The website for your law firm should be working for you 24/7 as a lead referral source. One of the best ways to optimize your site is through SEO. SEO has changed a lot since its inception over 20 years ago when Larry Page invented the idea of weighted rankings. It's no longer about trying to figure out how to fool PageRank, rather, it's about how well you treat your customers and create great content that ranks you higher in search queries. Your law firm’s website is the single most important facet of your marketing strategy. Your website should work as a referral source, and therein, needs to visually communicate who you are, what you do and why, and how you do it. It seems straightforward, yet, why is it so hard to get a quality website built on time and on budget? The answer is simple: because most websites are almost always built backwards. Instead, your website build needs to start with a content-driven approach that will inform design, not the other way around.Have a marketing question you want answered? In Episode 1 we talked about the two ways you can grow your law firm: lateral hires, and word of mouth. In this episode, we’ll discuss how to amplify the effect of your word of mouth through your marketing plan. To successfully grow your firm and referral rate, your word of mouth marketing plan needs to be long-term, and strategic. What does a long-term strategic plan look like? It’s at least a year-long commitment, with three main goals you should be aiming for: building your audience, capturing and following up on referrals and prospects, and staying top-of-mind. There are only two ways to effectively grow your law firm, and only one of them create value to the partners:Lateral hires: recruiting partners from other firmsWord of Mouth MarketingData shows that lateral hires are a difficult long-term strategy for growing your firm. 83% of mergers don’t increase shareholder value, and, 47% of laterals don’t make it five years with their new firm, which is usually about the length of time needed for a lateral hire to cross over the recruiting and compensation-above-contribution line into positive territory.By contrast, word of mouth is a far better long term strategy because it focuses on amplifying the effect of your word of mouth through your audience that you own and control.Links/References mentioned in this episode:47% of lateral hires don’t make it five years with their new firm: https://www.boomtime.com/there-are-only-two-ways-to-grow-your-law-firm/83% of mergers don’t increase shareholder value: https://www.forbes.com/sites/georgebradt/2015/01/27/83-mergers-fail-leverage-a-100-day-value-acceleration-plan-for-success-instead/#63cbca905b86Have a marketing question you want answered? Bill Bice is a programmer at heart. At 18, he created ProLaw Software, the first integrated ERP for law firms. After selling the company to Thomson Reuters, Bill became a VC as a founding partner in the Verge Fund, investing in high tech, high growth companies in the southwest. Bill has grown and invested in 27 companies and is now on his fourth company in legal. One of the core things he’s learned is that there are really only two ways to grow your law firm: lateral hires, and word of mouth marketing. Frustrated by trying to get great marketing for his companies, he decided to tackle the problem, and founded boomtime, which approaches marketing as a technology problem, and uses data-driven approaches to create marketing strategies to help businesses grow. What the data revealed was that great marketing came from the in-the-trenches, day-in-day-out work. That’s why boomtime built the world’s first marketing-as-a-service platform: fuse. boomtime’s marketing strategists follow the data: instead of reinventing the wheel, boomtime applies proven marketing techniques at scale. Erin Barrio is a Marketing Strategist at boomtime and met Bill while working as the Communications Manager for the Verge Fund, where Bill is a founding partner. Together, Bill and Erin will provide insights on how to grow your firm with the one form of marketing that really works: word of mouth.
