Interviews from the 10th EONS conference in Dublin, Ireland.
Prof Krishnasamy talks to ecancertv at EONS 10 about how we can offer a better quality of life for patients with inoperable lung cancer. In particular, she highlights some cost-effective models of support such as being able to chat to a specialist cancer nurse on the phone for advice.
Prof Krishnasamy talks to ecancertv at EONS 10 about balancing healthcare needs, globally, in a changing context. She explains that whilst there have been amazing technological advances in cancer drugs, two thirds of the world don't currently have access to them. She also highlights the problem that even in countries where patients have access to state-of-the-art drugs, there are still issues when social determinants are not considered. This includes financial despair, alcoholism, smoking, anxiety, and depression — all of which effect a patient's prognosis, she says.
Elizabeth Meade talks to ecancertv at EONS 10 about her work looking at the survivorship needs of post-menopausal breast cancer patients. She explains how Ireland is behind the USA and some European countries in this regard and how they wish to change this, moving forward. The involvement of nurses in the standardisation of practice is important, she says, because they have a tendency to take a more holistic view of their patients than doctors sometimes do.
Dr Schneider talks to ecancertv at EONS 10 about the work and aims of the Oncology Nursing Society. Their work is extensive and includes capacity building, advocacy, and networking events, she says. They have also been involved in President Obama's 'Moonshot Initiative' to significantly improve cancer care and treatments in five years instead of ten.
President of EONS, Prof Kelly, talks to ecancertv at EONS 10 about the work of EONS, as well as their events. He gives an overview of EONS 10, with themes including cancer prevention, the needs of caregivers, and the needs of children who have a parent with cancer. He also highlights the work needed to improve cancer care in Eastern European countries.
Dr Jones talks to ecancertv at EONS 10 about the mechanism of action of palbociclib and similar drugs, and the side effects associated with them. Neutropaenia is the main side effect, she explains, but there are a few others.
