Achieving the Congruence of Mission, Organizational Effectiveness and Student Engagement
Prof. Ford’s presentation will focus on three aspects: 1) the latest encyclical of Pope Benedict XIV "Caritas in Veritate"and its place in a long line of church statements on economic issues going back to Rerum Novarum [Leo XIII, 1891]; 2) how certain statements mirror structural change in economic systems [Quadragesimo Anno, 1931; Economic Justice For All, 1986; Caritas in Veritate, 2009]; and 3) criticism of these documents.
Based on her experience as a theology professor at a Catholic liberal arts college and a trustee of a Catholic high school, Dr. Brinkmann will examine why even many Catholics are hesitant to claim the Catholic identity of educational institutions in or on behalf of which they work. She will suggest that the Catholic intellectual tradition can provide resources for addressing this reluctance.
