Mitchell Warren, AVAC's Executive Director, joins Ben to scope out a forward-looking infectious disease prevention strategy. It is urgently needed, amidst political and economic turmoil caused by the dismantling of US aid and declines in funding from European donors. With HIV as the poster child of what once was global health solidarity, it is an opportunity for a resurgent and resilient Global South to take the reins and set priorities in how to deploy new biomedical innovations, and protecting the rights of communities affected by HIV and other pandemics. Ben and Mitchell also delve into the various legal actions the public health community is taking against the current US administration's executive orders, asking the question - how to we prep for prevention at home and internationally? 00:00 Introduction and Current Challenges in Global Health 01:09 Welcoming Mitchell Warren and AVAC's Mission 01:43 The Evolution of HIV Prevention and AVAC's Role 03:17 Current Frustrations and Challenges in HIV Prevention 05:15 The Promise and Challenges of Lenacapavir 08:03 The Importance of Choice in HIV Prevention 10:22 Navigating Funding and Policy Obstacles 12:43 The Role of Donors and Ministries in HIV Prevention 14:56 The Urgency of Lenacapavir Approval and Implementation 20:52 Sustainability and Future Planning in Global Health 25:44 Legal Battle Against Government Orders 26:50 Temporary Restraining Order and Its Implications 27:14 Government's Slow Compliance and Ongoing Legal Struggles 28:38 Public Record and Whistleblower Revelations 30:56 Impact on American Influence and Global Health 33:45 Diplomacy and Foreign Assistance 35:04 Consequences of Policy Changes 40:01 Future Strategies and Targets for Global Health 45:51 Music and Reflections on Democracy 48:21 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Learn more about AVAC https://avac.org

On this episode of the Customer's First Podcast, I am joined by Liz Weber, a distinguished business advisor, author, and organizational culture expert, to delve into the intricacies of leadership and company culture in today's fast-paced environment. Liz, with her vast experience and MBA in international business, shares her journey from a rewarding career with the State Department to becoming a trusted consultant for executives navigating the complexities of managing people and processes. As we explore the pressing challenges facing leaders today, Liz highlights the overwhelming nature of constant change, particularly since the pandemic. In her experience, identifying priorities has become paramount, as many leaders often find themselves mired in micromanagement rather than effectively delegating tasks to their teams. We discuss how critical it is for leadership to step back and empower their subordinates to take ownership of their roles, which fosters a more engaged and proactive workforce. Liz provides keen insights into the resistance leaders often exhibit, especially regarding trust and delegation. She explains her approach to helping leaders recognize that their hesitance to empower others can stifle development and lead to a disengaged culture. Through training and one-on-one coaching, Liz assists leaders in redistributing responsibilities, ultimately transforming their organization into a more balanced and efficient entity. We also delve into the critical role of corporate culture and its direct impact on employee satisfaction. Liz challenges listeners to consider how their teams feel about coming to work on Monday mornings, pointing out that a disengaged workforce reflects poorly on customer experiences. Through simple yet profound questions, Liz encourages leaders to confront hard truths about employee morale and actively create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Through Liz's expertise and genuine passion for leadership development, this episode aims to inspire leaders to cultivate a culture that prioritizes not just the customer experience but also the well-being and engagement of their employees, fostering a cycle of positivity and productivity that resonates throughout the organization. In this podcast episode, Dennis, Stacy Shackelford, and Doc Rush discuss the critical topic of triage in emergency medical situations, particularly in military contexts. They explore the current challenges in triage practices, emphasizing the need for a shift in thinking towards large-scale events and the importance of adapting strategies based on the number of casualties. The conversation highlights the significance of immediate actions in the first hour post-injury and the necessity of training medics to handle chaotic situations effectively. The episode concludes with a call for a more standardized approach to triage that prioritizes population health over individual patient categorization. This conversation delves into the complexities of tactical medicine in combat situations, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing tactics over medicine, the necessity of clinical experience for medics, and the psychological challenges faced in high-stress environments. The discussion also covers the decision-making process in evacuation scenarios, the identification of surgical needs, and the training required for mass casualty incidents. The speakers advocate for a simplified approach to triage and the need for ongoing training to prepare medics for the realities of their roles. Takeaways Triage practices need to evolve with changing conflict scenarios. Current triage systems are not standardized and often ineffective. Immediate actions in the first hour post-injury are crucial. Training should focus on large-scale event responses, not just individual cases. The first pass actions should prioritize stopping bleeding and ensuring airway clearance. Medics should be prepared for chaotic situations and make quick decisions. Understanding the scale of an event is essential for effective triage. The concept of treating the population rather than individuals is vital. Preparation and rehearsal are key to effective triage in emergencies. Triage decisions should be offloaded to allow for rapid response. Tactics often take precedence over medical interventions in combat. Medics should have regular clinical rotations to enhance their skills. Risk management in evacuation decisions is crucial for team leaders. Psychological preparation is essential for medics facing trauma. Identifying surgical needs should focus on unstable patients. Basic principles of triage should guide decision-making in emergencies. Training for mass casualty scenarios is vital for operational readiness. Medics must be prepared for the reality of not saving every patient. Experience and pattern recognition are key to effective triage. Simplicity in approach can lead to better outcomes in chaotic situations. Hear from Pedro Morales, the Director and Global Head of AML/Sanctions Compliance at Google, about AI, cyber threats, fraud, third-party risk, regulation and other complex operational resilience obstacles, trends and risks. The Federal Reserve defines operational resilience as the ability to deliver operations, including critical operations and core business lines, through a disruption from any hazard. In an interconnected world rife with volatility and uncertainty, there are certainly a plethora of hazards that can disrupt a business, and managing operational resilience is therefore a daunting task. At financial institutions, the operational resilience umbrella covers everything from AI, geopolitical threats and cyber risk to fraud, money laundering, IT outrages, third-party risk and disaster recovery. Indeed, on any given day, an operational resilience leader could have to contend with, for example, a cyberattack, an AI threat, a money-laundering scheme, or the fallout from a natural disaster or from wars in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Governance and regulatory obstacles, moreover, also come with the job. With so many different problems to contend with, there's not necessarily a one-size-fits-all approach for operational resilience. But a manager must stay on top of trends and be aware of all potential risks, while also following best practices – all as part of an effort to withstand, adapt and recover from disruptive events. *The views expressed by our guest speaker, Pedro Morales, are his alone and do not necessarily reflect those of his employer. While structured data elements such as patient identifier, medicine name and reaction, are fundamental for adverse event reporting, they may not capture all relevant details.
