This Champaign city girl turned to the Sadorus countryside to raise her own son near the same farm that raised her up just a few decades ago. The flatlands and drying corn are a far cry from the lush tropics of where she spent her twenties—Maui, HI.   Listen as Ashley describes the preserved history that surrounded the once coveted town of Lahaina. Ashley and her now husband traveled to this area with nothing but wanderlust and a backpack. Ashley worked in a small schoolhouse teaching native islanders and soaking up smells and sunsets while making lifelong friends and memories. These friends are on the ground and communicating the hell firsthand. It's not just a vacation spot or a blip in their life's timeline. A piece of her, of them, is gone, forever lost, not unlike the hundreds of missing—many children—that are yet to be found amongst the indiscernible ash and ruin. Polluted water, looting and land grabbing are just a short list of the concerns the residents face. Inoperable fire hydrants, few and unsafe exits of evacuation and inaudible warnings only magnified the wildfire catastrophe. A U.S. gem was lost. Ashley encourages everyone to keep visiting Maui—keep talking about what happened. Ultimately, she doesn't want this event to be easily forgotten. Her final hope is that Lahaina is able to rebuild to its former glory rather than a commercialized version of what other islands have become.Thank you so much for listening! Episode #16: Inoperable Equipment & Airworthiness Directives

Audio Ground School by Part Time Pilot

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 14, 2022 50:40

Welcome to the Part Time Pilot Audio Ground School Podcast! This podcast is going to be all about providing student pilots with ANOTHER way that they can consume the Private Pilot curriculum.  The #1 reason student pilots never end up becoming a private pilot is NOT due to money. The real reason is actually deeper than that. Yes, flight training is expensive. But every student pilot knows this and budgets for it when they decide to do it. The actual #1 reason a student pilot fails is because they do not have a good, fundamental understanding of the private pilot knowledge they are meant to learn in ground school.  You see when a student does not have a good grasp of this knowledge they get to a point in their flight training where their mind just can't keep up. They start making mistakes and having to redo lessons. And THAT is when it starts getting too expensive.  This audio ground school is meant for the modern day student pilot... aka the part time student pilot. Let's face it, the majority of us have full time responsibilities on top of flight training. Whether it is a job, kids, family, school, etc. we all keep ourselves busy with the things that are important to us. And with today's economy we have to maintain that job just to pay for the training. The modern day student pilot is busy, on the go and always trying to find time throughout his or her day to stay up on their studies. The audio ground school allows them to consume high quality content while walking, running, working out, sitting in traffic, traveling, or even just a break from the boring FAR/AIM or ground school lecture.  Did I meant high quality content? The audio ground school is taken straight out of the 5-star rated Part Time Pilot Online Ground School that has had over 350 students take and pass their Private Pilot exams without a SINGLE STUDENT FAILING. We do this by keeping ground school engaging, fun, light and consumable. We have written lessons, videos, audio lessons, live video lessons, community chats, quizzes, practice tests, flash cards, study guides, eBooks and much more.  Part Time Pilot was created to be a breath of fresh air for student pilots. To be that flight training provider that looks out for them and their needs. So that is just what we are doing with this podcast.    Episode 16: In this lesson we talk about inoperable equipment and airworthiness directives. In Episode 15 we talked about required equipment, inspections and documents but what makes those documents valid and what happens if any of your equipment (required or not required) is inoperable? Then what? This episode covers those questions and closed the loop on keeping your aircraft airworthy. Which is something you will need to show on the day of your checkride.    Links mentioned in the episode: Online Ground School: https://parttimepilot.com/private-pilot-online-ground-school/?utm_source=podcast Free How to Become a Private Pilot course: https://parttimepilot.com/free-how-to-become-a-pilot/     Aviation Headsets Discount: Part Time Pilot Students & Listeners can now receive 10% off & Free Shipping on Kore Aviation Headsets using the coupon code 'parttimepilot': https://www.koreheadset.com/discount/parttimepilot

Ken is a very kind, friendly, talented man who I've had the pleasure of knowing for a number of years.  It wasn't until he shared his journey with us that I realized how much we had in common in regards to our diagnosis.  In December 2012 Ken was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor.  The tumor was wrapped around his veins, and lying against his aorta. Ken took good care of himself, ate right and was active. He was a power walker and one day on a walk with his wife Rebecca, he couldn't keep up with her. Rebecca insisted he go see his doctor. Tests were done and Ken was told he was a diabetic and started on insulin immediately. After starting insulin, Ken still felt lousy, so his wife made an appointment with an endocrinologist. Ken, shares his journey starting with his diagnosis of an inoperable pancreatic cancer tumor, his treatment with chemotherapy, the use of the new Cyber-Knife, his eight years "stable status" and a book he and his wife wrote together. Ken and Rebecca Parme wrote a book “In The Gaze of The Divine, Life with Pancreatic Cancer.” from the patient/survivor and caregiver point of view. Bailey O'Brien was kind enough to join us on our show to talk about her journey through stage 4 metastatic non operable melanoma (skin cancer). Her story is pretty incredible. She started out with some small growths that continued to get bigger when she was only 17 years old on her way to college. Skin cancer is the last thing somebody wants to concern themselves with when they've got their whole life ahead of them and they're on their way to college. We shared some ideas in this interview that I think you're going to get some benefit from. We talked about her lifestyle before she was diagnosed with skin cancer and some thoughts about what could have caused this illness to come into her life. On the physical level there were 3 main pieces that we all felt could have been the major biological triggers for her skin cancer. Then on the emotional spiritual level, there are always many more ideas to consider. As you'll hear in this conversation not only did it get very emotional but we also walked through her entire journey with her cancer that kept coming back, almost as if it were signaling or warning her that the work that she needed to do was not complete yet. She also shared some really great resources during the show of cancer clinics and treatments that she used to help her body get rid of the cancer. Remember we are not giving medical advice or saying people should not pursue conventional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation or surgery to heal from cancer. We cannot advocate such personal choices. All we can do here at extreme health radio is share ideas that might work and be options. The choice to pursue these ideas comes from you. Can you be entrapped by phone? The Supreme Court of Canada has confirmed that you can.One of the ways that entrapment can occur is if the police engage in random virtue testing: presenting an opportunity to commit a crime without a reasonable suspicion that the person being tested is already committing the crime, or that the crime is already occurring in the place where the police are testing random people. An example of a place where police have a reasonable suspicion that crimes are being committed might be an area where illegal drugs are being sold frequently. The Supreme Court of Canada concluded that a phone number, believed to be associated with illegal drug sales, could also constitute a place, like a street corner. While a tip on unknown reliability that a phone number is being used to sell drugs would not be enough to constitute reasonable suspicion, the language used when the phone is answered could provide the reasonable suspicion necessary to ask and see if the person answering the phone is willing to sell drugs. Also discussed is the US Posse Comitatus Act (1878), which is relevant to President Trump’s threat to use the US military to stop riots and looting which have accompanied peaceful protests over a police officer killing a black man by kneeling on his neck after he was handcuffed and laying on the ground. A Posse Comitatus, at common law, is a group of citizens mobilized by a sheriff to suppress lawlessness, defend the country, or apprehend someone who has committed a serious crime. The US Posse Comitatus Act restricted the use of the military to enforce domestic laws. Since it was passed, however, various amendments have been passed that permit exceptions to this limitation. In Canada, while we do not have a history of using the posse, we do have section 67 of the Criminal Code which required a justice, mayor, sheriff, deputy mayor, or deputy sheriff to, upon being informed of a riot of 12 or more people, to attend as close as is safe and, in a loud voice, read, or cause to be read, the following: "Her Majesty the Queen charges and commands all persons being assembled immediately to disperse and peaceably to depart to their habitations or to their lawful business on the pain of being guilty of an offence for which, on conviction, they may be sentenced to imprisonment for life. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN."Once this has been read, if people don’t disperse, they commit and offence and are liable to imprisonment for life. Finally, a Court of Appeal decision is discussed which concludes that you can be convicted for holding an electronic device while driving, even if the device is completely inoperable, or equipped with software that deactivates it in a car. The decision makes clear that the legislation in question needs to be amended so as to avoid punishing people who are not engaged in an activity that is dangerous. “Inoperable brain cancer”. These were the words spoken by the team of doctors who met with Andy and her family to share with her the devastating news of what was causing her extreme and sudden headaches. Andy Ptacek; wife, daughter, friend, and mother of two small boys would now be facing the greatest challenge any of us could ever imagine - defeating brain cancer. The Backstory: Andy and her husband were featured on the Money Peach Blog in the very early days when the blog was first started. They had an amazing success story of paying off $75k of debt in only 7 months (see link for show notes below). A year after paying down their debt, they would soon face an even greater challenge: an inoperable tumor found on the outside of Andy’s brain. The good news: After multiple attempts to have Andy to share her NEW success story, she finally gave in and agreed to the interview. She knew this would be a tough conversation and asked her husband Bruce to sit in with us during our conversation (you will notice him pop in the background of the interview). During our conversation, Andy shares her view on what really matters most in life when you stare into the eyes of what she perceived as her own mortality. • What did Andy promise herself when she was diagnosed? • How did she find the strength and motivation to stay positive through it all? • What happened that caused her to almost give up? • What did she do just 1 year after brain surgery? (This will absolutely shock you!)
Note: Many of you may be asking why I would interview Andy’s story of survival on the Money Peach Podcast. This is a fair enough question and you will understand why in the end. Hint: Money touches every aspect of your life. Even the parts you never think about...like inoperable brain cancer.
