features cutting-edge insights in health, performance, neuroscience, supplements, nutrition, hacking, emotional intelligence, and conscious living. Episodes are released every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday where Dave asks the questions no one else dares, and brings you real tools to become more resilient, aware, and high performing. Omega-3 fatty acids have long been lauded for heart health benefits. Yet, emerging research now points to an even more profound impact, directly on our most complex organ: the brain. Today, we delve into the critical, often misunderstood, role of omega-3s in cognitive function, mental well-being, and even the prevention of neurodegenerative conditions like dementia. We are joined by Dr. Bill Harris, a globally recognised authority in omega-3 fatty acid research. Bill is a Professor at the University of South Dakota and has over 300 peer-reviewed publications. His foundational work includes pioneering studies on fish oil in the 1980s and shaping American Heart Association scientific statements. In this episode, Dr. Harris - along with ZOE's Chief Scientist Professor Sarah Berry - illuminate why most individuals may be operating with suboptimal omega-3 levels, and the tangible implications this has for mood regulation, anxiety, and long-term brain resilience. We navigate nuances between omega-3 types like EPA and DHA, debunk common misconceptions surrounding plant-based sources and mercury content in fish, and explore the precise methods for assessing and improving your own "Omega-3 Index." Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has officially published new draft regulations that would restrict how plant-based meat alternatives are labelled in South Africa. Under these new rules, products like vegan sausages, mushroom biltong, or plant-based chicken nuggets would no longer be allowed to use traditional meat-related terms on their packaging. The regulations target “meat analogue products” – foods designed to mimic the appearance, flavour, and texture of real meat – and aim to ensure clearer labelling for consumers. The law is set to take effect in a year’s time. ● Products can still be called things like "soya sausage" or "veggie burger," but terms like “chicken style” or “bacon style” using altered spellings or mimicking meat terms will be restricted unless clearly labeled as plant-based. ● A minimum protein requirement (9%) has been introduced for products marketed as meat alternatives, ensuring a nutritional baseline for those substituting meat. ● The plant-based industry continues to grow, with major retailers and fast-food chains across South Africa offering vegan Hang out with Anele and The Club on 947 every weekday morning. In this solo episode of Vegan Boss Radio, I dive into the narratives of ex-vegans who've become outspoken anti-vegans. While I won't name names, I break down some of the common claims they're making, why the science doesn't support them, and how misinformation about plant-based diets continues to spread online. We'll look at: The recurring myths about plant based nutrition Why their symptoms likely weren't caused by a balanced vegan diet How extreme or overly restrictive versions of veganism often lead to burnout I wrap up with an important reminder: if you're unsure whether you're meeting your nutrient needs, or you're dealing with any lingering health issues, it's essential to work with a qualified plant-based health professional. Don't let misinformation derail your progress.

A third of greenhouse gas emissions come from the food industry, largely from meat, dairy and eggs. The international Plant Based Treaty aims to combat this by advocating for a vegan diet as a key solution to climate change. Backed by cities, universities, Nobel laureates and thousands of individuals, it seeks to align global efforts with the Paris Agreement. This is a story from the archives. This originally aired on November 29, 2024. None of the dates, titles, or other references from that time have been changed. When most people think about saving the planet, they picture cutting back on meat and eating more plants. But what if the story we've been told about how plant-based diets equate to sustainability is missing half the truth (and hiding a massive environmental cost)? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I pull back the curtain on the industrial food system most people never see.  From the 90 billion honeybees trucked across the country each spring to pollinate almond trees to the 7.3 billion wild animals killed each year by harvest machinery, the data tells a very different story than the slogans. This isn't about pitting vegans against meat-eaters. It's about showing how industrial monoculture destroys soil, collapses insect populations, drains water tables, and kills countless small mammals and pollinators in the name of “clean” eating.  If you're ready to rethink food systems from the soil up, this episode is for you.
